Sex differences in heat loss responses are dependent on body size and not sex, meaning that larger individuals sweat more than smaller ones during cycle exercise in warm and tolerable conditions. That’s what research published today in Experimental Physiology shows. The body cools itself down in two main ways: sweating and increasing circulation to the skin’s surface. Body shape and size dictates which of these two is relied upon for heat loss. The study found that smaller males and females with more surface area per kilogram of body mass are more dependent on heat loss through increasing circulation and less dependent upon sweating. These findings by scientists from the University of Wollongong in Australia and Mie Prefectural College of Nursing in Japan call into question the conventional belief that women and men always respond differently to heat stress. The scientists looked at skin blood flow and sweating responses in 36 men and 24 women. They performed two trials (one of light exercise and the other of moderate) at 28 degrees Celsius and 36% humidity. These are conditions where the body is able to mitigate the additional heat produced during exercise and prevent further rises in body temperature by increasing sweating and blood flow to the skin. The same body temperature changes were observed in all participants within each trial regardless of sex. see more: http://www.womanlycare.com/sweats-men-women/ |
mofy1:just like WHO recommendation, the number of times you visit the doctor should be more in the 3rd trimester, guess that is why your doctor gave you that long appointment even after the appointment you will still be given one month before the next appointment at your third trimester appointments would be at 2weeks intervals then one week later on. so your 2 months appointment is still very much in line, if you experience any discomfort that is unbearable then visit your doctor at any time to complain. |
It is common to hear people talk about how to detect adulterated honey. This is simply because adulterated honey exists in the market. However, there are myths about how to detect adulteration and most dwell on some conventional physical features. There are also other myths about honey that has been generally accepted to be truth. Whether you are a big fan of honey or are just curious about it, the list below will help you understand some very important information about honey. Some of the myths and facts about honey just might end up surprising you! MYTH: Pure Honey is rarely available these days. FACT: Production of natural honey in Nigeria can be traced to some regions in the middle belt, south and northern part of the country. The demand of honey is greater than the supply, for this reason, there is a lot of adulterated honey on the shelves of supermarkets or in the custody of local vendors in Nigeria. Some honey vendors use sugar or glucose syrup to make honey look alike deceiving the unsuspecting consumers. However, the fact remains that unadulterated honey is also in abundance in Nigeria, thanks to the states like Taraba, Enugu, Kogi Kaduna, Cross river, Oyo, Edo that produce honey. MYTH: Honey can easily be tested for its purity by conventional methods like Some people say that you can test for pure honey by applying any of the conventional methods such as: When pure honey is dropped in a glass of water, it doesn’t dissolve; Dog will not eat bread that is laced with pure honey; Cotton wet in honey will burn when lit if it’s a pure honey; Ants will not go near pure honey; If applied on the eye, the burn will be more if honey is pure. FACT: These tests only analyze the physical attribute of honey. The invert sugar honey (fake honey) also passes most of these tests as its physical nature is similar to that of pure honey. Honey can only be tested for its purity by laboratory analysis. MYTH: Pure honey does not Crystalize (SOLIDIFY), if honey turns to solid then it is impure. FACT: Many varieties of honey crystallize or turn into a solid state within few months of their extraction. Crystallization can’t be stopped no matter how much processing and filtering that is done, it can only be delayed. The rate of crystallization also depends on the environment. Honey crystallizes faster in a cold environment that is why you see in some labels – do not refrigerate. After crystallization, you can liquefy by keeping it in warm water or sunlight. Crystallization is nature’s way of preserving honey, it does not affect its taste, flavor or quality, and it can stay naturally preserved (crystallized) for years. MYTH: Light color honey is of better quality FACT: The Color of natural honey differs it ranges from light artery color to dark amber color, it all depends on the floral source and pollen content of honey. All kinds of honey Irrespective of the color has almost same nutritional and medicinal importance. MYTH: Thick consistency honey (honey which does not flow easily) is of better quality FACT: Honey contains moisture (water) level ranging from 18%- 25% according to time and season of harvesting. The less the moisture, the thicker will be the honey. The only difference between thin and thick honey is its moisture content, other nutritional content will be same. Moisture is a natural attribute in honey, the earlier the harvest the more the moisture content, nutritional content still remains same. MYTH: Honey will not spoil in any condition FACT: Honey will not spoil only if the harvest was done properly (moisture level should be less than 20%), handled and stored (only in glass or stainless steel container). Otherwise honey tends to ferment and produce acidic smell if not stored properly. Honey darkens as it stays longer. MYTH: Ants does not come near pure honey FACT: Honey is made up of natural sugars fructose and glucose and so is a natural sweetener. Ants are attracted to any sweet thing and so honey falls in the sweet category so naturally ants are attracted to honey. see more: http://www.womanlycare.com/the-7-most-annoying-myths-about-honey-ever/ |
