When I spoke to you less than three months ago we were all enjoying the warmth and fellowship of a family Christmas. Now, this madness of war is once more spreading through the world and our brave country must again prepare itself to survive against great odds.
I have never forgotten the sorrow and the pride I felt as my sister and I huddled around the nursery wireless set listening to my father's inspiring words on that fateful day in 1939. Not for a single moment did I imagine that this solemn and awful duty would one day fall to me.
We all know that the dangers facing us today are greater by far than at any time in our long history. The enemy is not the soldier with his rifle nor even the airman prowling the skies above our cities and towns but the deadly power of abused technology.
But whatever terrors lie in wait for us all the qualities that have helped to keep our freedom intact twice already during this sad century will once more be our strength. My husband and I share with families up and down the land the fear we feel for sons and daughters, husbands and brothers who have left our side to serve their country. My beloved son Andrew is at this moment in action with his unit and we pray continually for his safety and for the safety of all servicemen and women at home and overseas.

No fewer than five people have been reportedly killed by gunmen suspected to be bandits in a fresh attack on Tse Udeghe village of Mbapa council ward of Gwer West Local Government Area of Benue State.
It was learnt that several people were injured in the process when the gunmen in large number allegedly stormed the village at about 4:30pm on Thursday and opened fire on the inhabitants, killing four on the spot.
The gunmen at about 7pm on the same Thursday were said to have blocked the Naka – Makurdi road around Ahume village and opened fire on a vehicle on motion during which one of the occupants was killed, bringing the number of the deaths to five.
A former information officer of Gwer LGA, Francis Ugbede, said the victims of the first attack included a father and his son.
Confirming the incident was the chairman of Gwer West LGA, Mrs Grace Igbabon, who said that she had also donated 10 motorcycles to the military to facilitate security movement in the area.

RUSSIA would face an almost certain defeat in a "bloody" and "grimy" war with Ukraine, a former NATO chief warned.
Captain Gary Tabach, who was chief of staff at NATO's mission in Moscow between 2008 and 2011, said Vladimir Putin faces a "mess" if he invades Ukraine.
The US Navy veteran, who was the first Soviet Union-born officer in the service, said Ukrainians were ready to fight tooth and nail to repel any Russian incursion.
He told The Sun Online: "I think it would be a bloody mess.
"It would be grime because Ukrainians are dug in and they’re equipped with stingers, they are equipped with armour and sniper equipment.
"They’re doing well and they know they have support of the West."
And he added that a free Ukraine keeps Putin up at night as the country - which is increasingly close to the West - was a "haemorrhoid" for Russia as it won't bow down to Moscow.
Captain Tabach said Ukrainians were signing up in their thousands to a local armed legion known as the Territorial Defence.
He said Ukrainian villagers in the country's east are armed to the teeth and have been trained to defend themselves.
"The Russian troops would not get too far in," he told The Sun Online.
"All the Russians want is internal unrest but Ukrainians are known to go partisan, and start fighting guerrilla war.
"That’s what they’ve been doing for centuries. And it will be bloody."
He claims Putin is trying to "unite the Russian speaking world" under one banner and would push on into the Baltic states and central Asia to create a new "Soviet Union" if he's not stopped.
"The only resistance is Ukraine - and that’s what I call a pulsating, bleeding, itching haemorrhoid that we resist his ‘brotherly hugs’ and that’s what doesn’t let him sleep at night."
Though a massive frontal attack by Russian forces may be off the cards for now, Mr Tabach said, it doesn't mean Putin was ditching his plans to capture the Eastern European nation.
Mr Tabach said the Kremlin strongman would try to force the Ukrainians to execute the Minsk Protocol - a peace agreement struck up by Moscow and Kyiv with the help of the West in 2014 that sees the Russian-occupied regions of Donetsk and Luhansk given some political autonomy.
"There is a war that’s going on, it’s just a hybrid war going on," he explained.
"I think the plan was to force Ukrainians to execute the Minsk Agreement, to cause chaos in Ukraine and to cause us war in Ukraine, to cause us a split in society because, you know, that’s Putin’s style.
