Foreign Affairs › World Leaders Show Support As Biden Quits Race by Fineman2(op): 7:32am On Jul 22, 2024 |
Joe Biden withdrew from the presidential race on Sunday, after weeks of mounting pressure from Democrats
Joe Biden's decision to drop out of the 2024 Presidential race has sent ripples around the world, with a number of global leaders reacting to the news.
He also endorsed Vice-President Kamala Harris and said he would "focus all my energies on my duties as President" for the rest of his term.
Many of his allies paid tribute to his foreign policy achievements and acknowledged the difficulty of his decision.
"Thanks to [Biden], transatlantic cooperation is close, Nato is strong and the USA is a good and reliable partner for us. His decision not to run again deserves recognition," Germany's Chancellor Olaf Scholz posted on X.
The United Kingdom's Prime Minister Keir Starmer said he "respects" Mr Biden's decision and "looks forward" to working together for the rest of his presidency. "I know that, as he has done throughout his remarkable career, President Biden will have made his decision based on what he believes is in the best interests of the American people," Mr Starmer added.
Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau
thanked Mr Biden and US First Lady Jill Biden, calling the president a "true friend" to Canadians. "He’s a great man, and everything he does is guided by his love for his country," Mr Trudeau said. Some noted the difficulty of Mr Biden's decision to step away from power.
Poland's Prime Minister Donald Tusk said Mr Biden had "made difficult decisions" throughout his political career that have "kept the world safer, and democracy and freedom stronger". "I know that you were guided by the same principles when announcing your latest decision. Perhaps the most difficult one in your life," he said.
Mr Biden has faced intense pressure from recent weeks from fellow Democrats to step aside, after a faltering debate performance against Donald Trump in June.
But even up until last week, Mr Biden has said that he planned to stay in the race. At 81, he is the oldest person ever to have occupied the Oval Office.
Japan's Prime Minister Fumio Kishida
noted that Biden's announcement is one the US president considers "the best political decision he can make". "The Japan-US alliance is the cornerstone of our country's diplomacy and security, so we will monitor the situation closely," Mr Kishida said.
Prime Minister of the Czech RepublicPetr Fiala,
described Mr Biden's decision to withdraw as "responsible and personally difficult... but all the more valuable". But Mr Fiala also acknowledged growing political uncertainty in the US.
"I am keeping my fingers crossed for the USA that a good president emerges from the democratic competition of two strong and equal candidates," he said.
Italy's foreign minister and deputy PM Antonio Tajani
said his country "must look with great serenity to the US". "We will work well with whoever the next president is, whether Trump or Harris," he said.
Ukraine's leader Volodymyr Zelensky said he respects Mr Biden's "tough but strong decision" and thanked him for his "unwavering support for Ukraine’s fight for freedom." "We sincerely hope that America's continued strong leadership will prevent Russian evil from succeeding or making its aggression pay off," Mr Zelensky said. Some countries at odds with the US have also reacted to Mr Biden's decision.
Venezuela's President Nicolas Maduro called it "the most sensible and correct decision". "[Mr Biden] realized that at that age and with weakened health he could not assume the reins of his country, let alone a presidential candidacy," Mr Maduro said at a campaign event for his own re-election.
And the Kremlin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russia's priority will still be on its war in Ukraine. "A lot can change" before the US presidential vote in November, he added. "We need to be patient and carefully monitor what happens," he said. https://bbc.com/news/articles/cw9ygvw959ro

Thousands of students armed with sticks and rocks clashed with armed police in Dhaka on Thursday, as the Bangladesh authorities cut some mobile internet services to quell anti-quota protests that have killed at least 12 people this week.
The nationwide protests are the biggest since Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was re-elected to a fourth term in office and are fueled by high unemployment among the youth, with nearly a fifth of the 170 million population out of work or education.
Six people died in clashes with police in Dhaka on Thursday, including a bus driver whose body was brought to a hospital with a bullet wound to his chest, and a student, officials told Reuters. Hundreds more were injured, they said.
Law Minister Anisul Huq said the government was willing to talk to the protesters, who want the state to stop setting aside 30% of government jobs for the families of those who fought in the 1971 war of independence from Pakistan. https://www.voanews.com/a/student-protesters-vow-complete-shutdown-in-bangladesh-as-clashes-continue/7703066.htmlNlfpmod

