Politics / Aishatu Mohammed: I Married As An Illiterate At 16 – Bauchi Governor's Wife by GistMore1: 6:52am On Nov 10, 2019

I was 16, a stark illiterate, when I married Bauchi gov — Wife

Mrs Aishatu Mohammed, the wife of Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, said on Saturday that she had had no formal education as of the time she married her husband.

Mohammed stated this in Bauchi at the occasion of the “Naija Youth Talk”, Organised by the Bauchi Field Office of the United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF)

“I was 16 years old and a stark illiterate when I married my husband.

“We were 100 girls in our family; none went to school; I only started school after my third child,” she said.

She decried the high rate of illiteracy and early marriage among young girls in the state, blaming the situation on parents who believed formal education for the girl-child was a mere waste of resources.

“We were 100 girls in my family, but none of us had a formal education; I had never been to primary school in my parent’s house.

“This is because our parents never believed in educating the girl-child; I struggled to go to school, but they refused.

“I picked the challenge to be educated from my brothers and after I had my third child, I insisted my husband get me a home teacher.

“That’s how I started and I later went to secondary school. Today I am a graduate of Public Administration from the University of Abuja,” she narrated.

Mohammed who emphasised the importance of educating not only the girl-child but young people in the society, added that such a move would curb crimes and social vices in the society.

She called on relevant government agencies and organisations to ensure that parents and caregivers were adequately sensitised on the need to allow young boys and girls to go to school.

“The crimes in society cannot stop until we give proper education to women and youths in the society.

“So, I call on relevant agencies to go into our communities and sensitise parents to allow their children, particularly the girl-child, to go school,” she advised.

She also admonished young people to go into meaningful ventures that would enable them to become self-reliant, rather than wait for white-collar jobs.

“One of my sons is today a farmer. His father was a former senator, minister and today a governor, yet he is doing farm business.

“Same goes to his sister who is into catering. I always encourage my children to be self-reliant, so I am I challenging all of you here today,” she advised.

Politics / Edo Crisis: Obaseki Sets Condition For Peace Talks by GistMore1: 5:08am On Nov 10, 2019
Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki says the breakaway All Progressive Congress group (Edo Peoples Movement) should declared their intention to return to the fold before the start of any peace talks

EPM co-convener, Henry Idahagbon, earlier in a separate interview told Sunday PUNCH that Obaseki should call for a peace meeting.

But Obaseki, who spoke through his Chief of Staff, Taiwo Akerele, on Saturday, said the EPM was not recognised by the APC constitution.

He said, “EPM members cannot be running to Oshiomhole; its not possible. It means that he is taking sides. As a leader, it is expected that he should give opportunity to all sides and we are ready to go to Oshiomhole when he provides leadership, but those people must first drop the toga of EPM. We cannot talk to them on the basis of their membership of the EPM. I am a loyal partyman. I am loyal to the APC. I am loyal to Buhari, I am loyal to the APC National Leader (Asiwaju Bola Tinubu).”

While acknowledging Idahagbon and Samson Osagie’s contributions to Obaseki’s victory in 2016, Akerele insisted that the EPM was an illegal group.

“If anybody has any issue, they should come out. Has anybody told you that they are against the policies of the government? No. These are our brothers, these are our comrades. I am using this opportunity to call on them. Come let us reason together as the Bible says so that we can iron out issues. Is it Idahagbon? Is it Samson Osagie? Anybody? They are our brothers and we want them to come so that the APC will be one united family and one united party so that together we can campaign for the second term of Obaseki because what we are looking at is how the future generation will be employed.

“There is no crack in the wall of the APC. What has happened is that some people who could not penetrate into the heart of this government decided to form a parallel group which is unknown to the APC constitution. It is an unknown body to the APC constitution. I have been a member of the APC for 12 years. It (the EPM) is unknown to the APC constitution.

He faulted Oshiomhole for role in the crisis, saying it was not good for the party.

