Eggs have three separate sections — the shell, the white and the yolk. Egg yolks used to have a bad reputation because of their high-cholesterol content with doctors and health authorities once recommending that people limit egg yolk consumption. However, research has shown that cholesterol level in the blood is affected by other factors. While the health benefits of egg whites are widely known, egg yolks have health benefits, too. Like egg whites, egg yolks have a high protein content and contain many essential vitamins, minerals, fats, and healthy calories. Below are health benefits of egg yolks that you should know before you toss the egg yolk away. Eye Health According to research, egg yolk contains carotenoids which help to lower the risk of age-related macular degeneration and cataracts. Carotenoids act as antioxidants in the eye, protecting it from free radicals that can damage different parts of the retina, impacting its ability to correctly focus light. Benefits of Choline Choline helps reduce the chances of developing breast cancer in women. Egg yolks also help promote heart and to regulate cardiovascular function. More Vitamins If you are going to toss any part of your egg away, you should toss the egg white and not your egg yolk because egg yolks contain more vitamins (and larger quantities of those vitamins) than egg whites. Each egg yolk contains seven vitamins: B6, folate, a B vitamin, B-12, A, D, E and K. interestingly, egg yolks are one of only a handful of foods in which vitamin D is naturally found. More Minerals Egg yolks and egg whites each have 13 varieties of minerals. Although both the egg white and egg yolk contain these minerals, the yolk has larger amounts of most. The egg yolk boasts of 90 percent of an egg’s calcium, 93 percent of its iron content with just 7 percent in the white https://www.nigerialog.com/health/4-health-benefits-of-egg-yolk/new/#new |
Getting a good night’s rest can be such a task sometimes but, luckily there are ways in which you can avoid sleepless nights. One of such ways is improving your diet, if you haven’t already. And this can also reflect in as little as what you drink. Warm milk, chamomile tea and cherry juice are all beverages that are believed to be effective sleeping aids for restless sleepers. So if you’re having trouble sleeping, chances are you’ll try almost anything to get that good night’s rest. But have you tried any of these beverages? Milk Even though this option is common, it still has many divided. Some say drinking milk – especially warm milk – can help promote sleep, while others say there is no evidence that it does. However, it is important to note that milk contains another hormone called melatonin which is also related to sleep and relaxation. Dairy milk contains tryptophan, which is an amino acid used to manufacture a neurotransmitter melatonin. Chamomile Tea Chamomile is a mild tranquilizer and sleep-inducer and a warm beverage can be very calming which makes this tea appropriate. According to a 2010 study by Case Western Reserve University, the sedative effects may be due to the presence of the flavonoid apigenin, a bioactive constituent of chamomile. Banana Shakes Bananas are an excellent source of magnesium and potassium and also contain tryptophan (a mentioned above). All you need to do is simply combine your favourite milk with a banana and some cinnamon in a blender and you are good to go. Also, other foods and fruits containing magnesium are potent enough to relax your nerves while inducing sleep. https://www.nigerialog.com/health/3-drinks-that-can-help-you-sleep-well-at-night/new/#new |

The holiday season is finally upon us and soon, we will be bidding farewell to a 365 days of working so hard. As much as it is only natural for you to feel like going on a “vacation” to relax and let off some steam, it is a little cliché. Why not spice it up a bit with a truckload of gifts? Ok, maybe not a truckload but a reasonable amount of item(s). This is also dependent on what your spouse likes, assuming you know what his or her love language is. Sometimes, knowing the love language isn’t the final solution, you may find yourself racking the top of your brain on what will make the perfect gift item. Without piercing a hole into your pocket, these are a few suggestions that can also serve as a good alternative to what you [may] already have mapped out. As is said “Ladies first”. For Her As stated above, you need to be aware of what your partner likes; this will guide how you choose. And if sadly, you don’t stick to something feminine and sweet, but not cliché. A Hamper This may sound cliché because with festive periods comes hampers. But, what is in the hamper makes it stand out. How about you substitute the box of chocolates