morning sickness affects over half of all pregnant mothers. It is generally related to an increase in estrogen levels, low blood sugar counts, and a greater susceptibility to some smells. More often, morning sickness will be present in the early hours of the morning and will ease up somewhat as the day goes on. Morning sickness is also known as nausea gravidarum, nausea, vomiting of pregnancy (emesis gravidarum), or pregnancy sickness. At times, morning sickness can be mild. However, the pregnant mother may at other times feel so nauseous that she will vomit. Even though morning sickness can be extremely unpleasant, it is hardly ever severe enough to cause metabolic derangement. In most cases, morning sickness settles down by the end of the first trimester. Morning sickness is more likely to occur during the first three months of a pregnancy. Tips for reducing morning sickness symptoms Here are a few tips you can put into practice to minimize unpleasant morning sickness symptoms: 1) Get plenty of rest You must ensure you get a good night´s sleep – wear a sleep mask, or even dark glasses, to block out as much light as possible. You might also consider a maternity body pillow that will properly help you support your back and stomach. Sometimes taking naps during the day may help. Avoid moving around straight after eating. See Tips for Coping With Sleep Loss During Pregnancy 2) Get up slowly Don’t be in a hurry to get out of bed when you wake up. Take your time. 3) Avoid some types of foods Avoid fatty and/or spicy foods. Avoid caffeine as well. 4) Food portion sizes – have small ones. It is important to always have some kind of food in your stomach, as this will lower your chances of experiencing nausea – and if you do, most likely symptoms will be milder. If the stomach is empty, the acids have nothing to work on, except for the stomach lining, resulting in worsening nausea. Have some salty crackers, peanut butter snacks, or some other protein snack before you get out of bed in the morning. At breakfast, cold applesauce, pears, bananas or any citrus fruit will help you feel satisfied early. Baked potatoes, although, less tasty for many, are highly nutritious. The fruit’s potassium may help prevent morning sickness. At night, try eating something high in protein snack/meal before going to bed, as this will help regulate your blood-glucose levels. 5) Avoid computer monitor flicker The rapid, almost unnoticeable flickering of the computer monitor could cause morning sickness. If you are susceptible to morning sickness due to monitor flicker, try to avoid using a computer completely. If you must, you should adjust the screen by making the fonts bold and larger and changing the background to a soft tan or pink color – this will help reduce eye strain. 6) Be physically active Some mothers may find it hard to move around if they feel lousy. However, being physically active has been found to improve symptoms in many people. see full post: http://www.womanlycare.com/17-tips-minimize-morning-sickness |
In older women, it’s not the excess weight that’s deadly, but where those extra pounds collect that can shorten life, a new study reports. Among women, 70 to 79, being overweight or obese didn’t appear to cut years off life — unless the weight was centered around the waist. But being underweight also appeared to shorten life span, researchers found. “Abdominal fat is more deadly than carrying excess weight,” said lead researcher Zhao Chen. She’s chair of the University of Arizona’s department of epidemiology and biostatistics in the College of Public Health. While the study found that a large waist circumference is detrimental, Hispanic women were somewhat protected — they had lower mortality rates at any waist measurement or BMI level than white or black women. Chen added, “An older woman should be concerned when her body weight is below normal for her height, and less concerned when she is slightly heavier than normal.” The researchers found that the risk of mortality increased when waist circumference measured more than 31.5 inches (80 centimeters), and they classified anything above nearly 35 inches (88 centimeters) as an “extreme risk.” The study looked at weight by using body mass index (BMI) measurements. BMI is a rough estimate of a person’s body fat based on height and weight measurements. A BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 is considered normal weight. Below 18.5 is underweight, while 25 to 29.9 is considered overweight. Obesity is a BMI of 30 or more. But obesity can also be broken into three classes, as was done in this study. Class I or “slight” obesity is a BMI of 30 to 34.9. Class II is 35 to 39.9, and class III is a BMI of 40 or above. Although being overweight is often considered generally bad for your health, how bad may depend on your age, race and ethnic background, Chen said. “Some of these differences may be related to the fact that body weight does not capture mortality risk, as do measures such as waist circumference, which we find is