Politics / Tinubu Appeals For Peace In Africa, Global Trouble Spots by Good01: 10:23am On Apr 06
By Nsikak Nseyen

President Bola Tinubu has appealed for global peace and stability in Africa and other trouble spots around the world.

NAN reports that he made the appeal while addressing members of the Diplomatic Corps and heads of international organizations during Ramadan Iftar on Friday in Abuja.

The President urged the ambassadors to convey the message of peace and stability to their respective countries.

"It is an honour for me to speak to you collectively and share with you the diverse culture that Nigeria embodies. Sharing this moment with you is a privilege for us,” he said.

Reflecting on the essence of Ramadan, Tinubu emphasised the values of tolerance and perseverance, noting their importance in fostering peace and stability worldwide.

"Ramadan is a period of self-denial, sharing, tolerance, and perseverance. It is a time for us to bring peace and stability to the world. I appreciate your coming and sharing of peace with us,” the President said.

Tinubu appealed to members of the Diplomatic Corps to extend their care and support to the needy and the vulnerable, noting the collective responsibility to promote peace and stability globally.

“Let us in our hearts care for the needy and those who have nothing. Together, we can promote peace and stability in the world. It is what you need to convey to your various countries, that stability and peace are attainable.

"We should all come together to promote peace in the world. There will be no economic stability without peace in the world,” the President stated.

Politics / How Okuama Residents Are Living In The Forest (Pictures) by Good01: 9:59am On Apr 06
On March 14, the Commanding Officer of the 181 Amphibious Battalion, two majors, one captain, and 13 soldiers were killed at Okuama community in Ughelli South Local Government Area, Delta State.

That was 21 days ago. For those number of days, the residents of the community have been living in the forest. This is just as the Army hunts the killers.

Although the Chief of Defense Staff, General Christopher Musa, identified “General” Endurance Amagbein as the mastermind, the residents have been told it is not time to return home yet.

These photos, exclusive to Vanguard, show the Okuama residents’ lives in the forest. Away from home.

Below are images of Okuama residents living in the forest.

Politics / Kano Govt Charges Ganduje, Wife With $413,000, ₦‎1.38 Billion Bribery by Good01: 4:26am On Apr 05
Olasunkanmi Akinlotan and Tukur Muntari

The Kano State Government has filed criminal charges against the immediate past governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, over alleged $413,000, N1.38bn bribery.

The state said it had assembled 15 witnesses to testify against Ganduje.

Joined as co-defendants in the charge sheet dated April 3, 2024, sighted by our correspondent on Thursday, were Ganduje’s wife Hafsat, and his son, Umar.

Also listed as defendants were Jibrilla Muhammad, Lamash Properties Ltd, Safari Textiles Ltd and Lesage General Enterprises.

Governor Abba Yusuf had on assumption of office accused Ganduje of misappropriating public funds and allocating plots of land to some members of his immediate family.

One of the charges read: “That you, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, sometime between the period of January 10, 2016 or thereabouts, at Kano in the Kano Judicial Division, while serving as the Governor of Kano State and being a public servant in the government of Kano State corruptly asked for and received the sum of $200,000 being benefit for yourself from one of the beneficiaries of contracts awarded by the Kano State Government on your instruction and approval as part of your function as the Governor of Kano State, thereby committed the offence of official corruption, contrary to and punishable under Section 22 of the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Anti-corruption Commission Law 2008 (as amended), Law No 2 of 2009, Laws of Kano State of Nigeria.”

In the second count, the state government said, Ganduje, on February 10, 2017 “dishonestly and/or corruptly to your own advantage collected a kick-back of the sum of $ 213,000 being money generated from people and entities seeking or holding the execution of Kano State Government contact and or project for the remodeling of Kantin Kwari textile market as a bribe through one of the contractors (agent).”

