All the ethnic group in southern Nigeria have distorted history because they were not literate compared to the North that are literate before the colonial era came due to Islamic education. Benin is as confused as other ethnic group in southern Nigeria.

I have read it in different history books from secondary and even my days in tertiary institution.

Yes, the Oba of Lagos do send isakole(means taxes he collects in Lagos) to the Oba of Benin.
Even some of the first chiefs of Lagos, two of them (Obanikoro and Eletu-Odibo) came from Benin.

The ancient Benin kingdom at its peak expanded to Lagos but lost everything during the Invasion 1897 by the British.
