Politics / 100 Militants Invade Ogun Community, Kill 15 by Giyerte(m): 11:28am On Jun 19, 2016
The Imushin community in the Ogijo area of Ogun State has been thrown into mourning after no fewer than 15 residents were reportedly killed on Friday evening by armed men suspected to be militants.

SUNDAY PUNCH learnt that about 100 militants, armed with guns and cutlasses, stormed the community around 11pm on Friday and embarked on a killing spree, killing every resident in sight.
When our correspondent visited the community on Saturday, he saw a few of the corpses which their families were preparing for burial in accordance with Islamic rites.
Among the 15 killed was a technician, Waheed Buhari, aka Yah Alau, who was shot dead in front of his room.
One of his children, Mariam, sustained bullet wounds.

A travel agent, Mr. Oladele Ogundare, was said to be returning home in his car, when the rampaging militants opened fire on his car and killed him.
Another resident, Umoru, who was said to be eating noodles, was chased, hacked and shot to death, along with a friend, Danladi.
A mosque in the community, was reportedly attacked and a Muslim cleric killed.
Two hotels were said to have also been raided and their customers robbed and injured.

More than 25 shops in the community were looted by the militants.
Many of the residents, who spoke with SUNDAY PUNCH, begged not to be identified as the militants had threatened to return to continue the killing.
A resident told our correspondent the militants were suspected to be Ijaw youths involved in pipeline vandalism.
She explained that they were on a revenge mission as some operatives of the State Anti-Robbery Squad had killed two of the vandals earlier on Friday.

She said, “The whole thing began around 4pm on Friday. I was at the backyard of the hotel, cutting some weed when some SARS officers came in. They were shooting and ordering people to stop moving. There was confusion in the hotel.
“The SARS officials did not leave until after three hours. They killed two of the vandals and took away the owner of the hotel, a woman.

“Around 10pm, I went to urinate when I saw so many hoodlums coming from the waterside down the road. They carried sophisticated weapons and when they got here, they started shooting. They blew off the hotel windows and shot people dead. They killed two men here in Lapete village.”
A friend of Waheed, the electrician killed in Oke Muti, said the Ilorin, Kwara State indigene had tried to shut his door when the militants killed him.
Waheed’s corpse was still lying in a room and being prepared for burial when SUNDAY PUNCH visited.

His friend said, “He was going to urinate when the militants started firing. He tried to quickly shut his door, but it did not jam. They opened fire on him at the door step and did not stop until he dropped dead.
“Not satisfied, they entered his room and sprayed everywhere with bullets. Waheed’s child, Mariam, that was in the room was hit. She is still at the hospital.”
He added that the police recovered 15 corpses in the community.

The widow of the travel agent killed in the Ereko area of the community said her husband, Oladele, who worked on Victoria Island, Lagos State, had left for work in his car on Friday morning without any foreboding.
She said, “He gave me money for foodstuffs after dropping me off in front of a bank where I wanted to do a transaction. By 6pm, we spoke and he asked me to prepare rice for him that night.
“By 10pm, I called his line; it rang and he didn’t pick. I tried it again at 12am, still no response. I called his mother by 6am that I had not been able to reach him on his two telephone lines and she promised to call as well. She also couldn’t get to him.
“It was this morning (Saturday) that I saw a crowd of people in my house. They said he was a short distance from home when he was shot dead. I can’t believe this because we have barely spent a year in this community and this has never happened before."
Some customers at the Catcher Hotel were lucky to have escaped with their lives.
However, the hoodlums carted away all the valuables in the hotel and vandalised all the electronic gadgets.
A soldier, who was not in uniform at the time of the attack, said the vandals cut him with a cutlass and smashed bottles on his head.
He said, “I had entered the beer parlour in the hotel when the militants came in. They were about 200. At first, I thought they were having a festival until they ordered all of us to lie flat on the ground.