consistently associated with higher mortality,” Chen said. In general, these findings suggest that being underweight is more detrimental in older women, and being slightly heavier in later life could be beneficial, she said. Body weight can reflect several different aspects of body composition, each reflecting health and disease in its own way, Chen said. “One’s weight should be interpreted with caution with respect to age, ethnicity, race and other measures of health, such as waist circumference,” she said. For the study, Chen and her colleagues reviewed data on nearly 162,000 women aged 50 to 79 who took part in the Woman’s Health Initiative, a major study on postmenopausal women by the U.S. National Institutes of Health. At the start of the study, the researchers measured the height, weight and waist size of all the participants and recorded other lifestyle data. During 11 years of follow-up, more than 18,000 women died. see full post: http://www.womanlycare.com/belly-fat-dangerous-older-women-overweight |
Even though you are very protective of your little one, there are times you make silly mistakes that may lead to a fall of your toddler. Infants are so vulnerable that it is your sole responsibility as a parent to protect and prevent falls for your little ones, Some Nigerian mothers may say “you have to fall to grow”. Does a child need to fall to grow? Barely. An infant does not need to fall off the bed or couch in order to grow. Growth and falls are independent variables, so an infant can grow out of infanthood with little or no falls and so it behooves on every mother to prevent her infant from falls, don’t just rely on good fortune to protect your little one. Here are five mistakes mothers with infants make that may lead to falling: Keeping baby at the edge of the bed: Most good moms make this mistake (me too, and I’ll definitely never to do that again). Mothers multitask a lot, there is always something running in our heads, we just want to complete all task in the shortest possible time and so while doing that, our infants may be caught in between. You quickly want to run to the kitchen and you totally forget your baby could roll over, then you put the baby at the edge of the bed to be back in a moment and then before you know it baby has landed on the floor. Falls from height could be very dangerous for infants, it could lead to head injuries and of course you wouldn’t want that for your baby. Safety Measures: When you want to quickly do stuff leaving your infant behind on the bed, please place the baby in the middle of the bed and border with pillows. You could even put a pillow on the floor so if baby eventually falls against all odds, the baby would have a soft landing. As a typical Nigerian mom, we put our babies behind our backs and support with a wrapper, you can do that, then you don’t have to worry, your baby goes with you everywhere you go, safe and sound. Leaving your infants all alone with older siblings: Especially when they are still young too, it’s really not advised to leave them without supervision. These older ones get so excited to have their little one with them but they usually overdo plays, they can actually push baby to fall, they can even hit the baby with a toy. They do it innocently, though. Safety Measures: Always supervise your infants play with their older siblings. Be handy to ward off stray toys that may harm your child see full post: http://www.womanlycare.com/five-mistakes-mothers-make-may-lead-to-infants-fall/ has your infant ever fallen? share your experience. |

At any one time in a woman’s life, she loses interest in sex, for some women low sexual desire is a serious problem and may have interfered with marital relationship. It could also be a medical condition known as Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder (HSDD). So many factors can interfere with a woman’s drive for sex, from an emotional state, physical state, lifestyle, past to present experience, etc. These can take a toll on a woman’s sexual drive. According to a review of current literature cited by the national center for Biotechnology Information US – The Global Study of Sexual Attitudes and Behaviors (GSSAB), which included 13,882 women aged 40 to 80 years, reported 26% to 48% of women had a lack of interest in sex, and 18% to 41% of women had difficulty reaching orgasm; these were the most common Female Sexual Dysfunctions (FSD) across world regions. Some women get over it after a while, why some may need a medical expert to advice appropriately. Here are some possible reasons for low sexual desire in women (low libido) Stress: Stress can affect sexual desire Work-related stress is something that can really take a toll on your libido. Therefore if the stress hormone cortisol is at elevated levels for a long time, it suppresses the sex hormones and that can lead to a decrease in sexual desire. Stress is a libido killer for women when you are so worn out, sex is usually far from your thought. Caring for younger kids: Caring for young kids can actually get mothers overwhelmed Mothers with young children (probably 0 – 5 years) have a great deal of thinking on how to survive the day from demands of their little ones. Pregnancy is a wonderful period in a woman’s life. However, it comes with a lot of discomfort one of which is the hip joint pain, and this occurs mostly in the second and third trimester. It may be a minor problem for some, for others, it may be so severe as to affect their activities of daily living. Changes within your body