Governor Hycinth Alia of Benue state Friday donated two billion Naira (₦2 billion) for establishment of the Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH) Makurdi, Ultra Modern Cancer Treatment Centre.
The governor who made the donation while delivering an address at the BSUTH International Health Investment Summit/Scientific Exhibition and endowment fund for establishment of the Cancer Centre, noted that his administration was committed to providing everything necessary for improvement of the quality of health services in Benue.
The event which took place at the Main Auditorium of School of Medical Sciences, Benue State University, Makurdi, had a theme: “Towards Attaining a One Stop Hospita.l”
Governor Alia said new approaches and collective efforts were needed to reverse the ugly trend of cancer which was responsible for over 79,000 deaths and approximately 124,000 cases in Nigeria each year.
The Governor, who said his administration deliberately introduced innovative approaches to increase access to quality healthcare delivery in the state, promised to continue to be upright and prudently utilise available resources at all times for the benefit of Benue people.
He said Cancer which is one of the highest killer diseases in the country has also ravaged Benue and his administration has been working to ensure establishment of a facility that would help tackle the problem in the state.
Earlier, Dr Tolulope Adewale, said Cancer is one of the leading cause of death in Africa, with Nigeria bearing 40 percent of African cancer burden.
He decried the high rate of new cancer cases, noting that 125,000 new cases has been reported with at least 75,000 deaths recorded on a yearly bases.
He said the establishment of an ultra modern Cancer Centre in Benue will help a lot in reducing the menace and solving the challenges associated with travelling long distances to seek medical treatment for the disease.
He said though the decision to establish the Cancer Centre was noble and will help improve health and economic development of the state, it is capital intensive and the proposed five billion naira for establishment of the Cancer centre will not be enough to build it.
According to him, “equipment for treatment of cancer are very expensive and just a single Linear Accelerator device for treatment of the disease is capable of consuming the whole N5 billion.” He also noted that putting in place the infrastructure for a cancer centre is also capital intensive and it will need radiation proof buildings, constant power supply as well as trained staff for effective handling of the machines and treatment of the disease.
Dr Adewale also noted that full government cooperation, donations, Public Private partnership, collaborations with relevant institutions, Non Governmental Organisations NGOs, as well as individuals will help the hospital achieve its dream.
On his part, Eric Liuquin Chairman, Unicure Pharmaceutical Company Ltd, encouraged more engagement and collaboration with China National Nuclear corporation CNNC which is China foremost Nuclear technology enterprises recognised for its leadership in various domains.
The Chairman of the occasion and former Governor of Benue Sen. Gabriel Suswam, said he was humbled and very appreciative of his invitation to the occasion, adding that when it comes to development there is no politics.
Another new front, there will never be peace in that region, this circle of violence will continue till the oppressed people have their freedom.
How can a country that relies so much on america for weapons be looking for trouble everywhere, I only pity the american taxpayers
Israel wants to fight a war with Hamas, Houthi and Hezbollah at the same time knowing fully well that it doesn't have the capacity to do so
The genocidal Zionist regime should stop attacking oil facilities and civilians, US and UK have been striking Houthi for months without killing innocent people.
To those throwing curses and insults at me because of a foreign country that doesn't care about your existence, I pity una
CAIRO, July 20 (Reuters) - The Israeli military said on Saturday that its fighter jets struck Houthi military targets in the area of Hodeidah port in Yemen in response to hundreds of attacks carried out against Israel in recent months.
Al-Masirah TV, the main television news outlet run by Yemen's Houthi movement, reported that the strikes were directed against oil facilities in the port and caused fatalities. Hodeidah residents told Reuters by phone that explosions were heard throughout the city during an intensive bombardment.
On Friday, a long-range Iranian-made drone hit the centre of Tel Aviv in an attack claimed by the Houthi militia and which killed one man and wounded four others, the Israeli military and emergency services said.
"IDF fighter jets struck military targets of the Houthi terrorist regime in the area of the (Hodeidah) port in Yemen in response to the hundreds of attacks carried out against the state of Israel in recent months," Israel's military said.
The Iranian-backed Houthis have stepped up attacks against Israel and Western targets, saying they are acting in solidarity with the Palestinians.
