A man who stands for nothing, will fall for anything–-Malcom X

AN Igbo proverb says “If you know what will bring dispute don’t do it”. This implies that when a person or group of persons, decide to do things that will bring dispute, it is either that they have assessed their victim as a weakling, or they simply think that they can cause trouble, and get away with it.

I have wondered why after 55 years as a nation, Nigeria has remained unable to manage cows, and with all she has, as a people, she has failed woefully to address such a simple matter as keeping cows out people’s farms, gardens, and public places. The big surprise to any normal person is the ease and comfort, which our leaders in the past and present, rationalise, and condone such an unusual matter as the continued ravaging menace of the so called Fulani herds men in this country.

The real herdsmen of cows are Fulanis from the north and were usually simple minded humble fellows, but that was in the yester years. In the recent past, they have become infiltrated, corrupted, carry AK 47 riffles, rampaging, killing and destroying villages and communities, in the north, and the Middle Belt zones of Nigeria. They have spread their evil activities to the entire South of Nigeria, and is believed to have become a quick instrument of spreading terrorism in Nigeria.

The name ‘Fulani herdsmen’ conjure up horror in the mind of any that has read about or witnessed the destructions and killings by these men around the nation, be it in Plateau, Bauchi, Benue, Enugu, Abia, Imo, Delta, Ondo, Ogun, and Edo States, to name a few, where they have been reported to have destroyed farmlands, killed, wiped out villages, and communities, rape women, and committing all kinds of atrocities. The cows of the Fulani herdsmen have also become hazards to road users and commuters in metropolitan cities across Nigeria, and the question is: What is Nigeria waiting for, before it will deal the correct death blow to this festering evil?

Today, the Fulani herds men, have become kidnappers operating principally in the South of Nigeria! They chose none other than a former Secretary to this Federation, an accomplished and distinguished elder of this nation, a leader and elder states man from Yoruba land, as their prime kick off victim. They kidnapped Chief Olu Falae, subjected him to inhuman treatment not minding his age, collected ransom, and even went back to destroy his farm the more!

Enemies of Nigeria, they have targeted agriculture, to scare people from going to their farms in the South! If their aim is not to foment trouble, and dis stabilise Nigeria, why did they not kidnap any of their political leaders, Chiefs, Elders or Professors who is also a known farmer in the core north? Their purpose include to embarrass and desecrate the highest symbol of good, accountable and responsible leadership in the South of Nigeria.

If Chief Falae was a thief like they expected, he would have paid some people to run his farm, while he lived in the choicest part of any city, dishing out press conferences, newspaper interviews and pontificating on how to make Nigeria One, protected by a harem of security personnel. But Chief Falae represents much more than that, he represents the real leader that Nigerians must aspire to be like, a flag bearer to noble and responsible leadership, in Nigeria, and that is what the Fulani herdsmen and their supporters do not want.

Whoever that wants to keep Nigeria one has a task to stop the Fulani Herdsmen now, before it stops Nigeria.

The threat of Fulani herds men, is much bigger than that of corruption in Nigeria, because this nation may not remain in the next ten years if the evil of Fulani herdsmen is not stopped!

The reason is simple; from 1966 to 1970, Igbos of the South East sought to secede and failed because Yorubas teamed up with the North to defeat Biafra. During the Chief Abiola June 12 struggle, the Yorubas asked for their rightful mandate to lead Nigeria, and the north placated them by handing over power to Olusegun Obasanjo, OBJ,in 1999. In the recent 2015 elections, the north wanted power or a break up, but the Yorubas worked it out for them, with the pure and good heart of former President Goodluck Jonathan, trouble was averted. Now, the Yorubas have threatened secession, since the kidnapping of Chief Olu Falae, by Fulani herds men, if nothing is done now, if Nigeria fails to take this very seriously, and sort it our permanently and satisfactorily, it will mark the beginning of Nigeria’s Nunc Dimitis. God Forbid!

The Yorubas of the South West, of Ekiti, Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Ondo, and Osun, ( the ELOOOO) states, have all it takes to sustain the threat of secession if allowed or pushed to do so.

First they are the moderators, and shock absorbers of the political and economic pressures of Nigeria. They have the infrastructural facilities, the education, the knowledge, the financial resources and the spirit, to really keep Nigeria one.

Second, they have the land and the agriculture, to sustain their own if it becomes necessary and finally, there is something about the Yoruba man, that others do not consider, they have rich culture and tradition.