In another count, state alleged that Ganduje, between September 2020 and march 2021, “together with one Hafsat Umar (your spouse) and Abubakar Bawuro, a businessman, Safari Textile Ltd, a limited liability company, wholly owned and maintained by the 3rd defendant, agreed to do an illegal act to wit: dishonestly converted to your own use the sum of N1,376,000,000 through account No. 7085982019 belonging to the 3rd defendant being money earmarked and approved for the purchase and supply of face masks and other hospital equipment for the health sector, thereby causing wrongful loss to the people and the government of Kano State and thereby jointly committed the offence of criminal conspiracy contrary to Section 96 and punishable under section 97 of The penal code (as amended) CAP,105, Vol.2. The Laws of Kano State of Nigeria, 1991.”

The Kano State’s Attorney General, Muhuyi Magaji, said he was empowered by Section 211 of the 1999 Constitution and Sections 121(1), 126(b) and 377 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law, 2019, “to apply to prefer the charge attached herewith against the defendants.”

Meanwhile, the Governor Yusuf also set up two committees to probe the government of Ganduje, over alleged misappropriation of public property, political violence and missing persons in the state.

While inaugurating members of the committees, the governor vowed to bring to book anyone found wanting on conclusion of the probe.

This was contained in a statement signed by the Director-General, Media and Publicity, Sanusi Tofa.

It will be recalled that Governor Yusuf had vowed to recover all public property allegedly stolen by the administration of his predecessor.

The panels, according to the statement, are to unravel those behind or involved in the misappropriation of public properties and political violence between 2015 and 2023.

Tofa quoted the governor as recalling his inaugural promises of investigating the misappropriation of public assets, unravelling and prosecuting the culprits.

He said, “Political violence is a major setback to democracy worldwide. It leads to loss of lives and properties as well as mistrust on the part of the people and those in power.

“The disturbing cases of political killings especially in 2023 must not be swept under the carpet, this is to ensure we prevent future occurrences”.

While Justice Zuwaira Yusuf was pronounced chairperson of the commission with the responsibility of unraveling players and causes of political violence as well as missing persons, Justice Faruk Lawan sits on the commission saddled with the responsibility of probing misappropriation of public properties and assets during the years under review.

The governor, who noted that the move was neither political nor a witch-hunt, charged the commissions not to compromise but to remain faithful to their oath and the people of Kano by ensuring justice for the state.

He added, “We went through your records and we couldn’t find any of you wanting. We believe in you and we expect your full reports in 3 months time.”

Religion / CAN Protests FIRS’ ‘jesus Debt’ Easter Message by Good01: 4:39am On Apr 04
The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has protested against the Federal Inland Revenue Service’s (FIRS’) recent Easter message bearing “Jesus paid your debt, not your taxes” as insensitive and derogatory.

This was contained in a statement on Tuesday by CAN’s Director, National Issues and Social Welfare, Commodore Abimbola Ayuba (Rtd).

Commodore Ayuba said that as a nation that prided itself on religious harmony and peaceful coexistence, CAN was deeply concerned by the recurrence of provocative messages around religious holidays.

The statement reads in part: “This year, a public institution which should be the bastion of exemplary conduct has been implicated in disseminating content that is widely regarded as offensive and derogatory to the Christian faith.

FG to speed up work on Ekiti roads – Umahi

FG calls for Ramadan Reflection, advocates unity community empowerment

“The analogy drawn by the FIRS between the pivotal Christian doctrine of redemption and the civic duty of tax payment has been received with distress and indignation by the Christian community.”

He noted that the association recognised that the intended message might have been to creatively engage taxpayers; but that the execution regrettably crossed the bounds of cultural and religious decorum.

He said while the FIRS’s intent might not have been to show irreverence, the impact of the message could not be ignored, and that it was imperative to remember that the use of religious symbols and narratives should be handled with the highest degree of sensitivity, especially when intersecting with secular matters.

In a swift reaction, Dare Adekanmbi, Special Adviser Media to the FIRS chairman, yesterday apologised to CAN and Christians who felt offended at the unintended consequence of its message on Easter Sunday.

