Lille expected to step up efforts to sign Jonathan David


Napoli have agreed an initial €60m fee with Lille for Victor Osimhen, with the Nigeria striker set to sign a five-year contract and join the Serie A side in the most expensive transfer deal of the summer so far.

The 21-year-old scored 18 goals in all competitions for Lille before the French season ended prematurely owing to the Covid-19 pandemic and has been linked with several English clubs including Manchester United and Liverpool. But Osimhen, who changed agent last week, looks set to move to Napoli after negotiations between the clubs were completed on Thursday.

It is understood the fee could rise to €81m after a number of performance-related add-ons – €1m more than the African record transfer fee Arsenal paid Lille for the Ivory Coast international Nicolas Pépé last summer. There is also an option to extend Osimhen’s contract by a further year.

Lille are expected to step up their efforts to sign Jonathan David having seen a €25m bid for the Canada striker rejected by Gent this month. The French club have signed the 35-year-old Turkey striker Burak Yilmaz in preparation for Osimhen’s departure and have been told they must pay a Belgian record fee of €30m to secure David.

Leeds United have been promoted to the Premier League after 16 years away.
Their place in the top flight for next season was confirmed by West Brom's 2-1 defeat at Huddersfield Town on Friday.
Argentine Marcelo Bielsa has led the Yorkshire side to promotion in his second season in charge after finishing third in the Championship in 2018-19.
Even allowing for the enforced break because of the coronavirus pandemic, it has been a campaign where Leeds have never really looked like repeating mistakes of previous seasons and they have not been outside the top two since November.
They had seemed set to win promotion last season only for back-to-back defeats by Wigan and Brentford to leave them third behind Yorkshire rivals Sheffield United, before a dramatic 4-3 play-off semi-final defeat by Derby.
After that setback, fans could have been forgiven for fearing the worst about the future of Bielsa and the talented group of players he had assembled.
But he opted to remain with the club and together they have reaped the rewards.

The lowest of lows

It has been a long and often painful journey back to the Premier League for Leeds and their fans, who had seen their team reach the semi-final of the Champions League in 2001.
The club was in a dreadful financial position when they were relegated to the Championship in 2004 and though Kevin Blackwell - the first of 15 managers employed by Leeds since they were last in the top flight - steadied the ship initially and nearly took them back up in 2005-06, they were placed into administration in 2007 and went down to League One.
Worse was to come in the form of a 15-point deduction to start the following campaign and it took them three seasons to eventually win promotion back to the second tier under the management of Simon Grayson.
The revolving door
Grayson eventually made way for Neil Warnock, who lasted just a year before Brian McDermott was brought in.
McDermott came with a good reputation after bringing success to Reading but controversial new owner Massimo Cellino decided he wanted a head coach, not a manager, when he took over in 2014 and appointed former Forest Green boss David Hockaday.
He lasted just six games, as did Hockaday's replacement Darko Milanic.
Neil Redfearn, Uwe Rosler and Steve Evans all quickly came and went before Garry Monk fell just short of getting the team into the play-offs in 2016-17 and promptly left.
Dane Thomas Christiansen started well but faded badly and was replaced by Paul Heckingbottom, who endured a difficult four months in charge.

The appointment of world-renowned coach Bielsa in June 2018, by owner Andrea Radrizzani, brought a new spotlight to the club.
The veteran had been widely praised by Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola and former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino for his techniques and meticulous nature and had worked with Argentina, Chile and Athletic Bilbao during his long career.
Leeds started the 2018-19 season brilliantly with few teams able to cope with their high tempo pressing and incisive passing.
Even allowing for the controversy that occurred in January, when Bielsa admitted he had sent a member of staff to watch all the other clubs in the division train, they seemed set to end their long wait for promotion.
There was to be no denying them in 2019-20 though and they once more find themselves back in football's elite.

Gbajabiamila says he will stand down if House passes bill granting National Assembly leaders immunity


HOUSE of Representatives speaker Hon Femi Gbajabiamila has threatened to resign if members end up passing a resolution granting principal officers of the National Assembly immunity from prosecution during his tenure.

Earlier this week, members of the House approved a bill seeking to give leaders of federal and state legislatures immunity from prosecution. Sponsored by Hon Olusegun Odebunmi, the member representing Ogo-Oluwa/Surulere Federal Constituency in Lagos State, the highly controversial and divisive bill has already passed its second reading and will now go to committee stage.

Tagged the Bill for an Act to Alter Section 308 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 to Extend Immunity to Cover Presiding Officers of Legislative Institutions, it will offer immunity to the four presiding officers of the National Assembly and two from each of the state houses of assemblies in the 36 states. Before the bill was debated, however, Hon Gbajabiamila said he was against it and was not willing to benefit from the privilege should it be eventually passed and assented to.

He stated that he would only support the proposal if it would take effect from 2023 after the end of the tenure of the current leadership. Making his objections clear, Hon Gbajabiamila said that if the bill took effect immediately, he would stand down as speaker of the House.

Hon Gbajabiamila added: “Honourable Odebunmi, before you lead the debate, this bill seeks to confer immunity on presiding officers, correct? I am going to need clarifications on some things here because if this bill is for presiding officers, then, I cannot preside on this bill because there is an inherent conflict of interest.