or whatever comes in it for a basket filled with heavenly scented candles and most of her favourite beauty brands and products. An array of the latest Kylie Jenner lip glosses, lipsticks, powder, mascara, a set of multi-purpose brushes etc. You can also throw a thing or two that you are sure she likes. This can make your woman leap with joy. An All-Expense Paid Trip To… Yeah, I mentioned travelling might be a little cliché but all trips don’t require you hopping on a plane or train. An all-expense paid trip can be to the spa. Every lady enjoys getting a properly done massage that relaxes every bone in her body, especially if she’s your pro in bed gymnastics. The [body] treatments? Ah, yes those! We love facials, soaking up our feet in jelly-based foam treatment and getting our nails done. So, look up the BEST spa in town and surprise her with a day of relaxation. The “12 days of Christmas” Magic I bet you recall singing “On the first day of Christmas, my true love gave to me…”, well, let’s tweak that a bit. How about doing a twelve days of Christmas surprises for your partner? It could be twelve days of cooking all her favourite meals and something new, or twelve days of exploring all the fun places you couldn’t through the course of the year as a result of your busy schedules, or twelve days of binge watching your favourite shows indoors. This doesn’t mean you are should rule out numbers one and two and works vice versa. Let’s be guided, please. For Him To all the ladies out there who have a man [or two?] please do better this season. No more boxer-shorts-gifting to the love of your life. He deserves better and an equal level of pampering. So here goes the idea list: A Gift Box Not an empty gift box. Many stores are getting really creative these days. There are really dapper gift boxes that contain essential fashion items. For instance, a box could contain [all leather products] a wallet, wristwatch, belt, cufflinks, neck ties, sometimes a pair of shoes. Some even throw in a few beauty products like beard oil. All these come in handy because you don’t have to worry about searching for where to buy these items individually and are sold at a highly discounted price (that will ideally be the price of one item from the box). So, it’s always a good buy. Games? Yes, Please! Few months back, FIFA 20 was released and the joy expressed on social media by the menfolk could not be summed up. So yeah, men like playing games. Gift him the latest release of his favorite game and if he’s lacking the pads and console, make it a complete collection. So, while all these are suggestions, feel free to add what you think your partner will deeply appreciate. Happy holiday! https://www.nigerialog.com/romance/to-mine-with-love-gift-surprises-for-your-partner/new/#new |

It is so easy to come across male traditional rulers in Nigeria and Africa at large. They’re very visible figures seen around their local communities and are even known wider, depending on the particular ruler. However, it is almost unusual to hear of female rulers in Nigeria. Often times, they are either wives and put in charge of the ‘domestic affairs’ as heads of women groups. This is a reflection of the patriarchal nature of affairs in the country and laws that women cannot hold such positions in their local communities. One of the most common outliers, when the topic of female leadership in the traditional society is mentioned, is Orompoto. Orompoto or Orompotoniyun as she’s more commonly referred to as made history as the first and only female Alaafin of Oyo. The Oyo Empire is one of the foremost empires in West Africa and rose through the outstanding organisational and administrative skills of the Yoruba people. Orompoto was responsible for leading the Oyo Empire between the years 1554 to 1562. She was the daughter of Alaafin Ofinran and the grand-daughter of Alaafin Onigbogi, both rulers of the Empire in their own time. When her father died, her brother, Prince Eguguoju became the next in line to the throne and he succeeded his father. However, he died in his young reign without a male successor. Her younger brothers, Prince Ajiboyede and Prince Tella were very young and as such couldn’t assume the throne at the time. As a result, Orompoto would leave her role as a regent (one that was instrumental in driving the Nupe from Oyo in 1555 after a protracted battle) to assume the throne. This decision didn’t sit well with the council of chiefs as there had been no female rulers in the history of the kingdom. The chiefs and elders had started making plans on who to install as the next ruler of the Oyo Empire. For every plan they made, Orompoto was even more strong-willed and insistent that she was the only link to the dynasty and had to sit on the throne. In