Akerele added, “He is our national chairman and former governor of Edo State that is well respected. In fact, we don’t only need him in Edo we need him in Nigeria. We need Oshiomhole as a leader in this country. His wealth of wisdom and experience but he should really be the leader of all.”

The governor’s aide also frowned on the belief that Oshiomhole single-handedly made Obaseki governor.

Akerele said, “The decision to make Obaseki governor was a collective decision; it was not a one-man decision. It is erroneous for anybody to think that it was by one person. If Oshiomhole brought Obaseki and he didn’t scale through the scrutiny, he wouldn’t have sailed through.”

Celebrities / Banky W: I Sang For Armed Robbers Who Robbed Me by GistMore1: 5:50am On Nov 09, 2019
Singer and filmmaker, Bankole Wellington, aka Banky W, has shared a story of his experience with some armed robbers on Lagos Island who asked him to entertain them after robbing him.

He spoke at ‘Monday Night Live’, a programme hosted by a Gospel artiste, Tim Godfrey.

He said, “I recall that after a certain December 31 night ‘crossover’ service, I was on my way to the island after dropping a friend. On getting to where my friends were, I stopped and alighted. The next thing I felt was a slap at my face. Lo and behold, I saw four armed robbers. I opted to give them the key of my rickety car. They slapped me again, saying, ‘Who wants your car’? They told me to move to the back seat of the car while they used my car to rob others. They took my money, jewellery, phone and cap.”

Continuing, he stated, “At one point, one of the armed robbers told the others, ‘Let us take him to Ajah and kill him.’ I started begging them not to kill me. I told them I am a singer. They then asked me to tell them the songs I had recorded. When I mentioned ‘Ebute Metta’ ‘Capable’ and others, the robbers expressed surprise saying, ‘So you are Mr Capable? Sing for us.’ That was the scariest free show I ever did in my life. I had to sing to armed robbers.”

He also spoke about a side of his life people hardly know.

Wellington, who contested to represent Eti-Osa Federal Constituency at the National Assembly early in the year, said, “There was a time I almost joined the army because I was broke and wanted a pay cheque. Which job haven’t I done? I have sold knives and clothes. Every holiday, I used to take any job that gave me a room on campus because I didn’t want to return to my uncle’s house.

“I returned to Nigeria to pursue my passion for music. In the entertainment business, fame comes before fortune. The problem was that all the money I saved from my engineering job, I spent on recording and promoting my songs. At that point, I was living in the attic of my manager’s house. It got so bad that I was borrowing N5, 000 from him to buy airtime and fuel for my car. I struggled to a point that I started doubting my music talent.”

Residents of Ajao Estate in the Isolo area of Lagos State are in mourning following the death of a mother of four, Mrs Chibuzor Balogun.

Chibuzor, whose 14-year-old son, Uche, said was a little above 30 years, died at their residence, No. 2 Raji Aliu Street, off the Airport Road, Ajao Estate, last Wednesday.

According to Uche, his mother had been complaining of general weakness of the body for some days and the family thought that it was a minor thing.

He added that Chibuzor started excreting loose stool and vomiting and it was at this point that they realised it could be something serious.

Uche stated that his father, Isiaka Balogun, aka Gaddafi, rushed his mother to a clinic, where she was placed on certain medication and she was discharged later.

He said when they got back home, her condition worsened, noting that before they could get a vehicle to convey her to hospital, she died.

The teenager stated, “She told me that she was vomiting in the morning after I left for school. When I returned from school in the afternoon, I met her in bed; she looked pale. She told me that she had been excreting loose stool and vomiting. I asked my dad to take her to hospital. And when he took her to hospital, they gave her an injection and he brought her back home.

“She was still experiencing pains as was excreting and vomiting after returning from the hospital. I had to get her 7Up and added some salt to it and gave her to drink to see if it could give her strength since the doctor said it was cholera.

