SportsWhere's My Phone? How To Locate Your Lost (or Stolen) Smartphone by flyingdagger(op): 4:06pm On Jun 24, 2019
Have you ever left your phone somewhere and just couldn't find it again? There are quite a few ways you can locate lost or stolen smartphones. If you are able to locate the phone remotely, you can ensure that you make life difficult for any thieves who may want to access your data. Here, we give you some tips on how to protect your data and recover your device.

Losing your smartphone or having it stolen can cause you a lot of anguish and frustration. Not only have you lost an expensive device, but you've also lost a lot of private data, contacts, pictures and files along with it! There are ways you can mitigate the damage of losing your device or having it stolen and perhaps even reunite you with your smartphone.

Tricks of the trade

It's often quite easy for thieves to get access to your smartphone. When you're in a restaurant, it's too often that a phone is just left sitting on a table. Walking down the street or traveling on public transport, many people casually hold it in one hand. Whether it's Internet browsing, Facebook, Twitter or calls - thieves can easily take advantage of these situations. Also, it's important to keep your guard up when you're out having fun. According to a report about smartphone theft in the US by Lookout, 16% of phones get stolen in a restaurant and 11% at bar or nightclub.

One popular trick is people coming up to you with a note: "I am deaf and homeless, could I please have some spare change for a cup of coffee." For a fleeting moment, your smartphone, which you had left on the table next to your beer, is covered by the piece of paper. As you go to reach for your wallet, the thief will swiftly remove your smartphone from the table. As a result, the thief pockets both your spare change and your phone. A similar trick can also be done with a newspaper, as this is also effective in concealing thieves' sticky fingers.

One other trick is the quick grip. The closing subway door is always an excellent opportunity for thieves. They reach for the device, either from the outside through the closing doors or they manage to take it from your hands just as the doors are about to shut. Either way, this method ensures that you won't be able to chase after them.

When you're walking in the street, you can protect yourself by simply holding on to your phone while you are talking, and ensuring that you are as close as possible to a building or a wall.

Preventing smartphone theft

Backup data regularly

As a general rule, you should not keep any pictures or personal data exclusively on your smartphone. Contacts, pictures and much more can be backed up in the cloud. Google and others offer cloud backups and storage for free, and you can set them to sync automatically. Normally, this automatic backup should start when you set up your smartphone, but don't forget to double check in Settings -> Accounts -> Google -> -> Sync and Backup.

Make it difficult for thieves

Lock your screen with a PIN, password or pattern code. On more modern phones, you can also use a fingerprint or facial scan to lock your device. Be careful, as these are not always as secure as a PIN or password. Specify in the settings that the code must be entered when the device is switched on to decrypt the internal memory so that only you can access it. In this case, if the phone is stolen, the thief can't get to your data.

Use a Google account so you can make sure that if your phone is reset by the thief, he or she cannot reactivate the phone without knowing your Google account. This makes the phone totally worthless to the thief. It works to prevent thefts, too. According to a Reuters report, a comparable functionality had already demonstrably reduced the number of reported thefts of iPhones.

Find your smartphone

Record the 15-digit IMEI number of your phone, know the brand and the model and write down the customer service hotline number for your carrier. With this info, it's easier to report your phone as stolen and lock the SIM card.

If the SIM card is removed but the smartphone has not yet been switched off, it can still be found via the IMEI. You can read the IMEI by typing *#06# into the phone/dialer app. Among other things, mobile phone insurance companies can help in these types of situations.

Android device manager finds your smartphone

With Android Device Manager, you can have your smartphone ring at maximum volume so you can quickly find a misplaced cell phone. If it is somewhere else, you can locate it in real time via GPS. However, the stolen or lost smartphone must be switched on and connected to the Internet. If the thief removes the SIM card and disconnects from mobile data, switches off the Wi-Fi or powers down the phone, this is sadly no longer possible.

You can also use the Device Manager to display a message so the person who finds it knows how to contact you. It's also possible to remotely wipe all data on the device.

The great weakness of the Device Manager is that your smartphone must be connected to the Internet for its remote features to work. In addition, you have to log on to a computer with the same Google account as your smartphone. If you use two-step verification, you'll need a method other than your phone to verify your identity and log in to the PC. This can be problematic.

Log into the Android Device Manager's web interface with your Google credentials to locate, secure or remotely wipe your (stolen) devices. To see if this is installed and activated on your phone, open your Android device's settings and go to Security -> Device administrators. You should see Android Device Manager listed there. Activate it so you have control over your phone remotely in case something bad should happen to it.

Manufacturers and third-party apps offer similar services. Samsung has Find my Mobile, Motorola has Motorola Device Manager and Sony has myXperia for its devices. This is a good secondary option if you do not have a Google account or can't access it for some reason.

The Play Store includes many third-party apps like Avast, Lost Android or Where's My Droid. Some of them, like Cerberus, also communicate via text message with your smartphone. So you can also send commands to your smartphone without an Internet connection as long as the device is switched on and the SIM card is inserted. In addition, apps block thieves from turning off the unlocked smartphone, which can help you or the police in locating it.

PhonesHow To Fix Phone Touch Screen Not Working by flyingdagger(op): 9:37am On Jun 03, 2019
Phone touch screen could stop working for many reasons. Here are the most common reasons and how to fix it

Physical damage. The touch screen is broken or damaged. High temperature, cold, moisture, magnet, static electricity can all damaged touchscreen on Android phone;

Malicious or performance-draining apps that crash the phone so the touch screen is unresponsive;

Android system crashes after a firmware update, ROM flashing, etc.

