WhyAmISoQuiet: It depends on the kind of app you want to build. There are a lot of php shared hosting providers. Shared hosting is not suitable for every app even if the app is in written php. Okay, what kind of App is shared hosting not good for? |

I have thought about the IP method but one problem, I think is that visitors IP do change occasionally. Or am I wrong here? Yes, but that is the only way you can get the time spent for unregistered users, but for registered user, simply use that user credentials. |
Programming › Re: Why Are Most Nigerian Programmers Interested In Web Development? by FrankLampard: 10:06am On Sep 14, 2016 |
zzzzy: I might be wrong though, but based on the people I know, most of them are interested in web development. Not that it's actually a bad idea, but i would like to know why. I hardly see developers who are interested in fields like machine learning/ai, computer security, computer vision, speech processing and stuff like that. I believe these are interesting fields, but why do most Nigerians go into the web. Ps: if you're a web developer, you could start by telling us why you love it. Because na wetin dey put food for table. |
Programming › Re: How To Calculate Total Time A User Spent On My Site by FrankLampard: 7:12am On Sep 14, 2016 |
The simple Algorithm for this is thus:
Stored the IP address of the user as the user visits your sites.
Create two column in your db table "created_at" and "updated_at" or anything you choose to name it,
When a user visits, store the IP and the created_at column as well as the updated_at column, as the user is leaving make sure you update the updated_at column.
You can use JS for this or during Logout process.
You can get the difference in another column by using MySQL TRIGGER if you are using MySQL or just calculate the difference yourself.
Thank you. |

DonSegmond: It's diffcult if you don't use javascript. In that case, you will have to store everytime a page is fetched, then crunch that in the backend. That is what analytics are used for. You can just install piwik or google analytics and they do those for you. If you really wanted, you could have a javascript that does an ajax call to a counter on the backend say every 10 second. Then tally up in the backend. If you don't wish to use code, javascript, you could just parse your web server logs, see what time they visited and when they last visited. You can put a timespace so say a user doesn't fetch a link for 1 hr then any link visit after that is regarded as a new visit. Best of luck. The only sensible thing I can read from here is when you mentioned Google Analytics. |

Donald3d: No offense you haven't actually stated what exactly you want or what Nairaland is lacking , "stale without any modifications" , I believe this forum is unique enough , remember its a general forum , if it was niche specific its a different issue . Overtime most sites, make some changes to their interface. Look at Jobberman, Hotels.ng, etc. I am not saying it is a must, but I'm just giving suggestion oh. Even Quora uses that Reddit Script with heavy modifications. When sites stay for long without any modifications, I think it will become boring for some. If I offend anyone, I'm sorry oh. Just my opinion. |
Programming › Seun, Come And See This. by FrankLampard(op): 8:03am On Sep 11, 2016 |
Seun, why can't you install an open source code like reddit.com on this platform? I know you a Python Django person. My suggestion is, since this site nairaland.com has been stale without any modifications in years, why not try and install some open source script like Reddit.com Reddit I think was made with Django and Node.js So many companies are using it and they are doing well. Sites like https://www.codeschool.com/discuss/ , even https://radar.techcabal.com are using it. This sites is becoming very boring to visit. *My Opinion. |

Why not make partially open source and make some of us newbies participate in the development phases. My PHP is good, my Angular is Pretty Basic for now(CRUD operations). Laravel and Phalcon are my frameworks. |

DanielTheGeek: @FrankLampard, I agree with you too... Just that StackOverflow and HackerRank can't even provide a sensible stat because some Nigerian developers don't even use/know these sites so the stat can't be accurate. Can you share a sample of your presentation? joelezeu@gmail.com I was discussing with a friend concerning this and he said StackOverFlow should be enough to produce this kind of data. Because at one certain time, we have all viewed or asked a question in StackOverFlow. Or if Seun can give the data of people viewing www.nairaland.com/programming section of NL, I think that should be enough. I have a solution, but It's a looonnng one and I may do it in the future, We can set up a local website that tests developers and pay those that score 85% and above a fee (Maybe 5k lol). A lot of developers will run to take the test because they have nothing to lose (aside some few minutes of their time) and from the total number of people that take the test a better stat can be derived. Tests can be conducted every month or year and more stat can be derived like number of developers based on language and style. Local ads can help spread the word and attract devs. I have discussed this with DHTML on Facebook before, if he can remember, it will drive Nigerian developers to the site. |

You can't just come up with stats just like that, you can send an email to sites like StackOverFlow or Hackerrank to give you their own stats, with that you can make your own estimate.
Thank you |

larisoft: Do you have a portfolio of at least 5 serious apps u ve worked on? (I don't mean index page Web templates)
You should add it here. Some big boys are watching. Then connect with some gurus in Lagos like dhtml.
Finally, try finding and hacking a site, then send the results of ur exploits to the sites owners. That works all the time.
If all fails, consider joining a tech firm near you for free. If ur good, opportunities will assail u before 2 months elapse.
Good luck bro. This field is heavily sought after. You ll get something soon. Nice one Larry, where do you work? |

marvelck: Imagine after turning you down, she's still unmarried and waiting for 'Mr.Right' while you are now happily married to much finer and better girl. Girls really need to stop creating unnecessary standards or barriers for themselves and do the right thing. And to guys, whenever a girl reject you, its not the end of the world. She's only making it possible for you to meet and be with a better person. Every disappointment is a blessing! Slowpoke, a disgrace to manhood. |

Programming › Re: Please I Get This Error When Submit Form (notice: Undefined Index) by FrankLampard: 10:27pm On Sep 02, 2016 |
If I understand you correctly, you are trying to assign a variable without initializing the variable to something, before using it. One way to remove this error. Is to first initialize the variable to something, then set it to you $_POST variable. $memberId = "";
$memberId = $_POST['memberId'];
OR just assigning your variable using the isset() method $memberId = isset($_POST['memberId']);
Your error should go away. Read this, it may help. http://stackoverflow.com/questions/4261133/php-notice-undefined-variable-and-notice-undefined-indexI didn't go through the link sha, but the title explains the error. Thank you. |
