5 Biggest Causes of Pot-Belly and How To Reduce It There are pills and exercises in the market today that claim to erase belly fat effortlessly. However, changes in a person’s lifestyle are a more direct and more effective approach to eliminating the problem. Excessive belly fat increases the risk of diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, sleep apnea and even Alzheimer’s disease. Here are 5 of the most common causes of belly fat. 1. Drinking Too Much Alcohol “Beer belly” is the common term for excess fat that has accumulated due to drinking a lot of alcohol on a regular basis. Beer isn’t the only culprit, though. Contrary to the specific term, drinking an excessive amount of any alcoholic beverage can cause beer belly. (Except wine, according to research.) Alcohol contains nothing but empty calories that are stored in the stomach area. 2. Eating Too Many Bad Carbohydrates There are good carbs and there are bad carbs. Eating unrefined carbs like fruit, legumes, vegetables and whole grains is good for you, and helps in weight control. Eating biscuits, cakes, donuts, white bread and other refined carbs does the opposite. Eat too many of these carbs and a person’s insulin level will rise. Their metabolism will slow down, and the excess sugar the body can’t use will be stored as belly fat. 3. Stress Overload Too much stress has many negative impacts on the body. Stress causes the body to switch into survival mode. One way the body ensures its survival is by storing more fat so starvation doesn’t occur if there’s no food eaten. Stress also causes the body to produce excessive amounts of Cortisol. This hormone moves stored fat to the abdomen area and creates belly fat. According to a study by the Psychology Department at Yale University, women (in particular) who had a higher amount of belly fat were more negative, and lived with higher levels of stress. 4. Genetics This cause of belly fat may be the toughest one to hear, because it entails not really being able to do all that much to prevent it. Genetics play a role in deciding where the fat distribution goes in your body, and it practically relates to two different body types. Either you are apple- shaped or pear-shaped. If you are pear-shaped, then the fat generally accumulates in your lower areas like your fanny. If you are apple-shaped, then your body has the tendency of storing fat around your midsection, thus leading to belly fat. 5. Sedentary Lifestyle A sedentary lifestyle is defined as one in which a person fails to exercise regularly, or fails to get any exercise at all. The biggest problem with a sedentary lifestyle is that it can increase your chances of developing serious health conditions, which are all somewhat preventable. If you lead a sedentary lifestyle, you are raising your chances of dying younger, yet you can easily avoid this by simply moving more and exercising regularly. These 15 Symptoms are signs of Cancer Women's bodies are always changing. Sometimes changes that seem normal can be signs of cancer, though. The key is to pay attention to your body so you can notice when something's different. "New symptoms indicate something has changed in your body, and you want to know what that means." So, what should you watch for? 1. Breast changes Most breast lumps aren't cancer, but your doctor should always check them. Let her know about these changes, too: Skin dimpling or puckering Nipples that turn inward Nipple discharge Redness or scaling of your nipple or breast skin To look for the cause of your symptoms, your doctor will do a physical exam and ask you questions about your medical history. You may also have tests like a mammogram or a biopsy, when doctors remove a tiny piece of tissue for testing. 2. Bloating "Women are natural bloaters," says Marleen Meyers, MD, an oncologist at NYU Langone Medical Center. "It's OK to wait a week or two to see if it goes away." If your symptoms don't get better with time, or if they happen with weight loss or bleeding, see a doctor. Constant bloating can sometimes mean ovarian cancer. You'll have a pelvic exam as well as blood tests, and sometimes an ultrasound, to look for the cause of the problem, Andersen says. 3. Between-Period Bleeding If you’re still getting periods, tell your doctor if you’re spotting between them. Bleeding that’s not a part of your usual monthly cycle can have many causes, but your doctor will want to rule out endometrial cancer(cancer of the lining of your uterus). Bleeding after menopause is never normal and should be checked right away. 4: Skin Changes A change in the size, shape, or color of a mole or other spot is a common sign of skin cancer. See your doctor for a thorough exam and perhaps a biopsy. This is one time you don't want to wait, Meyers says. 5. Blood in Your Pee or Stool Talk to your doctor if you're bleeding from a part of your body that normally doesn't, especially if the bleeding lasts more than a day or two, Meyers says. Bloody stool is often from hemorrhoids, but it can also be a symptom of colon cancer. Bloody urine is usually the first sign of cancer of the bladder or kidneys, says Herbert Lepor, MD, a urologist at NYU's Langone. 