Light weight distros like?

Which is better for a beginner?

Search online for lightweight distros and take your pick. I have never had any reason to try them but I know they exist for systems with low specs.

but from 4 GB ram up ?

4Gb is recommended by most popular distros like Ubuntu, Linux Mint etc for comfortable usage but it doesn't mean you can t go lower and install a very lightweight distro

Which Laptop spec will be good for Linux?

Anybody in Port Harcourt
It is the other way around, buy what you can afford and look for the Linux distro that fits your laptop's spec.

Hello guys, I’m here because I’ve exhausted google search queries on how to solve this. I just installed Xubuntu on an old laptop. It boots fine but on getting to the login screen I can even see anything, I’ve tried all option including editing the grub commands before boot. I attached a picture of the screen. Any idea on how to solve this?

For some reason, the image I uploaded is not showing. I attached a link to the image. Remove spaces

https :// ibb. co/JCnYL8Y

So did it display properly during the install process?

good morning everyone, I'm having an issues with my laptop ( Toshiba satellite a300) I've been using debian 11.

I closed the laptop for it to sleep, when I came back to continue and I tapped the power button it didn't wake. the laptop was on but the screen was not showing anything or even light.

I then used the power button to shutdown and reboot it, the screen is not showing any thing or even light. what could be the problem and solution

thanks in advance

Do you see the startup display (Toshiba logo) when you power on the laptop? Can you enter your BIOS just to see your screen come up? Try and boot from a live USB to check if your Debian install is the issue.

I really wish to learn more about it.
Whatever it is you currently do with your computer running Windows or Mac OS you can do same on Linux.

Question: I got a new system which came with ubuntu, my hard drive is from my old Windows system, it recognises it but it doesn't display files, is there any way to make it show the videos? Or I have to use VMs and install windows there

I am guessing this is a desktop system? How did you connect your old Windows PC to the system?

Hi Gargoylesmiles

I was gifted a laptop BUT it didn't come with any OS.
Please, how do I install Linux on it?

I can guide you through an installation. This should serve a good guide.

I have the version 20.04LTS installed. The problem is; I'm not seeing the wireless connection option in my settings. I researched about it, and was told it was the driver that wasn't installed. I'll have to install the driver myself.
This Linux is really stressing my life angry almost everything I want to do, I have to Google it. To install app sef na Wahala. I need my Windows back abeg

Ok, do you have access to a wired network with internet connection? Then come back to this Additional device area. Scan and install the Broadcom driver. That should resolve the issue.

I tired applying the first option, but it showed me "error".

What was the error? Please send a screenshot. You are in the right place.
Also by just seeing a part of your wall paper your wallpaper, I am guessing that is an older Ubuntu version. Can you install 20.04 LTS version (link below) of Ubuntu and see if this problem persists?

My PC is not showing "wireless" Option.

How do I fix it?
NB I have Ubuntu installed.

Check additional hardware settings to see if your wifi card requires proprietary driver. You might need internet from another source (wired) if your system needs to download it.

Update.
I've given up on the Ubuntu, since if I try it again, it's a serious hanging issue. So I got lubuntu 20.04, loaded pretty quickly and doesn't freeze that much..Now my next issue is that it can't detect the Qualcomm Atheros I use.

Is the Atheros for your wifi card? Find a way to get internet via wired network and see if you find proprietary software for the card in Additional hardware part of the OS.

I'm using VMware now and the issue is that they always say disk space for partition is not enough..
I am assuming you have uninstalled Virtual Box and deleted all its associated files and VM to give you room to install VMWare and create new VMs. Can you post a screenshot of the error message?

Hullo, I have issues with my Ubuntu on Virtual box 6.1.28.VM fails to start over a "failed to load VMMR0.r0" error.I've installed the extension packs and the guest additions and it's still the same thing.its the only option of using the Ubuntu I can think of RN because I dunno how to make it a live boot...

It seems this is a VBox issue and you need to delete extension files and reinstall Virtual box

1) sudo rm -rf /Library/Extensions/VBox*
2) re-install VirtualBox

My first question is how did you create and confirm the creation was successful? Screenshots will help.

does ubuntu ran all exe files?

No it does not by default but there are several ways to run *.exe files in Linux distros.
For starters you can install Wine (winehq dot org) on Ubuntu to run Windows application on it.

Oh great, with Ubuntu you need to check the printer Settings > Printers

Computers / Re: Ubuntu Linux by Gargoylesmiles(m): 8:18pm On Feb 20, 2021
What distro are you running on your PC? From my experience the popular distros like Ubuntu and its derivatives will discover that printer automatically.

Ajayiawo:

The Printer is on USB Connection to my Linus Laptop.

Is the printer on your network or USB connection to your Linux laptop?
Most Linux distros come with printer drivers and should discover your printer easily.

Is it because of looks you got Linux?

Look and feel is also part of the appeal so it is not wrong to say the OS looks plain. That is why distros like Deepin, Elementary and Zorin exist. The beauty of Linux is that you have several options to choose from (Freedom of choice). That is why I recommend people trying out as many distros as they can before they settle for one.

Not to sound pessimistic but I will say everything is wrong with the drive if the connector is broken since the connector is the gateway to your data in the drive. Will like to know how you solve this if & when you do. All the best.

Nothing is wrong with the drive. The connector got broken, that's why am asking if you can recover the file from it?

Sometimes I get segmentation fault for no reason. Though I think it's cause my memory is too low. And even on Ubuntu if I'm not using the default browser tabs crash every 2-3 minutes

Your RAM might be giving up gradually. You might want to change it soon.

thanks i used rufus

Glad everything worked out well for you. Rufus is a good bootable USB tool but my recommended solution was that you stop "writing" ISOs as you did Rufus when you start using Ventoy. You just copy and paste. It is a better solution in my view.

Pls I downloaded ubuntu 20.04 LTS and it was not in .Iso format instead it was in a hybrid iso when i tried to create a bootable usb, it booted from the usb but i couldn't use the try ubuntu, immediately i clicked it, it shut down. Now my question is how do i burn it to a cd do i leave it in the hybrid iso or convert to .iso and how do i use the try ubuntu?

I will suggest you download the iso file and then use Ventoy tool (ventoy.net/en/index.html) on your USB where you dont need to "burn" the iso file. Just copy and paste the iso in a "Ventoyed" USB and you can boot the USB and load as many .iso files on that USB. Try Ventoy out and thank me later.

I need first hand views on running guest OSes in Virtual Box

Is this a feasible idea these days?

Last i tried Virtualbox a few years ago, the performance was too poor, especially graphics wise. couldn't run any sort of games in a VM for instance, no matter how much resources was available to the VM

The stories of VM performance been too slow is outdated in my view. It all depends on the host machine running the VM. Today's laptops with good specs ie 16GB & above and an i7 or even i5 processor will run a VM well. Of cos nothings beats running the OS directly on the machine but trust me there are so many systems today running VMs than ever before. Just give it ago, that is why it is a VM smiley

PS: As I type I am running several virtual machines in this OS/VM; https://www.proxmox.com/en/. It is basically an OS that manages all your virtual machines and can run headless.
