Nigerians Scramble for Ghanaian, Other W’African Nations’ Passports 31 May 2013 Chinedu Eze Nigerian travellers are now disguising as citizens of other countries in West Africa, especially Ghana, and obtaining their passports which they use to travel to Asia and other parts of the world. THISDAY learnt that it is mainly Nigerians who travel to China that take the passports of other countries in the region and the reason is because China gives about four weeks visa to Nigerians and do not extend it when it expires, but the country gives up to six months visa to Ghanaians, Senegalese, Guineans and others in the region. When Nigerian businessmen go to China to buy, manufacture or process goods, four weeks are not always enough and if they leave the country at the expiration of their visa and instruct their agents to arrange and ship their consignments, they usually short-change them and as their goods purchased by the Nigerian is arriving the country, their dubious partners in China would export the same goods to the country and sell it at cheaper price, thus damaging the market for the Nigerian importer. So for the Nigerians to stay till they are able to get their goods, they need visa that allows them longer time, hence they go for Ghanaian and other countries’ visas. A top Nigeria Immigration Service official explained to THISDAY that Nigeria is reciprocating the Chinese gesture because visa policy is usually based on reciprocity. “We give them 14 days visa but we don’t have the enabling machinery to flush them out whenever their visa expires so many Chinese overstay their visa in Nigeria. Some of them even take transit visa and disappear as soon as they arrive in Nigeria.” The official also said Immigration is supposed to have the machinery to smoke out the Chinese citizens that have overstayed their visa, but decried the attitude of Nigerian government officials who move to protect them in the name of encouraging investors, in spite of the law that says that they should be deported. “Government officials do not want the law to operate so they intervene in the job of Immigration officials, but the Nigeria Immigration Service used to have investigation and inspection department whose duty is to check those who have over stayed their visa and also patrol the boundaries to stop illegal immigration into the country. But when these Chinese overstay and you want to do your job, these government officials will intervene and may even sack you.” The Immigration official said the body needs logistics to be able to effectively carry out its responsibility, including patrol vehicles at the borders, communication equipment and others. “In the 1980s Nigeria Immigration Service was patrolling the nation’s borders and preventing people of other countries from gaining entry. Today, the Boko Haram menace would have been checked if Immigration is adequately equipped. Now, these Chinese are having easy run in Nigeria because government is protecting them and those menial jobs that should be done by Nigerians are being taken over by the Chinese who are now flooding into the country.” http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/nigerians-scramble-for-ghanaian-other-w-african-nations-passports/149002/ |
soulfood: GHANIANS ARE GONNA BE ALL OVER HERE BEEFING AND CRYING FOUL SOON. A FATHER WILL ALWAYS BE A FATHER. WELL DONE WIZKID ON TAKING AZONTO INTERNATIONAL.you are talking like a f00l. why would Ghanaians 'be all over' when Ghana is recognised all over the world as the originator of the Azonto dance? just look at the introduction to get an idea..... The title derives from a popular dance movement in West Africa, originating in Ghana. The dance involves traditional African moves like knee bending and hip swaying, combined with wild, complex hand movements that supposedly mimic everyday activities Chei, Ghana is too much ooooh. We lead, others follow......and copy us ![]() |
okpara ugo: I wish i could find out your employer and help repartriate you to ghana.Ma guy there are lots of nigerians living in Ghana who constantly insult Ghana on this forum every day. what are you going to do about them? there is one azzhole called casubaba- a classical example. |
dasparrow: @BoldedLook let me make one point clear and unequivocal. You obviously don't see the outright provocation by lots of nigerians and the needless insults their hurl at Ghanaians on this forum, huh? As far as I am concerned, Ghanaians are only reacting to the propensity of nigerians to routinely abuse them on this particular forum. You expect Ghanaians to accept insults on NL because this is a nigerian forum? you know that is impossible, huh? As far as I am concerned, wherever Ghana or Ghanaians become an issue, you'll find some of us there. whether it is cediland, randland, dollarland,francland.... it doesn't matter. Ghanaians reserve the right to counter anything said about them or their country on any platform. It doesn't matter what the platform is, so long as their country is an issue then they have the right to respond. There is a key principle in journalism known as the Right of Reply. So if you think you guys can turn your nairaland into a platform for denigrating other countries then I can assure you NL will always be a battleground. I can assure you that if you nigerians stop badmouthing Ghana/Ghanaians, no Ghanaian will insult anyone here. I personally will make sure of that. so, the ball is in your court? You think banning will stop Ghanaians from reacting to insults from nigerians on NL? If you like ban, unban and ban again, so long as nigerians insult Ghana, Ghanaians will always find a way to react. The only way for this whole situation to stop is for you nigerians to stop insulting Ghanaians. If you do that, I will make sure no Ghanaian insults you people. That is my promise to you all. |
