PRODA achieves breakthrough, produces bio-fuel to fuel the Igbo jeep.

ENUGU — THE Projects Development Agency (PRODA) Enugu, yesterday, announced it had produced bio-fuel for movement of automobiles, generators and big machines.

Director-General of the research institute, Prof. Goddy Onuoha, told reporters on a tour of the institute’s facilities that the bio-fuel, generated from the distillation of ethanol, was produced as part of PRODA’s efforts to give value to raw materials in the country.
He said the institute had also innovated renewable energy and coal briskets for cooking, an alternative for kerosene which produces smokeless fire.

Onuoha said in the face of globalisation, the institute was trying to actualise its mandate of transforming Nigeria from an import-driven to import-substitution nation.

He explained that despite inadequate funding faced by the institute, it had been able to make innovations geared towards improving the living standard of Nigerians within its limited resources.
On-going Federal Government’s reforms, he said, did not constitute any threat to the existence of PRODA.

He said: “PRODA is not threatened by privatisation. The import of privatisation is to reinvigorate those ones that are already becoming moribund like Coal Corporation. It is aimed at giving them funds to do their job. It is also geared towards providing better training for staff to enable them meet globalisation.

“So, it is not taking a toll on us. Though the issue of right-sizing affected some of us and what do you have. But that is really part of it. It is a strategy aimed at shaping and reinvigorating them to make them efficient,” he said.

Onuoha said arrangements had been concluded to employ well qualified people, explaining that most of the people that lost their job lacked the necessary training needed to work in the institute.

He, however, called for re-tooling of PRODA saying: “If you look at what we have here now, you will find out that the equipment here were the ones that were here before the war.”

PRODA, Enugu established in 1971 is one of the research institutes under the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology.

Ibeto to Commence Cement Production in Ebonyi
From Ahamefula Ogbu in Port Harcourt, 10.10.2007

Managing Director, Ibeto group of Companies, makers of Ibeto Cement and Chairman of Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN), Sir Cletus Ibeto, has said he is setting up a factory that will produce cement from Limestone in Ebonyi State.
According to him, though the business was capital-intensive, he has already done feasibility studies, which shows that the raw materials for the production was abundant enough that they can supply other African countries.
He said this when the Director General of SMEDAN, Mrs Modupe Adelaja visited the N12 billion cement factory in Port Harcourt, and congratulated him for overcoming the set back of closure.
“When the factory starts production, I will use this same jetty which took us 10 months to sandfill before pilling to export cement to West and other African countries,” he said.

It is a prerequisite to have the type offacility we have here to export the product even ifyou manufacture from limestone”, he said.Ibeto stated that the setting up of an average cementproduction factory from limestone takes about threeyears but insisted that he was already into it andwill not look back since it was part of the promiseshe made to President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua prior to thereopening of his factory. He said “I have forgiven and forgotten, only God knowswhat happened” in an apparent reference to the closureof his business by former President Olusegun Obasanjoso that he can concentrate to take his businesses tothe heights he has planned which needs a clear vision. He told the delegation which was later joined by theRivers State Commissioner for Commerce, Mrs. RoselynKonya who also praised his efforts and vision as suchan enterprise was capable of engaging the youths andcheck restiveness.Ibeto also told Adelaja that it was not true that heabandoned SMEDAN which he is Chairman but pointed outthat since he was not in production, he could notchair a body on which what he used to ascend theposition was not longer in existence. He explained that now he was back into production, hehas adequate platform to attend and direct business ofthe body, adding, “I have no other business other thanproduction since I am not a trader”. In her speech, Adelaja said, “We are here to rejoicewith you on the reopening of your multi-billion nairafactory, it is the grace of God that saw you throughthat period and we are happy that it is over”.She extolled the entrepreneurial qualities of Ibeto,as it takes only a man filled with such to go throughthe trying period and asked him to always remainresilient as his efforts were putting food on thetable of many families. She further appealed to the Rivers State government todo everything to protect genuine entrepreneurs likeIbeto as their contributions would help stemrestiveness. In her speech, Konyan said that the reopening of thefactory and the business going on there was a proofthat Port Harcourt was safe and not as bad as reportedespecially as Governor Celestine Omehia has moved tocheck the issue of cultism. She promised to complain to the Commissioner for Worksover the condition of the access road to the plantwhich Ibeto said he built but it fell into disrepairduring the period they were thrown out of businessthrough the Obasanjo closure.

