Two Nigerians have been shot dead in the Western Cape province of South Africa. Mike Ibitoye, Chairman of the Nigeria Union in South Africa, disclosed this to News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) via telephone from Cape Town.


He said the deceased were shot by yet-to-be-identified assailants.

“Mr. Ernest Ughakwesili, 42, native of Nkpor, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State, was shot in a night club by gunmen at Strand Area of Cape Town last Sunday.”

“The assailants escaped after the shooting and the victim died before being rushed to the hospital.” Ibitoye also said the second victim, Chimezie Oranusi, 26, from Oba town in Anambra State, was shot with a friend in a car at Delst area of Cape Town.

An election petitions tribunal sitting in Benin, Edo State, has Affirmed Godwin Obaseki as the winner of the gubernatorial elections held on September 28, 2016.

The Peoples Democratic Party and its candidate in the election, Osagie Ize-Iyamu, had challenged Mr. Obaseki’s election, alleging widespread irregularities.

The Chairman of the three-man panel, Justice Ahmed Badamasi, held that the petitioners failed to support their pleadings with evidence as well as abandoned some pleadings in their petition.

Justice Badamasi held that many witnesses called by the petitioners were discredited during cross examination and gave hearsay evidence.

An NGO Edo based group under the auspice of Face to Face Initiative has written to the EFCC demanding the immediate probe of Edo state interim Chief Press Secretary Jahn Mayaki for alleged misappropriation of Funds.

In a letter written and forwarded to the EFCC by a legal firm C.O Igbenedion & Co, the group is accusing the CPS of embezzling the sum of N13.5 million claimed to have been spent on the media by the state government.


A few days ago, a reporter from ThisDay News paper,by the name Adibe Emenyonu claimed that he had proof that state CPS had embezzled the said N13.2 million under the guise of media coverage.

Indications have emerged that the Nigerian economy is on its way out of recession considering the 2016 overall and last quarter Gross Domestic Product (GDP) reports.

A review of the recent GDP figures released Tuesday by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), show a contraction of -1.30% in the fourth quarter of 2016, translating into an estimated economic growth rate of -1.51% for the full year.


Besides, the Nigerian economy actually performed better overall last year as the growth rate was higher with a contraction at -1.5% than the -1.8% predicted by the IMF.

This raised the hope that the recession may have bottom up with the improving trends in several key sectors of the economy including agriculture and mining.