“They asked for my two phones and when I gave them one, they became angry. One of them cut my head with a machete and followed it with a bottle. I was drenched in blood. The militants had sophisticated weapons that I had never seen before.
“They never asked for money from me and they didn’t search my pocket. If they did, they could have found my ID card and I would have been dead. I wore just a white shirt.”
A disc jockey at the hotel said one of the militants wanted to shoot him dead, but one of them persuaded him against it.
“They were arguing among themselves whether or not to kill me. One said, ‘If you don’t want me to kill him, then let me cut off his leg.’ But his colleague asked him not to. Before I knew it, he had smashed three bottles on my head.

“They went away with my laptop, phones, money and everything I had. They refused to carry away the beers in the hotel. They took only the hard drinks,” he said.
Women in the hotel, who claimed that the militants spent about 30 minutes, said they tortured them with cutlasses and guns.
Efforts to speak with community leaders were abortive as they declined comment.
It was gathered that a community leader had been abducted by the militants a few months ago, after reporting a case against them at a station.

A source said, “The man was in the creek for 40 days. The militants collected N10m from the community before he was released. That is why everybody is afraid to talk. People have started fleeing the community. Two Hausas were killed during this attack and the Hausa community has vowed to fight back.”
A man, who spoke for the Imushin community, pleaded with the government to intervene before the community was completely deserted.
He said, “These people are militants and even the police cannot withstand their firepower. We need help from the government. We will appreciate anything they can do for us.”

The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the attack, but said only three people were killed.
He said, “Around 11pm at Ereko Community, Ogijo, some hoodlums numbering about 100 invaded the community and started shooting sporadically. Bullets hit one Waheed Buhari and his daughter, Mariam. While Buhari died, the daughter is still at the hospital. Two other unidentified corpses were found, making a total of three deaths.
“Information from eyewitnesses showed that the hoodlums were militants and they came from the riverine area. But we have not confirmed this, as investigations are ongoing. We are particularly interested in why they came in such a large number.”

Politics / Rivers Clerics Raise Alarm Over Herdsmen’s Invasion Of Rivers’ Forests by Giyerte(m): 6:20am On Jun 16, 2016
PORT HARCOURT— Clerics in Rivers State have raised alarm, alleging that suspected Fulani herdsmen armed with dangerous weapons have invaded some forests in the state with a view of launching attack on the state.

The clergymen, from different platforms, Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, and Directorate of Religious Freedom and Church Collaboration of Christian Lawyers Fellowship of Nigeria, alleged that suspected herdsmen with arms had invaded communities in the state.

In a statement, yesterday, Chairman of CAN, Rev. Isaac Anyanasikike, stated that the herdsmen were already intimidating land owners in some rural communities of the state and acquiring land for grazing.
Anyanasikike who read the statement on-behalf of CAN and CLASFON, adding that tension was already rising in communities of the state following the presence of the herdsmen.

The clerics urged residents of the state, especially farmers in the rural communities to be vigilant while on their daily businesses in the forests.
He said: “It has come to our knowledge that Fulani herdsmen or cattle rearers have constituted themselves into an embarrassing nuisance in rural communities in the various local government areas of the state where they graze their cattle with impunity on lands and or farms belonging to the natives and accompanied by their propensity for violence and other horrible forms of criminality whenever they are challenged by the land owners.

“That the Fulani herdsmen are still roaming the forests and farmlands in Rivers State with dangerous weapons and other instruments of violence without the security and law enforcement agents doing anything to check this pervasive use of unauthorised or unlicensed arms thereby leaving the lives of the majority of our rural community dwellers at avoidable risk in unacceptable.”

Politics / Buhari Arrives In Nigeria Today After 10-day Medical Trip by Giyerte(m): 4:28am On Jun 16, 2016
Barring any last minute changes in plan, President Muhammadu Buhari is expected back in the country on Thursday (today) from London.

Buhari had penultimate Monday commenced a 10-day holiday and proceeded to London on the same day.
The Presidency had, in a statement, indicated that the President would during the visit to the United Kingdom, see an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist for a persistent ear infection.

