tomcat: well if we get someone who is using 3g glo to post their results from speedtest.net or pingtest.net, we will know for sure if they have switched the traffic to glo-1 or is still satelite.

jdoss: @flyuche
I am in Lagos, the guy I spoke to there said they bought capacity on main one but refused to tell me how much. The modem is the Huawei Echolife BM635. Like I said, they are testing the network so there are probably very few people using it. Having said that, it is still very fast . I have no idea what to download now. interesting. this is the same mobile wimax technology Sprint's Clearwire is deploying in the U.S.( dubbed 4G ) i wish Swift deploys this nationwide and introduces small USB modems and wimax enabled smartphones. |

@jdoss. is swift on main? are you in lagos? what's the modem like? i am impressed. even in South Africa, we can not boost of this kind of speed. |

texazzpete: Wrong. There are low and mid tier Android phones that are cheap, such as the HTC Tattoo. If you're looking toward top tier android phones like the Droid X, Droid 2, Samsung Fascinate and HTC Evo 4G, you're talking of phones with 3.7 - 4.3 inch screens running with 1GHz snapdragon chips. How do you expect such phones to be cheap?
Cut your coat according to your size. Besides, none of those phones cost more than any flagship Nokia phone. take it or leave, i maintain that android phones are damn expensive. htc tatoo na beta phone check out prcies of phones at clove.co.uk , that where i get my phones. |

I understand MTN has been using SAT-3 from Benin Republic thru Suburban. @Djcn, so you noticed the improvement too on glo 3G Plus. sincerley @tomcat, i don't really care if they are using glo1 fibre or not, at the service level nobody should complain. haba with dowload speeds that peaks at 300kB/s, what more do you really want. right now, i'm getting VALUE for my bucks! |
Computers › Re: Globacom Submarine Cable - Glo-1 by flyuche(m): 11:36pm On Sep 06, 2010 |
MTN, glo have been using their fibre network to carry voice traffic like forever. |
Computers › Re: Globacom Submarine Cable - Glo-1 by flyuche(m): 8:51pm On Sep 06, 2010 |
wait a minute guys. what about main one that has launched with etisalat, starcomms and MTN on board? nothing seems to be happening on these networks in terms of speed not to talk of tariff reduction. in fact starcomms has gotten so bad i had to throw the modem away. |

goggs: @flyuche Not from where i am browsing. Its still less than 20KBps on their 3g network. Which press release are u talking about? Any link? Thanks tomcat: for a proper speed test you need to use a download manager and go to a website with huge capacity like nvidia.com and download a driver, whatever your steady speed is it will be your download, with a download manager the speed becomes something else. here i was downloading virtualbox 3.2.8

glo used a vsat provider based in cyprus to carry it's 3G internet traffic. not anymore. according to press release, glo 1 commercial launch is eminent. does it not make sense that by now the submarine cable is being tested? glo 3G plus download speed has improved tremendously from a mere 2-5kB/s to beyond 100kB/s. |
Computers › Re: Globacom Submarine Cable - Glo-1 by flyuche(m): 6:07pm On Aug 29, 2010 |
tomcat: this thread is about Glo-1 submarine cable, and not glo 3g or any other ones,
however please note 2 things:
1. the 3g is not connected to the glo-1 as your ping clearly shows
2. In wireless connections like 3g or wimax, speedtest.net rarely shows the real speed of your connection.
as far as i know glo-1 will be connected around September as they all expect, and that means that it will be the main backbone for the 3g, broadaccess, voice etc, pls let us know where the 3G is connected if you know better. speedtest.net is used and recognised worldwide. when pcmag or pcworld magazines conducted the average download speeds of wireless networks in the USA, they used speedtest.net. |