They began attacking Western ships in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden after Israel invaded the Gaza Strip following last year's attack by Hamas militants on southern Israel.
"A brutal Israeli aggression targeted civilian buildings, oil facilities and power station in Hodeidah aiming at pressuring Yemen to stop supporting Gaza... but the attack will only increase our determination, steadfastness, continuity," Mohammed Abdulsalam, the chief negotiator for Houthi movement, said in a statement on X.
Hamas stormed Israeli towns on Oct. 7, killing around 1,200 people and taking more than 250 hostages back to Gaza, according to Israeli tallies. Since then, nearly 39,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israel's assault on the Gaza Strip, according to health authorities in the enclave.
DHAKA, Bangladesh (AP) Police imposed a strict curfew with a “shoot-on-sight” order across Bangladesh as military forces patrolled parts of the capital Saturday after scores were killed and hundreds injured in clashes over the allocation of civil service jobs.
The curfew began at midnight and was relaxed from noon to 2 p.m. for people to run essential errands, and is expected to last until 10 a.m. Sunday, allowing officers to fire on mobs in extreme cases, said lawmaker Obaidul Quader, the general secretary of the ruling Awami League party.
The demonstrations called for mainly by student groups started weeks ago to protest a quota system that reserves up to 30% of government jobs for relatives of veterans who fought in Bangladesh’s war of independence in 1971. Violence erupted Tuesday, with the Daily Prothom Alo newspaper reporting the death of at least 103 people.
Friday was likely to be the deadliest day so far; Somoy TV reported 43 killed, while an Associated Press reporter saw 23 bodies at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital, but it was not immediately clear whether they all died on Friday. On Thursday, 22 others were reported dead as protesting students attempted to “completely shut down” the country.
The United States Embassy in Dhaka said Friday that reports indicated “hundreds to possibly thousands” were injured across Bangladesh. It said the situation was “extremely volatile.”
Bangladeshi authorities haven’t shared any official numbers of those killed and injured.
Officials said the curfew was to quell further violence after police and protesters clashed in the streets and at university campuses in Dhaka and other cities across the South Asian country. Authorities blocked online communications by banning mobile and internet services. Several television news channels also went off the air, and the websites of most local newspapers were down. Meanwhile, some key government websites, including Bangladesh’s central bank and the prime minister’s office, appeared to have been hacked and defaced.
Local media also reported that some 800 inmates fled from a prison in Narsingdi, a district north of the capital, after protesters stormed the facility and set it on fire Friday.
The chaos highlights cracks in Bangladesh’s governance and economy and the frustration of youths who lack good jobs upon graduation. They also represent the biggest challenge to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina since she won a fourth consecutive term in office after January’s elections, boycotted by the main opposition groups.
Protesters argue the quota system is discriminatory and benefits supporters of Hasina, whose Awami League party led the independence movement, saying it should be replaced with a merit-based system. Hasina has defended the quota system, saying that veterans deserve the highest respect for their contributions in the war against Pakistan, regardless of their political affiliation.
Representatives from both sides met late Friday in an attempt to reach a resolution. At least three student leaders were present and demanded the reform of the current quota system, the reopening of student dormitories shut by the police following the clashes and for some university officials to step down after failing to protect campuses from the violence. Law Minister Anisul Huq said late Friday the government was open to discussing their demands.
The main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party has backed the protests, vowing Friday to organize its own demonstrations as many of its supporters joined the students’ protests. However, BNP said in a statement its followers were not responsible for the violence and denied the ruling party’s accusations of using the protests for political gains.
The Awami League and the BNP have often accused each other of fueling political chaos and violence, most recently ahead of the country’s national election, which was marred by a crackdown on several opposition figures. Hasina’s government had accused the opposition party of attempting to disrupt the vote.
In 2018, the government halted the job quotas following mass student protests. But in June, Bangladesh’s High Court nullified that decision and reinstated the quotas after relatives of 1971 veterans filed petitions. The Supreme Court suspended the ruling, pending an appeal hearing, and said in a statement it will take the issue up Sunday.
Hasina has called on protesters to wait for the court’s verdict.