"That’s what Putin wants. He doesn’t want a frontal attack. It’s not his style - he’s a KGB thug."
He warned Ukrainians should be prepared for Russian "military provocations and terror acts" on their soil in the coming weeks.
The provocations could take the form of "blowing something up, or firing on something to make it look like Ukrainians did it".
He warned of "terror acts" and campaigns of "subversion" consisting of dis-information wars, interrupting Ukraine's economic supply lines, hacking and " bombarding the whole world with what’s wrong with Ukraine and how bad they’re doing".
The warning comes as Russia promised to withdraw some of its troops from the Ukraine border - despite artillery and tanks appearing to remain poised in "attack positions".
Russia's defence ministry said some troops in its military districts near Ukraine are returning to their bases on Tuesday after completing drills.
Military spokesman Major General Igor Konashenkov said: “Units of the Southern and Western military districts, having completed their tasks, have already begun loading onto rail and road transport and today they will begin moving to their military garrisons."
Footage released showed tanks and other armoured vehicles being loaded onto railway flatcars.
The defence ministry said it would use trucks to move some of the military equipment while some troops would march to the barracks on their own.
The apparent movements run counter to urgent warnings from the US and the UK that Russia could invade Ukraine at any time.
Highly-placed intelligence source claimed Russian crack-troops were set invade Ukraine at 1am Wednesday morning.
They said preparations to defend the besieged nation would continue - despite reports Putin was withdrawing some troops from the border.
US intelligence said the most likely time for Putin’s order was 3am (1am UK time).

Russian claimed today to be pulling back around 10,000 troops from its Western and Southern to barracks after military drills.
But around 130,000 remain on Ukraine’s eastern and southern borders with around 40,000 pro-Putin forces in Belarus to the north.
But for Mr Tabach, the Russia's pull-out is nothing short of an elaborate ruse.
Slamming the West's hyped response to the build-up of Russian troops at Ukraine's border, he said: "I think Putin is sitting there and laughing his ass off saying: ‘I didn’t even have to do anything. I didn’t even have to say boom!’ as NATO and all the allies got scared and ran away from Kyiv with their tails between their legs.
"It’s like Hitler, you give him a finger, he’ll take a hand...If you give him something, he’ll take it and he’ll want more.
"These maniacs like Stalin, Hitler, Putin, Pol Pot, they’ll take everything. They want to create their own world."

BRUSSELS, Feb 15 (Reuters) - NATO defence ministers are expected this week to set in motion a plan that could establish four multinational battlegroups in southeastern Europ[/b]e in response to Russia's military build-up in Ukraine, four diplomats said.
Allied ministers meeting on Wednesday and Thursday will decide whether to order their military commanders to draw up plans to deploy [b]battlegroups of some 1,000 troops each to Bulgaria and Romania, and possibly to Slovakia and Hungary.
With NATO meeting as the United States warns of an imminent Russian invasion of Ukraine, diplomats told Reuters that ministers are likely to agree to direct commanders to come up with a detailed plan for the four battlegroups on land.
"There will be a tasking that allows us to escalate but also to de-escalate if Russia pulls back its military," a senior NATO diplomat said, stressing that any new battlegroups would be on top of recent allied offers by Britain, the United States and others of ships and planes to reinforce NATO's eastern flank.
U.S. Ambassador to NATO Julianne Smith told reporters that ministers would discuss "additional enhancements" but declined to give more details. NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said: "We're also going to consider a more long-term adjustment of posture, including considering the battlegroup in Romania."
They spoke as Russia said some troops near Ukraine were returning to their bases after military exercises, easing concerns over a potential invasion. But Stoltenberg also said that while he saw signs for optimism, he had not seen yet seen any sign of de-escalation on the ground. read more
Ukraine is not a NATO member and the alliance is under no treaty obligation to defend it. Reinforcements in the Black Sea would show resolve in the strategically important region, and in countries such as Hungary and Slovakia that border Ukraine.