He said as a responsible agency of government, “we would like to say we did not put out the flier purposely to denigrate Jesus Christ or detract from the huge sacrifice He made for humanity.

“The message was our way of uniquely engaging taxpayers and to remind them of the need to prioritise payment of their taxes as a civic obligation.

"FIRS, as a responsible agency, has no religion and will not bring down any religion or offend the sensibilities of adherents of various faiths in the country. Our goal is to assess, collect and account for revenue for the wellbeing of the Federation.”

Politics / Alleged Insult On Igbos: Apologise Within 7 Days Or Face Our Gods – Group Warns by Good01: 4:28am On Apr 04
By John Owen Nwachukwu

The Chairman, Igbo Community Assembly, Apo in Abuja, Ositadinma Patrick Nwoye, has asked the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, to apologize over alleged derogatory comments he made against the Igbos during the demolition of a housing estate belonging to Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu.

The group gave Wike a seven-day ultimatum to issue a public apology to the Igbos or face the wrath of all Igbos and the gods of Igbo land.

Addressing newsmen in Abuja on Wednesday, Nwoye pointed out that Wike allegedly said ‘Why should an Igbo man be given such massive land there?’ and that he has dealt with Igbos in Port Harcourt, that he will do same here in Abuja.

He stressed that such negative comments was not in the best interest of the country where there is an urgent need for peace and unity.

“It has come to our notice about the alleged derogatory statement of Hon. Minister of Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Ezenwo Wike when he went to demolish the property of one of our illustrious sons in person of Hon. Evangelist Prince Nicholas Chukwujekwu Ukachukwu.

“Such derogatory statement is totally uncalled for and should not be swept under the carpet. Because we the Igbos are not commoners in this country Nigeria and the world at large. Which is why we have to address this world Press Conference to keep the records straight.

"Wike should apologise to the Igbos for using the alleged derogatory language.

“That ‘why should an Igbo man be given such massive land and there?’ and that he has dealt with Igbos in Port Harcourt that he will do same here in Abuja.

"We want to remind him that Abuja is not Port Harcourt,” Nwoye said.

Nwoye said that there was a court order stopping the demolition which the FCT Minister had violated.

“We also want to ask Nyesom Ezenwo Wike other fundamental questions on the said Asokoro land matter.

“Question No. 1. Was there a court order restraining the demolition? Question No. 2 If there was, why was it not obeyed?”

Nwoye presented copies of ministerial approvals for the Asokoro Estate as well as copies of the court order preventing the demolition of the estate.

“He told Nigerians that their was no ministerial approval for the said Asokoro land but with me here is a copy of the ministerial approval.

“He (Wike) is lying. We also have copies of the court orders. We also have copies of proof of service to show that he was duly served.”

The group described Wike’s action as mere intimidation, hatred and envy for the Igbos and called on President Bola Tinubu to call the minister to order.

Politics / NEWSIPOB Not Funded Through Sports Betting – Nnamdi Kanu’s Lawyer, Ejimakor Repl by Good01: 9:55am On Mar 30
By Seun Opejobi

Aloy Ejimakor, the lead counsel to the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, on Saturday, reacted to reports that the group is funded through sports betting and crowd-funding.

He described such claims as false and laughable.

The Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit, NFIU, had revealed that global crowdfunding, online transactions, and sports betting fund terrorist organizations in Nigeria like Boko Haram, ISWAP, IPOB, bandits, and other such groups.

In its newsletter, NFIU revealed how IPOB and Eastern Security Network, ESN, received funds through affiliates in 22 countries that have registered at least 27 entities under the group’s name.

The financial unit said seven of the registrations were made in the United States, while six were in the United Kingdom.

It added that over $160,000 raised by IPOB through crowd-funding was funneled to transmission, media, and broadcasting companies in Bulgaria, South Africa, and the UK.

Condemning the report, Ejimakor said somebody was fishing in troubled waters.

