Chreze:
That line is IRRELEVANT. I don’t think one should throw away their custom/tradition simply because they live or are based abroad. And I am saying this if it’s his tradition.

@Osoderi
Your situation is a valid reason to get some days off from work. And I am not talking about traveling as it’s a very good reason to take a week leave to attend to family situation. People here (I mean the UK people or whites as we call them) won’t think for 2 seconds to call their manager to get some days off to deal with “family emergency” as they like to call it (even if they joined the job a month ago). There are so many areas in your offer letter or contract that talks about calling or speaking to your manager about situations like this (not clearly stated as this, but this falls under emergencies). If I were in your position I would be more concerned as to why I think my manager won’t approve something like this. So speak to your manager, you have every right to take some days off to mourn your Father-In-law. People here will take some days off to mourn their pet or great grand parents, quoting that the person or pet was their source of joy during a trying time in their life ( and I consider that’s to be a very valid reason). How you present your “Second Father’s” passing to your manager may influence his/her decision and I just gave you a hint.

Not something I normally like to comment on but I just can’t ignore for some reasons. If your reason for not attending your “Second Father’s” burial is work based and not family (kids n their needs ), then I think you should do some more thinking. your spouse should not have to start quoting traditions and rules for you to want to attend his father, your father-in-laws burial. I understand that work and finance is very important in our daily existence, but we also need our spouse n family to be happy so that they can celebrate with us when we get those big offers and promotions. Your family should always come first, and if your present manager thinks otherwise (which I doubt), then your main concern right now should be getting a new job with a reasonable manager before January. People here don’t play with valid reasons like this.

Apologies if you feel judged in anyway, but I wrote based on “how I” read your post. Unfortunately, we can only reply by what we read, without knowing the person. Blessings
It really does depend on the company. If you work for a private company you are not going to get too much lax treatment because of a bereavement especially if you have just started.

You are also not going to get paid leave off when you haven’t earned it. And neither will they feel the need to give you non-paid leave since you mentioned you are still in your probation period.

I would suggest reading up in your company’s policy to see how they operate on such matters. Never assume it is your right to take time off for a bereavement just because you have signed an employment contract.

If the company does operate such bereavement policy, then in most cases you would only get a day off to attend the funeral and we know a day is not enough to travel to Nigeria.

I’ll like recommendations on where to buy cheap but durable electric blanket, hot water bottles and winter outfits for men.
Wilko do cheap hot water bottles and blankets

Pound shops are also worth a try

Can also try ebay UK

Cheap Winter clothing..try Primark for Second hand clothes store.

Amazon UK is good but if you find anything on there, try and do a comparison with ebay UK because most times Amazon is more expensive.

Hi, i just got a job too as a data analyst in NHS.
Are you taking the offer and is it an entry level band?
Mine also comes with sponsorship.
Geebee5:
Congratulations!!! This made me smile.
Yes, will take the offer and it is a band 5 role. The rate at which private companies are laying off peeps is scary hence my decision.

Let's chat if you do not mind. I'll initiate it so kindly check you mail.
If you are just looking for a steady job to relax with a stable income but with little to no Job progression, the NHS is good.

However, my advise would be to just to use such jobs to wet your feet in the UK corporate world. Understand the technology and how it is applied to different sectors, take advantage of any free training available and use the NHS to pay for your professional certifications which will stand out on your CV. Then bounce after 3 years to go IT Contracting..up £500+ per day or apply for investment banking jobs with call for Data Architects, Data Analysts, Data Management, where you can earn around £100k+ base salary easily.

I posted a link to a UK Govt sponsored free skills bootcamp further. The requirements appear to be that one must have the legal right to work in the UK which I assume most in this thread do. If anyone has the brain power to take advantage of these boot camps then please do as they would be highly beneficial and put you in good standing when it comes to applying for Tech roles which pay very well when compared to others.

Just curious; do UK companies pay 13th month/end of the year bonus?

grin
Some companies do.
I know some who work in big investment banks in Canary Wharf & in the City of London who get extremely healthy bonuses. Think 10% of your yearly salary in one go every year + other incentives.

Some Public sector companies such as TfL also pay 13 times a year and bonuses are part of their contracts.

https://tfl.taleo.net/careersection/external/jobdetail.ftl?job=040582&tz=GMT%2B00%3A00&tzname=Europe%2FLondon
^^ This TfL job is offering UK sponsorship so if anyone has the skills required please go for it. You get free London travel with TfL for yourself and partner. Your dependents under 24 in full time education also get 75% of travel across London , Pension contribution and other good benefits including 6 weeks paid holiday....enough for you to go and do detty december in Naija, come back to relax small before resuming work grin.

They also pay 13 times a year and give staff bonuses but not as healthy as those in investment banking but still something.