and the activities you perform daily contribute to your hip joint pain. Causes of hip joint pain in pregnancy Reasons for your hip pain: Relaxin: The major cause of your hip pain is the hormone relaxin. It has its good side, though, as it prepares your body for delivery by loosening your ligaments and making it flexible enough for the process of childbirth. However, the hormone puts your hip joint in a precarious situation that may cause joint pain. Other causes of hip joint pain are; Weight gain, sleeping mostly on your side (you can’t help that anyways), pressure your enlarging uterus puts on your sciatic nerve may also lead to pain. The hip pain may even deprive some women of a good night sleep. Practicing some type of exercises that targets to your back and hip muscles will help relieve joint pains, also adjusting some of your daily activities will also help reduce the symptoms. Below are effective ways to help relieve hip joint pain: Reduce standing and walking long distance: When you stand you put so much pressure on your hip joint thereby causing pain, so I’ll advise you reduce the length of time you stand. Though walking may be the best form of exercise for pregnant women, walking long distance will increase your hip joint pain as there is pressure on the hip joint while walking. Water workout (swimming): This is another form of exercise a pregnant woman with hip joint pain can engage in. It takes the weight off your joints while working on your whole body. It’s a better option to walking. Bridging exercises: Bridge strengthens your glute, core muscles and hip and thigh muscles, thereby reducing your joint pains. see how to perform bridge exercises-http://www.womanlycare.com/4-most-effective-ways-to-relieve-hip-joint-pain-during-pregnancy/ |

I know that a lot of women both married and unmarried can relate with the tying of wrapper in this part of the world (Nigeria). It’s our culture as African women to tie wrapper, even the men do. For instance, in the southern part of Nigeria, men tie wrapper even though it’s some sort of a general belief that tying of wrapper is for the female folk. In the 70s and 80s, women long to get to the age of tying wrapper(I mean, grown enough for it to fit). Women from the northern part start tying wrapper as early as their childhood. Women of marriageable age pray to ‘have a body that would fit tying wrapper, meaning that women would prefer to be chubby than being slim because it’s a visible fact that tying wrapper fits the former better. During marriage ceremonies, a man is known to be able to take care of his wife by the number of wrappers he buys her as tradition requires. The woman on her part immediately starts wearing these wrappers to show how well her husband is taking care of her. In fact, the type of wrappers you wear or have in your box shows how wealthy your husband is or how successful you are if single. If you tie your wrapper at home or to go buy stuff around your neighbourhood, to church or social gatherings it didn’t matter back then, in fact, it showed how homely and responsible you were. Well, that was in those days when Nigerians held onto their culture and were proud of every bit of it. Down to this present day, things have changed we have mixed up with other cultures to the extent that it has rubbed off on our traditions. We have embraced other cultures and now see ours as awkward or old fashioned. Men see ‘wrapper tying women’ as village women’, or women with no ambition and unattractive. To some, the sight of wrapper even irritates them – a thing to be worn by only illiterates. The most disheartening part of this is that even some of our female folks feel just the same way. When did it all go wrong? Was it when we embraced the western culture? However, accepting other people’s culture does not mean we should relegate ours to the background. It will be shocking to discover that young girls and women don’t even know how to tie wrapper. It may seem unbelievable but it’s so true, as our older mothers are now seeing wrapper tying as archaic. Our young mothers don’t even wear wrappers, and our young girls can’t even relate with tying wrapper – they don’t even know what you are talking about. Our newlyweds tie the wrapper only on their traditional marriage ceremonies and after which they never wear it, the wrappers given during marriage remain in their boxes for a very long time and most are not even worn until death takes away their owner and someone else inherits it. Wrappers can still look attractive at home or outside. Let us bring back our heritage, let us teach our daughters how to tie wrappers, let us look sexy in wrappers at home for our husbands, after all, what other sexy would be more than the fact that he can easily take off the wrapper and discover that there are no undies underneath the wrapper (in fact he will insist you only tie wrapper in bed ), our men should love us with our wrappers. As women, our underneath needs to breathe at night and not tied up with bump shorts, therefore tying wrapper makes this easier. Where else can we be free to tie wrapper the way we want if not in our homes? Tying wrapper to social events gives us that self-esteem and pride as mothers and wives. Tying wrapper to events as a young girl makes you look decent, ready for marriage and showcases your African culture. Having said all these, our culture and traditions are unique to us and makes us stand out from the crowd. Our African fabrics are not for our boxes or for western styles, they are for us and by us and should be worn our own style. The wrapper tying culture should not be frowned at whether at home or outside the home, it is our heritage and so should be held in high esteem. I am a Mother, a wife, literate and an African Woman. I tie a wrapper at home and outside the home. TIE A WRAPPER TODAY See more-http://www.womanlycare.com/wrapper-tyingour-african-heritage/ |