a bid to defend her family rights, Princess Orompoto summoned the chiefs to discuss plans for her coronation and this met the same negligent response. She then asked to prove to the elders and chiefs that she was a man, seeing as that was the only hindrance to her coronation. The chiefs thought it would be a good way to ridicule her and asked her to prove her masculinity and strip naked at the palace in seven days. Princess Orompoto started wearing male items of clothing after this meeting and on the D-day, she mounted the podium and removed her cap to reveal her hair which had been cut low. She also went ahead to show her chest and still, the elders were not impressed. She finally removed her trousers and according to oral history, the chiefs not only saw a penis, but they also saw a scrotum sack drooping with two scrotum eggs in the sack. At that point, everyone dropped on their chest in prostration and she got enthroned as Alaafin Orompotoniyun. Orompotoniyun came to be popularly known as Ajiun, the custodian of the vagina that kills evil plots. Orompoto became Alaafin of Oyo and was reportedly masterfully skilled on horseback, and created a specialised order of cavalry officers within her army that were subject to the Eso Ikoyi. She was also considered a skilful warrior and distinguished herself at the battle of Illayi. She is said to have died in battle, one of the few Alaafins to have died in combat. https://www.nigerialog.com/culture/orompoto-the-first-fe/msg58598/#msg58598 |
When it comes to hygiene, one is always particular about if the water is clean. But, no matter how “clean” water appears to be, there could be hidden germs in it. This is where antiseptics come in and have since dominated hygiene practices. However, it is believed that adding a few drops of these liquids to our bathing water or making use of its soap automatically guarantees a germ-free skin, but, that might just be a myth. Generally, antiseptics have a variety of uses both in and out of medical settings. In both settings, they’re applied to either the skin or mucous membranes – lines various cavities in the body and covers the surface of internal organs. Some of these ideal uses include: Hand washing: Medical professionals use antiseptics for hand scrubs and rubs in hospitals. Cleaning skin before an operation. Antiseptics are applied to the skin before any kind of surgery to protect against any harmful microorganisms that might be on the skin. Treating skin infections. You can buy OTC antiseptics to reduce the risk of infection in minor cuts, burns, and wounds. Examples include hydrogen peroxide and rubbing alcohol. Treating throat and mouth infections. Some throat lozenges contain antiseptics to help with sore throats due to a bacterial infection. These are a few ideal ways in which antiseptics should be used. Also, one needs to understand that the use of antiseptics in bathing water isn’t advisable and its routine use is bad for the skin; a simple plain soap and water should suffice. https://www.nigerialog.com/health/5-ideal-uses-of-antiseptic-liquids/new/#new |
It is not unusual to sometimes notice peeling skin considering the hands get exposed to various irritating situations and substances each day. Peeling skin is most commonly a sign of damage to the upper layer of your skin (epidermis) caused by sunburn. In less common cases, peeling skin can be a sign of an immune system disorder or other illness. Peeled skin often leaves us with rough or scraggly surfaces that can lead to various infections if any bacteria enter through this cracked skin. If you are hoping to prevent peeling skin, it is important to know some of the most common causes in order to know how to effectively protect yourself according to Lybtae. Allergic Reactions: Different people are allergic to different skin irritants, it could range from nail polish, soapy water, nickel, latex, solvents, and detergents. Nail-biting: Before you take the next bite of your nails out of habit, keep in mind that nail-biting can make skin cuticles, and nails ill. The damaged cuticles can result in a skin infection of which skin peeling is one. Finger or thumb sucking: A persistent habit of a finger or thumb sucking causes dry skin and leads to peeling. Hence, it is also commonly seen in an infant or toddler. Nutritional deficiency: A deficiency of vitamin or calcium can cause your dryness of the skin and this makes it prone to flake or peel off. Due to various skin diseases: Various skin diseases also cause skin peeling around the nails. Psoriasis, eczema, and dyshidrosis are the most common cause of it. Eczema is an inflammation of the skin which results in dry, and itchy skin which ultimately leads to skin peeling whereas psoriasis targets the life cycle of the