It's almost like the UK born black ppl are disappearing or being bred out and being replace by immigrants. Immigration is the highest its ever been in the UK.

Import the 3rd world become the 3rd word.

Only the rich and middle class Nigerians can enjoy Nigeria.

The poor desperate Nigerians are the ones saying japa

Why would a rich person leave Nigeria when he can afford to live with dignity.

If you are rich in Nigeria, why would you go and hustle to live in the West?
The thing is if a Nigerian travels to the UK and stays in communities with a high influx of Nigerians, you begin to think that that is all there is to it. But you are mistaken.

Then 2021 census states that 14.% of the UK population is foreign born..around 9.5 million out of 70mill and this figure includes other races and not just black or Asian as many are born in Europe.

In total the number of Black people in the UK is still under 3% (Africans & Caribbeans both foreign and UK born ) so don't don't be fooled into thinking Nigerians or even Black people are majority because of the area you live in as that will never be allowed to be the case.

Hello everyone,

I need insights from the experienced peeps on this forum.
I got a job offer from NHS to work as a Data Analyst accompanied with Tier2 /sponsorship visa. I currently work as an IT service desk technician in a private company and I must say, it’s wonderful working here (my current company). My boss put in a word for me and the company is ready to sponsor me so they intend to put in an application to the home office to be a sponsorship licensed employer so I can be sponsored. Also, I’ll move to another department to work as a Data Analyst. I really have no Idea how the NHS works but would like to hear from experienced folks. If you were in my shoes, what will you do? Thanks
Stay with the Private company. Too much politics with NHS and the powers that be there may be racist.

ELff:
Please I have a situation... sorry this is a bit lengthy

I bought a car from a friend, he charged me the cost of the road tax included in the total cost of the car, whereas he stopped paying after I picked up the car. Recently, I decided to sell the car as cost of maintenance was getting too high, I have only driven the car for about three months, all this time I kept asking for the V5 and he kept saying he couldn't find it, like he has misplaced it.

Last month I insisted that I needed the V5 as I want to put the car out for sale, and he said he would fill a V6 form and I will get the V5 it in my post within 6 weeks.

Last week, I got back home after work and couldn't find the car so I panicked and called the police thinking it's been stolen, but I was told DVla came to clamp and impound it. I called DVLa explaining that I didn't have the Log book and that it was only recently that the registered keeper was transferred to my name, that I don't even drive the car either as I had bought another car. And the guy explained that it's my responsibility to tax the vehicle but it isn't dvla who clamped it, that it's a tax enforcement agency, so he gave me their number to call.

I called the tax enforcement agency explaining my situation, they said I have to pay £539 pounds and every day it stays with them is an extra £22, and I should also know that there are no guarantees that the car will not be scrapped by Friday this week.

I'm at a loss at what to do because honestly, there was no way I would have Taxed the car without the v5 reference number, moreso, because my friend charged me for the road tax while I was paying for it as he said he wil keep up with the payment, I didn't bother to check if he was paying or not. When I asked him why he stopped paying for the tax, he said because he transferred the registered keeper to my name, and I said it's only recently you did that, he said it didn't matter, as long as it's not Taxed and its parked on govt road as my house doesn'thave a private garage, dvla has the right to clamp it.

Please I need advise on what to do, I don't have that money to give ro those people neither do I want to loose the car.
You are still referring to this person as your friend? He clearly ripped you off.

Tell him to at least refund you the money for the tax.

Are you slow or what?

You are quoting Jessica Tata did you even read tte facts of the case, she took 16 children into her home daycare and left them unattended while also forgetting a pan of oil she had on a fire and left the home to go to a local target store.

She is liable for manslaughter and wrongful death. The case here is that a child went missing and fell into a pool, this is an incident that happens to many households yearly and one of the reasons I hate private pools. There are just some things that should not be in a house where children live and a pool is one of those
No, the case here is that Ifeanyi's Nanny while on duty, just like Jessice Tata, left her ward unattended and this resulted in the death of child/children.
Again as I said stop defending nonsense. The Nanny is culpable not keeping her eyes on the child she was paid to look after. Just like Jessica Tata and other negligent Nannies I hope she gets a well deserved sentence. May Baby Ifeanyi RIP

Other cases where Nannies were found guilty of not doing their job, where the child died.

Since you love speaking from an American perspective, here is how the law would be applied if Ifeanyi had died in America while under the care of a Nanny.

https://klgflorida.com/babysitters-and-negligence-cases-what-to-know/
Negligence in Failure of Supervision
Failure to properly supervise is one of the most common cause of negligence. Inadequate supervision can result in tragic accidents, such as drowning, drinking poisonous household products, starting a fire, electrocution, falling and other injuries. Negligence also includes leaving a child unattended in a hot car. It is the babysitter’s duty to keep their eye on the child at all times, and a babysitter can be found negligent if injury or death occurs from failing to properly supervise those under their care.

