The house of representatives has asked the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) not to allow Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State "mislead" them on the infectious disease bill.



LIB reported yesterday that Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) asked the national assembly to suspend the infectious disease bill and to give room for consultations with state governments and other stakeholders. The Governors also disclosed that they were briefed about the bill by the Vice Chairman of the forum, Aminu Tambuwal during a virtual meeting.



However reacting to the statement from the forum, the house of representatives claimed that Tambuwal's position on the infectious disease bill is influenced by his “personal and partisan opposition” to the emergence of the current house leadership under Femi Gbajabiamila.



In the statement released by the house of representatives' spokesperson Benjamin Kalu on Thursday May 14, the Governors were told that their opinion will be welcomed by lawmakers. They were however reminded that the role of the national assembly in constitution amendment, is not subject of concurrence of state houses of assembly or state governors.



The statement reads;



“It is rather surprising that the NGF, in arriving at its decision, relied on “an update from the Governor of Sokoto State,” who, apart from being a lawyer, is a former Speaker and an ex-ranking member of the House, who should know better and guide the Forum accordingly.

“We assume that his position was informed by his well-known personal and partisan opposition to the emergence of the current leadership of the house considering his obvious stance in 2015 and 2019 .

“Unlike in a constitution amendment matter, where state houses of assembly have a defined constitutional role to play in effecting any review to it, Bills such as the Control of Infectious Diseases are not by our constitution subject of concurrence of state houses of assembly or state governors. We do believe that our respected Governors are aware of this lawful processes of legislation and should not be misguided by a biased position of a former speaker .

“Notwithstanding, the House expresses its readiness to work with the Committee raised by the NGF to meet members of the Green Chamber on the Bill. The Governors are our critical stakeholders in nation building, and we understand the importance of working with our Governors at critical moments such as this pandemic period.”

Relaxing coronavirus-induced restrictions globally has left oil producing nations smiling again.

Crude oil prices jumped again on Tuesday, May 5, 2020 as some European, African and Asian countries along with several U.S. states, began easing coronavirus lockdown measures.

“Oil prices moving up nicely as demand begins again!” U.S. President Donald Trump tweeted excitedly.

Coronavirus-induced lockdowns had all but crippled the global oil industry in April, with marketers paying buyers to take the product off them because there was nowhere to store the excess crude that was being pumped.ADVERTISING

The price of a barrel of West Texas Intermediate (WTI), which is the benchmark for US oil, fell to as low as -$37.63 a barrel on April 20.



Brent crude or international oil,which is the benchmark for Nigeria’s Bonny Light, plunged to a low of around $26/barrel at the time and traded for even less as the days wore on.

However, things are beginning to look up again for oil producing nations.

Oil investors are splashing the cash again

WTI crude CLc1 futures are now up 11.2%, or $2.29, at $22.68 per barrel.

Brent crude LCOc1 futures are up 7.2%, or $1.97, at $29.17.

Italy, Spain, Nigeria and India, together with Ohio and other U.S. states, began allowing some people to go back to work and opened up construction sites, parks and libraries, Reuters writes.

Due to these decisions, demand is returning and oil investors are splashing the cash again.

Vehicle traffic in most of the United States, including those yet to lift shelter-in-place orders, has also rebounded, RBC Capital Markets research said in a note.

Swiss bank UBS said the easing of restrictions would help lead to a balance in supply and demand for the oil market in the third quarter and even projected an undersupply by the fourth, forecasting an end-2020 recovery of Brent to $43 per barrel and $55/bbl by mid-2021.

“The outlook for this and next year is turning brighter: demand should be supported by a recovering global economy,” UBS commodities analyst Giovanni Staunovo said.

Still, recovery in the oil market is likely to be slow because the global aviation sector remains closed and international travel restrictions haven’t been lifted.

Australian national carrier Qantas Airways’ (QAN.AX) Chief Executive Alan Joyce said on Tuesday that “international travel demand could take years to return to what it was.”

An Ibadan-based barber, Abdulahi Olabamiji, yesterday told a Mapo Customary Court in Ibadan, Oyo State, that his wife, Yetunde, was wayward and he had caught her making love with men on eight different occasions.

