Travel / Really? Lagos Ranks 2nd On World’s Least Liveable Cities. by gadgetman: 1:50pm On Aug 17, 2017
Despite the progress, Nigeria’s commercial capital, Lagos, has made since the advent of democracy in 1999, the city has been ranked second on the World’s Least Liveable Cities.

Lagos ranks 2nd, behind Damascus and ahead of Tripoli and Dhaka on the annual report by the Economist.

On the other spectrum, Melbourne has topped a list of the World’s Most Liveable city for the seventh year running but terrorism and diplomatic tensions are eroding living conditions worldwide, an annual report from the Economist has found.

The Australian city was ranked number one out of 140 cities, slightly ahead of the Austrian capital Vienna, with the Canadian trio of Vancouver, Toronto and Calgary completing the top five.

“This is a win for all Victorians, who contribute so much to making Melbourne the best place to live in the world,” said Victorian state Premier Daniel Andrews.

The survey, released Wednesday, scores cities on five broad categories: stability; healthcare; culture and environment; education and infrastructure.

The Economist’s Intelligence Unit found that medium-sized cities in wealthy countries fared best.

“These can foster a range of recreational activities without leading to high crime levels or overburdened infrastructure,” the report said.

Major hubs like New York, London, Paris and Tokyo were hives of activity but lost points due to high levels of crime and overcrowded public transport.

More broadly, global stability continued to weaken due to the increase in terror-related incidents world wide.

“Violent acts of terrorism have been reported in many countries, including Australia, Bangladesh, Belgium, France, Pakistan, Sweden, Turkey, the UK and the US,” the report found.

“While not a new phenomenon, the frequency and spread of terrorism have increased noticeably and become even more prominent.”

The United States had seen a decline in a number of its cities over the past few years related to growing unrest.

“This stems in part from unrest related to a number of deaths of black people at the hands of police officers,” the report found.

“In addition, the country has seen protests held in response to President Trump’s policies and executive orders.”

It said increased diplomatic tensions — from Russia and the Ukraine to North Korea’s nuclear threat and Iran’s relationship with its neighbours — was leading to declining stability scores around the world.

Conflict was the main factor for those cities finishing on the bottom of the survey, with Syria’s Damascus at number 140, behind Nigeria’s Lagos, under threat from Islamist groups like Boko Haram and Libyan capital Tripoli, caught up in middle eastern strife.

Health / 7 Medical Myths That Even Doctors Believe In by gadgetman: 9:47am On Jun 02, 2017
Myth: Shaved hair grows back faster, coarser and darker

Fact: A 1928 clinical trial compared hair growth in shaved patches to growth in non-shaved patches. The hair which replaced the shaved hair was no darker or thicker, and did not grow in faster. More recent studies have confirmed that one.

Here's the deal: When hair first comes in after being shaved, it grows with a blunt edge on top, Carroll and Vreeman explain. Over time, the blunt edge gets worn so it may seem thicker than it actually is. Hair that's just emerging can be darker too, because it hasn't been bleached by the sun.

Myth: You should drink at least eight glasses of water a day

Fact: "There is no medical evidence to suggest that you need that much water," said Dr. Rachel Vreeman, a pediatrics research fellow at the university and co-author of the journal article. Vreeman thinks this myth can be traced back to a 1945 recommendation from the Nutrition Council that a person consume the equivalent of eight glasses (64 ounces) of fluid a day. Over the years, "fluid" turned to water. But fruits and vegetables, plus coffee and other liquids, count.

Myth: Fingernails and hair grow after death

Fact: Most physicians who queried on this one initially thought it was true. Upon further reflection, they realized it's impossible. Here's what happens:

"As the body’s skin is drying out, soft tissue, especially skin, is retracting," Vreeman said. "The nails appear much more prominent as the skin dries out. The same is true, but less obvious, with hair. As the skin is shrinking back, the hair looks more prominent or sticks up a bit."

