uj_sizzle: Are you saying the muslims who are totally covered up don't get raped too?the muslims you say?? How many of the nowaday muslims can you stand for that are completely covered up like before. Even the school uniforms nowadays makes that rather impossible |
I-am-Winner:thank you...my point exactly, thus bringing us back to square one....we have been so much influenced that we are like water going in the direction we are channeled. We no longer have a stand, we are complete slaves to their culture. Our low self esteem makes us believe they are always right and we are wrong |
In my country nigeria, yes, its because of indecent dressing, and clubbing which is a western mode of socializing and having fun. Lets not deviate though. India is not an african country. More to say, our cultures are totally different |
♥Dεs•Chγκσ♥:may i add that most parents are doing incredibly well bringing up their children, but you cant monitor them 24/7 if you agree with me. And the youths of our days, no matter how you try, they always tend to do that which is on their mind, you can haRdly dictate for them what to wear or how to behave anymore |
I-am-Winner:i dont, but if the westerners want the world to believe theirs, they might as well believe ours |
Obinoscopy: I understand you have addressed the rebuttals on this aspect. However the topic of discussion is on western civilisation, if I'm not mistaken. So whats the correlation between the bolded and western civilization?rightly asked. But i want to counter your question with another. Is this dance of cultural origin, or of social origin as a result of the so called western civilization?? |
I-am-Winner:why dont they believe the yoruba creation story or the hausa creation story. Pls mind you, dont counter this with the bible, put into consideration the westerners scientific theory of man's origin |
The Last Nazgûl: so working in Oil coys causes amnesia? Truly, we learn everyday.no, but it seems our quest for money and fame causes it |
The Last Nazgûl: your efforts are applaudable but they have missed the mark. How did this economic drift erode the cultural values you hold dear? This is a cultural debate not one on trickle down economics as revenue sharing is totally out of the question.if that is what you want then you shall get it. Has it come to your mind that since the advent of the oil companies, no one wants to think of their culture?? Due to work, some of us don't even know where we come from again. Many people have not visited their villages for over 10 years, i have such a colleague. How then do you intend to carry on the culture when the old folks die?? |
The Last Nazgûl: If there's one thing I know about technology, it's the fact that it's ubiquitous, relatively commonplace. Technology or in this case communication technology is not the exclusive preserve of the rich as a range of communication devices are availiable for both ends of the economic spectrum this affording the pauper and the lord of the manor the opportunity to nick a gadget of their choice regardless of their economic restrictions or otherwise.yes i know that, but what would you supposedly do if you are stranded in a jungle or remote village, no network coverage, or power down on your gizmo, what then would be your alternative?? Shouting?? |
I-am-Winner:eating our food and putting on our attire does't mean they have adapted to our culture, why can't they share in our various beliefs as well if etighi has been in existence, why is it just surfacing now, and why didn't you point out the azonto dance?? or didn't i mention that too?? is it because you know very well that it is of Ghanian origin?? |
The Last Nazgûl: Nigeria was once a agrarian society and her diversification of the economy via her entry into the Oil and gas sector is justified. This is in line with moving with the economic times given her possessing abundant petroleum resources. Mind telling how this development has eroded our culture and how a return to agriculture would stem the tide of cultural and moral bankruptcy that you claim has taken hold of us.very simple....make reference to ancient times......there was nothing like oil-tapping and the likes, mining was present, but no oil exploration. Now, we Nigerians are blessed with fertile soils all over the federation, and we can see in our modern day that such land meant for agriculture is been used to build plants and firms. The oil as you have rightfully implied generates income, but how many of us enjoy its revenues. The oil in question is not food, we can't eat it, it will finish sooner or later, what then happens to the land so devastatingly polluted by the oil products which is no longer suit for agriculture which would have then returned to take its place as the income generator |
I-am-Winner:Yes, invented in Nigeria, but in a quest to copy who?? Is it not still pointing to those who tried to show them that what they call culture is local, and should be disregarded. The westerners do not regard our culture as much as we regard theirs. If they do, why don't they atleast adapt a little to ours, just as we have done to theirs?? |
The Last Nazgûl: This staement of yours brings to the fore the maidens dance of Swaziland, a festival of sorts that entailed damsels of certain ages displaying ample quantities of their cleavage and other unsavoury parts in a bid to nick husbands. Mind telling how western civilisation birthed this obscene culture that is an integral part of the local culture of the aforementioned nation?Note your comment there. As you said, it is their culture, secondly it is a festival, thirdly only selected maidens dress that way, fourthly it is for the purpose of bidding for husbands. I don't see any line in your post that says on a normal day the maidens dress that way. In addition, Swaziland, though a country, is also a kingdom, Nigeria on the other hand is a country though containing several kingdoms. But the problem here is that the western mode of dressing has become our daily attire. The so called swaziland dance, i believe is done with cultural attires, quote me if i am wrong |
The Last Nazgûl: Communication need not be done via the use of bonfires on hilltops, one need not go through all that stress anymore as civilisation has infused a plethora of better communication channels. You can bring civilization to man, but you cannot force him to accept it. Yes, civilization has brought about modern communication channels, but what has civilization done about the issue of a common lay man who might not be able to afford the so called modern communication channels?? It has been seen on some of this modern communication gadgets like the mobile phone that they do loose network coverage sometimes, unexpectedly if i should add, but i believe the so called bonfires and smoke signals are ever available and online ![]() |
SMH......UNIBEN has gone on strike |
I-am-Winner:i want to ask, don't you think the so called westerners have superstitions of their own?? Take for example the believe in vampires, zombies, witches riding broom sticks and the likes |