6. Changes in Lymph Nodes Lymph nodes are small, bean-shaped glands around the body. Most changes in them come from common infections. But some cancers, including leukemia and lymphoma, can also cause lymph nodes to swell. It's a good idea to see your doctor if you have a lump or swelling anywhere in your body that lasts a month or more, Meyers says. 7. Trouble Swallowing Occasional trouble swallowing is nothing to worry about. But when it happens often, especially with vomiting or weight loss, your doctor may want to check you for throat or stomach cancer. He'll look into your symptoms with a throat exam and a barium X-ray. During a barium test, you drink a special liquid that makes your throat stand out on the X-ray. 8. Weight Loss Without Trying Most women wish extra pounds would magically melt away. But losing 10 pounds or more without a change in your diet or exercise habits could signal a problem. Most unintended weight loss is not cancer, Meyers says. "It's often caused by stress or your thyroid, but it can be a sign of pancreatic cancer," she says. Stomach and lung cancers are also possible. Your doctor may ask for a lot of tests to look for a problem, including blood tests and imaging tests, like a CT scan. 9. Heartburn Too much food, alcohol, or stress (or all three) can cause serious heart burn. Meyers suggests that you change your diet for a week or two to see if your symptoms get better. If that doesn't help, talk to your doctor. Heartburn that doesn't go away or gets worse could mean cancer of the stomach, throat, or ovaries. 10. Mouth Changes If you smoke, watch for white or bright-red patches inside your mouth or on your lips. Both can signal oral cancer. Ask your doctor or dentist about tests and treatment. Although our organs are what keep us running, we often take them for granted. So we eat unhealthy foods, don’t exercise, drink lots of alcohol, and fail to get a good night’s sleep. Because our organs are inside of us, we can’t exactly observe the abuse our organs are taking. However, there are ways to notice when your organs aren’t working as well as they should be. Getting to Know Your Liver One of the most prominent organs in the body is the liver. It plays a number of vital roles such as: Manufacturing blood proteins that aid in clotting, oxygen transport, and immune system function Storing excess nutrients and returning some of the nutrients to the bloodstream Manufacturing bile, a substance needed to help digest food Helping the body store sugar (glucose) in the form of glycogen Ridding the body of harmful substances in the bloodstream, including drugs and alcohol Breaking down saturated fat and producing cholesterol As you can imagine, when the liver is not functioning properly the whole body suffers. One of the most common ways that the liver takes abuse is through excessive alcohol consumption. Many people often joke about, “Drinking so hard their liver hurts.” But this is no joking matter. Cirrhosis of the liver is a common ailment that affects hundreds of thousands of people yearly if not more. Cirrhosis of the liver is a, “late stage of scarring (fibrosis) of the liver caused by many forms of liver diseases and conditions, such as hepatitis and chronic alcohol abuse. The liver carries out several necessary functions, including detoxifying harmful substances in your body, cleaning your blood and making vital nutrients.” In addition to cirrhosis, there are many other liver ailments such as ‘Fatty Liver Disease’ and Hepatitis. These are serious medical issues and should not be treated lightly. The best approach to treating these issues is to prevent them from getting out of hand. This means that you should be firmly aware of signs that your liver is in bad condition. Here are a few common ways that your liver is in bad shape: On the Outside of the Body Two of the most prominent indicators of human health on the exterior of the body are the skin and the eyes. 1. The Skin Our skin is a physical manifestation of our insides. Because it is our first line of defense in keeping the body healthy, the skin reflects the body’s ability to fight off disease. The more bright and healthy it looks, the more capable it is of keeping the body disease-free. When the liver is faring poorly, the skin begins to suffer quite clearly. For example, you may be familiar with ‘Jaundice’. This is a yellowing of the skin that is often associated with liver disease. Other examples of liver damage manifesting itself on the skin is through rashes, itching, acne, and prominent blood vessels. 2. The Eyes Just as jaundice can occur on the skin, it often occurs in the eyes. The eyes should be a healthy, crystal clear white with bright colors around the pupils; this is a sign that all is well. But when the eyes are constantly blood-shot, itchy, red, and puffy it may be a sign that your liver is in bad condition. Other External Signs to Look For The eyes and skin are good indicators of health because we all know what skin and eyes should ideally look like. However, in other aspects …. Excessive Fat Build-Up There are numerous reasons for weight gain: Poor diet, lack of exercise, unhealthy lifestyles etc. Yet, one of the underlying causes of fat gain is often an underperforming metabolism. And one of the main reasons for a failing metabolism is an unhealthy liver. Your liver is supposed to regulate fat storage and blood sugar levels. Although when the liver is occupied with toxins and other substances, it can’t deal with blood sugar properly. In many cases these leads to what is known as fatty liver, which is when the liver begins to store fat on the liver. 3. Discoloration of Stool If you notice that, “your stools are pale or clay-colored, you may have a problem with the drainage of your biliary system, which is comprised of your gallbladder, liver, and pancreas… Bile salts are released into your stools by your liver, giving the stools a brown color. If your liver is not producing enough bile, or if the flow of the bile is blocked and not draining from your liver, your stools will be pale or clay-colored.” Internal Symptoms It is often easier to notice something is wrong when it manifests itself internally because it throws us off guard when we see something that isn’t right.