"Negligence in Dangerous Situations
Child care near potentially dangerous environments, such as a pool or ocean, have stricter supervision requirements. A babysitter may also be responsible for a child’s injuries sustained during a car accident if it was the caretaker’s fault, and parents can sometimes sue for further damages."

https://greenbergandstein.com/babysitter-lawsuits-negligence-and-child-endangerment/

"Recently, a babysitter liability case made headlines after a 19-year-old sitter in Orange County kept a gun out at the house where she was watching a five-year-old boy. The teen claims that she had a gun on the table because she was scared about the possibility of a robbery or attacker. Yet she made a grave mistake when she left the gun on the coffee table and chose to take a nap, allowing the five-year-old to wander around the house unsupervised. The child picked up the gun and accidentally set it off. This mistake cost the little boy his life.

The babysitter is now being charged with a state felony for abandoning and endangering the child. Babysitters can also be held liable if a child dies or suffers injury in a drowning incident because the caretaker failed to monitor the child closely, or if the child suffers a variety of other accidents that could have been prevented with adequate supervision."

Ok. You are completely ignorant about labor laws. Educate yourself because I am wasting my time here. Try this nonsense in countries that work and see yourself 10yrs in prison. Go and ask Nigerians who are serving prison time abroad or been deported for Slavery. They also had your type of thinking. Lol.
You are the one who is ignorant As you don’t seem to comprehend that ‘slavery’ means working for free.

I am sure Jessica Tata, a Nigerian Nanny who is currently serving 80 years in an American Prison for 4 children who died in her home shared the same mindset as you. Read up on her.

Nannies are not required to work more than a regular day’s shift. It’s a job and they are her employer. She is bound by state laws just like any regular employee and should be in her house after 8hrs. If they need 24hr care, they need to hire multiple Nannies. She needs to get a labor and human right lawyer to fight for herself. Let’s see what the law will say! The law is not emotional dear! From what we know, she did not sell herself into slavery and in Nigeria slavery is illegal. what was required of her is Slavery!
Where does it state that Nannies are not allowed to work more than a regular day's shift?

What constitutes a 'shift'? is it 8 hours or 2 during the day or night?

How do you know that she wasn't a live-in Nanny?

Do you know the terms and conditions of the Nanny's employment because you are making a load of baseless assumptions?

No there is no law that states that one must have multiple Nannies for one child..you are just making shit up now

This Nanny don kill person pickin finish and she now wants to claim human and labou rights...we shall see now.

Nanny like all regular people need a break! Because you employ people does not mean they are your slaves! Normal employment laws require she gets breaks! If she gets a good lawyer, she can sue them for slavery! People who need full time care for their child will normally hire 2 Nannie’s! So when one is tired, the other can rest! Why should someone dedicate every moment of their life to YOUR child when you can’t stand to be with YOUR own child 24/7.

She’s not a robot, until you find a robot she’s a human and entitled to fatigue as well. Besides kids have had fatal accidents right in front of the parents! Such a child with special needs, usually needs multiple people to care for them. They are a handful.

Meghan’s mother is fully involved in her grandkids lives! Even Harry and Meghan will never leave their little kids completely in the hands of strangers and such people have nothing less than 4 Nannie’s 24/7 in 8hr shifts. 2 Nannie’s per child. There is a reason why only the very rich can afford good Nannie’s. They use multiple when the kids are little because kids are always so active and up to something mischevious!
Absolute BS. If a Nanny is on duty and getting paid then she should pay attention to the job at hand. They no send her to apply for the job.
In this case, the Nanny had a 3 year old child who she was assigned to provide care to and to make sure he came to no harm. Instead she recklessly releieved herself of the duty she was being paid for and went to answer a call for 20 mins. That is negligence at its finest.

Slavery you say? Unless the Nanny was not being paid then how can she claim Slavery? No be she apply for the job and was collecting Salary? Nigerians! See entitlement.

Meghan's mother does not look after her kids. She has a Nanny. Nanny's are professionally regulated, referenced and vetted in other parts of the world and they get paid very hefty salaries up to around $200k plus free accomodation, food and travel.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-9295685/Nannies-rich-famous-reveal-luxurious-perks-job.html

They even have colleges for Nannies. No be anyhow job.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=agLUDl4YpQg

CelebritiesRe: Kemi Olunloyo Calls Out Police Over 'Inhumane Torture Of Ifeanyi's Nanny' by Gemma11:

Honestly, Nanny is a temporary resource. Max a few hours. No one leaves a child they claim to care for with a Nanny for days and run around going to party. Both parents! That’s not her child, she’s human she also needs breaks and supervision. Plus people are saying that boy may have been autistic. That is a lot of your responsibility to put on someone else for days!
Fancy applying to do a job and then complaining? The woman signed up to be a Nanny and the typical duties of a nanny is to provide 1-2-1 24 hour care of a child in their care. What do you mean it is not her child?
That is just like a bus driver given an assignment to drive a bus across the country and then complaining that he is tired and that it is not his bus so why should he kill himself.
Or you hire a chef and they complain that they are too tired to cook, plus it is not their food so why should they stress themselves
Or you hire gateman to watch your property overnight but the stress is too much for him so sleeps on the job because no be im house sef abi?