Posting on X, he wrote: “It’s incredible to claim that the IPOB (which is LEGAL globally) is funded through sports-betting & crowd-funding. The sports-betting part is false & laughable.

“The crowd-funding part sounds like #GoFundMe which has never happened. Someone is fishing in troubled waters. #FreeMNK”

Politics / We Can Learn From Senegal, Form Strong Coalition And Send Tinubu, APC Packing – by Good01: 9:26am On Mar 30
Atiku also advised him to ensure that his election would not only be beneficial to the people of Senegal but should also be an inspiration to the rest of the people of the West African subregion.

ormer Vice President and presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 general elections, Atiku Abubakar has congratulated the Senegal’s President-elect Bassirou Diomaye Faye for a well deserved victory.

Atiku also advised him to ensure that his election would not only be beneficial to the people of Senegal but should also be an inspiration to the rest of the people of the West African subregion.

Atiku, who stated this in statement on Friday, reiterated his call for opposition parties to forge a coalition that would be formidable enough to oust the ruling party All Progressives Congress (APC), if the salvaging of Nigeria was to stand any chance.

"Against the backdrop of recent military interventions in the West African subregion, the election of Bassirou Diomaye Faye as Senegal’s President-elect in the election of March 24, 2024 gives hope to the future of constitutional democracy in the region," the former Vice President explained.

Atiku, however, noted that there was a huge lesson for Nigerians and elsewhere to learn from the Senegal experience. "It is an affirmation that democracy, which is anchored on the supremacy of the ballot, represents the best form of government.

"It is also possible for the electoral umpire to run an election on the basis of the law and its own guidelines that give confidence to all parties and the voters."

He said that Nigeria's experiences in both 2019 and 2023 show clearly that INEC (Independent National Electoral Commission) performed below this expectation.

"Whereas in Senegal, the responses of the major actors and the citizens are a validation of the process of the election that voted for President-elect Bassirou Diomaye.

"It is important to note that last Sunday's election in Senegal follows the trend of that in Nigeria in 2015 that the opposition can indeed be victorious in an election conducted by the ruling party.

"And for the opposition parties, the lessons are in agreement with my persistent call for our opposition parties to forge a coalition that is formidable enough to oust the ruling party if the salvaging of Nigeria is to stand any chance.

"Congratulations, President-elect Faye. It is my hope and prayer that your election will not only be hugely beneficial to the people of Senegal but also an inspiration to the rest of us in the West African subregion," the statement partly read.

Politics / Buhari Lacked Political Will, Tinubu Should Be Commended For Naming Terror Finan by Good01: 10:00am On Mar 24
By Ignatius Igwe

More reactions keep trailing the list of alleged terrorism financiers released by the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) as well as the tragic murder of 17 military personnel in Delta State on March 14, 2024. While the military says investigations are ongoing, a former Commander of Operation Safe Haven in Plateau State, Major General Henry Ayoola (retd), described it as an assault on the Nigerian state. He was a guest on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme during the week.

Excerpts:

Give us a sense of what happened in Okuama community and within the security circle. There are a lot of talk about the implications, what could have led to the attack and the dynamics of this. For someone like you who has led troops in similar terrain, what came to your mind when you heard the story?

Thank you very much. I will start by commiserating with the families of these gallant officers and soldiers who were gruesomely murdered in a very unusual way in a tragedy. It’s anathema. It’s a terrible thing that shouldn’t have happened at all. I just joined all members of the Armed Forces of Nigeria and including those of us who are outside the service to commiserate with the families of the deceased personnel. We pray and trust that God will comfort the bereaved ones and that this kind of thing should never happen to us as a nation again.

I also like to correct the numbers that are being bandied around. The actual number is 17 in total – the commanding officer who is a lieutenant colonel, two majors, one captain and 13 soldiers, making 17. The issue of human lives cannot be something we will be approximating so we need to be correct about it; it is 17 precious lives.

