Many suspected members of the Eastern Security Network (ESN), the militia wing of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) group, were on Friday killed during raids of their camps in Imo State by police operatives.

The raid, which took place at Atta, Izombe and Ideato North areas of the state, was said to have commenced around 4am on Friday.

The Nation gathered operatives of the Intelligence Response Squad (IRT), Special Tactical Squad (STS), Anti-Kidnapping Unit (AKU) and other special forces carried out the operation and completely overran three camps allegedly belonging to IPOB/ESN.


Sources told The Nation that a commander of the group, who was earlier arrested, led operatives to the camps where several weapons, stolen vehicles, explosives, gun powders, charms, weed, ammunition, hard drugs and the group’s flags were recovered.

Although the number of suspects killed were not specified, a source privy to the operation said many were neutralised inside the forest during gun battles.

He said six of the suspects were apprehended and were currently aiding police investigation.

COMMEMORATING INTERNATIONAL DAY AGAINST DRUG TRAFFICKING, OSINBAJO ATTENDS PREMIERE OF NOLLYWOOD MOVIE, “THE SILENT BARON”

Lending his support to the global campaign against drug abuse and illicit drug trafficking, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, Friday evening attended the premiere of a movie titled “The Silent Baron”, a film produced by Mr Ifeanyi Ukaeru, in partnership with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency to highlight the dangers of the abuse and trafficking in Nigeria.

Prof. Osinbajo was accompanied by the Executive Chairman of the NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (rtd); the Director General of the National Council for Arts and Culture (NCAC), Otunba Olusegun Runsewe, and other top government officials.

The movie premiere is part of activities marking the 2021 United Nations International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Drug Trafficking which falls on the 26th of June, every year. It is produced by Ekwe Nche Entertainment Ltd, the NDLEA, among other partners.

The movie features some internal challenges of agencies fighting drug barons and highlights how the couriers are recruited including by fooling ladies and their parents with false promises of taking the ladies abroad.

Starring some top Nollywood actors, the movie features the duplicitous life of a young man named Anselm, disguised as a foreign based professional who only visits Nigeria on short vacations. He lures young ladies with gifts, alluring words and under false pretences as couriers for his illicit drug trafficking business. In the end he was caught.

The movie brings to limelight, the commendable role of the NDLEA in the fight against drug trafficking especially at a time when the agency is aggressively exposing the menace with a significant number of arrests in the last couple months.

After watching the movie, a very delighted Vice President met some of the actors who were also present at the premiere, interacted briefly and took group photographs with the actors, movie producers and the production crew before departing from the event.

Please there is something bothering me right now.. I was at my POS shop yesterday afternoon when two guys, they actually do come to withdraw little sums of amount from time to time, requested for my number that they will be needing some money in the morning (today). So I should give them my number so they can call me. So I gave them my number.Now fast forward to this early morning 5:10am, a call entered my phone, I picked and it was those guys, asking me where am I that they want to withdraw. I was like it's too early na, they said even tho, I should just come and help them withdraw the money. Then I asked them how much, he said 200k. I was like I don't have that amount. (cos my business is still new and I don't do big transactions for now). He kept telling me I should just come and withdraw it, that they don't need it now, they can come anytime later to collect it. I just said ok and ended the call.. After 5mins they called again saying they are still waiting for me. I sensed something was not right. I sat down on my bed and started thinking. What if they just went for operation and stole the card? what if they wanted harming me? If the card was stolen, I might end up being in danger cos the bank might trace the transaction to my account. I just put my phone on flight mood and it's still there till now. I went to my mom's room to tell her what happened.