God will always be with a people, like them, because God is Love! If I for one, have not eaten the cow meat since the last 30 years, and I am healthy, I do not see why cows and their matters should cause a break up of my country.

Our leaders and law makers in the South, should legislate against the indiscriminate roaming and grazing of cows within their boundaries, providing for determinate actions against itinerant, irresponsible grazing and actions of herds men, who also should be profiled.

Those who claim to love Nigeria should contribute to ensure that The National Confab Report is implemented to the letter, without any manipulations, prevarications, demurs, and the likes, to give Nigeria peace.

CrimeDSS Commissions 385 Officers, To Tackle Insecurity by FREEEMANAN(op): 8:30am On Oct 19, 2015
DEPARTMENT of State Services (DSS) weekend, in Lagos, commissioned 385 cadet officers in a bid to combat the rising security challenges in the country.
DSS OPEARTIVES
The 385 officers were the lucky ones that successfully went through 10 months of rigorous professional, academic and physical training and were certified fit to serve the nation in their capacity as members of DSS, out of the 459 cadet officers that started the training late last year.
The officers were commissioned amidst promises by the DSS to collaborate more with other sister security agencies in its fight against insecurity and to ensure that recruitment into the Service was merit-based in keeping with its extant guidelines.
Speaking at the passing out parade at the State Service Academy (SSA), Lagos State, the Director General, SS, Mr. Lawal Daura, said gone were the days when misfits or non-eligible candidates found their way into the Service.
“The aim is to ensure that only the right calibers of people are recruited into the Service,” he said, adding “recruitment will be strictly in accordance with future needs of the Service and other compelling exigencies that may come up from time to time.”
He said the commissioning was an attempt by the Service to rejuvenate itself through injection of new blood and new vigour, saying that any institution that fails to change with the times or periodically re-evaluate itself would ultimately become irrelevant or extinct.
He said: “I believe the Service requires new blood and new vigour to tackle the challenges of insecurity, the fight against corruption and the war to resuscitate the economy. These are the key areas the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari has promised to tackle and the Department of State Service has seamlessly keyed into them.”
He urged the officers to uphold the values and ethics of the Service as advancement in the career was hinged on knowledge of the rules and regulation as well as quality of professional skills demonstrated by an individual officer. “During your training, the values of discipline, loyalty and commitment to duty were constantly drilled into you. Discipline within the Service cannot be over looked or compromised. It is the bedrock upon which the Service is built. You must familiarise yourself with the rules and regulations of the Service. Any breach of the said rules and regulations will not be accepted,” he stated.
In his remark as the special guest of honour, the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Gabriel Olonisakin, emphasised the need for synergy among security agencies in the country, stressing that such collaborative and cooperative posture should not only be sustained at all levels, but strengthened to create an environment where the collective security output would meet national aspirations.
He charged the newly commissioned officers to work assiduously at ‘this critical period in our national development when all hands are on deck to exterminate terrorism from Nigeria.’
“You are all aware of various security challenges pervading our nation. These challenges include the activities of Boko Haram terrorists, armed banditry, kidnapping, militancy of various forms to mention a few.
In order to overcome these challenges, the whole nation relies on active participation of relevant stakeholders of which Department of State Services is one,” Olonisakin added.

Science/TechnologyBermuda Triangle Mystery - Facts And Myths by FREEEMANAN(op): 11:43pm On Oct 18, 2015

BERMUDA TRIANGLE: THE DEVIL'S TRIANGLE.

Bermuda Triangle is a strange triangular area on the Atlantic ocean where many ships sailing through it or planes passing over it have disappeared without a trace. In few of such cases where wrecks could be found, the crew had vanished. And such incidents have been happening since centuries.

So looking for the facts behind the mystery of Bermuda Triangle? More than 1000 ships and planes have disappeared in the triangle area over the past five centuries and continue to do so. And all these happen when apparently there are no human errors, equipment failures or even natural disasters. Strangely, the ships and aircraft just vanish when everything seems to be okay. Many believe that Devil is at play here and therefore call the area also as Devil's Triangle.

The facts however are quite far from what is generally known or believed to be true. There are many stories and myths created through sheer imagination by writers who have used them rampantly to draw publicity to their books. In many cases, the facts got blurred. But one thing which is beyond doubt is, far too many incidents have taken place in this area for it to be ignored casually or interpreted to be just another normal ocean area. Well, I have been digging deep into the incidents and analyzing the facts and evidences. This section is an account of those findings.

