The Lekki Concession Company Limited has handed over 18 toll collectors, suspected to have defrauded it of huge sums of money, to the police for investigation. Mubashiru Hassan, the Managing Director, LCC who made this known in a statement on Wednesday, July 31st said the affected employees took advantage of the operational hitches, which occurred in January, to perpetrate some sharp practices at the Admiralty Circle Toll Plaza in Lekki, Lagos. According to him, following the resolution of the hitches in June, the operations department carried out an audit and discovered some anomalies in transactions, such as the abuse of the transaction unblock key and non-adherence to vehicle processing procedures, including the receipt of money from customers without processing the vehicles and non-issuance of toll receipts to customers after receiving payment. “Other offences were sabotage of toll equipment; non-adherence to the controls and operating procedures, including the use of personal phones in the booths; processing of vehicles on another person’s profile; and recording and accounting for low traffic numbers during peak periods,” the statement said. Hassan was quoted as saying that consequent upon the discovery, the affected workers were queried and a disciplinary committee was set up to look into the matter. He stated, “Out of the 56 suspected staff members, six were exonerated and 18 were indicted in the first batch and handed over to the police on July 11, 2019, for further investigation, while the remaining 32 are still undergoing internal questioning before decisive action will be taken against them in line with the disciplinary policies of the company. The LCC management will never tolerate any fraudulent act and will handle such behaviour decisively.” He described the affected workers as unrepentant as “they have not seen what they have done as a criminal offence. Instead, they have gone on the social media to malign the competence and character of the management staff, especially the managing director and managers in the operations department, who investigated and unravelled the fraudulent act,” Hassan stated. Abductors of Samson Siasia’s mother, Mrs Beauty Ogere Siasia, have reduced their demand for the release of the 79-year-old woman to N50million from initial N70million. Samson Siasia, a former Super Eagles striker and coach, and his family were understood to have pleaded with his mother’s abductors to accept N500, 000, explaining he has been out of a job for some time now. The 79-year-old Beauty Ogere Siasia was kidnapped 16 days ago alongside 65-year-old Florence Donana and her 17-year old granddaughter. The victims were taken away from their Odoni community, in Sagbama Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, on July 15 at about 2 a.m. Siasia, however, begged the kidnappers to set his aged mother free unconditionally saying he was out of the job and had no such money to pay them. “The kidnappers have reduced the ransom from N70m to N50m without consideration to the health of the woman. The family offered to pay N500,000 to secure the freedom of the woman but the kidnappers rebuffed the offer saying it was too small,” a family member said. The family member raised concerns over the health of Ogere given the rainy season and extremely cold weather. “We are begging the abductors to set our mother free. We don’t have the kind of money they are asking for. They should please respect the age of the woman and release her,” he appealed. The Bayelsa State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Butswat Asinim, assured that the police were working seriously on the matter but the whereabouts of the victims remain unknown. A Makurdi Magistrates’ Court has ordered 10 men who allegedly attacked a police station in Ado Local Government Area of Benue State to be remanded in prison pending legal advice. The magistrate, Ms Rose Iyorshe, did not take the plea of the suspects, but remanded them in the Makurdi Medium Prisons. The police preferred against the suspects four counts of criminal conspiracy, trespass, attempt to commit culpable homicide, mischief and an act of terrorism. Iyorshe, who did not take their pleas for want of jurisdiction, ordered the police to duplicate the case file and send it back to the Benue Director of Public Prosecutions for legal advice. She adjourned the case until August 26 for further mention. Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, Insp. Veronica Shaagee had told the court that the case was transferred from the Divisional Police Headquarters, Ado Local Government, to State Criminal Investigation Department, Makurdi, through letter No. 3100/BNS/ADO/VOL.T/ dated July 24, 2019. Shaagee said that on July 20, some group of youths numbering over 200, led 20 masquerades “Aketakpa” from Igumale town to the Divisional Police Station, Ado, armed with weapons, and attacked the station. The group, she alleged, armed themselves with cutlasses, sticks, stones, and other dangerous weapons, attacked policemen at the station and inflicted grievous injuries on Sgt Gabriel Adole, PC Joseph Jato and PC Patrick Lawal. She alleged that the hoodlums also damaged one Toyota Hilux van with registration No. DW 348 EKY valued at N3m. She prayed the court for more time to enable the police to complete investigations in the matter. She said the offence contravened the provisions of sections 97, 349, 231 and 329 of Penal Code Laws of Benue State 2004 and Sections 100 of abduction, kidnapping, hostage-taking, secret cult and similar activities (Prohibition) Law of Benue State 2017. GistMore.com Tayo Faniran was assaulted and strangled by South African police officers this morning July 25th , while driving to a meeting for a discussion about his brand. The assault incident was captured in an Instagram Live video, and it ensued from his refusal to ride in the police car to the police station after denying access for a search on his phone. One of police officers called in for backup and stated they will "bundle" the former Big Brother Africa housemate to the police station by force. In response, Tayo stated that it was the xenophobic act him and other Nigerians have been complaining of. He asked if the South African policemen could stop other cars and do that such, but got no response for that. Following his insistence on riding to the police station in his own car and refusal to turn off the Instagram Live recording, Tayo Faniran was assaulted and strangled by the South African policemen.
