A policewoman with the Lagos State Police Command identified simply as Yemisi is in the eye of the storm after a housewife, Atinuke Odeleye, accused her of assault.

City Round learnt that the incident, which occurred on Tuesday evening in the Igando area of the state where the couple resides, marked the height of a running battle between Atinuke and the policewoman.

It was gathered that the mother of two sustained an injury on the forehead in the process.

Our correspondent who spoke with the parties involved in the issue got different accounts of the incident.

In her narrative, Atinuke, 38, said she discovered that her husband, Abiodun Odeleye, was having extra-marital affairs with Yemisi sometime in March 2019 after she saw text messages they exchanged with each other on his phone.

The woman explained that she called Yemisi on the phone and warned her to desist from dating Abiodun, but she ignored her warning.

Atinuke stated, “She started threatening me on the phone. I went to report her at the Igando Police Station on Saturday, September 7. I gave them a picture she and my husband took together. When they called her on the phone, she said she was on duty and promised to come to the station later. I learnt she later went there and told them that she was pregnant for my husband.

“In the evening, she came to my house with a bottle and threatened to kill me. I went back to the police station to report her, but they did not do anything. On Tuesday evening around 10pm, she came to my house again to attack me. She hit me on the forehead with an object and destroyed my phone. I didn’t bother to report the assault to the police because they did not act on my complaint.”

But Yemisi, who spoke to our correspondent on Friday, debunked Atinuke’s allegations against her, claiming that she is Abiodun’s “second wife.”

The policewoman, who is in her late 30s, also denied attacking Atinuke, adding that the woman came to attack her at Abiodun’s brother’s house in Igando.

She said, “Her husband married me as his second wife and I know his family. We have done introduction and I am pregnant for him. Why would I break something on her head? There was a day a relation of our husband called both of us to settle our differences, she slapped me three times there. I didn’t do anything so that people would not say I am using my position as a police officer to cheat her.

“That Tuesday evening, I visited our husband’s elder brother around Igando and she came to attack me there. She wanted to tear my clothes. I didn’t do anything because I am not supposed to fight in public. I was surprised when she said I injured her. Maybe she used something to injure herself to blackmail me. Anywhere she sees me, she wants to fight me but I always avoid her. I didn’t destroy her phone.”

The man at the centre of the crisis, Abiodun, told City Round that Yemisi is his girlfriend, but said she was not pregnant for him.


Abiodun, an estate agent and a road transport union official, said Yemisi had visited him at a shop within his vicinity when his wife saw her.

The 40-year-old man said a fight ensued when Atinuke wanted to snap the policewoman with her phone, adding that his wife’s head hit something during the scuffle.

He said, “She (Yemisi) is not my wife; she is my girlfriend and she is not pregnant for me. We just have to settle everything amicably. She didn’t come to our house that evening as my wife claimed. My wife saw us where we sat and came to sit beside us.

“After some minutes, she stood up to leave and brought out her phone to snap her. She challenged her for snapping her and it led to the fight. It was when they were fighting that my wife’s head hit something. I have warned her (Yemisi) not to come to our vicinity again.”

The spokesperson for the police in the state, DSP Bala Elkana promised to get back to our correspondent with comments on the incident but he had yet to do so as of press time.

Masquerades on rampage attacked a Church, City of Living Grace Chapel, in Idu Uruan, Uruan local government area, Akwa Ibom State, and destroyed the church’s properties, beat up some members and stole the phones of others.

It was gathered that the masquerades, who were purportedly grieved that the pastor of the Church, Apostle Emmanuel Etim, had repeatedly preached against the practice of terrorising the citizens during the Ekpo masquerade festival, were led by a group of touts to attack the Church.

A member of the Church, Ms Mboutidem Sam, who spoke with our correspondent in Uyo said the Church was observing a month long fasting and prayer service when the incident happened.

She said it was possible that the attack was due to the fact that their pastor has repeatedly preached against the fear of Ekpo masquerades and their activities, adding that the masquerades must have decided to physically attack the church as a result of their failed death threats to the church members.

Sam said the masquerades attacked the church twice on the same day. She said at first, some touts entered the church premises and destroyed the speaker outside and put off the generator and later returned in a large number with some masquerades.