So where is Bermuda Triangle located and how large is the area? Is there a map? And do you get to know when exactly you cross the line and enter the area? By the simplest of all definitions, Bermuda Triangle is located off the South-Eastern coast of the United States and in the Atlantic Ocean. The three corners of the triangle are: Miami (in Florida); San Juan (in Puerto Rico); and Bermuda (a north-Atlantic island).
Lost Planes & Ships in Bermuda Triangle

Here are some of the most amazing stories of planes and ships that disappeared while crossing the triangle area. As you visit the links, you will also see my findings behind such great mysteries of all times. In most cases I have discussed and explained the possible causes, in some cases I have also given excerpts from official reports that were produced by US Navy, US Air Force or US Coast Guards after completing the search operations. And in several cases, I have given updates on further findings.

Flight 19: The Avenger planes of Flight-19 took off from the U.S Naval Base of Florida for a routine training session on an afternoon of December 1945, but strangely this time they never returned.

PBM Martin Mariner: When all hopes for the above Flight-19 planes were quickly fading, two Martin Mariner planes (flying boats) were sent by US Navy to search them out. One came back, but the other didn't. Read the full story to know what happened.

Tudor Star Tiger: Star Tiger, a Tudor Mark-IV aircraft disappeared in Bermuda Triangle shortly before it was about to land at the Bermuda airport.

Fight DC-3: The flight DC-3 NC16002 disappeared when it was only 50 miles south of Florida and about to land in Miami.

Flight 441: A Super Constellation Naval Airliner disappeared in October 1954.

C-54 Skymaster: Apparently it seemed to be a sudden thunderstorm that had disintegrated the plane. But there was much more to the story.

Mary Celeste - The Ghost Ship: Known as one of the ghost ships of Bermuda Triangle, Mary Celeste had many misadventures even before her mystery voyage in 1872. But this time, although the ship could be salvaged, none on board could ever be traced.

Carroll A. Deering: This is another ghost ship of Bermuda triangle which created one of the biggest maritime mysteries of all times. While returning from Rio de Janeiro of Brazil to Portland in Maine in January 1921, it was found abandoned and derelict at Diamond Shoals, off Cape Hatteras in North Carolina. But all the 11 crewmen including the captain were missing. They vanished for ever and never to be found again.

Marine Sulphur Queen: This 524-foot carrier of molten sulphur started sail on Feb 2, 1963 from Beaumont, Texas with 39 crew. It was reported lost in Florida Straits on February 4, and lost for ever.

Ellen Austin: The Ellen Austin, an American schooner, met with another ship in Bermuda Triangle. The other ship was moving in full speed but strangely had nobody on board.

USS Cyclops: Disappearance of the carrier ship U.S.S. Cyclops in Bermuda Triangle has been one of the greatest mysteries of the sea.

USS Scorpion: USS Scorpion (SSN-589) was a Nuclear powered submarine of United States Navy that disappeared in Bermuda Triangle area in May 1968.

Those were only few cases. Check out Bermuda Triangle Incidents for a list of all the major indents in the triangle area along with fascinating stories for many.
Popular theories solving the mystery
So what caused the ships and aircraft to disappear mysteriously? There have been many research and explorations done to uncover the mystery. There is no single theory that can explain all the incidents of disappearances. The ships and aircraft have been victims of different circumstances and situations. Things happened quickly and unexpectedly. While many theories have come out, there are few that come close to solving the Bermuda Triangle Mystery.

Methane Gas trapped under the sea floor can erupt, and as a result can lower the water density and cause ships to sink like a rock. Even planes flying over it, can catch fire and get completely destroyed during such gas blowout.

Sargasso Sea is a strange area that has no shores and bounded only by water currents on all sides. Many ships passing through it have been stranded and made motionless.

Electronic Fog, a strange thick cloud appears from nowhere and engulfs a ship or a plane. Instruments begin to malfunction, and finally the ship or the aircraft vanishes without a trace.

There are many other theories that try to solve or explain the mysteries of Bermuda Triangle. Check out the Theories of Bermuda Triangle that describes most of such strange factors that would have caused the disappearances.

And there are also theories that took recourse to some supernatural events to explain the disappearances. Check out Supernatural Theories to know about them.