skin cells, and causes a rapid buildup of cells on the surface of their skin, leading to the formation of patches, and scales. Dyshidrosis is a rare skin problem in which fluid-filled blisters are formed on sides of the fingers which can also lead to skin peeling around nails. Chronic infection: Bacterial or fungal infection (caused by moisture) can also lead to the peeling of skin around the cuticle. Excessive handwashing: You have probably been told that handwashing helps to keep you healthy but constant washing hands of the hand with soap can hamper the lipid barrier of skin which can cause the soap to absorb into sensitive layers of skin, leading to irritation, and peeling. https://www.nigerialog.com/health/9-causes-of-peeling-skin/new/#new |
There is a thin line between being nice to people and people-pleasing. It is one thing to always want to help people to make them happy but when this goes beyond simple kindness, then you are toeing the line of people-pleasing. As a people-pleaser, you go out of your way to do things for the people in your life, based on what you assume they want or need. You give up your time and energy to get them to like you. Being a people-pleaser is a damaging habit as you neglect yourself and place people’s wants as more important than our own needs. Keep reading to recognise some telltale signs that can help you know if you are a people-pleaser. You have a low opinion of yourself. Low self-esteem People pleasers often deal with low self-esteem and draw their self-worth from the approval of others. You convince yourself that people care about you when you are useful to them and their praise/appreciation acts as a validation to your existence. You need others to like you As a people-pleaser, one of your major fears is the fear of rejection hence you are constantly doing things in a bid to get others to like and accept you. You go out of your way for people in a bid to feel needed as you believe that their needing you make it harder for them to reject you. It’s hard for you to say “no” You find it hard to say no It doesn’t matter if you want to do it or not, you simply find yourself saying yes to request people ask of you because it seems like a safer option. The truth is when you are unable to stand your ground and turn down people, some unscrupulous personalities will take advantage of you and ignore your boundaries because they know you will do what they want. You are comfortable with always taking the blame People-pleasing involves readiness to take on the blame, even when what happened has nothing to do with you. You apologise because you feel terrible and not taking the blame may mean that people will not like you. Agreeability often seems like a surefire way to win approval If you go along with something you don’t agree with just to keep everyone happy, you’re setting yourself (and others) up for future frustration. If both of the plans have clear flaws, you’re doing everyone a disservice by not speaking up..... https://www.nigerialog.com/random-thoughts/6-telltale-signs-you-like-to-people-please/new/#new |
Slowly we are transitioning into that season characterised by cool, dust-laden wind and extreme dryness. The harmattan which occurs between the end of November and the middle of March can be very harsh to one’s health. Our bodies note the weather changes and react accordingly. Some of the effects of the harmattan include dry skin (because of the obvious loss of moisture), cracked lips, sole of the feet and even the skin itself (cracks even become ulcerated). Below are three health tips to keep in mind during the harmattan season. Stay Hydrated This is probably the most important tip on this list. Drink a lot of water even if you have to carry around a bottle of water. Steer clear of caffeinated beverages such as coffee and even tea because they are diuretics and diuretics increase the excretion of water from bodies. Eat A Lot Of Fruits Fruits are rich in vitamins and minerals that would keep your body healthy during the harmattan season. It is advised to eat fruits rich in vitamin C such as mango, papaya, pineapple, strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, cranberries, watermelon, guavas, bell peppers, kiwifruit, oranges, papayas, broccoli, tomatoes, kale. Skin Care The skin is one of the first receptors of the harsh weather. The dryness in the atmosphere drains the skin of moisture. It is therefore important to regularly moisturizes the skin. Ensure to use an oil-based moisturizer such as vaseline, shea butter, coconut oil etc. Also, exfoliate your skin a few times a week to help shave off dead and dry skin cells and allow new skin cells to come up. https://www.nigerialog.com/health/3-health-tips-for-the-harmattan-season/new/#new |