According to her, they entered the church and started beating up people, destroyed church properties and in the process many members lost their phones, adding that many people were injured. She said the masquerades also attacked a motorcyclist, who brought a member to the church, and the man ran into the church with blood dripping from his head, causing many members to scamper for safety. She stated that though nobody died, one of the injured persons was rushed to the hospital but has been discharged.

She, howeve,r she said was not aware if the authorities of the church has reported the incident to the Police. “They stole phones from the pastor and some choristers. So many people lost their property.

“The car of one of our pastors was vandalised, that was the only car that was destroyed. People were still coming to Church when the incident happened. The attack would have been very severe than that if the Church was filled,” she stated.

A 40-year-old teacher, Emmanuel David, was on Tuesday brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, charged with sending nude pictures and videos to his 14-year-old student.

David, whose residential address is unknown, however, pleaded not guilty to the one-count charge of sexual harassment.

According to the Prosecutor, ASP Ezekiel Ayorinde, the mathematics teacher committed the offence between Aug. 5 and Aug. 10 at Agege, Lagos.

Ayorinde said that the defendant sexually harassed his student by sending her love messages, pornographic pictures and videos and requesting for her nude pictures and videos through WhatsApp application.

“The defendant, a mathematics teacher, was making advances to his teenage student.

“He asked for her phone number and the girl, who does not have a phone, gave him her mother’s number, unknown to the defendant.

“The defendant started sending love messages and nude pictures, thinking he was chatting with the girl but her mother was reading all his messages.

“When he asked for the girl’s naked pictures and videos, the mother reported the case, and the defendant was arrested,” the prosecutor said.

The alleged offence contravened Section 264 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The section provides for three years’ imprisonment for sexual harassment.

Magistrate B.O. Osunsanmi granted the defendant bail the sum of N200, 000 with two sureties.

Osunsanmi said that the sureties should be gainfully employed and show evidence of two years’ tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

She adjourned the case until Oct. 16 for mention.

The xenophobic attack on Nigerians and other foreigners in South Africa is the major topic of discourse on the lips of everyone due to the recent spate of violent and deadly attacks.

This episode of violence has prompted a flurry of high-level condemnations and criticisms from international bodies and government officials across various countries.

The violence echoes sporadic outbreaks of attacks mainly targeting migrants from other African countries in some of South Africa’s poorest areas.

It should be recalled that in 2008 and 2015, the world was horrified by the savage scenes of xenophobic violence towards African immigrants in South Africa despite the unprecedented support provided by African countries during South Africa’s struggle to end ‘apartheid’.

Prior to 1994, immigrants from different countries faced discrimination and even violence in South Africa.

After majority rule in 1994, contrary to expectations, the incidence of xenophobia increased. Between 2000 and March 2008, at least 67 people died as a result of the incessant xenophobic attacks.

What is ‘xenophobic violence’

Xenophobic violence refers to any act/acts of violence, perpetrated by local communities or groups against an individual or group of individuals, based on the perception that the victim/victims of this violence do not belong to the perpetrators’ community, society or nationality.

The attacks towards foreign nationals or perceived outsiders are often expressed in the forms of murder, assaults, intimidation and harassment.

Such attacks can include arson attacks on non-nationals and/or their property or the looting and robbery of non-nationals’ shops.

These xenophobic attacks occur across all nine provinces of South Africa, while the Western Cape, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Free State, Limpopo, Mpumalanga and the Eastern Cape are mostly affected.

Reason for ‘xenophobic violence’

One of the many reasons advanced by some South Africans for their anger towards black Africans since the xenophobic violence of 2008 and 2015 is that ‘foreigners are taking jobs from indigenes in the country’.

A Pew Research poll conducted in 2018 showed that 62% of South Africans viewed immigrants as a burden on society by taking jobs and social benefits and that 61% of South Africans thought that immigrants were more responsible for crime than other groups.

South Africa’s Legal Obligation to Protect Foreign Nationals

South Africa has ratified numerous international instruments that place an onus on the country to ensure that it provides protection against all forms of discrimination, including xenophobia and xenophobic violence.

In accordance with this legislation, refugees and asylum seekers in South Africa are legally entitled to the same rights as South African citizens, except for the right to vote.

