It has been revealed by sources within the military that the ransom paid by the Federal Government for the release of the Chibok girls despite its denial has been used by Boko Haram to buy powerful weapons.

According to the sources, the recent ransom has contributed to the recent upsurge in the killings and disappearances of soldiers engaged in the fight against the insurgents, senior military sources have revealed.

The military men said despite denials by the Federal Government, money was paid to the sect to secure the release of the abducted girls.

It was learnt that the insurgents demanded for $50m for the release of the girls but about a quarter of the sum was eventually paid.

PUNCH learnt that the Federal Government paid the cash in two currencies – the naira and the CFA Francs to the leaders of the sect to facilitate the release of the girls.

But, the highly-ranked military men who are engaged in the war, and who craved anonymity because they were not authorised to speak for the military authorities, attributed the recent upsurge in the activities of the insurgents to the huge ransom paid for the release of the girls.

Before the current increase in the attacks by the insurgents, it was learnt that the troops of Operation Lafiya Dole, deployed in the North-East, had effectively cut off food and logistics supply to the insurgents.

Some of the sources, who are also commanders at the war front, said that the troops had effectively defeated the Boko Haram members, who were on the run while a good number of them had surrendered and taken to a rehabilitation camp established by the Defence Headquarters in Yola.

“It is unfortunate that in government’s desperation to secure the release of the Chibok girls, it has put our (soldiers’) lives in danger by yielding to the demands of the group to collect a ransom and secure the release of its commanders.”

A 35-year-old man, Mr. Kaduna Enatimi was arrested by Igbogene Vigilance Committee in Yenagoa Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, for allegedly stealing a pot of soup, 12 wraps of fufu and a half basin of garri flour.
The father of two was said to be arrested by the vigilantes about 2am on Thursday while comfortably consuming some of the stolen wraps of fufu and the soup.
The suspected thief, a married man, was said to have confessed that hunger and economic hardship led him to steal the pot of soup and the other food items.
Head of the Igbogene Vigilance Committee, Chief Money Sweet Asomo, said the suspect was caught red handed “doing justice” to the soup and food items stolen from a cafeteria owned by an Akwa Ibom State woman in the area.
It was, however, learnt that the Paramount Ruler of the area, the Obenibe X1 of Epie Kingdom, King Hope Adike, intervened and asked them to parade him (the suspect) round the community with the stolen items as a deterrent to others.
The Paramount ruler later let him go after considering his defence that hunger and hardship made him to steal the items and told him to go sin no more.

President Muhammadu Buhari was the proud recipient of a unique gift of a goat during his just-concluded two-day official visit to Edo State.

According to reports, the goat was presented to Buhari by an elderly woman, Egbon Grace, who is a member of the All Progressives Congress in Ward 7, Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State.

A government official told journalists on the condition of anonymity on Wednesday that the lady said she had longed to meet the President to show her admiration for “his selfless lifestyle and passion to liberate the masses.”

The official said opportunity came for the lady on Monday when Buhari inaugurated the ultra-modern Samuel Ogbemudia College in Benin City.

“Lady Grace braced the odds and came all the way with her surprise gift to Mr. President which she had kept in waiting for the special occasion.

“She tore through the thick crowd, making her way straight to the President who at the time had finished the official engagement and was heading for his waiting car.

“Many in the crowd got emotional seeing the elderly lady pull through the crowd with the goat, determined to make a presentation to the President,” the source said.

The source added that Governor Adams Oshiomhole who noticed the security cordon between the lady and the President, alighted from the President’s convoy to receive the goat on behalf of the President.

He said Grace later had an opportunity to interact briefly with Buhari and the governor.

She was said to have thanked the President for accepting the gift which was handed over to Buhari’s protocol officials.

The House of Representatives has asked the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and the Central Bank of Nigeria to immediately go after the promoters Mavrodi Mondial Moneybox, otherwise known as ‘MMM’ in Nigeria.