Many people have been affected by boil, at times it causes sleepless nights and at times, the pain is subtle. According to Greatist News, boils generally form when pus collects under your skin, centered on a hair follicle. When this is due to an infection, it’s known as a furuncle. Boils are not always due to an infection and can happen in a condition known as Hidradenitis suppurativa. Boils most often form where there’s friction, sweat, or hair. The neckline, face, armpit, and, yes, butt crack are some common hot spots. Below are some home remedies for treating boil: Heat A warm compress applied to a boil can help facilitate drainage of the boil. This is very vital in healing a boil and should be your first course of action. The American Academy of Dermatology suggests soaking a washcloth in warm water and applying it to the area for 10 to 15 minutes, three or four times a day. This will help break down the pus from within. Castor Oil This oil is made from the castor bean plant, this oil contains ricinoleic acid, a fatty acid that may help break down trapped bacteria. Castor oil has been used since ancient times to heal wounds and moisturize skin. Making appointments to carry out a general health assessment or checkup with your doctor is important especially for the elderly. When we age, our body slows down in its processes and we become more susceptible to diseases and stress. A periodic checkup or screening helps detect, diagnose and manage diseases early on. It is also important to get checked because of silent disease conditions such as hypertension that only show symptoms when there is significant damage. Older people can live stronger and age better if they are well managed and carry out recommended screenings. For some of the leading causes of death in the elderly and across all age groups, early screening and management can help improve outcomes. As with most diseases, early management improves health outcomes. The frequency of these health visits depends on your current health status and your age. For the elderly, a checkup at least once every three years is advisable if they do not have any symptoms or health conditions. However, it is not unusual for people in this age group to have a health condition that warrants follow-up consultations. What health checks should you carry out? Annual glucose test to check for diabetes. Type 2 diabetes typically develops over time and may be screened for. If you have diabetes or prediabetes, lifestyle changes and/or medications can be started early as necessary. Eye screening and examination every year to assess for glaucoma, cataracts and other common eye conditions. With prompt care, these eye conditions can be efficiently managed or averted. Annual prostate cancer screening for men. A rectal examination and a blood test will be carried out to assess your prostate health. A scan may be ordered if there are any grey areas. Annual clinical breast examination and mammography for women. This is to help detect breast cancer early. Pap smear for women. This is used to screen for cervical cancer. You should visit your dentist every year to assess your oral health and address any concerns about your dental health. You can also get your teeth cleaned at this encounter. What should you expect? Schedule an appointment with your health provider for a health checkup as appropriate. You will be asked questions about your general health and well-being as well as questions about any long-term conditions. Thereafter, a physical assessment and examination will be carried out to check your blood pressure, weight and height, heart rate and temperature measurement, and other necessary body parts/systems. The screenings listed above will then be arranged as appropriate https://www.nigerialog.com/health/health-checks-for-the-elderly/new/#new |

The word depression stems from the Latin verb, deprimere meaning to “press down.” Despite this, it goes beyond pressing down. Contrary to popular opinion, not all feelings of sadness is depression. Depression is triggered by the chemical imbalance in neurotransmitters in the brain. This results in persistent bouts of sadness, sleeping disorder among others. Clinical depression, a severe form of depression, is defined by the United States National Institute of Mental Health (NIHM), “Depression (major depressive disorder or clinical depression) is a common but serious mood disorder that causes severe symptoms which can affect how you feel, think and handle daily activities, such as sleeping, eating or working.” Some of these symptoms include: Anger Pessimism Frustration Irritability and restlessness Feelings of guilt and worthlessness Loss of interest in activities Difficulty in sleeping Feelings of tiredness Thoughts of death or suicide Difficulty