Biden needs to listen to Barack Obama and do the needful before it's too late.
It appears he may not be able to win his re-election with the way things are going, Obama and Nancy pelosi are among the top democrats that truly like him and with both of them urging him to reconsider now means all is not well.
His party won't only lose the white house, there's a possibility of losing both the Senate and the house of representatives and that will be a disaster.
The convicted felon and his party should not be given any chance.
Meanwhile the media should be blamed if Donald trump should win the forthcoming election, they are once again making the mistake of promoting him
cococandy: The problem I have with democrats is that they’ll always expect perfection from their candidate while republicans will stand like a cult behind their raping, criminal incompetent buffoon as long as they get to win. They’ll justify, deny, gaslight, skirt truths and outrightly defend egregious behavior if it suits them.
While democrats are busy picking apart irrelevant imperfections in their candidates. If they stupidly let Trump win this election, it will be the last election America ever holds and I hope they’ll be happy when that happens.
Former US president Barack Obama has told allies that Joe Biden needs to reconsider his reelection bid, the Washington Post reported on Thursday.
Obama believes that Biden’s path to victory has diminished and that the 81-year-old should “seriously consider the viability of his candidacy,” the newspaper said, citing people briefed on his thinking.
It said there was no immediate comment from Obama, who was in office while Biden was vice president from 2009 to 2017 and who remains hugely influential in the Democratic party.
Obama would be the most heavyweight Democrat so far to join a growing chorus in the party calling for Biden to drop out, following a disastrous debate performance against Donald Trump.
Biden, who is isolating with Covid at his beach house, has rejected concerns about his age and fitness and insisted that he is staying in the race for the White House.
Pressure is mounting, though, with Democratic Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries also both reportedly meeting with Biden in recent days to warn that his candidacy threatens his party’s prospects in November’s election.
The 2024 US presidential election is shaping up to be a highly contentious race. Incumbent President Joe Biden is seeking re-election, despite internal and external pressures suggesting he might step aside.
There are ongoing discussions and debates within the Democratic Party about Biden’s candidacy, with some calling for a replacement candidate due to concerns over his electability against former President Donald Trump.
Trump remains a prominent figure in the Republican Party and is actively campaigning for a return to the White House. He continues to face legal challenges, including cases related to his business practices and claims of immunity from prosecution
As the election draws closer, the political landscape is filled with speculation and strategic manoeuvring from both major parties. Key issues, such as immigration, the economy, and social policies, are central to the campaigns, with both candidates vying for voter support in critical battleground states.
The 2024 US presidential election is scheduled to take place on November 5, 2024.
ruggedtimi: Drone warfare is the new thing now...One of the most feared weapon in the ukraine / russia war is the scary sound of a drone. And currently Iran is one of the top Drone manufacturers in the world.
you are right, some of these drones can bypass air defenses to hit their targets
This is hard to believe, technology has changed modern warfare so much, Houthi, Hezbollah and other groups have shown that they have more capability than some countries
Israel should be extremely careful this time and seek for dialogue and peace instead of conflict every now and then
Israel’s military says it is investigating the attack and why the country’s defences failed to intercept the ‘aerial target’.
Yemen’s Houthi group has claimed responsibility for an apparent drone attack on Israel’s Tel Aviv, which killed one person and injured at least 10, according to reports.
A spokesperson for the Houthi armed forces said in a post on social media on Friday that the Iran-aligned group had “targeted ‘Tel Aviv’ in occupied Palestine”.
It claimed that it used a new drone “capable of bypassing interceptor systems and being unable to be detected by radars”.
The Israeli military said it had opened an investigation into the large explosion near the United States embassy office in the city and would determine why the country’s air defence systems were not activated to intercept the “aerial target”.
“We’re talking about a large UAV [Unmanned Aerial Vehicle] that can fly large distances,” a military official told a briefing for journalists following the strike. “We’re not ruling out any possibilities right now.”
Israel’s air force has increased patrols to “protect the country’s skies”, the military said in a post on social media.
Israeli police said the body of a man was found in an apartment close to the explosion and that the circumstances were being investigated.
Footage from the site of the blast showed broken glass strewn across pavements as crowds of onlookers gathered near a building bearing blast marks. The site was sealed off by police tape.