The 10-day holiday ended on Wednesday.
A source in the Presidency, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told
The PUNCH on Wednesday that arrangements had been put in place to receive the President, who is due back in the country on Thursday.

“He is expected back on Thursday (today). We are in touch with him. As of today (Wednesday), we have not been told that there is any change in arrangement,” the source said.

The Presidency had, on Monday, released photographs of the visit of the Archbishop of Canterbury, Most Revd, Justin Welby, to Buhari in London.

Welby, who presented a souvenir to the President, was in company with Nigeria-born Secretary-General of Anglican Communion Worldwide, Most Revd. Idowu Fearon.
Buhari had so far embarked on holiday twice this year.

The President had earlier embarked on a six-day holiday between February 5 and 10, 2016.
Like the case of the second visit, Buhari remained in London throughout the first holiday.

He had earlier granted an interview where he said the doctors he had been consulting since the 1970s were based in London.
Buhari had, before leaving the country, written to the National Assembly to inform the federal lawmakers of his medical trip.
He had indicated in the letter that Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo would perform the duties of the President while he would be away.

Meanwhile, the Presidency on Wednesday commended the House of Representatives for giving prompt action to two executive bills that scaled through second reading.
This was contained in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja by the Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters (House of Reps), Alhaji Suleiman Kawu.
“We wish to thank the House of Representatives, under the leadership of Speaker Yakubu Dogara, for passing two of our bills today, June 15, 2016,” Kawu said in the statement.

“One is a Bill for an Act to Provide for the Domestication and Enforcement in Nigeria of the Avoidance of Double Taxation Agreement between the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Kingdom of Spain.

“The other is a Bill for an Act to Provide for the Domestication and Enforcement in Nigeria of the Avoidance of Double Taxation Agreement between the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Republic of South Korea and for Other Related Matters.”

According to the statement, the action has shown that the House is solidly behind the executive on its numerous policies aimed at making Nigeria better.

“We hope you will also pass our other bills that are currently before the House with the same zeal that you passed these two,” the Presidency stated.

Politics / Osun School Uniform Crisis: Religious Battle Enters Physical, Spiritual Realm by Giyerte(m): 4:20am On Jun 16, 2016
O sogbo—The face-off between Christian and Muslim leaders degenerated, yesterday, but the timely intervention of Oluwo of Iwoland, Oba Adewale Akanbi, saved what could have snowballed into major religious crisis as some Christian students of Baptist High School, Adeeke, Iwo for the second day appeared in church robes to attend classes for the day.

In defiance to Governor Rauf Aregbesola’s warning on Tuesday that any student found disobeying school rules and regulations risk expulsion, some students who arrived the school for the day’s lessons in church robes were turned back by security men manning the gate who however allowed female Muslim students who wore hijab as a complement to their uniforms into the school premises.

However, some Christian leaders who initially kept a safe distance watching the unfolding event at this point moved to the gate to ensure that their children also gained access to the school premises.
The Christians eventually gained access into the premises. Muslim leaders who were around the school premises also moved to the gate and a face-off ensued between the two groups.

It was gathered that the paramount ruler of the town, Oba Akanbi, stepped in by personally visiting the school to douse the tension by inviting both the Christian and Muslim leaders to his palace for a meeting.
The battle after a while, turned spiritual as Christians in the state, yesterday, organised an interdenominational prayer where they offered prayers to God to intervene on the issue of hijab and the court ruling.

The prayer rally which was attended by over 200 pastors and thousands of Christian faithful across all denominations in the 30 Local Government Areas of the State including Ife East Area Office was held at Dominion Hall of Osun Baptist Conference, Gbodofon, Osogbo .

The prayer called by the State CAN Chairman, Reverend Dr. Elisha Ogundiya and led by his Vice, Pastor Moses Adedeji Ogundeji, was meant to reject the court ruling on hijab and other alleged islamisation plot by the state government.

