I totally agree with you that it makes absolute sense to build the 4 or 5 star hotel within the same space. Moreover we can still get a car park of up to 400 to 500 cars there. Which is very decent number car park compared to Abuja ICC and others.

The fact that the Awka ICC can accommodate 10,000 people does not mean they will all come in their own personal cars. It is like a stadium with 50,000 sitting capacity does not need an endless amount of space for 20,000 cars. The stadium may never be filled to its sitting capacity and even when such major events happen, there are always buses to convey delegates.

Additionally, a functional hotel within the compound will help guarantee maintenance of the environment all the time. Unlike if the place is only accessed once in a while to clean it up and prepare it for a major event.

I also heard that a restaurant is planned for the building. Which means if the place isn't maintained in a topnotch and pristine way, the restaurant will lack the type of high end clientele to stay open profitably.

All in all, the government planners should think broadly on how to maintain the place to run profitability even when it's not holding a major international conference every week. Which is highly unlikely to happen. The genius is how to put other facilities in the place to ensure that it's always open for business and does not constitute a financial drain on the state to pay for cleaning and landscapers when its it's not holding a major conference. A private sector 4 or 5 star hotel within the vast compound is a smart way to mitigate all these risks of building a white elephant project that ends up being a drain on the state government rather than a self sustaining income generator.

My state is oil-rich, yet it took us more than 12 years to build a standard airport with a smaller apron and shorter tower, and shorter runway!

As you mentioned, he surprised many (including me) by departing from the usual low-quality projects we have come to associate with southeast state governments. I was also pleasantly surprised that he went for a CAT 9 fire station, ILS systems, and CAT II navigational systems. Anambra is lucky to have someone who is determined to give them a standard facility. I think they should name the airport after him just to say Thank You for giving the state such a wonderful high quality aviation facility.

It's over 6 months, and I have not seen, or read anywhere that The Executive Governor Of Anambra State commissioned any project. 6 straight months!! I expect some oafs, instead of pointing me out to a commissioned project, will start calling their father names, and not me.

What kills them is that they thought the usual shoddy way that southeast governors typically built the worst quality facility in the region would apply here.

The average mentality of a southeast governor is that standard world-class facilities should only be found in Lagos, Abuja or Port Harcourt. While anything in the southeast region should be a village standard facility.

Obiano totally shocked them in this project! Not just that he built a standard dual-carriage accessway as is the standard globally, he built a standard toll gatehouse, water systems, dedicated power access, control tower, terminal building, parking lot for hundreds of cars, and a runway of a whopping 3.7KM! Not to mention ILS and CAT 2 night landing lights, CAT 9 Fire station with truly modern plane crash fire fighting trucks/ equipment, medical facility, and even spaces for MRO and Nigerian airforce base.

They are still dazed how Obiano had the guts and determiation to deliver a truly global standard facility that none of them expected in this clime.