In a PDP caucus meeting recently,OBJ and Dr Alex Ekwueme was reported to have cursed themselves out when the man believing to own PDP -OBJ-ordered that the party should rally around Etteh and see that she is not disgraced.Dr Ekwueme was said to have gotten up in an excellent speach to demand a refrain from towing the line of selective application of the rules to party members. He said that it is no secret that OBJ's government was known to have fought corruption and made "due process"a common language in Nigeria. Why then is the story now different if the same system indicted and exposed several senate presidents including Wabara for a mere 50million-that is,in comparism to 628million!OBJ could not take it any longer and left, dragging Ahmadu Ali with him.UMYA wanted to go and talk to OBJ but was accousted by Dr Ekwueme and others who, reminded him that as president,he is now the leader of the party, that the interest of Nigeria far supercedes any other and anybody who doesn't want due process in Ettehgate does not love Nigeria.

Folks, truth be told, laws are made to be adhered to strictly no matter whose ox it grinds. There is no way anybody would take Nigeria serious if we continue with business as usual. If members of the house of representatives fails in their civic responsibility of ensuring that Etteh goes,Nigerians have a moral obligation to protest till she goes.It would deter others and lead us all to a better Nigeria.Ettehs greatest problem is that our awareness as Nigerians for good governance is awakened and we would not continue to siddon dey look.

Is Innoson group of Companies same as Standard Organization of Nigeria (SON)? If SON refuses to do its job like NAFDAC is doing, is that why we cannot produce our own car? Make the car and let SON evaluate it. We still have drug manufacturing companies in Nigeria, even as NAFDAC is performing its duty meticulously.

For the first time in their lives, Igbo people are said to be marginalising the Yoruba. This was made known at the maiden edition of an event held last year where there was an attempt to unite English/Igbo home video actors (Nollywood) and the indigenous, especially Yoruba movie practitioners (Yoruwood), who had always complained of discrimination in the industry by the English/Igbo practitioners. The event was coordinated by Ambassador Segun Olusola and Dele Momodu, publisher of Ovation magazine.

Even in developed countries--they keep trying to improve in what they have instead of jumping into new projects. We manufacture "high tech" corruption in Nigeria but still cannot maintain it! cheesy But not to make light of the situation, using Volkswagen engines in BMWs are not exactly what you mean by maintenance right? Safety first please. See problems with mechanics and spare part dealers in Nigeria. All ready to rip you off without considering what the human life is worth.

Nigerians are known to cut corners like we witnessed with sosoliso airline and the Aborishade saga as Minister of Aviation. Can we please start with bicycles and work our way up? It is easier to survive falling from a bicycle made in Nigeria that to have a whole car explode up your rear end from "trial and error" manufacturers. See what is going on with China now? Substandard goods in the name of manufacturing. Like we do not have enough safety concerns? undecided Just like advocating for the acquisition of "nuclear" technology?

Saudi deports Reps’ Deputy Minority Whip - For travelling with fake visa
Kola Oyelere, Kano - 10.10.2007

SAUDI Arabian authorities, have deported the Deputy Minority Whip in the House of Representatives, Honourable Suleiman Abdurrahman-Kawu Sunmaila, over an alleged use of fake visa to enter the country for Umrah (lesser hajj).

The name of the Deputy Minority Whip was contained in the list of 50 Nigerians deported by Saudi Arabia for using fake visas to travel to the Holy Land for the lesser hajj.

The Deputy Minority Whip who represents Takai /Sunmaila Federal Constituency of Kano State, along with the other 49 Nigerian pilgrims were immediately deported on their arrival in Saudi Arabia.

The lawmaker had travelled through the Malam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano. Commenting on the incident, Hon Sunmaila, while speaking with journalists on the telephone, said he had concluded arrangements to charge the travelling agency to court over the fake visa which he said was obtained for him to travel to the Holy Land.

