Hello Nairalanders,

I need your advice urgently.

I rented a self-contained apartment in Lagos, and my rent is valid until the end of October this year. Just recently, I was informed that the landlord has sold the house.

Now here’s what happened:
• They refunded half of my rent (without my prior agreement),
• And issued me a 3-month notice to vacate.

I never agreed to terminate my tenancy early or to receive a refund — they just gave me the money and served the notice. I feel like I’m being indirectly forced out before the agreed expiration date of my rent.

Please, I want to know:
1. Is this legal under Lagos tenancy law?
2. Can they harass or pressure me out of the house since it’s now sold?
3. What steps can I take if I want to stay until my rent expires in October?

I’ve heard that once rent is paid and acknowledged, even a new landlord must honour the agreement. Is this true?

Please, lawyers and those familiar with Lagos tenancy law, I’d appreciate your input. I don’t want to be bullied or treated unfairly and also 3 months is too short for me

If you accepted the refund then you don't have a case, Sorry.

Acceptance of the refund is an evidence that your tenancy agreement is over.

You had the right to reject the refund and insist that you must live out your tenancy agreement to the end. And the court will be on your side.

But you did not do that.
The law isn't on your side.

Secondly, I am angry at our society. How can a man confidently feels he can force himself on a lady and get away with it? What kind of society do we have?

Thirdly, I am angry at myself. I am angry because I feel helpless. I can't let this thing go. I have to deal with this man, but I don't know how to do it without putting my cousin in a difficult position. I have tried to let her know that it is not her fault and that the man needs to pay for this, but she's been begging me to just let it go. She only confided in me because she's really scared of getting pregnant.

According to her though, there was never any real penetration, but the man (who is a high ranking government official) actually "released" ON her, not IN her. (Does that even make sense?)
How can I handle this issue right now? For me, I am planning to go all out and let hell break loose and let the heavens fall if they have to.

I have a sister and daughter, I can't imagine somebody under any condition forcefully deflowering them or raping them.

If you don't have their approval you mustn't gain carnal knowledge of them.

Guy, we are talking about justice here, Your cousin or sister must cooperate with you and the relevant authorities for justice to be done. This is not just about your sister, its also about innocent and vulnerable young girls out there that he will still rape. HE MUST BE STOPPED!

You must proceed with evidence, she must cooperate for evidence to be gotten. Otherwise that has escaped justice and other ladies or younger women will still fall victim to this predator.

You must get all relevant authorities involved right away, Excerpt she made up the story or she is another game of vendetta against the man.

If you can't see to it, then involve others who can, the earlier she goes to the hospital for medical report the better the chances for justice.

Our relationship just ticked the 1yrs 3months mark. I told him at the beginning that I’d love for him to propose to me b4 we start getting intimate as most relationships built on intimacy don’t last.
