Jman06: The doctors contribute to the problem of poor healthcare in their own way. Healthcare is a team work but most Nigerian doctors don't see it as such. Doctors are meant to work with other healthcare professionals like Pharmacists, laboratory scientists, radiographers etc to deliver quality healthcare but what they do especially in their private hospitals is to employ quacks who know nothing about healthcare to man these other strategic departments. They do that in order to maximize profits at the expense of quality healthcare delivery.
Like I said before, once the purpose of healthcare is focused largely on money and profits, quality is bound to be compromised. Most people now even prefer to go to pharmacies because Pharmacists don't charge extra money for their consultations aside the cost of drugs, and you and I know that Pharmacists are well trained enough to administer the right medications to patients and some even perform better than some doctors. What is the need of going to the doctor and paying all the consultation fees when the doctor will eventually not render quality care?
Let Nigerian doctors learn to stop downplaying the importance of other healthcare professionals but work in harmony with them to deliver quality care! They don't know it all! Over the years, leadership of our healthcare institutions has been in the hands of medical doctors but nothing to show for it! Life expectancy has continued to fall year in year out..
So can you now see that many Nigerian doctors are contributing to the problem? To solve the problem, let Nigerian doctors emulate how healthcare services are delivered in the western world, shore up standards of practice and stop seeing other healthcare professionals as competitors but rather as teammates!
As for cost of care, let every Nigerian get enrolled into health insurance as being championed by NHIS. If this is done and the healthcare professionals work harmoniously, we should be able to achieve universal health coverage.

Jman06: Accurate diagnosis of diseases is the backbone of effective drug therapy. However, in Nigeria, the culture of blind treatment is the order of the day whereby doctors prescribe medications without thorough diagnosis of the condition first.
There is increasing cases of 'strange' diseases in the country, especially in the southeast where I currently reside. Such diseases are often tagged "strange" when doctors cannot properly diagnose them hence administer wrong treatments until the disease worsens and the patient dies eventually.
Many have died of heart diseases which doctors were busy treating as "ulcer" and administering all manner of medications and making a lot of money off the patients and their relatives. Some have died of kidney related problems while being treated of something else until their conditions got worse.
When cases like the above happen, people easily attribute them to 'spiritual' causes not knowing that the right treatment had not been prescribed due to wrong diagnosis.
We seriously need to step up the standards of our healthcare in this country. There's urgent need to restrict access to drugs until accurate diagnosis has been made and the exact cause of illness determined before drugs prescription can be made.
To do these, we need to implement the national drug distribution guidelines, close down open drug markets and ensure synergy between hospitals, medical laboratory and Pharmacies such that the doctors make diagnosis only after assessment of laboratory results and then write prescriptions for Pharmacists before drugs can be employed.
The current chaotic situation whereby anybody can just go over the counter and buy just any drug and wrongly treat different things from what the individual is suffering from is not helping our healthcare system at all..No wonder life expectancy keeps nosediving in Nigeria. What else do you think is the cause of the several under 50 obituaries we regularly see in our neighborhoods? People are simply dieing avoidable deaths due to improper diagnosis and wrong medications application.
Also, the quest for fast wealth is contributing to the deteriorating healthcare system in the country. Many doctors are just concerned about making quick and huge bucks off patients without administering the right treatments. To ensure sound public health, we need to treat healthcare not as any other business ventures where the focus is solely on profits. This same mentality is why there seem to be reluctance on the part of government to implement various laws aimed at controlling drug distribution and closing down open drug markets that make it easy for just anybody to have access to prescription drugs. We shouldn't continue to endanger public health on the excuse of some individuals making a living at the expense of other people's health and lives! We produce large number of doctors and healthcare professionals but this doesn't translate to improved healthcare delivery and longer life expectancy for our people. This is simply because we fail to maintain standards of practice either ignorantly or deliberately by those whose sole aim is just to make money without minding how public health is being affected!
We borrowed orthodox medical practice from the west, yet we don't want to improve on our practices by being thorough just like it is done in developed western nations. There's a reason why life expectancy is 80 plus in the developed societies while we are having abysmally low life expectancy here in Nigeria ( 52years for women and 48years for men). Even our prominent personalities like politicians, celebrities and business moguls hardly live to old age these days! We seriously need to improve on the quality and quantity of our healthcare as a nation!
To an average Nigerian, the doctor is responsible for all the poor health indices in Nigeria. You should first start by asking about the proportion of the sick Nigerian patients who get to the hospital. Majority of them patronize prayer houses, herbal homes/remedies and patent medicine dealers/pharmacy shops. Of the smaller proportion that eventually gets to the hospitals, how many can afford the cost of complete, standard investigations? Nigerians pay out of their pockets and that's a big impediment to standard healthcare provision. Healthcare is quite expensive and there's no country that can offer a standard care to her populace if they are to make out-of-pocket payment for the services. In most cases, people will want to know if the huge amounts they're paying for investigations will also cover for their treatments, and once the response is in the negative, they zoom off. You won't blame them because earnings are so poor in the country and aren't even enough for feeding, let alone for investigations they deem non-therapeutic.
This is not to mention the cultural and religious beliefs amongst Nigerians that interfere with care provisions. I have seen a Prof who had a leg ulcer and was sent for Duplex ultrasound, but he preferred instead to go to a herbalist, believing his problem was from a juju he stepped on. Such incidents are rife in Nigeria.
See, the causes of the healthcare problems in Nigeria is complex, and can't be simplified by just focusing on or blaming the doctors, who in most cases, don't even have the tools to work with.