“My dad had to take her to the same hospital but they rejected her. We had to rush her to the General Hospital, Isolo, and when we got there, the doctor examined her and told us that she couldn’t make it. One of our family friends and I had to return home, leaving my father behind.”

Uche added that in the afternoon, he received a call concerning his father’s health and he and some of relatives and friends quickly went to the hospital.

He said they tried to ensure that Isiaka was admitted to the general hospital, but he was rejected by doctors and nurses there.

As a result, they moved him to the Jericho Hospital in Mafoluku, where he was admitted.

Uche added, “He was on the second drip when I noticed that the drip had stopped and he began to breathe heavily.

“Out of apprehension, I called the doctor, who pushed me out of the room and asked me to stay outside.

“Due to their delay in coming out, I went inside to check what had happened. When I asked the doctor again if my dad was breathing, he told me that he couldn’t make it.

“Now we don’t have a mother and a father. We are four boys – the youngest is two, while I am 14. How am I going to take care of these ones?

“This house, which was my grandfather’s house, had been sold. I learnt that my father used part of the money he realised from the sale of this place to build a house at the tollgate area. I don’t know the area. I only know that he did not complete the house; only one part of it has been roofed as I was told."

However, some residents of the estate are worried by the cholera outbreak.

One of the residents, who identified himself simply as Ajala, appealed to the government to come to the aid of the people urgently before death from cholera would spread and become an emergency matter.

Our correspondent, who went round the area, observed the poor sanitation in the compound, where the deceased lived. The house with 14 rooms and shops has only two pit toilets.

One of the tenants, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told our correspondent that they had between now and December to remain in the house as it had been sold.

The Commissioner for Health, Lagos State, Prof. Akin Abayomi, said Chibuzor died of malaria and typhoid, while the diabetic husband died of shock following his wife’s death.

Politics / Harrison Odungwere: In Ogale, We Cook, Bathe With Table Water by GistMore1: 4:24am On Nov 06, 2019
A monarch in the Ogale community, Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State, Chief Harrison Odungwere, said on Tuesday that some residents of his area cook and bathe with bottled and sachet water following the contamination of the groundwater in the area.

Odungwere, who is the paramount ruler of the Mbunmeta community in Ogale, expressed sadness that residents of the area had continually consumed benzene contaminated water due to the absence of potable water in the community.

He, however, called on the Federal Government to provide potable water by industrialising its supply in the area, as private boreholes produced water laced with crude oil.

He said, “I have about 300 bags of sachet water, which we use for cooking and bathing, which will last my family a week. But those who can’t afford bottled or sachet water still drink, bathe and cook with the contaminated water.

“Our community is heavily impacted and polluted by hydrocarbons for the past 15 years or thereabouts.

“The Ogale people have been drinking highly polluted water and suffering until when the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project came up and started supplying potable water with tankers, which was a big relief that time until that programme failed.”

Odungwere added that though the Niger Delta Development Commission had dug one borehole in the area, where the residents access clean water, the supply was inadequate for the people.

“The NDDC has dug one borehole somewhere in our community for people go to fetch water, but it is not enough. We need an industrialised water supply system that will be connected to people’s homes in our community,” he stressed.

Crime / 25-year-old Nigerian Migrant Dies After Starting Fire In A Tent In Calais by GistMore1: 11:07pm On Nov 05, 2019
25-year-old Nigerian man was found dead in his tent in Calais, northern France after lighting a fire to cook a meal and keep warm.

Police in Pas-de-Calais confirmed that the man had died from intoxication from smoke fumes on Friday and said an autopsy would take place. The man was the third migrant or refugee to die in Calais this year.

NGOs and refugee aid groups working in Calais confirmed that the man died of smoke inhalation after making a small fire in his tent “in order to cook and warm up”.

Francois Guennoc, vice-president of the Auberge des Migrants in Calais said that the man’s death was “symbolic"

“This death is really symbolic at a time where the local authorities have sought to remove migrants as well as the volunteers who help them from the town centre for supposed reasons of public order,” said Guennoc.