PoliticsAlleged Oil Sector Fraud: ‘ Why FG Is Not Charging Diezani, Others Now’ by FREEEMANAN(op): 6:51am On Oct 05, 2015
*Investigation still on-going, says security source

Ex-NNPC official faces arrest

By Soni Daniel, Northern Regional Editor & Dapo Akinrefon

ABUJA — As anxiety mounts over the identities of suspects arrested alongside former Petroleum Minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke, indications emerged last night that she and other suspects might not be charged to court in Nigeria soon.

This came as chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee on Corruption, Prof. Itse Sagay (SAN), said he was not shocked about the former minister’s arrest, especially as she had earlier been indicted by the Senate, noting, however, that his committee had no role to play in her prosecution.

According to a top security official working with one of the anti-crime agencies, the reason is that investigation into the money laundering case and bribery is yet to be concluded.
Nigeria's Minister of Petroleum Diezani Allison-Madueke

The official, who spoke in confidence with Vanguard last night, said that the investigation had not reached a point of pressing charges against the suspects, citing the length of time it took both Nigerian and British security agencies to investigate a former political office holder, before trial.

The official said: “Look, the idea of charging Diezani or any of the suspects to court does not arise now because investigation is going on in Nigeria and overseas.
“You will recall that it took some years to investigate the case of a former political office holder in Nigeria and London before we arrived at a decision to charge him to court,” the security source said in response to Vanguard’s enquiry last night.

That notwithstanding, the British national crime agency has ordered Mrs Diezani Allison-Madueke and four other suspects, who were arrested and released on conditional bail last Friday, to report today at the Charing Cross Police Station.
There were fears that they could be charged today or this week for their alleged involvement in money laundering and bribery.

Ex-NNPC official faces arrest
But as the investigation progresses, a top-ranking former official of a subsidiary of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, might be picked up by security agencies as part of the probe of the former minister going on in London and Nigeria.

A source close to the matter, told Vanguard that the top ex-oil official from the South-South, who held sway in many NNPC subsidiaries before working directly with the embattled former minister, ran into trouble because of numerous questionable deals he allegedly effected during the period.
The man is described by many top oil sector officials as someone who aided and abetted many financial misdeeds, which caused the national oil firm a fortune during Mrs Allison-Madueke’s tenure.

Although the official was surreptitiously removed from office shortly after the minister left office last May, the man is said to be under the radar of both Nigerian and British security agencies.

It could not also be established last night whether he would be picked up and moved to London as part of the investigation by the British National Crime Agency, NCA.

A source in NNPC described the former official in question as having played a key role in causing the state oil firm to lose huge sums of money to private pockets through questionable deals sanctioned by political influence.

The other two oil barons reportedly arrested alongside the former oil minister, were said to be her close business associates who had their way in virtually all major oil deals in the NNPC when the minister was in charge.

Both suspects, said to be from the South-West were reported to wield considerable financial muscle, having also benefitted immensely from the subsidy regime of the last administration, which cost the nation a whopping N1.2 trillion yearly from the N425 billion, which the Yar’Adua regime spent.

One of the suspects, aged 21, is said to be related to the former minister but his identity was still being kept under wraps by the NCA as at last night.

An official of the British National Crime Agency, who spoke with Vanguard, had explained that the identities of all the suspects would only be unveiled at the point of charging them to court.
The official explained that the law establishing the NCA does not allow it to name those being investigated before charging them to court.
The official said: “Indeed, we cannot name the five persons who were arrested and granted police conditional bail until we are ready to charge them to court.

“The law does not permit us to do so and we will release appropriate information to the media as the case progresses,” the official said in response to an enquiry by Vanguard.
The Presidency has washed off its hands in the current ordeal of the former minister and her accomplices, saying, however, that the arrests might be Britain’s response to the recent plea by President Muhammadu Buhari to world leaders to help Nigeria recover its stolen wealth. The Senior Special Assistant on Media to the President, Garba Shehu, is reported to have confirmed this to a television station when asked to confirm whether the arrest of the former minister by Britain was requested by the Presidency.

I’m not shocked, says Sagay
Reacting to the arrest and subsequent bail of former Pretroleum Minister, Diezani Allison-Madueke, chairman of the newly constituted Presidential Advisory Committee on Corruption, Prof. Itse Sagay (SAN) said he was not shocked and threw his weight behind the former minister’s arrest.

Sagay, in a chat with Vanguard last night, said: “That is the correct thing to do, it is to be expected. No one is surprised because we all knew her story, even when she was minister, we all know the number of times she was indicted by the Senate. Her story is out there, it is no shock to me at all.”