What comes readily to my mind is: it is a sad load for me, for us, for our country to be in this state. I mean, as somebody who has seen the nation and been around the military sector for over 50 years, I asked myself: How did we get here? You know, how did we get here as a nation? When I was commanding Operation Safe Haven, we have had near such disasters before because what has happened over time is that our nation has lost touch with values, with ethics, with character. What we are seeing is a harvest of long-time failure of parental responsibilities, societal responsibility, of nurturing and upbringing. It’s a case that has gone through a cycle where you had parents who perhaps were not properly brought up and now become parents themselves. It’s sure to happen that way because the law of sowing and reaping applies in all situations, nobody beats it. What is done more greatly in one generation will be done in excess in the next. That’s how it works and that’s what we’re seeing. It’s a sorry state for us to be but I think it’s a clarion call for all of us to wake up and begin to address the real issues.

We’ve done a lot of palliatives, dodging the issues and tolerating things that should have been decisively dealt with over the years. It’s not just something that is happening. What we’ve seen is a habit of several years of negligence, several years of padding things that should have been frontally dealt with. And that’s what we’re seeing now, where you have a situation that the level of civil disobedience has escalated to news not even being deterred by the fact that these are uniformed men and should be respected. It’s an assault on the state, it’s an assault on our collective psyche. It’s something that should outrage everyone of us and nobody should make any attempt to play down on it at all. It’s a wakeup call, we should all wake up and smell the coffee and say: ‘This cycle should end here.’ This cycle of bloodletting, this vicious circle of lawlessness at its peak should come to an end here and everybody should come into this fight.

It is so sad, the brazen attack and the killing of men in uniform. The situation, according to those who know, says it’s a matter of a land dispute and you wonder the role of the military in this kind of situation. Has this been the procedure for the military to be called into this kind of civil engagement or what do you think could have been? Is it a normal procedure for the officers to be involved in this kind of situation at night? What could have gone wrong with this?

Let’s look at it realistically, the truth of it is that our nation is not in the normal state. I mean, the fact that virtually every state in the country today has one military operation or the other tells you that we are not in a normal state. If not, then, why do we have operation this, operation that in all the states? It means we have crossed that threshold of what the normal civil enforcement agencies can handle. That’s what it means. We have been the same people putting so much pressure on the Armed Forces and say, even for non-kinetic measures, the soft-power options and all of that.

Of course, the commanding officer would have thought to nip an obviously boiling issue before it escalates. There can be a thousand and one argument as to whether there was a tactical error or not. It doesn’t matter if a mistake was made. That a set of youths somewhere will have the audacity and the recklessness not to even spare people in uniform who have laid down their lives for the benefit of the rest of us? That level of temerity should not be tolerated. That’s my take on it.

One can only imagine if this is not properly managed, a kind of aggression and a kind of reaction that could have come naturally if it’s not well–managed from the military.

When I was on Operation Safe Haven, we held peace palace almost every week because it was clear that this was not just purely a security challenge. And so there was a need to engage different groups of people, different age groups, different ethnic groups, and different religious groups, all in an attempt to find a solution. In Yoruba, there is a proverb that when something is lost, you search for it anyhow. When you are trying to find a solution to very abnormal situations, you cross several lines, you bend backwards, you lower yourself to even, more or less becoming a preacher even though you are in uniform, you do everything because you want a solution. And if the solution is going to come by the softpower method, by the peace approach, why not? we have been too long in this state as a nation. If you imagine the amount of money that have been spent for the various operations that have been on in the country for over 20 years, those kinds of money will have been used to develop our infrastructure. So the military officers are aware of these things. They are not happy being out there doing what ordinarily should have been police work, nobody is happy with that. That’s the reality on the ground.

Let me take you to the terrorism financiers’ list that was released by the authorities which listed about 15 persons and firms alleged to be involved in terror financing and are being listed for sanctions. What do you make of this?

Nigeria has been battling to kill terrorism for over 20 years now from the northeast region. And now we’re seeing some active roles of these terror gangs within the northwest region of the country in the name of banditry.