Myth: We use only 10 percent of our brains

Fact: Physicians and comedians alike, including Jerry Seinfeld, love to cite this one. It's sometimes erroneously credited to Albert Einstein. But MRI scans, PET scans and other imaging studies show no dormant areas of the brain, and even viewing individual neurons or cells reveals no inactive areas, the new paper points out. Metabolic studies of how brain cells process chemicals show no nonfunctioning areas.

The myth probably originated with self-improvement hucksters in the early 1900s who wanted to convince people that they had yet not reached their full potential, Carroll figures. It also doesn't jibe with the fact that our other organs run at full tilt.

Myth: Reading in dim light ruins your eyesight

Fact: The researchers found no evidence that reading in dim light causes permanent eye damage. It can cause eye strain and temporarily decreased acuity, which subsides after rest.

Myth: Eating turkey makes you drowsy

Fact: Even Carroll and Vreeman believed this one until they researched it. The thing is, a chemical in turkey called tryptophan is known to cause drowsiness. But turkey doesn't contain any more of it than does chicken or beef.

This myth is fueled by the fact that turkey is often eaten with a colossal holiday meal, often accompanied by alcohol — both things that will make you sleepy.

Myth: Cellphones are dangerous in hospitals

Fact: There are no known cases of death related to this one. Cases of less-serious interference with hospital devices seem to be largely anecdotal, the researchers found. In one real study, cellphones were found to interfere with 4 percent of devices, but only when the phone was within 3 feet of the device.

A more recent study, this year, found no interference in 300 tests in 75 treatment rooms. To the contrary, when doctors use cellphones, the improved communication means they make fewer mistakes.

"Whenever we talk about this work, doctors at first express disbelief that these things are not true," said Vreeman said. "But after we carefully lay out medical evidence, they are very willing to accept that these beliefs are actually false."

Politics / Throwback Photo Of Ojukwu As He Declared Independence Of Biafra On May 30th,1967 by gadgetman: 9:50am On May 30, 2017
As today marks the 50th Anniversary of the end of the Biafra War in Nigeria, this is a throwback photo of the leader of the breakaway Republic of Biafra, Colonel Odumegwu Emeka Ojukwu popularly known as 'Ikemba' reading a speech as he declared the independence of Biafra on May 30th, 1967.

Following the declaration, in July 1967, the head of Nigeria’s military government, General Yakubu Gowon declared war and attacked Biafra for 30 months.

After three years of non-stop fighting, in fear of being assassinated, General Odumegwu-Ojukwu in 1970 handed over power to his second in command, Major-General Philip Effiong and traveled to Ivory Coast where he was in exile for 13 years.

In 1982, the Federal Government of Nigeria under President Shehu Aliyu Usman Shagari granted an official pardon to Odumegwu-Ojukwu and opened the road for a triumphant return for him.

He contested as a presidential candidate three times under his party, All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) but lost. Until his illness, he remained the party leader.

Ojukwu died in a London Hospital in 2011, at the age of 78.

Properties / NICON Building Collapse: Lagos Seals Structure, Orders Integrity Test by gadgetman: 9:04pm On Apr 28, 2017
Read the press statement below...

The Lagos State Government on Friday sealed off the building that partially collapsed at Nicon Town Estate on Admiralty Way in Lekki on Thursday which reportedly killed two persons and left one other severely injured.

The State Government has also ordered integrity test to be conducted on the structure. Speaking to reporters after carrying out on-the-spot assessment of the incident, the State’s Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Tpl. Wasiu Anifowose, said the building would remain sealed till the completion of investigation by relevant government agencies, while the report of the investigation would be made public in due course. He said officials of the Ministry immediately moved to site after being alerted of the incident, while the workers at the scene were evacuated.

He said: “Yesterday, I was in my office when I had a call that there was a partial building collapse in Lekki and I immediately mobilized my officers to site. They have given me their report and the onus is on me to ascertain the situation of things and that is why I am here.