Asked about the role of his committee on the issue, he said: “We are not an executive agency, we don’t arrest, we don’t prosecute. Our role is more of co-ordination of the activities of various agencies.

“We deliberate and find out what their shortcomings are, what can make them more effective, what they need in order to combat corruption effectively. We make recommendations to make them stronger and more effective, we also look at the whole administrative justice system, see the weakness in them, why cases are taking such a long time, why the prosecutions are failing.

“What we are doing is to make the system stronger and more effective. We also ensure cooperation among the ICPC and EFCC and Department of State Service.”

On whether his committee will be advising the Federal Government to extradite Mrs Allison-Madueke, he answered in the negative, adding that it was “the work of the Ministry of Justice”.
On the possibility of his committee appearing in a London court to give evidence, Sagay said his committee would not be appearing in court, stressing again that it was the job of the Ministry of Justice.

On whether or not evidence will be sent against her to the UK if necessary, Sagay said that was the job of the EFCC.

‘’Let me tell you what we do. We will strengthen the EFCC to do its job. For example, we can help them in training for investigation, prosecution but when it comes to actual activity, they are the ones to do it. We are behind the scene.”

Crime15 Injured As Hoodlums Attack Yinka Ayefele In Ondo by FREEEMANAN(op): 6:41am On Oct 05, 2015

Akure—A popular musician, Yinka Ayefele, narrowly escaped being lynched weekend at Ijare area of Ondo State as some hoodlums went on rampage and vandalized his vehicles and musical instruments.

Some of his band boys, however, were not as lucky as they were beaten silly when the hoodlums discovered that their leader had escaped from the scene of a party in the town.
They complained that Ayefele got N3 million for the performance and could not drop anything for the local boys in the town.

Reports had it that about 15 persons were wounded as the hoodlums vent their anger on those invited to a burial ceremony held at Odo Oja street in the town.
Ayefele was in the town to perform at the burial of 85-year-old Madam Ebunoluwa Lydia Odumakinde.

He was reportedly smuggled out of the town as the hoodlums went wild due to his refusal to settle them for performing in the town.
Eyewitness account said the hoodlums reportedly sent their leader to Ayefele band leader to ask for the “ boys settlement” but was turned down.

Angered by the feedback from their leader, the hoodlums were said to have mobilised others to the venue of the party as
another person was reportedly sent to the leader of the band who told them that there was no provision for them.

Sensing that the hoodlums were poised for a showdown, t he band leader pleaded with them to exercise patience till the end of the party when their boss would be informed.

Vanguard learned that the hoodlums after the assurance, placed themselves in strategic positions to be able to monitor the movement of the musician.

Eyewitness said the hoodlums became unruly when they were later told that their boss turned down their request.

The big tent under which the party took place, tables and chairs were reportedly damaged, while bottles were recklessly broken by the rampaging hoodlums.

Vanguard gathered that Ayefele was, thereafter, smuggled out of the venue of the party as the hoodlums surged towards where he was staying ( back stage).

Hell was let loose as the hoodlums descended on those who were eating and drinking after enjoying the performance of Ayefele.

Normalcy was later restored after over one hour of disruption of the party by the hoodlums.
Contacted, the new spokesman of the state police command, Femi Joseph, said there was no official report of the incident.

But a police officer at Ijare, told Vanguard that the timely intervention of policemen in the town saved the situation from degenerating into a full blown crisis

10. Clement VII, reigned 1523-1524

Clement VII (Giulio di Giuliano de’ Medici) brought to the Papal throne a high reputation for political ability, and possessed in fact all the accomplishments of a wily diplomat. However, he was considered worldly and indifferent to what went on around him, including the ongoing Protestant reformation.
The Pope’s wavering politics also caused the rise of the Imperial party inside the Curia: Pompeo Cardinal Colonna’s soldiers pillaged the Vatican City and gained control of the whole of Rome in his name. The humiliated Pope promised therefore to bring the Papal States to the Imperial side again. Soon he found himself alone in Italy too, as the duke of Ferrara had sided with the Imperial army, permitting to the horde of Landsknechts led by Charles III, Duke of Bourbon, and Georg von Frundsberg, to reach Rome without harm.