Wrong settings. A factory reset could restore the phone to default settings and fix the problem.

If the touch screen just stops working for no reason, it is probably caused by a software problem. You can refer to the Part 2 for solutions.

Touch Screen Not Working: How to Fix?

If your touch screen doesn't experience any physical damage but suddenly stops respond to your touch, this may be caused by software issues.

1. Restart Android Device

Before rushing into any other troubleshooting procedure, restart your Android phone or tablet to fix software glitches that may prevent the screen from functioning. To restart android device with the touch screen is not working properly:

Press and hold the power button until the screen becomes black;

After 1 minute or so, hold the power button again to power on the device.
In many cases, the touch screen will respond normally after the device reboots.

2. Remove Memory Card & SIM Card

Sometimes, faulty memory card or SIM card should take the blame. Therefore,

Power off your device (keep holding power button if the screen is totally unresponsive);

Remove back cover of your Android device and take off memory & SIM card;
Reboot the device and see if the problem is gone.
3. Put Device in Safe Mode

Corrupted or troublesome third-party apps could also cause touch screen problem on Android phone or tablet. Under the safe mode, all third-party apps that you download will be disabled. So if the touch screen works well in safe mode, then you should uninstall some of the third-party apps, especially those that were installed recently before the touch screen problem starts.

Power off your Android device;

Long press power button to reboot the device;
When you see the Samsung, Nexus, LG or other brand logos, release power button and hold down Volume Down button;
Release Volume Down button when the device boots up with a Safe mode indicator on the bottom left corner.

If your touch screen just lags or respond incorrectly, you can also try to enter safe mode in this method:

Hold power button until the power options menu appears;

Long-press the Power Off ;
When you see the message whether to reboot your device into safe mode, tap "OK".

4. Factory Reset Android Device in Recovery Mode

If the touch screen is completely unresponsive, factory resetting the device in Recovery Mode may help. However, this will delete all data in your Android device, including downloaded apps, photos, messages, contacts, etc. Therefore, use this as the last resort and if possible, have a backup to your Google account beforehand.

5. Calibrate Touch Screen on Android with Apps

There are apps in Google Play Store that can calibrate your phone/tablet touch screen and improve its accuracy and responsiveness. These apps are especially helpful if your touch screen responds too slow or inaccurately. Type "touch screen calibration" on the search bar in Play Store and you should get quite a few results. Read the reviews carefully before download.

PhonesDoes Using A Power Bank Damage Your Phone Battery by flyingdagger(op): 10:20am On May 30, 2019
You may have heard some phone users complain that one power bank or the other damaged their phone and then concluded that power banks damage phone battery. Does using a power bank damage your phone battery?

I have been asked a direct question on this subject:

Hello sir, pls what’s you take on this? There is this believe in some quarters that power bank usage deteriorate battery life/performances faster than the conventional charging. How true is this? Is it scientifically proven?

The direct answer to the above question is this: there is no scientific backing to the idea that the use of a portable charger leads to faster deterioration in battery life of your smartphone or any kind of device for that matter.

Power banks are designed to discharge power to your phone or other device at specific volatages and power ratings. These follow standard ratings that your devices already use. Using a power bank will not damage your phone battery in any way.

However, as with every other electrical/electronic equipment, a substandard device is capable of causing damage. Substandard cables in homes result in fires. Substandard tyres will expose you to increased danger of vehicle accidents. Substandard cement blocks and concrete mixes will result in collapsed buildings and structures.

In the same way, a poor quality power bank can damage your phone battery and cause it to degrade faster than usual. A portable charger of questionable quality can potentially deliver a lower or higher voltage than your phone is designed to handle, and this can damage not only your phone’s battery but possibly other electrical circuits in it.

A power bank that is properly designed and built to high quality standards poses no harm to your smartphone, music player, or tablet.

Also, note that you need to use a power bank with a power rating that matches your phone’s. Using a power bank that discharges a higher voltage than what your phone is built to handle is a dangerous thing and can damage your phone battery.

Good quality power banks often have advanced systems built in to protect your smartphone or other device from overcharging, overheating, over-current and over-voltage. These more intelligent portable chargers are designed to recognise and protect your phone.

Does using a power bank damage your phone battery?
In conclusion, what will damage your phone battery are substandard power banks. So what should you do? Avoid buying ridiculously cheap, nameless and faceless portable chargers, especially if you own a good quality smartphone. Those items are usually of substandard quality and are more likely to damage your phone battery.

It is simple logic: if your smartphone is worth anything to you, you should be using good quality accessories with it, especially when it comes to power and battery charging accessories.

Lastly, when buying a power bank for use with your devices, be sure to check the power ratings to confirm that it discharges voltage and power that is specified for your phone. This is important.

If you see someone complain that a power bank damaged his phone, chances are that they charged said phone with an inferior quality power bank. Using a power bank in itself does not damage your phone battery in any way.

What other things may damage your phone battery?
As a bonus point, here are a few more things that can damage your phone battery. Using or charging your phone in extreme temperatures is bad for the battery. More adavanced phones will cut off the charging process if the environment gets too hot or cold.

Also, note that if you have used a phone for over two years, chances are that you have exceeded the full charge cycles, after which the battery begins to deteriorate. At that point, you either replace the battery or buy a new phone