Dr Ogundiya told Vanguard that the prayer was also meant to seek for peace from God and to "nullify anti-Kingdom laws and dealings with satanic forces that are tormenting the state for the past few weeks".
Meanwhile, Baptist High School, Iwo where students went to school, yesterday, with various choir and church apparels as well as hijab was condoned-off by the police after it was shut by the state government, as the Christian and Muslim leaders held meetings with the Iwo monarch, Oba Abdulrasheed Adewale Akanbi to find solution to the impasse.

CAN condemns hijab ruling in Osun state
Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, yesterday, expressed disappointment over recent High Court judgment in Osun State on the use of hijab in all schools including missionary schools, describing the development as unfortunate which may send a wrong signal that Osun State Government is clearly favouring one religion over the other.

The meeting which was well attended, had in attendance the National Officers of the Association, all the five Heads of books, the zonal chairmen, the states chairmen and delegates representing the five blocs of the association; Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria (CSN), Christian Council of Nigeria (CCN) Christian Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria/ Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (CPFN/PFN), TEKAN/ECWA, and Organisation of African Instituted Churches

Politics / 5 Things Nigerians Have Learnt From This Economic Crunch by Giyerte(m): 7:23am On Jun 15, 2016
That the Nigerian economy is at a very depressing low at the moment is no longer news . A fall in global oil prices , a weak Naira and increasing inflation means many Nigerians are struggling . In order to survive , Nigerians have come up with a plan and INFORMATION NIGERIA brings them to you here .

1. Cutting your coat according to your coat: Although you really really like eating well made tomato - stew , the scarcity and high cost of tomatoes would just naturally teach you to chill with you concoction jollof or any other cheaper alternative . You just learn naturally to make the available your preferable.

2 . Patience : Gone are the days when you could just wake up and quit your job because of a very annoying boss or colleague or lack of passion . Nowadays , you just chill like a good kid and take all the sh* t because no one can afford to be jobless in this economy.

3 . Postpone your owambe amibition; Yea, you have never marked your birthday and everything within you is asking you to mark it this year or just propose to bae and get married for good. A quick look at the economic status and your bank will just whisper to you to take it one step at a time. After all , there ’ s always next year .

4 . Prudence : This comes into play a lot these days . No matter how much you have at the moment you don ’ t want to be reckless because when you go broke , its kind of difficult getting back in this economy. Getting the best bargain has become the norm everywhere . No to every evil spending.

5 .Prayer : Almost everyone is closer to God now . The average Nigerian commits everything into his hands now . From where the next meal will come from to meeting their ‘helper ’ .

Politics / Itsekiri Accuses N-delta Govs Of Working With Militants by Giyerte(m): 6:23am On Jun 15, 2016
Buhari should lead FG's negotiating team—S-South leaders

By Emma Amaize, Regional Editor, South-South, Egufe Yafugborhi, Perez Brisibe & Akpokona Omafuaire

WARRI —ITSEKIRI ethnic nationality in Delta State, yesterday, accused some serving and former governors in the Niger Delta, of fraternizing with militants to wreak havoc in the region, only to openly and secretly call on the Federal Government to dialogue and drop the criminal charges against them.
Chairman of Warri Study Group, WSG, the intellectual arm of the Itsekiri nation, Mr. Edward Ekpoko, who made the allegation in a statement, urged the Federal Government not to dialogue with Niger Delta Avengers, NDA, or any other militant group.

“Politicians, including an ex-governor of Delta State and militants have continued to use this neglect to blackmail the Federal Government as a reason for the renewed crisis. But who is to be held responsible?”

This came as South-South leaders, who met at Uyo, Akwa-Ibom State, suggested that President Muhammadu Buhari should lead the Federal Government's negotiation team in the proposed dialogue with Niger Delta agitators and stakeholders to reach an acceptable solution to the bombings of oil and gas facilities in the region.

However, Niger Delta activist, Annkio Briggs and other Niger Delta groups, insisted that nothing short of 100 per cent resource control would be acceptable to the region in the dialogue.