Charles of Bourbon died during the long siege, and his troops, unpaid and left without a guide, felt free to ravage Rome from May 6, 1527. The innumerable series of murders, rapes and vandalism that followed ended forever the splendours of the Renaissance Rome. Clement was kept as a prisoner in Castel Sant’Angelo for six months. After having bought some Imperial officers, he escaped disguised as a peddler, and took shelter in Orvieto, and then in Viterbo. He came back to a depopulated and devastated Rome only in October 1528. Subsequently the Pope followed a policy of subservience to the Emperor, endeavouring on the one hand to induce him to act with severity against the Lutherans in Germany, and on the other to elude his demands for a general council.

Pope Clement VII is remembered for having ordered, just a few days before his death, Michelangelo’s painting of The Last Judgment in the Sistine Chapel.

9. Leo X, reigned 1513-1521

Pope Leo X is known primarily for his papal bull against Martin Luther and subsequent failure to stem the Protestant Reformation, which began during his reign when Martin Luther (1483–1546) published the 95 Theses and nailed them to the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg. When he became Pope, Leo X is reported to have said to his brother Giuliano: “Since God has given us the papacy, let us enjoy it.”

Under his pontificate, Christianity assumed a pagan character, which, passing from art into manners, gives to this epoch a strange complexion. Crimes for the moment disappeared, to give place to vices; but to charming vices, vices in good taste, such as those indulged in by Alcibiades and sung by Catullus.” Alexandre Dumas

His extravagance offended not only people like Martin Luther, but also some cardinals, who, led by Alfonso Petrucci of Siena, plotted an assassination attempt. Eventually, Pope Leo found out who these people were, and had them followed. The conspirators died of “food poisoning.” Some people argue that Leo X and his followers simply concocted the assassination charges in a moneymaking scheme to collect fines from the various wealthy cardinals Leo X detested.

Not every aspect of his pontificate was bad; he raised the church to a high rank as the friend of whatever seemed to extend knowledge or to refine and embellish life. He made the capital of Christendom the center of culture.

The Venetian ambassador (Marino Giorgi) had this to say of the Pope:
The pope is a good-natured and extremely free-hearted man, who avoids every difficult situation and above all wants peace; he would not undertake a war himself unless his own personal interests were involved; he loves learning; of canon law and literature he possesses remarkable knowledge; he is, moreover, a very excellent musician.

Having fallen ill of malaria, Leo X died on 1 December 1521, so suddenly that the last sacraments could not be administered; but the contemporary suspicions of poison were unfounded.

8. Alexander VI, reigned 1492-1503

Born Rodrigo Borgia, Pope Alexander VI is so famous for his debased reign that his surname has become synonymous with the debased standards of the papacy in his era. Alexander’s elevation did not at the time excite much alarm, and at first his reign was marked by a strict administration of justice and an orderly method of government. But it was not long before his passion for endowing his relatives at the church’s and his neighbours’ expense became manifest. To that end he was ready to commit any crime and to plunge all Italy into war.

Alexander VI had three sons in addition to his famous daughter Lucrezia. During his pontificate virtually everything he did was to further the position of his children and family in the world. In order to dominate the Sacred College of Cardinals more completely, Alexander, in a move that created much scandal, created twelve new cardinals, among them his own son Cesare, then only eighteen years old, and Alessandro Farnese (later Pope Paul III), the brother of one of the Pope’s mistresses, the beautiful Giulia Farnese.

The death of the Pope is well recorded by Burchard: Alexander VI’s stomach became swollen and turned to liquid, while his face became wine-coloured and his skin began to peel off. Finally his stomach and bowels bled profusely. After more than a week of intestinal bleeding and convulsive fevers, and after accepting last rites and making a confession, the despairing Alexander VI expired on 18 August 1503 at the age of 72. It is highly likely that he was poisoned, though others speculate that he may have died of malaria.

7. Urban VI, reigned 1378-1389

Urban VI was the first Pope of the Western Schism (which ultimately lead to three people claiming the Papal throne at the same time). Urban VI was the last Pope to be selected from outside of the College of Cardinals. Once elected, he was prone to outbursts of rage. The cardinals who elected him decided that they had made the wrong decision and they elected a new Pope in his place (he took the name of Clement VII and started a second Papal court in Avignon, France).

The second election threw the Church into turmoil. There had been antipopes, rival claimants to the papacy, before, but most of them had been appointed by various rival factions; in this case, the legitimate leaders of the Church themselves had created both popes. The conflict quickly escalated from a church problem to a diplomatic crisis that divided Europe. Secular leaders had to choose which pope they would recognize.

The schism was repaired forty years later when all three of the (then) reigning Popes abdicated together and a successor elected in the person of Pope martin V.

