Yes there are not enough projects for sap partners in nigeria hence the demand for consultants is low
and even where there are projects the tendency is to bring in people from Zimbabwe,
Also the implementationns that are ongoing by sap partners are incorrectly staffed to deliver the solutions they
require, that really comes down to experince or having an experienced Solution Architect
That sap partners implement projects for the sake of it,

Terp10 -  mysap erp integration of business processes

I am certified both technical or functional. At the time I got into SAP we had no academies and I was trained inhouse by the Partner LogicaCMG

There are no contradictions in my posts.

SAP is not Microsoft Certification, so wether you purchase training materials from me or someone else
you will stiil need to get experience and in SAP that's the key without experience you can certify as many time as you like
its worth nothing What these materials do is give you knowledge that wasn't available 13 yeasr ago when I started out.

TERP10 is only valuable if you already have some understanding of SAP and want to be an SAP project manager and even that role is rare
in itself most time people who emerge as PMs on projects have Solid prior SAP experience, with the exception of NLNG.

And lastly only do what you are comfortable with and only take risk that you feel are worth taking.

if you want TERP10 Material to have look at email me at gofestac@yahoo.com

I'll try to answer your questions;
Most people trying to get into SAP have the industry all wrong well at least what they think they know about it,
To be an implementation consultant you need projects under your belt and no amount of training whether sold by me or anyone else can give you that, ultimately it is down to you and the market forces that dictate or decide the enviroment you are in.

The Nigeria scenario is a little complex and I say complex because the SAP implementation are not bourne out of a real need for the technology and also it is hard to convice a client company to invest a large amount of money in something intangible. In developed economies SAP or other ERP solutions are deployed to serve a particular need and this makes it easier to the return on investment and quantify the result.

SAP Partners in Nigeria are trying their best in the conditions that exist, in the market space, however there is a skills shortage and it is diffiicult to tempt experienced people back to work for these comapnies because the payment structure is very different. There are some projects going on but there is not a supply issue as yet.

Another problem I've seen in Nigeria is the fixed cost nature of deployments that make it very difficult to have flexible timescales and what ends up happening is that consultants who lack experience force in solutions which are difficult to support.

If you really want to build a career in SAP first learn about the product and pick an area where you think you can bring the most value, then start learning how to map the business knowledge to SAP functions, for technical people learn a database(oracle MS sql) and network environment (Windows Server Linux, Unix) and virtualization VMware.

When all is said and done remember SAP is not a quick fix and takes alot of time and commitment.

I have been in SAP for over 13 years certified both technical and functional, certifications didnt add any real value but experience did.

IDES is just a demo system though it is useful to help you familiarize yourself with the functions of SAP software it doesn't give you the important thing that it takes to be a consultant and that is domain experience, I'll explain, in order for you to create a Solution for client and advice them on the best possible way of doing things you need to know more than what IDES will give you, in the real world no 2 companies will have the exact same requirement and some are more bespoke than others, the way HR off cycle payroll is handled in Nigeria is very different for how it is handled in the Uk or the US to enble this functionality you would have to understand the requirement of the client and have something to relate it to and thats what the client pays for, if you really want to learn to be consultant find someone experienced to mentor you help you guide your thinking in delivering solutions, its the lack of business knowledge thats making projects in Nigeria fail, SAP integration might sound easy on paper but untill you've actually done when a client has paid 2, 3, 15 millions dollars and you have a totally different kettle of fish. For all you newbies out there ask yourself the fundamental question what happens on my first day on site.
I've been an SAP Consultant for over 13 years and i'll tell anyone who wants to learn SAP to keep doing what they are doing, if you have IDES learn what you can with it, but find a mentor, someone who can teach you how to make sense of all this. SAP might be the how you intend to accomplish the task but the WHY is more important and clients want to know that you can suggest options even when it comes down to configuration or development.
Career / Re: About Sap? by gofestac: 12:23am On Feb 18, 2010
Everyone is an SAP expert, the bottom line is this without experience in SAP you can have 100 certifications and it wont matter. the issue is in Nigeria there are not enough implementation projects and ones that are going on
are not being staffed correctly, the reason for this is that we implement technology for the sake of it and in line with any kind of strategy and also there is an infrastructure issue which hampers most projects. SAP is not a follow the leader technology and is not a fad, take TERP10 for example that is a course with no value but people still rush and certify in it. What Nigeria needs are proper mentors from people who know what they r doing and have been in trenches thay would be able to tell you how to approach the industry without having to line anyones pockets including SAP. The assumption that this vocation will make yu lots of money is a wrong one, and if you follow it for money you'll be seriously disappointed.