Any final decision on deployments would come later on, although both France and Bulgaria have offered to lead the battlegroups in Romania and Bulgaria respectively. With Budapest wary of provoking Russia, Hungary could stand up a battalion entirely of its own troops, under NATO command, diplomats said.
'4,000 VS 130,000'
The move would be NATO's biggest shift in force posture since it set up its "Enhanced Forward Presence" battlegroups in Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia and Poland - backed by tanks, air defences and intelligence and surveillance units - in response to Russia's annexation of Crimea in 2014.
Any deployments would go against Moscow's security demands for the alliance to withdraw troops from eastern Europe. But envoys said an increased troop presence of 4,000 troops was not comparable to the estimated 130,000 Russian troops and equipment to the north, east and south of Ukraine.
NATO insists that the battlegroup format used in the Baltics is not a permanent stationing of troops, rather a "persistent" presence of rotating soldiers to serve as a tripwire for a larger response force should Russia invade NATO territory.
A French presidency official said French troops will deploy to Romania only after a NATO decision and that the designing and arming the battlegroups would still take time because allies must come forward to participate. "There will be a debate within the North Atlantic Council and we are basically aiming for a deadline of a few months," the official said.
NATO could also consider a multinational force led by France in Romania that would coordinate allied exercises in eastern Europe and allow troops to flow in and out of the region without establishing a formal presence.
St Petersburg, Russia – When war broke out in Ukraine’s east in 2014, thousands joined volunteer militias to bolster the then-weak Ukrainian army. Among their ranks were Russians, including far-right activists taking up arms against Russia-backed separatists.
And now, as the Russian army amasses on the eastern border, they say they are ready to do it again and fight against their own government.
“The final trigger for me was I knew some people in the military and found out they were in Donetsk, and one of them even invited me to come along. I immediately understood they’d been dispatched there by their superiors,” Nikita Makeev, 37, originally from St Petersburg in Russia, told Al Jazeera from Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv.
“My government was committing a crime on the territory of Ukraine, not with the help of some kind of ‘volunteers’ but regular troops – if one guy I know from the special forces is there, and another guy from another division, then this was clearly an intervention, an undeclared war. And as a citizen of Russia, I didn’t want to be an accomplice to this crime, and I didn’t see the point of joining any anti-war marches in Moscow or Peter[sburg], as my friends had done,” he recalled.
“The decision had been made without us.”
Makeev travelled to the Maidan Square in central Kyiv in July 2014, where he found a booth recruiting for the far-right Azov Battalion. Drawing from football hooligans and members of the radical Social-National Assembly, Azov grew into the best-disciplined and funded of the volunteer paramilitaries, with a logo displaying the Germanic Wolfsangel symbol, commonly associated with neo-Nazis.
Azov, which has been accused of war crimes, has since been incorporated into the regular armed forces and distanced itself from those roots, according to Vyacheslav Likhachev, an expert at the ZMINA Center for Human Rights, though its founders are still using the name for their movement.
“The creators of Azov are still trying to exploit this symbolic capital for political purposes, but this has nothing to do with the activities of the regiment,” Likhachev told Al Jazeera. “Today, these people, associated with the National Corps party, have no control over the unit.”
However, Azov Battalion’s rightist sympathies were considered troubling enough for the United States Congress to bar it from receiving aid in 2018, while the wider Azov movement, which includes the battalion’s veterans, the National Corps party, and street vigilantes remains an active force at the grassroots level, organising, among others, paramilitary training for civilians in case of a Russian attack.
The Azov Battalion took part in the battle over Mariupol in 2014, holding back pro-Russian forces from advancing through the strategic village of Shyrokyne, where Makeev suffered a concussion. Fighting alongside him was fellow Russian Sergei Korotkikh, nom de guerre Botsman (meaning boatswain, or petty officer on a ship).
“In my opinion, the best thing a man can do in his life is go to war, but you can’t really describe it to someone who wasn’t there,” Korotkikh told Al Jazeera, recounting his memories of the war.