6. Boniface VIII, reigned 1294-1303

Due to the King of France (Philip IV) taxing the clergy of the Church to help finance his wars, Boniface VIII released one of the most important papal bulls of Catholic History: Unam Sanctum. It declared that both spiritual and temporal power were under the pope’s jurisdiction, and that kings were subordinate to the power of the Church.
“Now, therefore, we declare, say, determine and pronounce that for every human creature it is necessary for salvation to be subject to the authority of the Roman pontiff” (Porro subesse Romano Pontifici omni humanae creaturae declaramus, dicimus, definimus, et pronuntiamus omnino esse de necessitate salutis).

This is considered to be an infallible declaration of the Catholic Church. Philip retaliated against the bull by denying the exportation of money from France to Rome, funds that the Church required to operate. Boniface had no choice but to quickly meet the demands of Philip by allowing taxation only “during an emergency.”
Philip’s chief minister declared that Boniface was a heretic, and in return, Boniface excommunicated the King. On September 7, 1303 an army led by Nogaret and Sciarra Colonna of the Colonna family surprised Boniface at his retreat in Anagni. The King and the Colonnas demanded that he resign, to which Boniface VIII responded that he would ‘sooner die’. Boniface was beaten badly and nearly executed but was released from captivity after three days. He died a month later, on October 11, 1303.

5. Benedict IX, reigned 1032-1048
Benedict IX was Pope from 1032 to 1044, again in 1045, and finally from 1047 to 1048, the only man to have served as Pope for three discontinuous periods. He was also one of the youngest Popes (reigning from around age 18-20). He reportedly led an extremely dissolute life, and also allegedly had few qualifications for the papacy other than connections with a socially powerful family, although in terms of theology and the ordinary activities of the Church he was entirely orthodox. St. Peter Damian described him as “feasting on immorality” and “a demon from hell in the disguise of a priest” in the Liber Gomorrhianus, a treatise on papal corruption and sex that accused Benedict IX of routine homosexuality and bestiality.
He was also accused by Bishop Benno of Piacenza of “many vile adulteries and murders.” Pope Victor III referred to “his rapes, murders and other unspeakable acts. His life as a Pope so vile, so foul, so execrable, that I shudder to think of it.”
Benedict gave up his papacy for the first time in exchange for a large sum of money in 1044. He returned in 1045 to depose his replacement and reigned for one month, after which he left again, possibly to marry, and sold the papacy for a second time, to his Godfather (possibly for over 650 kg /1450 lb of gold). Two years later, Benedict retook Rome and reigned for an additional one year, until 1048. Poppo of Brixen (later to become Pope Damascus II) eventually forced him out of Rome. Benedict’s place and date of death are unknown, but some speculate that he made further attempts to regain the Papal Throne.

4. John XII, reigned 955-964
Through his mother Alda of Vienne, John XII was a seventh generation descendant of Charlemagne. John was the temporal and spiritual ruler of Rome and during his pontificate he virtually turned it into a whorehouse. Moral corruption in Rome became a major problem. After crowning Otto I Emporer of Germany in order to secure his support in a war against Berengar II of Itlay, he changed his mind and began communicating with Berengar. Otto learnt of John’s treachery and returned to Rome after defeating Berengar. He called a council which deposed John who was hiding in the mountains, and elected Leo VIII in his place. John, with a large group of supporters, returned to Rome to depose Leo VIII before Otto had even left. Otto pledged to assist Leo against John but before the matter went any further, John died. It is rumoured that he was killed by the husband of one of his mistresses.
An account of the charges against him in the Patrologia Latina states:
They testified about his adultery, which they did not see with their own eyes, but nonetheless knew with certainty: he had fornicated with the widow of Rainier, with Stephana his father’s concubine, with the widow Anna, and with his own niece, and he made the sacred palace into a whorehouse. They said that he had gone hunting publicly; that he had blinded his confessor Benedict, and thereafter Benedict had died; that he had killed John, cardinal subdeacon, after
castrating him; and that he had set fires, girded on a sword, and put on a helmet and cuirass.

3. Stephen VI, reigned 896-89
Pope Stephen VI was consecrated (possibly against his will) by Pope Formosus who, during his reign, was excommunicated for leaving the Papal seat and “conspiring to destroy the papal see”. He was eventually forgiven and returned to Rome. When Stephen VI came the Papal Throne, he had the body of formosus exhumed and put on trial (this is the famous Cadaver Synod). Formosus was accused of transmigrating sees in violation of canon law, of perjury, and of serving as a bishop while actually a layman. Stephen had Formosus’ papal vestments removed and two fingers from his right hand cut off. Formosus’ body was thrown in to the Tiber. After the Synod, public opinion turned against Stephen. He was deposed in an uprising and strangled to death.