concentrating Eating disorder For one to be diagnosed with clinical depression, its symptoms must have been occurring for at least two weeks. Research reveals that there are certain factors contribute to the onset of depression, including genetics, changes in hormone levels, illnesses such as liver disease, stress, grief or difficult life circumstances. Contrary to the belief that it is a white man’s illness and a spiritual attack, the World Health Organisation (WHO), in 2017, revealed that Nigeria is the leading country with the highest number of heads of households exhibiting depressive symptoms, in Africa with about 22%. However, there is hope for those suffering from this illness. Once you can identify some of these symptoms, consult a doctor. Fortunately, depression can be treated via medications, psychotherapy or, in severe cases, electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). https://www.nigerialog.com/health/understanding-clinical-depression/new/#new |
You really don’t need no one to give yourself some tender loving care. It’s Valentine’s season again. It’s that time of the year again when everything seems to all about love and loving. In the the run up to February 14, many singles may become very painfully aware of their singleness, and for some, this could be subtly pressurizing. Here’s the reality though: you do not necessarily need a man or woman to enjoy your life on any given day – yeah, even on Valentine’s day! Afterall, if you don’t love and take care of yourself, who will? That said, here are five great ways to have a fantastic Valentine’s if you’re single for this year’s edition: 1. Have yourself a night out and enjoy the amazing discounts Yep. Who says you cannot do this all by yourself? Many places in your city will be offering one discount or the other on their specially made Valentine’s meals and condiments and of course, the ambiance will be out of this world, too. Why not go out there and spoil yourself a little? 2. How about taking some discounted shopping offers? If you’re bothered that seeing too many lovebirds doing romantic things at restaurants will trigger you, then shopping at a discount may be more of your thing. Stores will also be looking to tap into the Valentine’s spirit, offering one discount or the other. How about getting some more nice shoes , eh? 3. Netflix and chill! Since the day after Valentine’s day this year is still a work day, you can just stay indoors and make the best of it. You can buy a nice [or cheap] bottle of wine and simply just do you. 4. Night out with other single friends You and your 'untaken' friends can also be there for each other on this epic love night. Not in a misery-needs-company kinda way, but more of a night to celebrate each other and the great strides you are making individually. Valentine’s day provides you a perfect opportunity to remind each other how much you love yourselves – you and your fellas and of course, you and your girls. Why not take it? 5. Valentine's weekend getaway Going on a weekend getaway with them [your friends] also does not sound like a bad idea. After all, the weekend is not so far away from this year’s Valentine’s day celebration and the vibes can surely be carried over into the weekend. https://www.nigerialog.com/romance/single-at-valentines-here-are-5-lovely-ways-to-live-it-up-all-by-yourself!/new/#new |

Especially with Valentines day approaching, you may be tempted to think that being in a relationship is the only prerequisite to happiness. It is not. Look around you. You can literally see, feel and maybe even sniff the need for love and relationships in the air. Relationships and emotional matters are big topics of human interest. A huge number of people talk about love all the time - on social media, during lunch breaks at corporate settings, at home, on dates, social calls and friendly visits... every time... everywhere. My boyfriend this, my girlfriend that. Relationship goals here, love tips there. Everyone wants to fall in love, to have someone to call their own and to feel the enchantment of being in a relationship with someone. In the midst of all this, not many people pause to actually reflect and question their readiness for a relationship. Agreeably, love is a terrific, beautiful thing; something of pure joy, immeasurable bliss and ceaseless happiness... but only when done right. I am of the opinion that even when people approach relationships as they should, there are still chances that they won't find the dreamy levels of happiness and every other good thing that we've come to believe love entails. It is sometimes grim, and it is the truth. Love is as risky as almost every other thing in life. No matter how prepared and cautious you are, there is still an outside chance