dasparrow: Let me explain NYSC a little further. NYSC is mandatory for any Nigerian looking to obtain a decent job in Nigeria either now or in the near future. It is a 1 year voluntary service to one's father land and once you're done, you're given a discharge certificate. A little about my background: I was born in western Europe and I attended university in the United States. I never attended university in Nigeria and only spent 11 years of my entire life in Nigeria. I was not summoned to partake in the NYSC scheme. I voluntarily chose to take part in it after my family convinced me to. With the way the world is going, no one knows which country one might end up in tomorrow especially since the economic recession hit the western economies. In the event that I find myself back in Nigeria attempting to secure employment there, I won't have to worry about any stumbling blocks because I have met all the requirements for potential employment.

My family members studied in the United States only from undergrad to grad school. They were all working in the states in the private and then later public sector and their job positions from what they are telling me required no professional exams since they are not into accounting or computer technology. They hold Masters degrees and have years of working experience from the United states. They brought their families back to Nigeria with them but don't like it in Nigeria and hence are willing to try other African countries.

The truth of the matter is, not having an NYSC certificate while living in Nigeria is like someone not having work permit papers in western nations. One will not get anywhere. Both government and private organizations ask for the NYSC discharge certificate. I was told that even when one wants to work in the west African region, one will be asked for the NYSC discharge certificate if the potential employer finds out one is a Nigerian. Also, NYSC does not go by what age one currently is but rather what age one was at the time one graduated from college/university with the bachelors degree. So, someone who graduated with a bachelors degree at 25 and is now 31 will not be exempted from NYSC.

My family members have graduate degrees in public administration. They have worked in the private sector and in the government sector (university) performing advanced administrative duties, not secretarial duties. However, it was overseas not in Nigeria. They have not worked with a MNC before. They moved back to Nigeria a few years ago but don't like it and prefer to live and raise their families in a more organized African country. They have the option of going back to their base abroad (US) but they want the kids to have some African upbringing.

Nigeria has changed oh! I got back to Nigeria (temporarily) a couple of months ago after many years away in the States. My mission was to get NYSC out of the way while I am still young. Nowadays, the average Nigerian is intimidated by Nigerians returning from the diaspora. They think we are here to snatch away their jobs. Many are green with envy and equally smile in one's face while resenting one and plotting on how to get one fired/sacked.

The average Nigerian is now very hostile and resentful always exhibiting unnecessary aggression in their character towards others who are different from them be it culturally or religious wise. It must be years of pent up frustration living in a country that still leaves most of its citizens without constant electricity. The constant tribalism and crass gender discrimination is also an issue I worry about becuase I will not want to raise female children in a country where misogyny and tribalism along with severe religious intolerance reigns supreme. I know I can never live in Nigeria again based on what I have experienced so far that's for sure so after service year, I am out.

On a side note Geminilove, I have one or two family members who are thinking of residing in other African countries. Which African countries in your opinion have hospitable citizens as well as employment opportunities and how can my family members apply for job openings in these countries please? Thanks.

dasparrow, this only two and half years ago I was in Lagos doing this project. A lot of the people were Nigerians born in diaspora returning home and the children of the higher society types. Why do you need to do NYSC, if you don’t plan living in the country, please enlighten me. My cousin who was born in Nigeria but moved to UK aged 10, got a job in oil industry and decided to move back aged 31 and there was all this drama she had to do NYSC even though she employed as expat. The company couldn’t pay her and she had to seek off somewhere every Wednesday. What is the deal with this service issue?? Nigeria is your fatherland doesn’t say you can’t live there again. Inregards, to where you family can relocate to what industry are they in? Do they have a degree? Any work experience with a MNC?

dasparrow: Very well said. If I am going to live in any country of the world, I must do my homework on the citizens of that country. I have been fortunate to live in various countries and have discovered that racism and intense ethnocentrism remains a big problem within the human race. The people of a country can ruin one's whole experience irrespective of how advanced, developed, economically flamboyant and organized the country might be and I am talking from personal experience.

Let take Ghana for insists I knew a lot of Ghanaians, I had been on holiday to Ghana few times. Accra round the corner from Lagos. I thought I will in Lagos every other weekend. Therefore, when the job came knocking I was in cold Europe and hot sunshine was calling me. It was good contract with extra attractive benefits. All research couldn’t have helped me because the money was so good. I will not make that mistake again. Going on holiday to a country and living there two different things as well.

So true, I have worked in Ghana I was shocked how they smiled in my face and where like madam, let me get this and that for you but they were plotting my downfall. As for South Africa, I will not get into xenophobia issues I had to deal with there. Police report or character report is a document showing you are not convicted or convected of any offense in Nigeria. In other words, you can call it criminal or offense report if you had done any.
