A Yellow Fever outbreak in Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State has allegedly led to the death of 115 people.

While members of the affected communities said they've lost 115 people, the local government authorities claimed only 18 people died in three weeks of the disease outbreak. A former councillor of Kogari ward who spoke to Daily Trust, said Kogari was first hit by the disease before spreading to Unguwar-Sarka community.

He said, ‘‘in the past three weeks, we have recorded over 115 deaths’’.

The Executive Secretary of the state Primary Health Care Development agency, Dr Shamsu Ahmad disclosed that 6,729,000 people were recently immunised against Yellow fever across the state.

“It is a suspected case of Yellow fever, and based on our line list and documentation, 45 people fell ill, and 18 deaths were recorded. As at today (Monday) there are 45 cases on ground. Of those ill, 11 blood samples were taken, five results turned out negative of Yellow fever and we are awaiting the result of six others. We normally take the samples to Abuja and Lagos for confirmation because we don’t have the facility to do it here”.

No fewer than 228 prisoners have reportedly escaped from the Medium Federal Correctional Centre located in Koton Karfe, Kogi State.

DAILY POST gathered that, heavy downpour on Monday morning in Koton-Karfi, aided the escape of the prisoners after the collapse of some parts of the Federal medium prison building while many houses were submerged by the flood in the community.

It was reliably gathered that the rain started at about 2 am on Monday, which created havoc leading to the destruction of some parts the prison building, which gave way for the inmates to escape.

When our correspondent visited the community on Monday, some of the people, who spoke with our reporter, said the rain was very heavy and it fell for several hours.

According him, it was due to the heavy downpour that caused the flood, which affected many houses and the prison building.

The acting Chief Imam of Koton-Karfi Karfi central mosque, Saidu Suleiman Nuhu, who also spoke with our reporter, said river Osugu over flooded its bank and destroyed so many houses including the prison, which led to the escape of some inmates.

However, effort to speak with Prison officers, who visited the scene proved abortive as every where was flooded but source close to the Prison service disclosed that about 228 of the inmates who escaped only 100 have been rearrested by the security agents.

The source added that the Deputy Controller General of Correctional Service Ahmed Jafaru had visited the place saying government will put everything in place to re-arrest some inmate who are still at large.

A 23-year-old boy, Promise Uzoma and his cousin, Chukwuebuka Ogubuike, have been arrested for robbing a man of N250,000 and raping his housemaid at Umugbsi, #Aba, #AbiaState.

Recalling the operation, Uzoma said: “When we got to a particular compound, we met the doors open. We entered and met the man, his wife and their maid. We pointed our gun at him and asked for money, his phones and gold jewellery. .

He gave us N250,000 in cash and brought out all his gold jewellery. He cooperated because we threatened to kill him. I don’t know what came over me, but I raped his housemaid. .

I also wanted to rape his wife, but I left her because she was a nursing mother. After the operation, I got a Samsung phone and the sum of N100, 000. I didn’t bother about the gold. It was after I had been arrested that I learned the jewellery was worth N4.4million.” .

Uzoma, a trader, further added: “I sell clothes and foot wears at Ojota Market in Lagos State. I used to buy clothes at Ariaria Market, in Aba.”

A man was caught in the early hours of today inside the room of a student of the Ekiti State University, while trying to rape her.

The suspect who identified himself as Abraham, had gained access to the room around 1:30am but the lady narrowly escaped and called for help.

Abraham was subsequently nabbed, beaten before being handed over to the school’s security operatives.