To all of you interested in getting into SAP, it is a good area to get into, for technology people have a look at BASIS for Developers have a look at ABAP and for Business people have a look at any of the core functional areas.
BASIS is a lot easier if you have background in Network administration and know database management
ABAP is a lot easier if you come from a programming background especially JAVA is very beneficial
FUNCTIONAL is a lot easier if you have some business process knowledge in a particular area

New Dimenesion things like BW CRM are also areas worth looking at
BW has 2 areas functional designers that build information and write queries and BW developers that also write extractors and integrate BW with other modules, Financial reporting is most in demand hance you have lots of FI consultants that have ventured into BW
CRM is more for Sales and helpdesk people and covers a wide range of skills, but is most beneficial if you have both functional and technical knowledge.

Project based work is what makes you a proper consultant and thats what gives you your edge, breaking in requires carefull planning, demand and supply, and luck, but then you can make you own luck.

Which ever route you choose to pursue remember that deleivering enterprise wide application solutions whether its SAP or Oracle, requires for you to be able to understand requirements in the context of the business and that is the true challenge which no training course will teach you.

Certification And Training Adverts / Re: Who Knows About SAP And ERP? by gofestac: 9:28am On Aug 19, 2009
totally agree, in SAP experience is more important than certification, especially business knowledge, however look at it like this, nobody knows the business better than the client, so the client provides you with an analyst to enable the business processes to be mapped, this what is called the 'as is' then the client with your guidance decides what the 'to be' solution will be. The guidance you provide is based around the available functionality that exists within SAP hence the term functional consultant, having business knowledge helps because you are better able to map the clients requirements to SAP. Whatever is not achievable is deem a GAP and this can be fulfilled using custom development ABAP or Java, administering the system is done by Basis. This is generally the same for all erp though terminology may differ.
before embarking on a long winded journay of SAP certification task yourself with business process knowledge if your goal is to be functional.

When you go to University to get a degree, there is no promise of a job at the end of it, that bit is down to you, any SAP training provider that is promising anyone a job is lying.
The mistake most people who go into any form of IT make is to follow the money, to master SAP takes years of dedication and practice, lots of projects
but you have to start somewhere and that somewhere is the understanding that this is no magic bullet and that you are investing in your future and are prepared to work hard at it. Some people catch a break and get into the field easily many do not.

I get so many emails from people who are looking for a quick fix, I am not interested in those people, it took me over a decade with 3 university degrees to get the knowledge I have. There are opportunities in Nigeria but we are not serios enough to take advantage of them so resources are brought in from Zimbabwe that are just average to do the jobs we can do for ourselves. Its our market and we have to develop it.

All I can show or teach anyone is how not to waste your money because SAP is an expensive undertaking. You need to understand how best to build on your existing experience and lack of it.

The rest is up to you.

I agree with accospace . Regarding developing the SAP market I agree totally with your take on it.

However I take the view that SAP is not rocket science and should not be treated as such, all the work has already been done in building the Software in Germany all we do as consultants is implement it.

SAP is what we call in re engineering enabling technology, so for a business person, understand your business processes and what you want to achieve then look to SAP for the best fit and build the GAPs, For the technical people a clear understanding of technology and its limitations is required, but where you really shine is knowing underlying technology.

The challenge with Nigeria is that the technology being deployed is not required and is mostly over kill and irrelevant to driving businesses, it costs to much and in most cases baring the conglomerates it has not been implemented properly, I know this for a fact.

Developing the market will required us as consultants to bring more people on board and train them across a broad skill base, in the short term there may not be enough work to sustain the model but over time we will be able to outsource some of these consultants.

But first contextual knowledge is required.

Hi,
SAP Enthusiasts, it has come to my attention, that this December a company will be providing access to SAp IDES ECC5 ECC6 BW BI7.0 CRM 5.0 CRM 2007,
with the West African Market as its main focus, so it will be accepting payments in Naira locally
This will enable those of you looking to self train and those looking to practice to keep them selves marketable an opportunity to do.

Get in touch to find out more I think it will cost around 15 to 20 thousand Naira per Month.
