Anambra State Governor, Chief Willie Obiano, has rejected the advice of his predecessor, Mr. Peter Obi, on the funding of public hospitals and schools, describing such advice as deceitful and uncharitable.

Obiano, while speaking on the advice at Onitsha during the 50th year anniversary of Saint Charles Borromeo Hospital, noted that the state government under his watch has recorded unprecedented success in the area of healthcare delivery and will not be deterred by the utterances of the former governor.

The Chairman, National Securities and Exchange Commission, SEC, and former Anambra State Governor, Mr. Peter Obi, had earlier in his speech at the anniversary celebration, regretted committing much of the state’s resources in schools and hospitals during his tenure and called on his successor to stop funding public schools and hospitals.

According to him, government should not be involved in funding health and education as their impact is least felt, adding that most of the vehicles donated to schools and ambulances donated to hospitals were all in bad condition except the ones given to private and mission hospitals.

“Left to me, I will advise the governor to stop funding public hospitals and schools, as nothing is working there,” he said.

In a swift reaction, Governor Obiano, who was represented on the occasion by Commissioner for Health, Dr. Joe Akabuike, expressed shock that the former governor could make such comment in the public, even as he admitted that his government will continue to improve healthcare of the citizens by partnering with missions and development partners in the state.

“It is very wrong and improper for the former governor to make such statement to the hearing of people, although that is his opinion. If he is able to handle government hospitals for eight years, I think our government should do better. If you give attention to government hospitals, it will work.

“Chief Willie Obiano has restated his commitment in repositioning primary healthcare in the state by introducing Primary Health Agency. We have upgraded the general hospitals to specialist hospitals in all the three senatorial zones and the Ministry of Health has directed the onshore, offshore management of hospitals in the state. We have purchased flying boats to reach other areas and many unprecedented achievements in the health sector.

“So, we are not stopping the assistance we give to both public and private hospital as both are complimentary” he emphasised.