“But if the bill seeks to confer immunity on subsequent presiding officers, after this assembly, then, perhaps, I may preside. I will suggest that if the bill does not have a futuristic commencement date, we should put a commencement date from 2023, so that I’m not conferred with any kind of immunity.

“That is my suggestion but if you insist that it is supposed to be from this point, moving forward, as soon as the bill is signed, then I will need to step down.”

Hon Odebunmi said: “Extending immunity to the presiding officers of the national and state assemblies is not a means of shielding them from answering any question generated by their actions, or preventing members of the House from exercising their powers of choosing or changing their leaders when required as provided for by the laws but a genuine way of protecting the most sacred institution in a democracy.”

Opposing the bill, Hon Sergius Ogun, said the proposal came at a time when many Nigerians were asking for the immunity being currently enjoyed by leaders of the executive arm of government like the president and governors be removed. Another member, Hon Solomon Bob, said the bill, if passed, would show that the lawmakers were further indifferent to the security challenges facing the country.

Also opposing the bill, minority leader, Hon Ndudi Elumelu, said: “At this time in our nation, what is important is the provision of security and dividends of democracy for our people. Our people are desirous of being well taken care of but outside here, Nigerians are being butchered, they are being killed.

“People can’t even feed themselves and things are very difficult. Just yesterday, in one of the communities that make up my constituency, people were slaughtered.”

Majority Leader, Alhassan Ado-Doguwa, who was visibly angered by the rising opposition to the bill, argued that the lawmakers should not be jittery when legislating on issues affecting them. He said he agreed with some of the issues raised on the controversial bill but warned the lawmakers against being apprehensive when dealing with matters affecting them.

Manchester City banned from European club competitions for two seasons by Uefa

Manchester City have been banned from European club competition in 2020/21 and 2021/22 after being found to have committed "serious breaches" of Uefa's club licensing and financial fair play regulations.
The reigning Premier League champions have also been fined 30m euros (£25m).
The decision is subject to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
Manchester City say they are "disappointed but not surprised" by the "prejudicial" decision and will appeal.
They added in a statement: "The club has always anticipated the ultimate need to seek out an independent body and process to impartially consider the comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence in support of its position.
"In December 2018, the Uefa chief investigator publicly previewed the outcome and sanction he intended to be delivered to Manchester City, before any investigation had even begun.
"The subsequent flawed and consistently leaked Uefa process he oversaw has meant that there was little doubt in the result that he would deliver. The club has formally complained to the Uefa disciplinary body, a complaint which was validated by a CAS ruling.
"Simply put, this is a case initiated by Uefa, prosecuted by Uefa and judged by Uefa. With this prejudicial process now over, the club will pursue an impartial judgment as quickly as possible and will therefore, in the first instance, commence proceedings with the Court of Arbitration for Sport at the earliest opportunity."

IMO Update: Supreme Court Admits Chife Emeka Ihedioha Appeal's for a Review


The Supreme Court has reportedly admitted the appeal filed by the sacked governor of Imo State, Chief Emeka Ihedioha, over the judgement against him on January 14th 2020, that handed over power to Senator Hope Uzodinma who came fourth on the March 9th governorship election in Imo State.
According to Cyril Aririguzo, KSM, who posted the update on social media, he noted that the world super powers such as United States, United Kingdom and European Union, are interested in the case, as they are global leaders who are watching on other countries, would be on ground to monitor the judicial review, to ensure that Nigeria's democracy is not truncated.
Chief Emeka Ihedioha reportedly approached the court on Monday, to file an appeal, for the Supreme Court to review its judgment, which may cause them to reverse the victory of Senator Hope Uzodinma, in the event that, errors are noticed, but if not, Ihedioha may have to take and abide by the judgement.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), is expected to provide the original result sheets, for this review to take place as evidence to clear both parties.
Supreme Court judgement was based on the fact that, Uzodinma's votes were cancelled in about 388 polling units, which was later admitted and added by the court, but INEC did not authenticate if those results were for the APC candidate or genuine before court ruled.
Another ground, in which Ihedioha is challenging Supreme Court to review its judgment is that, Uzodinma was not a validly nominated candidate of the APC, because same Supreme Court validated that Uche Nwosu, son in-law to the former Governor, Rochas Okorocha was the authentic candidate of the APC.
Nigerians are of the opinion that, for Supreme Court to clear and clean the political logjam created as a result of the Imo judgement, there must be a review for posterity sake.
While Ihedioha is pursuing his case at the Supreme Court, many top lawmakers and leaders of his party PDP, have deserted him, and joined his rival Uzodinma in APC.
The State Chairman of his party have also resigned and defected to the 'now' ruling All Progressive Congress (APC).

The incidence coming at the wake of Yoruba States clamoring for security outfits to monitor her roads, cities,villages even her street truly tell us that we need it urgently and strongly.
We need it to safe guard our lives and properties. We need it to be able to sleep at night with our eyes closed,we need it to walk our streets freely,we need it to go to our various farms without fear in our hearts,we need it to travel our roads with peace of mind.
