Politics › Jonathan Has No Security But 2015 Agenda -APC Govs by Ghydyon(op): 8:33pm On Dec 03, 2013 |
Governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress have accused President Goodluck Jonathan of abandoning security of the country for his second term ambition. The APC governors, in a statement issued under the aegis of Progressives Governors Forum in Abuja on Tuesday, said this while commiserating with the people and the government of Borno State over the recent attacks on Maiduguri airport, Air Force Base and other areas of the state by Boko Haram insurgents and the attendant loss of lives and property. The opposition governors, in a statement by the Director-General of the PGF, Mallam Salihu Lukman, said the security situation in several parts of the country had continued to deteriorate despite the extension of the state of emergency in some states and the huge sums of money supposedly spent on security. The statement said, “As it were, notwithstanding the fact that nearly one-third of this year’s federal government budget was devoted to defence and security, few Nigerians actually feel safe. “The most recent attack was particularly telling as it shows that President Goodluck Jonathan has no security agenda and is only focused on retaining power beyond 2015. “The result of this criminal negligence is the unabated slaughter of lives. Clearly the security structures set up in the region have been overwhelmed.” PGF called on the President to reassess his security strategy and focus more on the critical issues of the day.” www.punchng.com/news/jonathan-has-no-security-but-2015-agenda-apc-govs/ |
Politics › EFCC Fails To Re-arraign Ex-Governor Sylva by Ghydyon(op): 7:47pm On Dec 03, 2013 |
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Tuesday failed in its bid to re-arraign former Governor of Bayelsa State, Timipreye Sylva, and six others on a fresh 42 counts before an Abuja Federal High Court.
The EFCC had, in a statement it on Monday, announced the plan to re-arraign the former governor alongside other accused persons – Francis Okuburo, Gbenga Balogun, Samuel Ogbuku, Marlin Maritime Limited, Eat Catering Services Limited and Halloween Blue Construction and Logistics Limited.
Sylva is currently facing a pending criminal charge also filed by the EFCC before the Abuja FHC, but the anti-graft agency in the statement explained that the new charge followed fresh evidence of corruption in its investigations into the former governor’s activities while in office between 2009 and 2012.
However, the planned re-arraignment could not take place even though Sylva was within the premises of the Abuja FHC.
Justice Adamu Bello, who is hearing the pending case filed against the former governor by the EFCC, had earlier on Tuesday morning heard an application in which Sylva, for the third time, asked for the release of his international passport to enable him to travel abroad for medical attention.
As a result of the development, the EFCC had to wait for the conclusion of the hearing before it could arraign Sylva on the fresh 42 counts before Justice Ahmed Mohammed, also of the Abuja FHC.
There were indications that the former governor would be re-arrested and remanded in custody after the planned re-arraignment.
When proceedings in the fresh charge against Sylva eventually resumed before Justice Mohammed, Sylva did not enter the courtroom.
In fact, only two of the accused persons entered the dock when the case was called by the court clerk.
Tempers flared in the courtroom after EFCC lawyer, Rotimi Jacobs, SAN, informed the court that Sylva, the first accused person, was present within the court premises but had refused to enter the dock to take his plea. www.punchng.com/news/drama-as-efcc-fails-to-re-arraign-sylva/ |

Politics › EFCC Re-arraigns Sylva For Alleged N19bn Scam by Ghydyon(op): 10:45pm On Dec 02, 2013 |
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission will on Tuesday re-arraign former Governor of Bayelsa State, Timipre Sylva, and six others on 42 counts before Justice A. R. Mohammed of the Federal High Court, Abuja. The other accused persons are Francis Okuburo, Gbenga Balogun, Samuel Ogbuku, Marlin Maritime Limited, Eat Catering Services Limited and Haloween Blue Construction and Logistics Limited. According to a statement on Monday by the Acting Head, Media and Publicity, EFCC, Wilson Uwujaren, Sylva’s re-arraignment is sequel to fresh evidence linking him with a bouquet of fraudulent transactions that border on money laundering during his tenure as governor of Bayelsa State between 2009-2012. The anti-graft agency had earlier arraigned Sylva over six counts of criminal conspiracy and conversion of state’s property and resources amounting to N2.45bn before Justice Adamu Bello of the Federal High Court, Abuja. The Prosecution counsel, Festus Keyamo, said Sylva allegedly perpetrated the fraud through proxies under the false pretences of using the amount to augment salaries of the Bayelsa State Government. www.punchng.com/news/efcc-re-arraigns-sylva-for-alleged-n19bn-scam-tuesday/ |