Israeli opposition politician Yair Lapid said the attack was “further proof that this government does not know and cannot give security to the citizens of Israel”.
“Those who lose deterrence in the north and south also lose it in the heart of Tel Aviv. There are no policies, no plans, all public relations and discussions about themselves. They [the government] have to go,” the leader of the centrist Yesh Atid party wrote on X.
The Houthis have repeatedly launched drones and missiles towards Israel and at Israeli-linked shipping in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden in a show of support for Palestinians amid Israel’s war on Gaza.
Until the early morning attack on Friday, all attempts to hit Israel by the Houthis were intercepted by either Israeli defences or Western allies with forces stationed in the region, The Associated Press news agency reported.
Hezbollah in southern Lebanon has also stepped up attacks against military targets in northern Israel, saying they are also acting in solidarity with Palestinians amid Israel’s war on Gaza, which has killed almost 39,000 people.
What's wrong with Argentina, this will damage the country's reputation and reduce the love Africans have been showing them for decades
She said Argentina never had colonies or try to impose their way of life on others, maybe she's right, but the action of the players is unacceptable, she's just trying to defend the indefensible
political leaders, footballers and other celebrities should be careful of what they say
Argentina vice-president Victoria Villarruel has defended Enzo Fernandez after the racism row following the Copa America win. Fernandez was seen singing a racist song aimed at French players and their African roots.
Argentina vice-president Victoria Villarruel has jumped to the defence of Enzo Fernandez after the racism row following the team's Copa America win. A video had started to circulate on social media showing Fernandez and some of his teammates singing a racist targeting French players with African roots. Fernandez would issue an apology after the video had gone viral for the offensive language in the song.
FIFA said that they would launch an investigation into the matter, with Chelsea also holding a separate look into the matter.
Wesley Fofana would also condemn the actions of his Chelsea teammate as well. Now, Villarruel has come out in support of the midfielder on social media.
The Argentina vice-president said that they wouldn't be intimidated by a 'colonalist country' and claimed the South American nation is sovereign and free.
Villarruel offered her full support to Fernandez and told Argentinians to hold their heads up high.
“No colonialist country is going to intimidate us for a song on the pitch or for telling the truths they don’t want to admit,” Villarruel posted on her account on social media.
“Argentina is a sovereign and free country. We never had colonies or second-class citizens. We have never imposed our way of life on anyone."
But neither will we tolerate that they do it to us ... Enzo I support you, (Lionel) Messi, thanks for everything! Argentinians always hold your head up high.
What Fernandez said about the matter
Fernandez apologised for the song and said he was caught in the moment of the celebrations.
"The song included highly offensive language, and there is absolutely no excuse for these words," Fernandez wrote. "I got caught up in the euphoria of our celebrations."
Fernandez will now return to Chelsea and get ready for the pre-season.
SICK CHANT: Argentina chief SACKED after telling Lionel Messi to apologise for racist chants about France
French FA have threatened legal action over Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez's chant
ARGENTINA'S deputy sports minister has been sacked after saying Lionel Messi should apologise for the Argentina squad singing a racist and transphobic chant aimed at France.
Julio Garro was sacked within hours after making the comment on an Argentinian radio station.
Captain Messi was not even on the bus where the shocking incident took place.
Garro told Urbana Play: “I think [Messi] should come out and offer the appropriate apologies, as should the Argentine Football Federation president [Claudio Tapia].”
He added that the incident “leaves Argentina looking bad as a country” and that it would be good to “make an example out of this”.
It came after Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez went live on Instagram while leading the vile chant.
For his suggestion that Messi should apologise on behalf of his national team as club captain, Garro was fired from his post by Argentina's far-right president Javier Milei.
Milei’s official social media account stated: “The Office of the President states that no government has the right to tell the Argentine national team, world champions and double Copa America champions, or any other citizen, what to comment, what to think and what to do.
"That is why Julio Garro ceases to be the under-secretary of sport.”
Milei's social media comment was followed up by Argentina's vice-president Victoria Villarruel saying: "No colonialist country is going to intimidate us for a song on the pitch or for telling the truths they don’t want to admit.
