I prefer the artstyle and tone of the first movie over any other part of the franchise I have seen.
Even the new anime series felt odd and less serious compared to the first movie.

From what I've heard so far, the storytelling style of the manga was actually chaotic, cartoonish and over-the-top. The 1995 movie just adapted in a completely different direction from that and it sort of became the standard for subsequent onscreen adaptations.

It was very jarring to see the behavior of the characters in the new show, especially after just watching the 1995 movie. But it's actually growing on me

Weekend Movie
Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence (2004) 7.5/10

I didn't really connect with this as much as I did with the first movie. They were doing too much with the dialogue. It felt like the writers were trying too hard to go for the philosophical vibe. As a result, the core message got lost on me.

Also, the absence of Major Kusanagi for most of the movie was another thing I really felt. I like Batou, but as a supporting character and his dynamic with the Major. I really didn't enjoy him as the main character in this movie and his dynamic with Togusa, good as it was, pales compared to when they were a trio in the previous movie.

Even though they changed the art style for this movie, the animation was still great and looks good after 20 years.

The story itself was also decently interesting. At its essentials, it's a standard police-detective story, with extra philosophical layers.

Kenji Kawai is still in the music booth but it felt like he just recycled the tracks from the last movie so there wasn't really any improvement here. It was still good, though.

P.S: Read a post that said, story wise this was closer to the tone of the manga than the previous movie while the new Science Saru show is more faithful to characters, especially Major Kusanagi and I've been trying to reconcile these two concepts in my head. Almost makes me want to make out time to read the manga.

I will be there for my 'girl' Tanya, I didn't know Daemons of the Shadow Realm has finished airing. I usually wait for my 2 weeks or more before downloading from the last episode I stopped.

Daemons hasn't finished airing. They're airing 24 episodes so episode 13 should be dropping this weekend.
Wish Witch Hat Atelier had done the same thing. I knew there was little chance of them gaining a massive following with 13 episodes.

Very, very inferior. The Scar-Jo one is one of those live-action adaptations that do a disservice to their source material.

Re Zero, Slime, Daemons of the Shadow Realm, Iruma-kun and Bookworm from the just concluded Spring season are also airing their 2nd cours. So this will be a very stacked period for me. I'll definitely be eating well for the next 3 months.

Wrapped up The Legend of Vox Machina S4 last weekend and this might just be their best season yet, even if that Pike character arc didn't sit well with me. I'll like to make out time to do a full review later.

Moving on to My Adventures with Superman S3, Reacher S3 and Ted Lasso S3. Got X-Men: The Animated Adventures (1992) lined up next. I still don't know when I'll make time to catch up on Invincible.

Ghost in the Shell (1995) 9/10

Rewatching this and then the sequel, Innocence, next week in preparation for Science Saru's take on the GitS franchise this month.

This is still one of the most amazing anime made after 30 years. Not just the story, but the art and animation still hold up after 3 decades.

GitS' major theme revolves around identity. Who are you when your memories are altered, modified or erased?
As we advance in the AI era and a lot of people spend more time online than offline, these questions become even more relevant than they were 3 decades ago. How do we process information when it becomes increasingly difficult to tell what's real or fake anymore?

I don't think I appreciated the music in this movie properly the first time I watched it but on this rewatch, I can't help but appreciate Kenji Kawai's marvelous work in the studio. The haunting score lends itself in enhancing the eerie atmosphere the movie is going for and I absolutely love it.

Masamune Shirow cooked with this take on the cyberpunk genre and it has not only continued to inspire other stories but has somehow managed to grow in relevance with time.

Moving on to Innocence this weekend.

P.S: Another fun aspect about watching old movies about the future is when their future timeline is your present. We're 3 years away from 2029 in which this movie is set and it's a bit amusing to compare what people thought the future would look like in 2029 with our present.

lmaooo bruhhhh...This was my first watch actually 😩, dreading it for years because of how sad the premise was, so a rewatch is way further down the line 🥲

I may rewatch... many years into the future to teach my kids about the horrors of war.

Thanks to the weather, had enough free time, and went on a 4 movie marathon in 1 day, and my #last 4 watched is just so bleak, each movie was trying to outperfom the other in which was the saddest and most depressing of the lot fgs 😩😭

So when will you be rewatching Grave of the Fireflies? 😁

Wish this aired after Vox Machina S4 but thankfully, it's an episode per week so I can watch it alongside or just put it on hold till next 2 weeks when Vox Machina finishes airing.
