The United Nations (UN) says large number of political parties participating in elections pose great challenge in West Africa and the Sahel. Special Representative of the UN Secretary General for West Africa and Sahel, Mr Mohamed Ibn Chambas stated this during his visit to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Thursday in Abuja.

Chambas, who is also and Head of the UN Office for West Africa, said it is important to start looking into the number of political parties and their mode of registration within the sub-region. The UN official said the large number is a challenge for electorate to make informed decisions during elections; especially in countries were many people are illiterates.

Chambas said that the UN would be happy to work with INEC in its plan to review the 2019 general elections to address the issue and some other challenges. “We came here seeking to be part of that structure conversation moving forward. We will be particularly interested in a number of issues which INEC chairman has already identified. “Issues such as political parties- number, mode of registration, internal democracy, accreditation of party agents, etc.

“The number of political parties in certain elections in West Africa Sahel sub-region has posed a challenge recently. Not only here in Nigeria. We need to look into the number of political parties, their mode of registration etc. “Recently in Senegal this same challenge was faced and they are  now trying to address it. “Next door in Benin Republic,  they were confronted with 249 registered political parties. They are also finding how to handle this.

“In the last election in Nigeria,  many of you will recall that there were 73 presidential candidates and we have more political parties. “Many people have even referred to the ballot paper as table prof. on the account of its length and breath,”  the convoy said. Chambas said that the UN would also be interested in engaging INEC on issue of inclusiveness, involving participation of women, youths, and persons living with disabilities in elective offices in particular, and electoral process in general.

Chambas, who also commended the peaceful inauguration of the 9th National Assembly, also stressed the need for a great country such as Nigeria to improve on gender representation in both chambers of the assembly. Chambas said that his visit was to see how to strengthen the institutional relationship between UN and INEC, not just during elections but off election season. He said the UN is keen in finding out how it could  be helpful, supportive and be part of the process that would strengthen the capacity of INEC to better deliver in future elections.

“For us it is very clear to us, if we are talking on consolidation of democracy, stability, development of this country, they all start with being able to deliver peaceful, credible elections that have the confidence of the majority of Nigerians. “It is known that a stable Nigeria democracy, prosperous Nigeria is good for West Africa and for all Africa.

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) on Thursday said it distributed about 8,000 bags of rice to orphanages and Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Calabar, Cross River recently.   The Public Relations Officer of the service, Mr Joseph Attah disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja on Thursday.

Attah said apart from bags of rice, used clothing and vegetable oil were also distributed to the beneficiaries.   According to him, the gesture is a directive from the Federal Government to distribute seized items to IDPs and orphanages.

“We started from the North-East, we distributed similar items in Zone A, that is South-West, we did the same thing in the North-West and some parts of North-Central, which is Zone B.

“We are currently in Zone C comprises of South -South and South-East states of the country,” he said.   Attah said that Imo and Enugu states would be the next to receive such items for IDPs and orphanages, while the committee would round up the distribution in the zone at Port-Harcourt.   He explained that for any orphanage to benefit in the disbursement it must produce a certificate of registration by Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC).

The Czech Republic has assured the Nigerian Army of its readiness to continue to supply its weaponry need to combat terrorism and other security challenges in the country. The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has donated some relief materials to victims of the Kajuru attacks in Kaduna State, Mr Isaiah Chinoko, the North-West Zonal Coordinator of NEMA said.

Chinoko, while handing over the materials to the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) for onward distribution to the victims, said “the gesture is not compensation for the loss of lives and property but a token to cushion the effects of the crisis’’.

He apologised for the lateness of the donation, saying however that it was a“pre-assessment” relief assistance. The Coordinator assured that the agency will immediately embark on full assessment of the damages to ensure that affected persons get relief to go back to their homes.

Some of the items distributed to the victims include bags of rice, maize, cartons of tomato paste, bags of sugar, mats, Toiletries, mosquito nets, and clothes.   Yau Abdulahi, SEMA Director, Disaster and Relief Management, who received the items on behalf of the victims, applauded NEMA for the donation.

He said that there are cases of internally displaced persons also at Maraban Jos and Kauru Local Government Area who will also benefit from the relief items when distributed.    Ruth Marcus, Director, Education and Social Development, Kajuru LGA, said that LGA had received assistance in the past from SEMA, NEMA and other donors which were distributed to some of the victims and expressed the hope that they had all settled in their homes.

She said that with tolerance and peace, there would have been no need for the relief materials.   “Kajuru has not seen any infrastructural development in years instead money is spent on hospital bills and security.”   She called on affected persons who have received some relief items to go back to their homes and farms as the raining season  has began.
