Truecaller was spotted testing a VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) calling service for its premium subscribers earlier this month, letting users make a voice call over mobile data or Wi-Fi network. Truecaller has now officially announced the eponymous app's VoIP calling feature that goes by the name ‘Truecaller Voice'. Thanks to the Truecaller Voice button in the app, users can now make voice calls over mobile data or Wi-Fi network to their contacts on the same platform. Truecaller's VoIP calling feature is now being rolled out in a staged manner and will soon be made available to all Truecaller app users on the Android platform.

The company claims that Truecaller Voice will allow users to make ‘free, high quality (HD), low latency' VoIP calls that will be connected quickly over mobile data or Wi-Fi network. For the sake of convenience, the Truecaller Voice shortcut has been added to in-app locations such as call logs, SMS Inbox, contact profile, and after call screen.

When the feature was spotted testing last week, it was thought to be limited to Truecaller Premium subscribers. But it now appears that Truecaller Voice will be made available to all Truecaller app users on the Android side of the mobile ecosystem. In an official press release, Truecaller has revealed that rollout of Truecaller Voice began on June 10, 2019 and it is currently underway in a phased manner.

So, if you have the Truecaller app installed on your Android phone and are yet to see the Truecaller Voice shortcut, rest assured that it will arrive soon. Also, the feature won't require a Truecaller Premium or Premium Gold subscription, as it will be made available to all Truecaller users on Android. We have received confirmation from Truecaller that the VoIP calling feature will make its way to the app's iOS version as well. The company says it will add support for iOS "in a few weeks".

Adobe, along with researchers from the University of California, Berkeley, have trained artificial intelligence (AI) to detect facial manipulation in images edited using the Photoshop software.

At a time when deepfake visual content is getting commoner and more deceptive, the decision is also intended to make image forensics understandable for everyone.

"This new research is part of a broader effort across Adobe to better detect image, video, audio and document manipulations," the company wrote in a blog post on Friday.

As part of the programme, the team trained a convolutional neural network (CNN) to spot changes in images made with Photoshop's "Face Away Liquify" feature, which was intentionally designed to change facial features like eyes and mouth.

On testing, it was found that while human eyes were able to judge the altered face 53 percent of the time, the the trained neural network tool achieved results as high as 99 percent.

The HongMeng OS-supported phones will be released in China, while international markets will get Huawei’s new OS at a later date as it will need to meet certain requirements.It also seems that the rumoured Hauwei Mate 30 will not be among the first to get the new OS as it may ship with entry-level and mid-range phones in China. While one presumes Huawei’s troubles with the US will affect its sales, reports suggest the company is on course to ship over 200 million units this year, beating last year’s figures.

According to a report by China Daily earlier this week, Huawei has already shipped 1 million devices with the new HongMeng OS for testing. The software is also said to be compatible with all Android applications and can support phones, computers, tablets, TVs, cars, wearables and so on.


Meanwhile, Google is trying to lobby for an Android exemption from the Huawei ban, warning the US administration that this could raise national security concerns. Chinese companies, however, are backing Huawei to release its new OS as they see it as a potential blow to the US crackdown.