“On September 5, 2014, we reinforced Shyrokyne and didn’t let the Russians reach the outskirts of Mariupol. Every two minutes, we came under severe artillery fire, and it was like this for several hours. Half of my unit was wounded and concussed, but thankfully, still alive. It was a rough day and when we returned to Mariupol, a thousand [locals] greeted us with flowers.”
Russia officially denied taking part in the conflict, although thousands of Russians fought alongside rebel forces, including serving soldiers which Moscow claimed had left for east Ukraine as volunteers.
Though Russian President Vladimir Putin is socially conservative, he is despised among some far-right and ultra-nationalist circles who claim he does not have the best interests of ethnic Russians at heart.
“For a very long time I’ve struggled against the Russian government, which oppresses the Russian people,” Korotkikh said. “From my point-of-view, this isn’t a war against Russia, it’s a war against Putin’s regime.”
Although Korotkikh says his beliefs have now changed – he now describes himself as a “right-wing European conservative” looking up to Poland and Hungary, as well as relatively monoethnic Japan, as “healthy societies” – in 2004 he co-founded the National Socialist Society (NSO), members of which were later imprisoned for a racist murder spree. Botsman is himself wanted in Russia over a grisly 2007 snuff film in which two migrants are shot and beheaded in front of a Nazi flag by a pair of masked executioners. He has been charged with the murder of “two or more people, committed by an organised group motivated by political, ideological, racial, national or religious hatred”.
Korotkikh denied any involvement to Al Jazeera, stating that the killers in the video are much taller than him and that the allegations against him in Russia only surfaced in 2015 after he took an active role fighting for Ukraine.
Korotkikh was personally handed a Ukrainian passport by then-President Petro Poroshenko in 2014 and a year later, despite his association with the NSO, was appointed the head of a police unit.
Ukraine has sheltered members of the far-right Russian opposition since 2014. However, according to Likhachev, the number of these Russian ultra-rightists is relatively small – in the low hundreds – compared with the thousands of Russian nationalists who fought on the side of the separatist Donetsk and Luhansk Peoples’ Republics.
“But, of course, one must understand that Russian ultra-right groups were not independent actors,” Likhachev said. “Far-right groups have often been used by intelligence agencies as technically non-governmental conduits to mobilise militants.”
Not all Russian citizens fighting for Ukraine subscribe to far-right ideas. Two battalions are made up of Chechens seeking another opportunity to face the Russians on the battlefield after a bloody armed campaign in Chechnya ended in the late 2000s.
Ukraine, however, has not always been kind to its foreign volunteers. In 2018, authorities extradited Timur Tumgoyev to Russia, where he was wanted for “terrorism”. Tumgoyev claimed to have fought with the Chechen Sheikh Mansur Battalion, but Russian prosecutors accused him of travelling to Syria to join ISIL (ISIS). Tumgoyev’s application to become a Ukrainian citizen was rejected.
“The Poroshenko government didn’t treat us foreign volunteers very well; in fact, it was rather ugly,” said Makeev, who campaigned for veterans to be awarded citizenship, only receiving his in 2019 under President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
As the Russian military buildup has sparked fears of a renewed conflict, even as Russia denies it intends to invade Ukraine, Makeev and Korotkikh both say they are ready to return to the battlefield. But they have their doubts whether Russian tanks will cross the border, let alone make it all the way to Kyiv.
“My age and health still allow me, so if something happens I’ll actively take part. But I believe this won’t happen,” said Korotkikh. “Russia has other, less visible instruments. It’s less colourful than what certain pundits are saying about war, but it may be even worse for Ukraine. A war is simpler, more honest.”
Korotkikh considers it far more likely Russia will try to apply economic pressure to starve Ukraine and provoke unrest.
Makeev, meanwhile, prefers to focus on a different aspect: Ukraine is being well-armed by its allies.
“At least there’s a constant stream of armaments,” he said. “Any help is great … There’s probably enough Kalashnikovs floating around Ukraine now to arm the entire adult population. The Russians may try, but it won’t be a walk in the park.”