The Last Nazgûl: It is common knowledge that the continent of Africa lagged behind other continents at the turn of the last century as the ways(culture) of the denizens of the continent were relatively primitive and leagues behind the developmental strides that had swept through Europe, cue the industrial revolution. Western civilisation introduced and has continued to introduce modernity to the African continent. It is seen that the Chinese, Japanese and the likes, even down to really bad countries like Bangladesh, Haiti etc. They all kept to that which they believed in, even if the westerners brought about civilization to our beloved continent, Nigeria was not the only country that experienced it, South Africa also did, so why is that of the Nigerians degrading and demoralizing our society today |
The Last Nazgûl: Culture is the benchmark of humans as it's places him in a class of his own, distinguished him from others. Culture possess certain intrinsic and unalienable features which sets it and those within it's ambit aside from others. From what you said here now, has copying the western culture placed us in a class of our own?? If culture truly has unalienable features which set it and others within it aside from others, how has abandoning our own culture and picking that of the white man set us aside from them?? |
i-am-winner:Rightly defined i must say. but i want to ask, what would happen if Nigeria developed itself. The westerners are humans like us, they don't have two heads. Wouldn't it be better to be slaves to our own initiated modern culture than to be slaves to that of another man's country? |

WESTERN CIVILIZATION HAS DONE MORE HARM THAN GOOD TO OUR CULTURE Good day chairman, moderators as well as coordinators, co-debaters and my highly esteemed audience. We are debating the resolution, “Western civilization has done more harm than good to our culture”. We on the affirmative team, support this with the following reasons: Our culture is highly threatened by western civilization. Martin Luther King jr. once said “our most cherished values begin to end when we become silent over the things that matter”. Culture can be defined as the way of life of a people in a given society. It is characterized by beliefs, customs, traditions, religions and others. A people’s culture can be seen in the food they eat, clothes they wear, music, dance and values (what is acceptable to them as a people). Nigerian cultures are diverse and varied; not static, and like most of the world, have been impacted upon by external forces. During the post colonial era, African women and fashion played an important role in showcasing Africa’s beauty in what was then referred to as the Pride of the African Woman. They dressed with dignity and made sure all sensitive parts of their bodies were adequately covered. Practices such as indecent exposure; exposed cleavage, naked stomach and all other sensitive body parts were completely unacceptable to the African woman who placed her dignity above anything else. Making reference to Nigeria, nowadays, the reverse is the case as females go around virtually naked, all in the name of fashion. This is as a result of influential celebrities such as Rihanna, Beyonce etc seen in magazines and on the media who dress inappropriately, convincing the youths of our time that what they see is what’s reigning. This indecent dressing brings about molestation from both sex, rape and the likes. Secondly, according to an estimate, African girls of today spend more money on fashion than what they spend on food and books combined. From pedicure to manicure, skin bleaching cosmetics, hair relaxers, wigs, weaves, eyelashes, nails amongst others. Many ladies in the universities even go to the extreme; they blow part of their school fees on items that will make them look sexy. Take Nigeria for example, it is estimated that Nigeria has a population of about 155million people with about 56% between the ages of 16-54years old. Out of this age group, women are more than 40million. The details are as follows; Male = 44,296,228; Female = 42,534,542. Therefore with over 40million women in Nigeria, if each one of them spends at least $1 dollar a week on any of the above items, how much will that be? At least, that is $40million dollars per week; making it about $150 million dollars per month. Mind you, this figure applies to Nigeria only. What about the women across all the 54 African countries combined? Everyday, Korean and Brazilian families thank black women for giving their countries $16.4million dollars each. The low self-esteem of African women is making them very rich and they’re happy about that. Throughout Africa, women spend billions of dollars every week to import Brazilian, Peruvian and Asian hair, European wigs, weavons etc, all because the African woman does not appreciate her God given natural beauty anymore. She bleaches her skin and spends so much on her hair because she wants to look Asian, European or American. She believes that is sexy! The result; cancer and other numerous untold consequences. At the same time, the African fashion has been thrown to the dogs. Africa therefore spends all this money to create jobs for Asia, Europe and America, whilst unemployment and poverty is becoming the destiny of some African people. Thirdly, the problem of indecent exposure is not limited to the ladies. A very common practice with boys of today is ‘pant sagging’. It is believed that this originated in prisons of the U.S.A, as a way to display homosexuality. Therefore the male inmates had little or no difficulty in identifying the homosexuals in their midst if need be. In Nigeria, some males have crossed the boundaries of this so called fashion, as not only do they sag the trousers, but also boxers and pants as well. They copy foreign and local rap artistes and dress like hooligans, destroying their image before reputable people, companies and the society as a whole. How then do they expect to be employed by such companies, or make them employ people from the country based on the characters they have seen being exhibited by the youths and undergraduates? In addition, the discovery of oil has helped immensely as well as caused a lot of damage. Before now, Nigerians could farm, feeding was never a problem, but after the discovery of oil, Agriculture was abandoned. Now, everyone wants to work in a company. Our problem is that we copy and fail to copy well. The white man has oil companies, and still has farms for food production, but all we want is the oil, forgetting Agriculture which is the mainstay of the country and potential major source of income. In conclusion, another area affected greatly is our mode of dance. Before now, we all cherished our different cultural dances, but now that has been thrown to the dogs and the likes of dances like ‘alingo’, “azonto”, ‘break-dance’, ‘etigi’, etc are now making waves. Our culture is gradually fading away, and the western civilization is to be blamed for this. Ladies and gentlemen, we have talked about the cultural, personal and social aspects of the harm caused by western civilization. Through these reasons we propose, it is clear that western civilization has done more harm than good to our culture. |
