It is no longer news that Barack Obama has set another first in the history of America. Indeed America is a land of dreams those who dare to dream. Having become the first black Presidential candidate in the history of the United States, I reckon the sceptics are already having a rethink. Perhaps Obama may indeed go all the way and become the first African American to occupy the White House. But wait a minute, will it still be called White House? With an Obama President in America, the following should be expected: The Ancient city of Ile-Ife which prides itself as the cradle of the Yoruba/Black race will quickly honour Barack with a chieftaincy title, saying his roots can be traced to Ile-Ife with his ancestors family name being "Obamuyiwa" and that the ancestors later migrated to Nyagoma Koyelo village in Kenya but pronounciation changed the family's name to Obama. You may wonder where I got this brain-wave from. Afterall whilst former Governor Odili was still in office in Rivers State, he received a honorary chieftaincy in Ile-Ife and his ancestral roots were traced to the Odilambe family in the ancient city of Ile-Ife who migrated to Rivers State and changed their names to Odili. How amusing. Our Ndigbo brothers - the home-movie producers in Iweka Road, Aba will definitely enjoy a boost in sales of the newly produced film Barack my Love or Obamania and the sorts. These will be blockburster movies hitting the streets after the swearing in of the president. Nigerian names register will start featuring birth-names like Barack Olawale, Obama Bello, etc afterall Nigerians now bear Clinton Peters, Clinton Nnaemeka , etc. Rememeber a Nigerian Senator Ayo Arise from Ekiti had moved a motion to send a congratulatory message just after the June 3 victory of Barack. Who knows if the lawmakers will change the National Assembly complex into Obama Plaza or Barack Obama Chambers, I understand the stickers are out but where are the Almanacs? We should expect A lot of 2009 calendars to be branded Obamania. Street names will be changed. And bridges too. Maybe the notorious traffic-plagued Falomo Bridge will become Barack Bridge. Whilst these sound very amusing, I look forward to an Obama Presidency in the U.S. and then I can refer us back to this piece and see how many of my predictions will actually come to pass. http://www.guardiannewsngr.com/letters/article01//indexn2_html?pdate=190608&ptitle=Obama%20and%20Nigerians |

SAN FRANCISCO - California's Supreme Court declared that gay couples in the nation's most populous state can marry — a monumental but perhaps short-lived victory for the gay rights movement Thursday that was greeted with tears, hugs, kisses and at least one instant proposal of matrimony. [This is the law @ work, trying to do that which is naturally impossible.] http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080516/ap_on_re_us/gay_marriage |

In Steven Spielberg's La Amistad, there was this scene where some nobles were having a dinner and had slaves or servants attending to them, the intriguing fact about this is that la Amistad was set in the slave era it, depicted some servants dressed in the wig and gown, this has got me thinking a lot about lawyers and this our noble attire, if we really delve into the origins of what we are so proud to put on today, we definitely understand the need for us to wake up from our neocolonist slumber, i mean this ceremonial gowns as the movie depicted where once worn by servants or slaves while attending to and serving their masters, I'm not corporate against dressing, but, i mean, this bogus things our lawyers dorn in court definitely needs rethinking our weather doesn't even support it. i could remember i was present at a cross examination in once, where a SAN was cross examining a lady actually with the way the dialogue was going she was already corned but the irony for me on that day was that it was the San that was sweating profusely in the court - just because aside the fact that the court room was fixed the weather was so hot, cooling system was of no help, and the San's regalia didn't help matters. |

As they say "shine ur eyes well well" before coming back home, in essence make sure u have secured a good job before venturing to come back, then consider a lot of issues keeping people away from naija-security, power outage, transport, bla bla bla, but remember some pple make it despite all these, but secure a good job first. |
Thank$s all for the insights - 1stly i dont the supreme court has enough liver to remove Yaradua, Secondly election petitions are as they are made very technical, it will be easy for the justices to pick on flimsy irregularities and then uphold the elections, and with the open bribe given to the chairman of the panel and other overt moves i believe the supreme court will rule in his favour. If they do this it means we will spend the next four years with a go slow no direction, i was ill advised, and vague seven point agenda government. If they DARE remove him-then the senate president takes over - this man also has legitimacy issues, technically till he's appeal is heard he still remains the substantive senate president, if he is removed then the chief justice of the federation would be next in line, even if its only in the interim, if another election is to be conducted then Ewu must be removed. Things are sure bound to happen if he is removed, dont think the judges have the gut to remove him. |
As the supreme court get sets to decide on Yar Adua's legitimacy, I'm beginning to feel that no matter what evidence other parties may have or how independent and radical the judges at the Apex court might claim they are, they would just flaw the petition most probably on technical or procedural grounds. Or what do you think? |

Hello everyone, I'm also a fresh wig, in fact less than 3 months at the bar currently serving in one of Nigeria's newest communications company, the thing here is that I'm not at the legal department and beginning to feel a little bit out of place, well the place is good we are still expanding, the pay is good well alot of corpers rolls eyes when they hear about the pay, but for me after sitting idle for more than a week I'm getting bored with the place, I'm beginning to feel i should start looking for a chamber. I very much understand how some chamber work young wig out and pay so little under the guise of gaining experience. i wouldn't have been so much bothered about a law firm, if not for this crazy and annoying idleness, i got myself accredited with cac [infact I'm in the process of filing CO 7 for a rather stubborn client who insists i should go ahead and file despite my warnings that there would be a query if we dont comply accordingly, The dilemma is should i leave this place,-sometimes i get bored and they insist i cant skip some days even when its so obvious theres nothing to do-the place surely has got prospects as in if u are retained but as at now i just feel it could be better if i get myself into something not so off from the law. The head of Chambers where i did my attachment while in law School as asked me to come and see her I'm beginning to think she has something to offer. pals any advice for me. |

Hi here is the address of the consumer protection council if u still need it, hope you have spoken with Starcoms, i'm interested in whatever response response they give u. i'm a young lawyer, very interested in consumer rights. i'm sure they probably have some small prints on the pack that would claim to exclude them from any liability, go ahead talk to them and lets have their response. Goodluck Plot 1105, Dar-es-Salam Street, off Aminu Kano Crescent, Wuse II, P.M.B 5077, Abuja. Tel: 09-52303423, 2730949. Email: cpcnigeria@yahoo.co.uk OR info@cpcnigeria.com |
Thanks Angelmart, Mypeace, i appreciate your responses, i need a more advice on this, i'm currently serving in a satellite communications company, though they have a legal department, i was sent to the HR department, for most times there i have nothing to do, i'm begining to feel i should look for another place for my NYSC, a place where i will at least get some experience as a lawyer, i'm not really interested in advocacy as i know [pardon my words] it sucks, i've spent more than a month in law firms that advocates-going to court and all that stuff,- i want nothing of advocacy execpt if i have to do it for charity, but i still feel i need experience, i feel i should leave this place for a firm, plus i have so much free time here i could invest it in studying even if it in in the office, but the thought of sitting doing nothing all day [sometimes a get to do a little memo here and there] but most times i just browse myself off. |