Foreign Affairs › Countries With The Largest Gross Domestic Product (GDP) 2024 by Fineman2(op): 11:35am On Jul 13, 2024 |
In 2024, the United States has the largest economy in the world, with a gross domestic product of just under 29 trillion U.S. dollars. China had the second largest economy, at around 18.5 trillion U.S. dollars. Recent adjustments in the list have seen Germany's economy overtake Japan's to become the third-largest in the world in 2023, while Brazil's economy moved ahead of Italy's in 2024.
Global gross domestic product amounts to almost 110 trillion U.S. dollars, with the United States making up more than one quarter of this figure alone. The 12 largest economies in the world includes all Group of Seven (G7) economies, as well as the four largest BRICS economies. The U.S. has consistently had the world's largest economy since the interwar period, and while previous reports estimated it would be overtaken by China in the 2020s, more recent projections estimate the U.S. economy will remain the largest by a considerable margin going into the 2030s.
The gross domestic product of a country is calculated by taking spending and trade into account, to show how much the country can produce in a certain amount of time, usually per year. It represents the value of all goods and services produced during that year. Those countries considered to have emerging or developing economies account for almost 60 percent of global gross domestic product, while advanced economies make up over 40 percent. https://www.statista.com/statistics/268173/countries-with-the-largest-gross-domestic-product-gdp/

17 persons have been confirmed dead and over 120 persons trapped at the Saint Academy building located in the Busa Buji community.
PUNCH Online reports that the school building collapsed around 8.30 am on Friday when the students and teachers were in their classes.
The state Commissioner for Information, Musa Ashoms, disclosed in a statement on Friday that 120 persons were trapped under the rubbles while giving an update on the incident.
The statement read, “The Plateau State Government has expressed deep sadness over the tragic incident at Saint Academy Jos, where a building collapsed resulting in casualties and injured students and teachers still being evacuated to different hospitals within Jos
“The government describes the incident as an avoidable tragedy, citing the school’s weak structure and unsafe location near a riverbank.
“However, we commend the efforts of NEMA, SEMA, Red Cross and security agencies in rescuing trapped children and transporting them to hospitals.”
Ashoms disclosed that the government has instructed hospitals to prioritise treatment without documentation or payment.
He added, “The Commissioner of Health has also ordered all major hospitals in Jos to attend to the victims.
“Approximately 120 people were trapped, with many evacuated.
“The government emphasises the importance of adhering to safety standards, making Executive Order 003 sacrosanct. Schools with similar issues are urged to close down, enabling the Jos Metropolitan Development Board to prevent future incidents.”
Ashoms stated that the incident highlights the importance of prioritising safety standards to prevent tragedies.
Meanwhile, the Executive Secretary of the State Emergency Management Agency, Sunday Àbdu, who spoke with PUNCH Online after their rescue operation, confirmed that 17 persons have died as a result of the collapse
The SEMA boss, who described the incident as sad, said, “We have finished the rescue mission at least for today. We are just closing from the site.
“The fact remains that the casualty figures keep changing. In Bingham University Teaching Hospital Jos, there are 13 dead bodies and 43 persons receiving medical attention.
“In OLA Specialist Hospital, we have over 40 receiving attention. In Plateau Specialists Hospital, we have four dead bodies with 40 people receiving treatment.
“We also have some casualties who were evacuated to the Jos University Teaching Hospital but I don’t have the figure at the moment.” https://punchng.com/breaking-several-feared-dead-as-school-building-collapses-in-plateau/Nlfpmod

A Sukhoi Superjet 100 passenger plane crashed Friday outside Moscow, killing all three crew members on board, according to Russian state news agency TASS.
The crash reportedly happened during a test flight, when no passengers were on board.
Authorities are investigating what caused the fatal incident.
The crash comes after a series of issues with Russia’s flagship plane, which was developed by the Russian aerospace company Sukhoi Civil Aircraft and was the first all-new commercial Russian aircraft produced after the end of the Soviet Union.
In May 2012, a Sukhoi Superjet 100 jet was on a demonstration flight in Indonesia when it crashed into Mount Salak, killing all 45 people aboard.
Then, in May 2019, 41 people died after an Aeroflot Superjet burst into flames after an emergency landing just after taking off from Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport. https://www.thedailybeast.com/sukhoi-superjet-100-plane-crashes-outside-moscow-killing-all-on-board

ALMOST a TRILLION dollar spent per year just to develop more efficient ways to DECIMATE their enemies.
With a budget that is MORE than 3X that of the next country and their population, they will remain the BIG DADDY of the world for a long time. USA is truly the premier of modern military, an empire itself, but I don't like some things the country does. |
