Operatives of the Abuja Head Office of EFCC have apprehended seven internet fraudsters at the Sunshine Estate, Gwarinpa. They are: Asuquo Happiness, Agboje Lucky, Emmanuel Ochuko Okume, Lucky Ijire, Karo Ijire, Chinaka Chijoke Promise and Ibrahim Adiat.

The suspects, who were arrested on June 11, 2019, had in their possession a Toyota Camry 2018 and a Toyota Corolla, as well as mobile phones. Investigations into their nefarious activities, which spanned months, revealed that they specialized in stealing people’s identities on social media, particularly FaceBook and Instagram. They then use the stolen identities to create fake profiles, using same to establish fraudulent relationships, with the aim of defrauding their victims.

Some of the aliases used to perpetrate online fraud, include, James Bord, Tom Clanson, Paul Hanson, Clinton Maher, Richard Jordan and David Morgan. One of them uses phishing as his modus operandi where he sends out bulk messages and malware with viruses, which when the target clicks on the message, they are able to gain access into their victim’s information. Another claims he goes to the “dark web” to buy hacked logins to look for any business transaction and double cross the transaction using another account.

One of the suspects confessed to creating over 20 social media accounts. They further confessed to having at various times made $5,479, $4,900, $1,500, $2,500, $7,000, $27,000, which were received through Western Union, Bitcoin, exchangers, and through Nigerians based outside the country, who have offshore accounts.

Three Nigerians, who are residing in Mumbai, India’s largest city, have been arrested by the police in India for alleged cybercrime, according to a report published by The Times of India. The report revealed that the Nigerians and four others were arrested for hacking into over 2,000 bank accounts. The suspects are Idrish D’Costa, Sinedu Christopher, Ifaain Odhu (all Nigerians); Irfan A Dehmukh, Tabiz Deshmukh,Rajesh Gaikwad, and Nizamuddin Shaikh, with the report saying investigation on the issue commenced after a city-based doctor, Tejas Shah, complained that over Rs 2 lakh were transferred from his account.

The Indian assistant commissioner of police, J M Yadav, who disclosed this, said the accused were arrested on Saturday by the Ahmedabad City Police Department for hacking into over 2,000 bank accounts and transferring rupees after creating a fake webpage of the Income Tax Department. According to him, they lured victims across the country by promising income tax (IT) refunds. The police boss further said the seven accused allegedly targeted 4,727 people across India, of which over 2,500 were duped. “They first sent a web link to the victim through SMS, promising to get IT to refund. When the victim clicked the link he was directed to a `phishing’ page (a fake webpage) resembling the webpage of the IT Department.

“After the victim filled in the name of his bank, he was directed to a fake webpage of the bank where he was asked to fill in all the details of his bank account, “The victim was then sent a link of a mobile app as the last stage of getting a refund, which, when downloaded, enabled the fraudsters to hack into the victim’s mobile phone. “Which was then used to obtain the password for net banking. Then the money was transferred from his account to a dummy account,” he said.

A 39-year-old suspect, Taiwo Salami, who was among a gang which hypnotised and robbed a woman of N1.4 in Ibadan, Oyo State, has revealed how he spent his share of the loot. Salami said he bought a Toyota Camry car and established a business for his wife.

He said: “The two suspects were arrested around Eleyele area of Ibadan on June 7, 2019 for hypnotising Miss Mary Ajayi and collecting the cash sum of N1,400,000 from her. On May 6, 2019, about 11.30a.m, Mary Ajayi was sent to deposit a cash of N1.4 million into Access Bank, Dugbe, Ibadan by her boss, Chioma Nwali, a businessman at Oke Padre area of Ibadan. On her way to the bank, she was stopped by Salami, who spoke to her, in the process, he allegedly hypnotised her.

“She immediately lost her senses. She was thereafter taken to an uncompleted building at Inalehinde area of Ibadan, where the cash of N1.4 million was collected from her. The suspects, after successfully luring their victim into the uncompleted building and collecting the huge sum of money from her, tied her up with a white cloth and inflicted several injuries on her body. They later locked her up for three days, before she was later rescued and taken to hospital for medical treatment.”

Salami said: “I bought a Toyota Camry ‘Pencil’ car with part of the money we collected from the victim. I also set up slippers and sandals business for my wife. I gave N200,000 to my brother, Kamorudeen, who is always with me. He used to assist me every time I have an assignment.” Exhibits recovered from the suspects are some rubber slippers and sandals and a Toyota Camry car marked OYO BDJ 53 KU.

A lady got more than she bargained for, last week, at the #Ikota shopping mall, as she was brutalized by a hair vendor for complaining about a “bad” hair she bought from her.

According to the victim, the vendor, who owns Instagram page “chiquitas_hairs,” colluded with her workers to assault her.

Trouble allegedly started after she bought a N75k worth of hair from her, online, on Thursday, only to receive something different.

The client immediately notified the seller, adding that she would be at her shop, the following day, to replace the product. .

However, when she got there, things got heated up and she ended up being beaten seriously.