that something might go wrong. The possibility of success is high, but it is never absolutely certain. Even the best people get terribly hurt in love. If you are not in a relationship, be advised that you are not to feel under any pressure to enter into one. Relationships do not increase your chances of being happy, neither do you need to have someone to call your own before you enjoy a good life. Snap out of the relationship craze; this annoying, unfounded belief that some have that only relationships will bring you the kind of complete happiness you need. This is not to discredit the fact that relationships can be lovely and satisfying, but look around you, how many relationships are actually truly lovely and satisfying? Scarily low, right? That is so because many of those people you see are not even knowledgeable so as to know themselves, let alone why they are in the relationship or what they are meant to give or take from it If you do not know where your life is headed, or who you actually are, help yourself and others, steer clear of relationships and instead enjoy being single and unattached to anyone while you take a personal trip into self-discovery and self-understanding. When you know who you are, you will know when you are ready to have a relationship, who to have a relationship with and how to be in a relationship. Let no one coerce, force or shame you into falling into a relationship let alone a marriage that will break not just your heart, but the whole of your being. Your age and life achievements have nothing to do with this. Don't let them push you into it. You have the exclusive right to decide when that time comes. Just you. https://www.nigerialog.com/random-thoughts/you-don't-need-a-relationship-to-be-happier-than-you-are-now/new/#new |
A genotype is the genetic makeup of an organism. This describes the gene – the functional unit of inheritance in an individual, and their combinations. It is a set of instructions for the growth and the development of particular traits in the body, like a software. Each genotype codes for a specific feature and gives rise to observable outward or physical attributes, called phenotype which mostly depends on the genotype and the environment. The gene for a particular trait may exist in two forms called alleles in which one may be dominant (represented by a capital letter e.g. A) and another recessive (represented by a small letter e.g. a). These two are the building blocks of organisms which make us unique entities and are inherited from our parents. When genotype is discussed in love and relationships, it is often about genetic disorders – diseases that can be passed from parents to their offspring, chief of which is sickle cell disorder in our environment. Sickle cell disease is caused by two abnormal forms of haemoglobin, the oxygen-carrying component of red blood cells – one from each parent. The haemoglobin gene in humans has four main types: AA, AS, and AC, SS. Only haemoglobin AA is normal while AS and AC are carriers, containing the abnormal gene but do not have sickle cell disease. Sickle cell disease develops when an individual inherits a defective haemoglobin genotype from each parent. We can detect the genotype through blood testing. When selecting a partner hoping to produce children, it is imperative to factor in your haemoglobin genotypes for compatibility. Carriers of the abnormal haemoglobin gene should marry individuals with a normal haemoglobin genotype (AA) to prevent sickle cell disease, a multisystemic lifelong disease that limits life expectancy and productivity, in their children. https://www.nigerialog.com/health/genotype-and-your-love-life/new/#new |

Wearing glasses or sunglasses are more than just a fashion or sunny weather accessory, they can either make or mar an otherwise stylish look. Although it may seem like bad news, you know that no matter how symmetrical your face is, not every pair of sunglasses will look great on you. These tips below offer insight on how to select sunglasses to match your face shape. Round face If you have a round face, you have a broader forehead, full cheeks and rounded jawline than most. To get a defined look, glasses with square and rectangular-framed should be your pick. In addition, glasses that visually lengthen your face are what you should look at to draw attention from around your jawline, so choose glasses with dark frames. They help narrow your face and add contour to give it an oval shape. To balance your facial proportions, choose a frame where the width is greater than the height. Oval face The oval face shape is versatile and can get away with all kinds of sunglasses as the shape is well proportionate. People with an oval face have a chin that is slightly narrower than the