Prince Harry & Meghan travel often without their children who are left with Nanny's. Nothing dey there. Do you think if anything happened to Prince Harry's child while in the care of the Nanny while he and his wife were away, people would be making excuses for her?

No stranger is going to do that for you.
If you have a close relative who drives, you could ask them to add you to theirs but they may be reluctant.

My only advice is to check for the minimum level of cover that the law allows which is 3rd party, fire and theft which is most times cheaper. However that covers damage to another person’s car, along with compensation costs for injuries to other people.  Your vehicle will not be covered at all.

It makes no sense that maid who has been watching the kid with no Issues for 3+ years would suddenly forget the kid. Unless she and the cook were having an affair. Still the nanny would be smart enough to hand the kid over to any of the other 6 people.
Nanny may be negligent and fired but whoever built the swimming pool and not fence it knowing a kid is around is also culpable. It also sounds from earlier reports that it was a full house.
Why you cutting up a young child... Bury him .
Nanny fired with no reference let her contemplate and change careers.
I believe a full autopsy is warranted to understand how the child died. I sincerely believe that someone hurt that child and put him in the pool to make it seem like an accident.

A 3 year old child is just not going to get up in the middle of the night to go for swim without an adult. 3 year old's get sense pass that one. Unlike Dbanj's son who had just turned 1, the mind of. 3 Year old is more developed and would somehow sense that getting into the pool at night was a big no no without an adult around.

And so in that respect, full autopsy is warranted because those that hurt that child can not be allowed to get away with their evil deed.

That's it in a nutshell.

The Nanny is negligent and should be held 100% accountable as it was her sole responsibilty as stated in her job description as the "Nanny" to provide 1-2-1 24 hour care to the child. rule no.1 should have been not to let the child out of her sight for even a second.

Thank you for your reply.

Got the CC off links here and phone contract is now about 4 months, payment has never been missed on the CCs as direct debit has been set

Just have some questions from what you have written. If over 30, how many years mortage do you get then?

LISA was discussed by , I think Ticha, some time ago but I have not put much thought into it as I do not even have a deposit yet, can it be started without being ready to buy a house?

Also, for a first time buyer, is it advisable to buy cheap, maybe a 1 bd or 2bd and then build from there? Or just go all out for a 3bdr and then buy other cheap ones when you can re-mortgage in the future?

For paying more than the monthly mortgage, I thought if you pay your mortgage off before time, it will lead to a penalty or your advice is to pay more than the set amount a couple of times in a year?
Always best to do your research but from my experience, once over 30, Lenders/brokers start looking at retirement age and ask when you will be able to pay off the balance. This is for residential properties. Most retire at 65..used to be enforced but not anymore so you could convince them that you will retire at 70 (doesn't have to be your intent and it not law breaking). Also if you have a work pension, you can tell lenders how much it is worth and convince them that you will use that to clear your balance when you retire..again doesn't have to be true. The goal is to just get your leg on the property ladder and hustle your way up from there.

For Buy to Let Properties, Lenders require 25% and you could possibly take out the longest term mortgage which is 40 years regardless of your age if you can show proof that the rental income will more than cover your payments.

Another tip, if looking to acquire more than 3 rental properties, try to buy them with a ltd company you can create, that way HMRC won't hit you so much where it hurts when it comes to tax assessment time.

re: buying 1-2 bed. It is really to what you want to achieve. If I were single, I would buy a property with more than one room as I could want rent one out.

LISA is for 18-39 years olds.
If you & partner can save £4k per year(£83 per week) each for 3 years you could receive around £6k free from the Government over the course of that time. So in 3 years you both would have a combined £30k for a deposit. This is is a 25% increase on your money which you won't get if the money is just sitting in an ordinary bank account. This deposit can only be used for residential properties though but as I said you can still rent out a room.

When I was small I remember some strange people living in our upstairs rooms. It was only when I got older that I realised that my Dad had rented out two rooms to help him cover the mortage payments.

With most mortgages you can overpay up to 10% each year without penalty. So if your mortgage is around £200k and overpaying is not going to amount to be over £20k per year (£1666 extra per month) you'll be within your mortgage agreement.

Also never pay for a broker as there are very free ones around like "L&C Mortgages" who are paid by the Lenders to find customers or you could just approach a bank directly.