bootlegaz: My Ghanian neighbors, what is your country's GDP per capital? Its just for knowledge sake, and can some one tell me that of Nigeria?GDP ni, PDP ko. answer that stupid question yourself. what is your gdp per capita? hope you know what GDP per capita means, huh? Let me educate you. GDP per se does not tell much about a country, especially when that country is so endemically corrupt. You know why? GDP is simply an aggregate of goods and services produced within a defined socio-economic environment. in the case of nigeria, your GDP is anchored on oil revenues. the problem with a country like nigeria is that while on paper you earn so much in oil revenues, in reality these revenues end up in the pockets of a few. I hope you can see the futility of using the size of GDP to meaningfully assess how a country is faring. The United Nations Human Development Index is a better barometer of evaluating the wealth and well-being of a state and its citizens. I am not surprised therefore that nigeria is so poorly rated on the UN Human Index. For example, how many nigerians have access to electricity, potable water, good roads, quality education, personal security, access to basic health care, gainfully employed, life expectancy, poverty level, access to affordable food etc. that will give you a better idea that just quoting some meaningless GDP figures! |

You are angry because he is Ghanaian, right? in terms of nigerian bashing, you know we always respond in good measure, pressed down until it overflows, huh? We are always up to the challenge, any time. Bash us and we'll grind you, trust me! In terms of outsourcing, Ghana has long been leader in that sector. Perhaps nigeria can learn a thing or two from the Big Brother. Why outsourcing could be Africa’s next big opportunity BY Imara Africa Securities team | Feature Articles, ICT | May 11, 2011 http://www.howwemadeitinafrica.com/why-outsourcing-could-be-africas-next-big-opportunity/9793/ Reuters reports that intense competition in India’s business process outsourcing (BPO) industry has forced technology firm Spanco Ltd to expand to Africa where it expects to earn nearly half of its profits within two years. Pravin Kumar, chief executive officer of Spanco BPO Services, said his company sees Africa as a solid opportunity for the firm due to its proximity and almost similar time difference to the firm’s major source markets – Europe and the United States – compared with India. “We see a turnover of about US$100 million purely from the BPO business by 2013 from Africa. This year we will do about $40 million,” said Kumar. “In two years’ time at least 40% of our profits will come from here (Africa) purely in the BPO business.” Spanco will launch operations in six countries including Kenya, Burkina Faso, Tanzania, Chad, Niger and Nigeria, riding on a contract the firm won from India’s Bharti Airtel to manage the mobile provider’s contact centres. The BPO industry is worth an estimated $30 billion in India but competition is intensifying. “The BPO industry is completely saturated in India . . . the benefit of expanding in India is not as much as that of Africa,” said Kumar. Spanco sees a substantial amount of its profits coming from Africa driven by the untapped potential in the continent’s BPO industry. Kumar said by August this year 3,000 people will be working in its African operations. The number is expected to go up to 50,000 by 2013 and Spanco plans to make several acquisitions in the course of its expansion drive. Ghana has done particularly well in terms of positioning itself as an attractive BPO destination. A report, titled “The 2009 AT Kearney Global Services Location Index,” which ranked countries for their ability to handle BPO, using a weighted combination of scores on 43 measurements grouped under three main criteria: financial attractiveness; people skills and availability; and business environment, found that while India led the rankings globally, Ghana had the top overall ranking in sub-Saharan Africa. “Ghana scored the highest (followed closely by India) out of the 50 countries ranked on financial attractiveness, which measures compensation cost, infrastructure cost, tax and regulatory cost. Ghana (3.26) scored considerably higher than South Africa (2.28). According to the Kearney report, Mauritius also ranked favourably at 25th overall, thanks to strong people skills and a favorable business environment. Although Ghana ranked high in the Kearney survey for BPO desirability, South Africa remained the largest offshore destination in Africa by far, operating a successful contact-centre cluster in Cape Town along with several research and development operations around its aerospace hub in Pretoria. The above once again highlights that there is certainly more to Africa’s potential than commodities. Article written by the Imara Africa Securities team.
