Perhaps a little dig into the history of the Jews will provide an insight into the reason why. Jesus came around the time of King Herod, who was a representative of the Roman emperor. Rome, through Herod and later, Governors like Pontius Pilate, persecuted the Jews in no small measure. They were executed in their thousands on the premises of religious insubordination. At about the same period, many personalities were popping up all over Israel and the region of Galilee - some as prophets, some as military insurgents - soliciting support, each one parading himself as a messiah to liberate Israel. As a consequence of this, the presence of Jesus in the region of Galilee at this particular period was shrouded by the chaos, thereby making him unheard of by so most Jews of his generation as he passed as one of the many claimants to the messianic crown. Also, his crucifixion didn't attract any special attention, because at about that same period about 4000 Jews were executed in Caesarea, 1500 in Antioch - some by crucifixion - for insubordination and other minor offenses. Therefore, the message of Jesus got to so many people in continental Europe before many of the Jews got to hear about him. Judaism has always been sufficient for them, to jettison it for a new religion like Christianity is not going be easy, even though the originator was also a Jew. |