Olabamiji, a resident of the Ojo area, Ibadan, said this in his counter argument while testifying before Chief Ademola Odunade, the president of the court. He alleged that one of Yetunde’s lovers even had the temerity to attend a ceremony involving his own family sometime ago.

“My lord, while Yetunde was deeply in those adulterous atrocities, I called the attention of her parents and other relatives to them, but they kept on prevailing on me to exercise patience with her.

“One day, after Yetunde temporarily abandoned me, I went to visit her parents to discuss with them. I was, however, shocked when I saw Yetunde on the laps of another man in the house.

“What happened at the scene made me conclude that her parents were backing her promiscuous attitude and I lost interest in her completely.

She keeps disgracing me and I don’t want the children to be given to her because she will corrupt them,” the respondent said.

Yetunde, a resident of the Foko area of Ibadan and fashion designer, had filed a petition for divorce citing threat to her life as the major reason why she wanted the court to dissolve the 16-year-old marriage.

She stated that due to her husband’s “troublesome character”, she had been locked up on three separate occasions in a Correctional Centre. She alleged, “My life is not safe in his home because he constantly threatens me with a broken bottle.

Aside, Abdulahi also steals my money. Worse, he often molests my parents by treating them with disdain.” She appealed to the court to give her custody of the children.

Odunade, leading two other arbitrators, Alhaji Suleiman Apanpa and Chief Rafiu Raji, dissolved the marriage “in the interest of peaceful living.”

He awarded custody of the two children produced by the union to Olabamiji and ordered Yetunde to approach the court anytime she desires to meet the children

The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) Pastor Enoch Adeboye has advised intending wives not to marry jobless men.

This is coming less than 24 hours after the clergyman advised his male congregant against marrying ladies who can’t cook.

Adeboye wrote on Twitter: “My sons, don’t marry a lady who cannot cook. She needs to know how to do chores and cook because you cannot afford to be eating out all the time.”

The pastor’s post generated a lot of mixed reactions and many celebrities also waded into the matter to make their stands on the matter.

Adeboye, in another series of tweets on Tuesday, advises women to be filled with the compassion of Jesus, so other people’s interests will be paramount in their heart.

The Oluwo of Iwo in Osun, Oba Abdulrosheed Akanbi, has denied the allegation that he assaulted the Agbowu of Ogbaagba, Oba Dhikrulahi Akinropo, during a peace meeting in the state.

Oba Akanbi, at a press conference on Tuesday in Osogbo, said the allegation was a desperate gang up against him.

The monarch, who denied the trending report of physically assaulting Oba Akinropo, said what happened was a ‘mere altercation and not physical combat.’

Oba Akanbi said what transpired between him and the Ogbaagba monarch was a fallout of a courageous move on his part to put a stop to economic oppression against the downtrodden by kings in his domain.

“I did not punch Agbowu of Ogbaagba, although there was altercation that almost resulted to exchange of blows, but that didn’t happen at all.

“I brought him and other Obas to the police to talk to them on the need to stop selling land that did not belong to them. I am fighting corruption in a traditional way. They are selling a hectares of land at the rate of N60,000, which I’m kicking against.

“I did not touch Agbowu of Ogbaagba, although he was aggressive and we almost had altercation but I did not punch him,” the Iwo monarch said.

The Iwo monarch added he was a peace loving personality.

“If I am that boxing king you people are calling me, I should have done that in Iwo and not in Osogbo. I personally initiated the peace meeting in which I involved the AIG when those kings refused to desist from land grabbing despite my several warnings and advice,” Oba Akanbi said.

Akanbi was alleged to have assaulted Akinropo during a peace meeting at the office of the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 11, Bashir Makama, in Osogbo on Friday.

The state government, however, condemned the incident, describing it as unfortunate and avoidable.

The government in a statement by Mrs Funke Egbemode, the Commissioner for Information and Civic Orientation, said a situation where monarchs engaged in public display of temperament did not edify the revered stools of “our forebears.”

A man took to Facebook to accuse SARS operatives of cutting off his father’s locs for no reason.

Divine Michael Jackson, who lives in Port Harcourt, shared a photo of his father’s hair before it was cut and another photo taken after his long natural locs had been scraped off.

He accused SARS operatives of being responsible and added that they seized the chopped off locs and asked his father to return on Tuesday to collect his hair.