However, with the ongoing situation, the South African Government need to send out a ‘strong message’ to its citizens that ‘hostility towards non-nationals will not acceptable under any circumstances’.

A mother has been accused of forcing two toddlers to have sex with each other so her paedophile boyfriend could watch.

The paedophile, Roberto Oquendo, 38, has been jailed for 50 years earlier.

His girlfriend, Rose Beth Litzky, forced the young children to have sex while she filmed so her boyfriend could watch them.

Litzky, a hotel housekeeper from Florida, was arrested after a search of the couple’s home uncovered a large quantity of sex abuse images shared between the two.

She reportedly took photos and video of the toddlers between October 2014 and September 2016, while she was living in Florida and her boyfriend lived in Virginia.

Online, during that same period, she used social media to paint the picture of a dotingmother, sharing photos of her taking her children to the zoo and the mall.

“Oquendo had used a social media application to engage in live chats with a co-conspirator, Rose Beth Litzky, during which Litzky engaged two female children in sexually explicit conduct for Oquendo’s viewing and sexual gratification,” a press release issued by the United States Department of Justice read.

“Oquendo created screenshots of the visual depictions involving the two girls.”

It is not entirely clear whether the two young girls are her daughters, although Litzky has been identified as a mother of two children. Her relationship to the victims has, however, not been clarified.

During a police interview, she admitted taking hundreds of naked photos and videos of the children that she then sent to Oquendo for his “sexual gratification”.

Oquendo abused the girls in person after moving to Florida to be with Litzky, and took further images of his young victims, some of them described as “sadistic” in nature.

Litzky was this month convicted of conspiracy to produce child pornography and production of child pornography.

She is being held without bond in Seminole County Jail, and will be sentenced on October 15.

Operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) have arrested five persons in connection with the alleged hijacking of a Taxify Toyota Corolla Sports in Lekki, Lagos State.

The suspects, Michael Sosa, 27, Nelson Benson, 24, Idowu Dauda, 30, Owolabi Shobayo aka Daju pa, 29 and Biliaminu Abu alias Gengen, 43, were nabbed in Ijoko and Ota in Ogun State last week for allegedly hijacking and selling a Taxify car in February.

The Nation gathered that they allegedly participated in the selling of the car to a dealer in Republic of Benin for N250,000.

It was learnt that Sosa, in company of Dosumu, now at large, sometime in February converged on Elegushi Beach, Lekki where they hatched the plan to hijack a Taxify car, move it to Ogun State and sell.

Sosa, a suspected ‘yahoo–boy’, after waiting till 10pm, ordered a Taxify ride from Agungi Estate to Lagos Island. In the car with him were Dosumu and Dauda.

The police quoted Sosa as saying: “On Abraham Adesanya Estate, Lekki, I told the driver I wanted to urinate. We alighted. While I pretended to be urinating, Dosumu poured dried pepper on the driver. He screamed and jumped out of the car. He started shouting for help. I got on his seat and drove the car away.

“I drove to the road leading to Alpha Beach where we stopped for some hours because we suspected we were being trailed. At about 4am, I proceeded to Agege, dropping Dosumu at Omole. I picked Benson at Agege Stadium. Nelson was to direct us through the routes that prevented us from encountering the police and to Ijoko.

“At Ijoko, I took the car to Alfa Mouka’s house. He was my spiritualist. I told him the car was stolen. It was at that point we began to source for buyers. We were introduced to Daju pa and Gengen. They are dreaded cultists and notorious criminals in the area. I told them I wanted to sell the car for N300,000. We later discovered that the car had no papers. This made it difficult to sell.

“We got a dealer who asked us to bring it to the Republic of Benin. Gengen and I took it there around 11pm after changing the number plate

“We sold the car for N250,000. We would have sold it at a higher price but for the papers that were not available. I took N190,000. I gave N60,000 to Gengen and N40,000 to Eniba (Dauda) to give Michael. Although, I got to know that it was N30,000 that got to him. Our link to Benin Republic got N13,000. That was how we shared the money.”

Police Commissioner Zubairu Muazu said any criminal who thinks he can escape with nefarious activities perpetrated in Lagos needs to think twice, as the command is at alert and will arrest any criminal in any part of the country.

The suspects have been transferred to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) for further investigations.