“Based on our preliminary investigation, we discovered that it was the roof gutter of the building under construction that fell off the main house and a vibrator was also used. “At the moment, the State Government has taken the necessary steps; we have evacuated all the people that worked on the building and the property has been sealed off. It will remain sealed until we conclude our investigation,” Anifowose said.

He, however, faulted the owner of the building for not displaying the Project Board on the site of the construction as required, but said the ongoing investigation would reveal actual state of things.

“The Project Board usually contains information such as the name of the architect, name of the engineer, the name of builder and the approved building plan. There is nothing of such here but like I said, we will go back to the office and check the file. There are two levels of approvals for this type of construction and that is approval from the management of the Estate and then approval of the State Government. “Since this is a case of partial building collapse, the first thing we are going to do is to conduct integrity test.

The test will confirm to us whether the construction can continue or otherwise, after which the government will do the needful and the public will hear from us,” Anifowose said.

Religion / Shocking! 5 Police Officers Go BLIND While Trying To Arrest Tb Joshua’s Son by gadgetman: 6:37pm On Apr 17, 2017
We gathered that five policemen allegedly went blind while trying to arrest a Zambian preacher known as Prophet Shepherd M Mesala.

According to information gathered, the Zambian prophet who happens to be one of T.B Joshua’s spiritual son, had been ‘ambushed’ by policemen who wanted to arrest him at his house.

According to Zambian watch, about five of the policemen were said to have gone blind in the process of trying to get him arrested around midnight.

Prophet Mesala revealed this in a testimony he gave to Lungu on their Youtube channel and Facebook.

In a twist of events, the policemen resorted to begging the prophet to restore their sight, which he reportedly refused to do, adding that he’d only agree to that if his friend, Mr Chilufya Tayali, was released.

The police are however yet to release a statement regarding the issue.

Crime / FBI Declares Nigerian Man - Declan James, Wanted Over Alleged $5M E-mail Scam by gadgetman: 6:20pm On Apr 17, 2017
US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has declared a Nigerian man identified as Kelechi Declan James, wanted for perpetrating scams worth N2 billion.

According to reports posted on the FBI official website, Kelechi has been scamming people and has so far managed to make $5 million (N2,025,000,000) off unsuspecting victims.

The FBI has since declared him wanted, and even went further to offer a reward in exchange for information on his whereabouts.

The general public has been offered a reward of $1,000 (N405,000), to anyone with valuable information.

Here’s what they shared on their website:

“FBI agents are looking for the public’s assistance in locating Kelechi Declan James. He has federal criminal charges against him from an investigation by FBI New York’s Cyber Crime Task Force. James is known to frequent the Brooklyn neighborhoods of East New York (Crescent Street and Loring Avenue; Vermont Street between Blake Avenue and Dumont Avenue), Brownsville, Bedford-Stuyvesant (MacDougal and Hull Streets), Crown Heights (Park Place and Utica Avenue), Flatbush (E 29th and Avenue D), and East Flatbush (East 51st and Winthrop Street). The FBI is offering a $1,000 reward for information that leads to his arrest.

James is 32 years old, 6’0″ tall, and approximately 175 pounds. He is a Nigerian national, has brown eyes and black hair, and may have a beard. Anyone with information as to the whereabouts of James is urged to contact law enforcement immediately. The FBI can be reached 24 hours a day at (212) 384-1000. He is not considered to be violent in nature.

As alleged in a complaint sworn out of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, James, along with four other co-conspirators, ran a business e-mail compromise scheme that resulted victim losses of more than $5 million for their victims.

As part of scheme, James and his co-conspirators defrauded victims across the U.S. by tricking them into wiring money to bank accounts the victims believed were owned by family members, friends, or business associates. They did this in two ways: by overtaking an e-mail account of an individual trusted by the victim and then requesting money be wired to a bank account; or by developing a relationship of trust with victim like an Internet romance and then asking the victim to wire money. As soon as the money was wired, it would be moved from one account to another, and the funds would be withdrawn. James’s role in this scheme was to withdraw the money from bank accounts.”
