In a statement today, the Shoprite Group strongly condemned any kind of violence and intimidation against the citizens and businesses of countries on the African continent and anywhere in the world.

The retailer is highly concerned about the acts of xenophobic violence against foreign nationals that sporadically flare up and the resultant rhetoric of intolerance that is levelled against foreigners and the platform this creates for criminals to exploit it.

As a company with deep African roots who employs thousands of African nationals and works to bring affordable prices to consumers in 15 countries on the continent, we would like to see an end to xenophobia across the continent.

Several stores in South Africa, Nigeria and Zambia are today unable to open due to protest action and extensive damage has been done to several supermarkets over the past 24 hours, impacting the lives of millions of law abiding people.

“We remain committed to engage with Government, industry and consumer groups so that decisive action is taken against those involved in violent crimes and intimidation against foreign nationals as well as to convey our strong position against xenophobia,” the Group said.

A 56-year old man, Akpan Effiong, has been arrested in Lagos and charged before the Court for sexually assaulting a minor by inserting his finger into the private part of a 7-year old girl.

Source reports that the incident happened at Alafia Street, Iyana Ipaja area of Lagos, where they reside.

It was gathered that Effiong, who is married with children, lured the victim into his apartment in the afternoon when his members of his family were not around, removed her pant and inserted his finger into her private part.

When he had satisfied himself, he allowed the victim to go but warned her never to tell anyone what happened.
However, the victim informed her mother about what happened when they were not around; how Effiong molested her.
The matter was reported to the Police at Family Support Unit, Agege Division. He was then arrested and detained at the Police Station for investigation.
During interrogation, he denied but the victim was brought before him and she narrated how he molested her in the presence of the Police.
The Police found him culpable and charged him before the Ogba Magistrates Court for sexually assaulting the minor.

He pleaded not guilty.
The prosecutor, Mr. Christopher John, asked the Court to give a date for hearing to enable the Police to prove that he actually committed the offence.
Thus, the Presiding Magistrate, Mr. P.E Nwaka, granted him bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.
He was remanded in prison custody pending when he will perfect his bail conditions. The matter was adjourned till 3rd October, 2019.

Source gathered that Effiong escaped the charge for defilement, which would have attracted several years of imprisonment, because he only used his finger on the victim.

In a new viral video shared, a brave woman filled with confidence received accolades from social media users for holding a live Python after swallowing a goat in Ikorodu, Lagos. Gistmore reports

The fearless woman is not borthered she's holding one of the most deadliest and dangerous animal on the planet.

The men and other residents were scared to get close to the Python only the bold woman could hold on to it.

Speaking in their Yoruba dialect, the Python swallowed a goat and caught by the residents.

Some members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in Lagos State on Wednesday marched on the premises of the Lagos State House of Assembly in Alausa, Ikeja.

They protested the emergence of Musiliu Akinsanya aka MC Oluomo as the chairman of the caretaker committee of the union.

The protesters carried placards with inscriptions such as: ‘We say yes to union constitution, we want the government to save our soul in Lagos’, ‘We say no to Lagos NURTW, we say no to imposition’, ‘We say no to self-imposition as NURTW Lagos State chairman’, ‘We say no to thuggery in Lagos NURTW’, and others.

NURTW National President Alhaji Tajudeen Ibikunle Baruwa appointed MC Oluomo as the caretaker chairman, Lagos State chapter of the union.

It was gathered that Baruwa issued a statement on Tuesday dissolving the executive committee of the state chapter hitherto headed by Comrade Tajudeen Agbede, who is now Baruwa’s deputy, and replaced it with an 18- member caretaker committee led by MC Oluomo.

MC Oluomo, the chairman of Oshodi branch, Lagos chapter of the union, is one of those contesting for the Lagos State NURTW chairmanship.

Speaking during the protest, one of the leaders, the Chairman of Ojuwoye NURTW branch, Ademola Olanrewaju, alleged that MC Oluomo’s emergence would cause chaos.

“A meeting was held yesterday and after the meeting, it was decided that MC Oluomo should emerge as the chairman of the caretaker committee.

“Directly or indirectly, they are trying to impose him on us because there was fracas in Abuja and both parties were supposed to be dealt with, but MC Oluomo’s group was exonerated.

“What we are agitating for is that we don’t want MC’s government in Lagos State.

“Lagos State has given us the little it can in terms of empowerment, by giving us what to eat.”

At press time, no government official had addressed the protesters.

Bala Elkana, the spokesperson of the Lagos state police command, has denied online reports that Bobrisky was arrested after the venue of his birthday was shutdown.

When asked by source to confirm if the popular Crossdresser was arrested, Bala said

He however declined to speak on why the party was disrupted. According to him, investigations is ongoing and he will make the outcome of the investigation public soon.

World karate, continental and SA boxing female champion, Leighandre Jegels, was shot and killed on Friday, by her police officer boyfriend, whom she had a protection order against.

Her mother was also shot in the attack and was rushed to an East London hospital. The 37-year-old boyfriend was later arrested after the hired white Mercedes-Benz he had been driving was involved in an accident. .

One person was also killed in the accident while four others were injured. Jegels and the accused lived together in Cove Rock until she obtained a protection order against him.

The South African boxer did report allegations of domestic violence against him. Jegels had been training for her ring return against Siphosethu Nxazonke in a junior-bantamweight non-title clash in Mthatha on October 2.

A royal grand funeral concert was held on Friday August 30, in honor of late Ivorien entertainer DJ Arafat at the 35,000-capacity Felix Houphouet-Boigny stadium.

The event in which A-list African stars such as Davido, Sidiki Diabate, Fally Ipupa and Serge Beynaud performed in, had some happy and teary moments. The coffin of the “coupe-decale” singer who was conferred with the national order of cultural merit for “his immense contribution to the artistic radiance” of Ivory Coast before the grand send-off, was placed in the middle of the stadium as his fans paid their last respect.

Recall we reported that DJ Arafat died at the age of 33 on August 12, after a motorbike crash in Ivory Coast’s main city Abidjan.