2. HONORIUS I
Like Liberius, Honorius I was condemned and excommunicated for heresy by the sixth general council in 680. The heresy in question was Montheism in which Jesus is seen as a divine-human, rather than the orthodox belief of physeis that he is both fully God and fully man. Patriarch Sergius of Constantinople wrote to Honorius asking him to decide the question that was causing much division at the time. Instead of clarifying the view of the Church, Honorius did nothing. His lack of action was so scandalous that for 3 centuries, each new Pope had to state at his coronation that he:
“smites with eternal anathema the originators of the new heresy, Sergius, etc., together with Honorius, because he assisted the base assertion of the heretics.”
The Roman Breviary contained the condemnation of Honorius on the Feast of St Leo II right up until the 18th century.

1. Pope Liberius
He is the first Pope not to be canonised a saint. He reigned during the height of the Arian crisis during which a large majority of the Church believed that Jesus was not God, but merely a man. The Arian heresy was fought against by the Patriarch of Alexandria Saint Athanasius who consecrated Bishops without permission.
Pope Liberius, rather than defending Athanasius, signed a document that supported those against him and condemned Athanasius. Nearing the end of his pontificate he recanted his signature and reinstated Athanasius. While the Pope did not embrace the heresy himself, he did not use his power fully to put an end to it. His reign did nothing to stop the confusion spreading throughout the Church.

PoliticsMost Politicians Guilty Of False Assets Declaration – Okunrounmu by FREEEMANAN(op): 6:54pm On Sep 26, 2015
Chairman of the 2014 National Conference Convocation Committee, Senator Femi Okunrounmu, said on Saturday that more than 90 per cent of politicians in the country are guilty of false declaration of assets.

Okunrounmu stated this while interacting with newsmen on the sidelines of the 80th birthday celebration of the Founder of O’odua Peoples Congress, Dr. Frederick Fasehun, in Ikeja, Lagos.

He said if anybody had done anything that was against the law or Constitution, the person should be called to account.

According to him, it is good and part of the fight against corruption, saying the fight should be holistic.

“It should cover all the people who are guilty, not just target a few individuals. Ninety per cent of politicians declare assets falsely, so the law should go after all the people that are guilty of such false declaration of assets; try them and bring them to justice.

“They shouldn’t just target one or two people,” he said.

On the National Confab, Okunrounmu alleged that the All Progressives Congress had always opposed it.

“May be, the Constitution is favourable to some parts of the North; many northern APC leaders have always opposed a national confab.

“May be, one can understand why they oppose a confab, but those who know how the current Constitution came to being know that it was fashioned by successive military rulers, mostly from the North,” he added.

He said the southern wing of the APC had always agitated for a national conference, but opposed to the 2014 confab “for political reasons”.

On the delay in cabinet formation by President Muhammadu Buhari, the former confab convocation committee chairman said there was no provision for the President to administer Nigeria without a cabinet.

PoliticsStop Playing Politics With Hid’s Death – Fayose Warns by FREEEMANAN(op): 8:57am On Sep 26, 2015
Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose has warned Nigerian politicians against playing politics with the death of the late matriarch of Awolowo dynasty, Chief (Mrs) Hannah Idowu Dideolu Awolowo.

Fayose, who spoke in Ikenne-Remo, Ogun State when he paid a condolence visit to the Awolowo family, was accompanied by the Senator representing Bayelsa East Senatorial District, Ben Murray-Bruce.
He said the deceased should not be celebrated for political reasons, advising that politicians should rather sustain her legacy and that of her late husband, Chief Obafemi Awolowo.

The Ekiti governor noted that visiting the Awolowos should not just be a one-off thing aimed at scoring cheap political points and making publicity stunts.

Others who also paid condolence visits yesterday included former Head of Interim National Government, Chief Ernest Shonekan; prominent industrialist, Dr Oba Otudeko, and the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Samuel Odulana, who was represented by the Osi Olubadan, Senator Lekan Balogun, and Ekerin Olubadan, High Chief Abimbola Ajibola.

Fayose said “One thing I like to remind all politicians; it is in our way to make politics out of people’s lives, to celebrate them for political reasons.