“I was so baffled that the visa given to me by the travelling agency was fake as it was discovered by the Saudi Arabian authorities on getting to the Holy Land, the visa was found to be fake and I was deported along with other Nigerians.

“What happened was that my passport was taken for visa to the travel agency, together with those of some other parliament members and after they secured the visa for us, we travelled to Saudi Arabia but it was unfortunate that when we got to Saudi Arabia, the visa was discovered to be fake,” Hon. Kawu-Sunmaila said.

Local assembly plant to launch its first set of automobiles

AN indigenous auto assembly plant based in Enugu, Innoson Group of Companies, is to launch its first automobile products in Nigeria in December.

A director in the company, Mr. Augustine Onwuka, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) at the weekend in Enugu that the vehicles included a jeep and an 18-seater bus.

According to Onwuka, "these vehicles will be affordable to many Nigerians as they will sell below N1 million."

The director said that all the body parts, upholsteries and tyres are being manufactured in the country, but the engines are being imported.

The factory is located at Umudim, Nnewi in Anambra.

A branch of the company also produces plastic chairs, kitchen utensils, motorcycles, suspended ceilings, wall boards, toilet seats, as well as pre-paid metre boxes for the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN).

The director urged Nigerians to patronise made-in Nigeria products in view of their improved qualities.

``In no distant time, many Nigerians will own houses and cars because our company is geared toward improving people's living standards,'' he added.

Supreme Court okays death sentences on two Islamic militants

By Tobi Soniyi, Abuja

The Supreme Court has confirmed the death sentences passed on two Islamic militants, Abubakar Dan Shalla and Musa Yaro, who in company of others, slaughtered another Muslim for allegedly insulting Prophet Muhammed.
In two judgments delivered on Friday, a panel of five justices of the court, comprising Justices Sylvester Onu, Adesola Oguntade, Mariam Mukhtar, Walter Onnoghen, and Tanko Muhammad, unanimously turned down the appeal of two out of the six militants who killed the deceased, Alhaji Abdullar Umaru.

The event leading to the killing took place on July 14, 1999 in Randali Village in Kebbi State.

According to the lead judgment delivered by Justice Oguntade, on that fateful day, word went round that Umaru had insulted Prophet Muhammed, which made some militants, including the two condemned persons, pass judgment on him that he must die.

They went to the village where the deceased was, arrested him and slaughtered him by slicing his throat.

“As adherents to the teachings of the Holy Quran, the appellant and the other accused persons accepted that they had a duty to kill the deceased as contained in the Holy Quoran.”

They were consequently arrested and arraigned before a high court in Birnin-Kebbi on a three-count charge of criminal conspiracy, abatement and culpable homicide. This is contrary to sections 97, 85 and 22 (a) of the Penal Code.

When the trial commenced, the six accused persons pleaded not guilty to the charges even though they admitted to killing the deceased.

They were accordingly found guilty and sentenced to death on January 19, 2000 by the trial court.

According to Justice Oguntade, “The manner in which the appellant and the other accused persons behaved during their trial by not calling evidence to deny the allegations against them, and by admitting that they killed the deceased show without doubt that they laboured under a notion that they had a duty under Islamic injunction to kill the deceased.”

They were convicted and sentenced to death. Two of the six convicts appealed to the Court of Appeal and lost.

They again appealed to the Supreme Court, claiming that the defence of justification and provocation should have availed them.

In rejecting the argument, the Supreme Court noted that the insulting words allegedly uttered by the deceased were not stated to enable the trial judge to know that they were capable of provoking the convicts and justifying their actions.

Justice Oguntade said, “In the circumstances of this case, since the trial court was not told the words alleged to have been uttered by the deceased or the act he did which were contrary to the injunction of Islam as contained in the Holy Quran, and which justified his killing, the trial court could not be criticised for not engaging in a futile speculation.

“In any case, even on the assumption, (although without proof), that the deceased had in some way done any thing or uttered any word which was considered insulting to the Holy Prophet Muhammad, was it open to the appellant and others with him to constitute themselves into a court of law to pronounce the death sentence on another citizen?

“Plainly, this was jungle justice at its most primitive and callous level.

“The facts of this case are rather chilling and leave one wondering why the appellant and others with him committed this most barbaric act.”