According to WSG: “Politicians, especially some governors (both serving and former) and their cronies from the Niger Delta are hands in glove with the militants and are openly and secretly advocating dialogue with them so as to (through them) have criminal charges against them dropped.
“The militants are well known to some of them (governors) to the knowledge of Niger Deltans. Government should keep them under watch. Let us get it right: who are the Avengers? Tompolo has denied them, but do we believe him when they want his account de-frozen? MEND has denied them, they are used by those who created them.

“To dialogue with them is tantamount to open discussion with corrupt politicians from the region that have forced the pathetic conditions of life that now pervade the Niger Delta. All they want is to bargain themselves from investigation and trial,” the group said.
On the attacks, WSG said: “We have watched with consternation the renewed violence in the Niger Delta by the Niger Delta Avengers and its affiliates such as Joint Niger Delta Liberation Front, JNDL. Their criminal acts and violence have left in their trail vandalized oil and gas pipelines, other installations and killing of military personnel deployed to guard these facilities.

Avengers, JNDLF have no comprehensible agenda
“Neither the Niger Delta Avengers nor the Joint Niger Delta Liberation Front has clear agenda. Their incoherent agenda ranged from the desire to cripple the Nigerian economy; unconditional release of Kanu, of the Independent People of Biafra, IPOB, (now standing trial in court for treason) resource control, resumption of academic activities at the Maritime University, Okerenkoko in Warri South West Local Government Area of Delta State to defreezing of Tompolo’s account. How awkward."

Why Buhari should lead peace talks
The leaders, who met at a closed-door “Niger Delta Dialogue” in Uyo, Akwa-Ibom State, convened by AA PeaceWorks, a non-governmental organisation, said, “Dialogue is not a solution in itself to the impasse in the Niger Delta, but can give direction to a meaningful action plan for government and interventionist agencies.”

In a communiqué by former military governor of old Rivers state, HRM Alfred Diete Spiff, who chaired the dialogue, convener, Chief Judith Asuni, of AA PeaceWorks and others, said that President Buhari should personally lead the negotiation, as did his predecessor, former Presidents Umaru Yar’Adua and Olusegun Obasanjo, involving the International community.

Education / Aregbesola Threatens To Expel Students ‘wearing Choir Robes’ To Schools by Giyerte(m): 6:16am On Jun 15, 2016
The Gov. Rauf Aregbesola of Osun on Tuesday said students who wore unauthorised cloths to any public schools in the State would be expelled henceforth.

Aregbesola stated this at the commissioning of St Micheal’s Government Middle School, Ibokun while reacting to different choir robes and garments wore to Baptist High School in Iwo by some Christian students.

He said it was wrong and criminal for a section or group of people to have directed some innocent students to wear choir robes to schools against court’s judgment.
He urged whoever was not satisfied with the judgment to ventilate the grievance through legitimate means rather than trying to cause crises by resorting to self help.
According to him,``Government is not interested in any religion as being speculated. My goal is to improve education standard in the state.’’

Deputy Governor Titilaoye Tomori, who doubles as the Commissioner for Education, said the inauguration of the school had confirmed their mission statement in education.
Tomori said no fewer than 20 elementary, 22 middle and 17 high schools had either been commissioned or were at final stages of commissioning.

State Chairman, Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Mr Felix Awofisayo urged people to pay tax so that government can do more.
Some students of Iwo Baptist High School wore church garments and robes to school on Tuesday in reaction to the court ruling allowing Muslim female students to wear veils (hijab) to schools.

Remember, immediately after Nigeria Independence Yorubaland was immersed in a political turmoil which aggravated to 'Operation Wetie' where human beings were burnt alive alongside their properties. The gladiators were Akintola and Awolowo.
The arson and killing continued until the military boys struck a coup in January 15, 1966.

Read this also:

"By the time the Europeans came, even the Yoruba people, did not even learn how to live with each other, they were fighting and all over the north, they were fighting everywhere, there were tribal wars."
I just remember only recently the Yoruba leaders said they want to break, break from where. The Yoruba are probably the people who economically enjoy Nigeria more than anybody, economically. So why are they going?"

Is political turmoil and Religious clashes the same thing