forehead. Opt for wayfarer style sunglasses as the angular shape adds balance to a curvy face. Your goal is to not disturb your face’s harmonious proportions so avoid massive glasses and preferably go for sunglasses that have a frame as wide as your face or a little wider. Ensure the frame’s upper part is in line with your eyebrows. Square face You can add curves to your sharp face with round and oval frames like “Aviator Sunglasses” and “Butterfly Sunglasses”. Rounded frames will help to visually balance and soften overall facial proportions. Sharp-angled rectangular or square frames can “overload” your face’s outlines. Heart-shaped face People with heart-shaped faces have wider foreheads than their cheekbones and jawlines with a pointed chin. In choosing suitable sunglasses, your goal is to balance out the upper part of your face by making the lower part appear bulkier. Avoid massive-looking sunglasses, as they will add more bulk to the upper part. Instead, go for something light and thin with rounded edges to balance your sharp chin. Also, sunglasses, where the width equals the width of your face, works like a teardrop-shaped design, (wire-rim aviators work best for you). Diamond face People with diamond-shaped faces have a pointed chin with smaller jawlines than their cheekbones. If you have a diamond-faced shape, go for sunglasses with frames that widen your face and compliment your wide cheekbones. Sunglasses with wrap-around styles are your best picks. Rectangle face Just like the oval face shape but with an angular jawline, you should be looking at offsetting your face’s sharp angles with thin or translucent frames with oval or rounded edges. https://www.nigerialog.com/fashion/choosing-the-right-glasses-to-highlight-your-face-shape/new/#new |
The Princess buried herself alive to ensure her people won the war against the Jukuns and her statue stands in the market square in Idah. The story of Princess Inikpi is one of bravery and heroism. The legend of Princess Inikpi is morbid but empowering. She is remembered among the Igala people as a very beautiful and intelligent princess, whose selfless commitment and sacrifice helped rescue and keep the survival of the Igala nation. Though some parts of the historical recount differ depending on who is telling the story, there are many parts that are clear. Princess Inikpi was the only beloved daughter of Ayegbu Oma Idoko , the then Atta of Igala kingdom. According to Atabo, an adventurer from Idah, " The Igala people usually paid royalties to the Jukun kingdom in form of palm oil, yearly, but when Attah Ayegba became the Attah of Igala things changed, he wanted independence. – He sent bowls filled with faeces instead of oil to the Jukuns." He also says her full name is Inikpi oma’fedo baba, which means " Inikpi, the father’s beloved." This caused an imminent war between the Jukuns and Igalas (some historians say it was a war between the Bini kingdom and Igalas). However, this brooding war caused Igala land to become unsafe — farmlands being taken over by enemies and the streams poisoned. The Igalas feared imminent death from starvation and lack of water. When the Atta consulted the oracle, it proclaimed that to ensure safety of the kingdom and victory in the war, the king had to bury his most loved child alive — the only daughter of the king, Princess Inikpi. Surely the king was distraught and heartbroken. For days, he didn't eat or drink and he wished for an alternative solution. The princess noticed how downcast her father was and asked to know the reason behind his sadness. Instead of opening up, he held off telling her the story for seven days, but on the eight, he relented and told her the words of the Oracle. The Princess, who loved her father and her people as much as they loved her, could not bear the thought of holding off on the solution that would save Igala land. Therefore, she agreed to be sacrificed and set off voluntarily to the bank of River Niger at Idah, some say market square, where she was buried along with 9 slaves who would help her in the journey to the afterlife. According to some, when the enemies approached Igala Kingdom, what they saw was a town in flames and so they turned back with the assumption that the town (Idah) was already under attack. However, it was the influence of the sacrifice. For this, the Igala people are forever deeply grateful to Princess Inikpi for her sacrifice and act of heroism. A statue of the princess stands at “Ega” in Idah, which is considered the Igala traditional headquarters and many Igala people bear the name "Inikpi" to honour her. Several plays have also been produced to celebrate her story. https://www.nigerialog.com/culture/do-you-know-the-story-of-princess-inikpi-of-the-igala-people/new/#new |