In planning our journey into agriculture, we faced a major obstacle, which is the lack of willing workers among the Nigerian youth.
Even in rural areas, finding young people ready to work on farms is rare. Despite high youth unemployment, there’s an equally high unwillingness to engage in serious, productive labor.
Many young people prefer activities such as rent-seeking, begging, or other unproductive means of making a living.
Due to this shortage of willing local labor, many farmers are turning to workers from neighboring countries like Togo and Benin Republic.
These foreign workers are deducted, reliable and typically engaged year-round and earn between N700,000 and N1 million annually.
In addition to this income, they receive food, shelter, and other daily essentials provided by the farm owner.
Their entire payment is saved and given to them in bulk at the end of the year.
To put this into perspective, with Nigeria’s minimum wage set at N30,000 per month last year, these workers’ annual income equates to approximately N65,000 per month.
Moreover, they incur no costs for food, transportation, or housing, as these are covered by the farm.
Over five years period, they can save around N4 million, enabling them to start a business or support their families upon returning home.
This situation is a call to action for young Nigerians to reevaluate their priorities.
With a shift in mindset, we can begin to harness the true potential of our youthful population. We need to embrace hard work and look toward productive ventures like agriculture that offer not only income but also long-term stability.

Acidosis: On the day my late wife was to be buried, just about a week after she passed, I went to the morgue with siblings, friends, and relatives. The mortician asked for someone to come and identify her body, which was already dressed for the lying-in-state, before she would be handed over to us. I jumped forward to do it without thinking because I had missed her. Everyone tried to stop me, but I insisted. When I went in, I saw her lying there as if asleep, dressed in a gown I had brought the day before. But she didn't fully look like the same woman I used to know. Reason is because she never slept on her back in that 'position.' The woman I knew would never sleep like because she loved "gum body" so much.
I can’t fully explain how I felt seeing her like that tbh. I didn’t feel the need to cry, crying was the least thing in my mind, maybe because I had already cried my heart out especially on the night she passed or because I had concluded in my heart that “nothing dey this life.” I went numb and maybe d u m b. No tears, no thoughts, nothing. I was just looking at her, but I was too shocked to fully process her condition.
Days, weeks, and even months have passed. There are still moments when I feel deeply sad and withdrawn, only to come out acting like I’m fine, but one thing that has remained consistent is how I feel about life now. I also have a deep sense of respect for people who take their relationship with God very seriously.