The doctor telling you, you have cancer feels like a death sentence being read to some women. Just being a woman is the highest risk factor for breast cancer. Breast cancer affects more women than other types of cancer. As reported by Medical News Today “Breast cancer is the most common invasive cancer in females worldwide”. It accounts for 16% of all female cancers and 22.9% of invasive cancers in women. 18.2% of all cancer deaths worldwide, including both males and females, are from breast cancer. Making it a habit of looking and feeling your breast every day in order to know its normal state is very important. “One or two in every 25 Nigerian women are at risk of breast cancer, but higher risks exist for women who are older than 45, older than 30 at birth of their first child, and women with family history, ” says Dr Olaleye of Optimal Cancer Care Foundation. What is breast cancer? Breast cancer is simply an uncontrollable growth of cells of the breast. Cancers are malignant tumors; a tumor is a swelling or mass resulting from an abnormal growth of cells. A malignant tumor (cancer) tend to grow uncontrollably affecting surrounding tissues or even spreading to other parts of the body causing damage that may be life-threatening. Risk factors: Research has not proven what exactly causes breast cancer but there are risk factors that may lead to developing breast cancer: Being a woman: This is the number one risk factor, women suffer breast cancer more than the male counterpart, reason being the fact that the female hormones promote cancer cell growth. A study published on Pubmed Central-Hormone Action in the Mammary Gland (2010)reports that the female reproductive hormones, estrogens, progesterone, and prolactin, have a major impact on breast cancer and control postnatal mammary gland development. Family history and genetics: It may be carried by your genes. If you also have a close relative or sister that had suffered breast cancer, you have a higher risk of developing the disease. The most common cause of hereditary breast cancer is an inherited mutation in theBRCA1 and BRCA2 In normal cells, these genes help prevent cancer by making proteins that help keep the cells from growing abnormally. Mutated versions of these genes cannot stop abnormal growth, and that can lead to cancer says cancer.org. Studies have shown that identical twins who inherited the genes can develop the same type of cancer at the same period of life. Older Women: As you get older your risk increases, especially for women over 50 (doesn’t mean women younger cannot develop cancerous cells). In post-menopausal women, any discharge from the breast is considered a very serious issue and should be promptly reported. Having a Previous History of Cancer: A woman who has had a previous breast cancer battle is more likely to develop the condition again in the other breast or in another path of the same breast. Menstrual History: Onset of periods before age 12 and late menopause beyond 60, leads to much exposure to the female hormones estrogen which is friendly to cancer cells. Such women have a greater chance of developing breast cancer later in life. Obesity: Obese or overweight women have a higher risk of developing breast cancer. According to breastcancer.org, the higher risk is because fat cells make estrogen; extra fat cells mean more estrogen in the body and estrogen can make hormone-receptor-positive breast cancers develop and grow. Certain Breast Lump: Having had a breast lump that is not cancerous previously in life may increase your risk of breast cancer in later life. Women with dense (thick and tough) breast have a higher risk of developing breast cancer says, researchers. Women who have not been pregnant in their lifetime have a higher risk of developing breast cancer. The breast gets to its full maturity at your first full term pregnancy, before full term pregnancy your breast is still immature and so liable to hormonal influence that may lead to breast cancer. Alcohol Consumption: studies have found the consumption of alcohol to increase the risk of cancer. As reported by National Cancer Institute, a study carried out revealed the risk of breast cancer was higher among all levels of alcohol intake: for every 10 grams of alcohol consumed per day (slightly less than one drink) researchers observed a small increase (7 percent) in the risk of breast cancer Symptoms of Breast Cancer According to American Cancer Society, the most common symptom of breast cancer is a new lump or mass. A painless, hard mass that has irregular edges is more likely to be cancer, but breast cancers can be tender, soft, or rounded. They can even be painful. For this reason, it is important to have any new breast mass or lump or breast change checked by a health care provider experienced in diagnosing breast diseases. Other possible symptoms of breast cancer include: Swelling of all or part of a breast (even if no distinct lump is felt) Skin irritation or dimpling Breast or nipple pain Nipple retraction (turning inward) Redness, scaliness, or thickening of the nipple or breast skin Nipple discharge (other than breast milk) Are you a breast cancer survivor?
