CultureRe: Nairaland Official Igbo, Hausa and Yoruba Dictionary by gbking(m): 10:48pm On Dec 24, 2010
Thank you smiley
How come throughout the website people use a variety of different spellings for the same word? Is it because the language is mostly spoken so a correct spelling is only known by few or is it just slang?

For example you said what are you doing is "Ki l’o n se" however another person said "ki lon she" practically the same but spelt differently.
CultureRe: Esusu by gbking(m): 2:20am On Dec 24, 2010
An esusu is a Yoruba word and it's a traditional African lending association common in West Africa (Where, of course, Nigeria is). Each month members meet to contribute money to a pool. At the meeting, the entire sum is given to a member in good standing. In Jamaica, the rotating credit system is known as “partners”,

Basically it's the exact same thing.

CultureRe: I Have A Question For You All. by gbking(m): 10:50pm On Dec 23, 2010
I don't live in America, I'm British but say if I saw another black man I would say like check that black man. I think we subconsciously do it to cut down the people who it could be and maybe get the other person to say "who?" less times. I dunno, we just do it. Blacks, whites, we all say the black man, the white man, what ever.
CultureRe: Yoruba by gbking(op): 10:41pm On Dec 23, 2010
Idowuogbo:
black goat
there's a specie called obuku, they smell alot, they ooze out a smell to lure their female goat
That's nasty!

Idowuogbo:
emmh king u mite wanna learn dis
ikeji aja ni tayo
tayo is second to bin called a Dog  tongue cheesy cool
So ikeji aja is dog in Yoruba?
CultureRe: Yoruba by gbking(op): 10:31pm On Dec 23, 2010
I get the insult comes first bit.

Baba were ni gbking (gbking don dey madt)

instead of saying madt is gbking

I just don't get what the bit in bold means, teach me?
CultureRe: Yoruba by gbking(op): 10:18pm On Dec 23, 2010
So in Yoruba you would say:

Eranko buburu ni tayo_ast
(Wild animal is tayo_ast)

instead of

tayo_ast is a wild animal?
CultureRe: Yoruba by gbking(op): 10:13pm On Dec 23, 2010
grin haha okay

Whats an obuko dudu?
CultureRe: Yoruba by gbking(op): 10:03pm On Dec 23, 2010
@tayo_ast Whats touche Yoruba? I think I get what you mean though.

@D-sense Oseun, but,
Both you and Idowuogbo have said goat as an insult, why is this?
CultureRe: Yoruba by gbking(op): 9:53pm On Dec 23, 2010
Hit me with insults and I'll learn them.
Oseun everybody by the way.

I have a question though. Is Yoruba grammar the same as English? Do you put things in the same order?
Also, I've looked through some posts and people are speaking fluent Yoruba and then have a random English word in there. Why is this??
CultureRe: Yoruba by gbking(op): 9:42pm On Dec 23, 2010
Yeah man, insults are needed too.
When the uncles are out of line wink
CultureRe: Yoruba by gbking(op): 9:28pm On Dec 23, 2010
@Idowuogbo I will get my gran to help me with pronunciation when I see her.
I'm learning them you just taught me now.

@D-sense haha, joker.
CultureRe: Yoruba by gbking(op): 9:13pm On Dec 23, 2010
Yes they seem easy. Don't know if i'm pronouncing them right but I can type them for sure.