Now, one of those persons is facing a trial over alleged link to the train attack in Kaduna. Tukur Mamu in this particular situation. What comes to mind when you heard that the Buhari government had said it would release the list of terror financiers but for eight years that never happened.

I think this is one place that we should give a pat on the back to the current government (the Bola Tinubu administration). I was on the edge severally during the last regime. There was lack of national will to deal with this situation at the time. It is good to see a government that is showing a stronger will to deal with these situations. I have said it again and again, that what we have is a political strategic problem masquerading as security challenges. I’ve said that 1001 times. In my analysis of insurgency and terrorism, I’ve talked about eight essays and indeed, one of the essays is what is coming out now – sponsors – because out of the eight essays, all the approaches we have applied in trying to solve the insurgency and terrorism in the country are just about two components of those eight. So adding this third one to it will go a long way because it’s like we’ve been dodging the issue. It’s like we’ve been dodging naming the enemy, naming the adversaries behind this problem. Are we saying that the gates of hell were open suddenly and Nigeria is just having these all-around security challenges coming? Is it that aliens were sent from some abyss to come and attack Nigeria all at the same time?

Politics / BREAKING: Abducted Kuriga Schoolchildren Released by Good01: 5:29am On Mar 24
By Afeez Hanafi

The abducted Kuriga schoolchildren in Kaduna State have been released by their abductors after about 16 days in captivity.

The state governor, Senator Uba Sani, announced their release on his verified Facebook page in the early hours of Sunday.

The governor did not go into details of their release, but commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, and the Nigerian Army.

He wrote, “In the name of Allah the Beneficient, the Most Merciful, I wish to announce that our Kuriga school children have been released.

"Our special appreciation goes to our dear President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR for prioritizing the safety and security of Nigerians and particularly ensuring that the abducted Kuriga school children are released unharmed. While the school children were in captivity, I spoke with Mr. President several times. He shared our pains, comforted us and worked round the clock with us to ensure the safe return of the children.

"Special mention must also be made of our dear brother, the National Security Adviser, Mal. Nuhu Ribadu for his exemplary leadership. I spent sleepless nights with Mal. Ribadu finetuning strategies and coordinating the operations of the security agencies, which eventually resulted in this successful outcome.

“The Nigerian Army also deserves special commendation for showing that with courage, determination and commitment, criminal elements can be degraded and security restored in our communities.

"We also thank all Nigerians who prayed fervently for the safe return of the school children. This is indeed a day of joy. We give Almighty Allah all the glory.”

Bandits had invaded LEA Primary School Kuriga and Junior Secondary School, Kuriga town, in Chikun Local Government Area of the state around 8am on March 7 and abducted students including a principal, Abubakar Isah.

Although it was initially reported that 287 schoolchildren were abducted, official sources told Daily Trust the actual number was 138 and one of the victims died in captivity.

It was learnt that the remaining 137 victims released by bandits had been taken to hospitals for medical attention.

The abduction, which happened immediately after the assembly briefing, caused uproar across the country.

The abductors were reported to have demanding N1bn from the family to release the children, but both the state and federal governments insisted that no ransom would be paid.

President Tinubu had urged the military and other security agencies to do whatever it takes to rescue the children.

Daily Trust cannot immediately ascertain if a ransom was eventually paid or not.

Politics / APC Is Rejected In Anambra, APGA Replies Ganduje by Good01: 5:09am On Mar 24
By Michael Ovat

The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has replied to the national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Alhaji Abdulahi Ganduje, for saying that Anambra State has remained politically dislocated from the centre by remaining in the APGA.

The National Publicity Secretary of the APGA, Mazi Ejimofor Opara, who reacted to the comment by Ganduje, said Anambra, even though it is a minority party, has remained better than most states that claim to have connected to the centre.

The Nigerian Tribune had earlier reported that Ganduje while making his remark during a South East APC colloquium held in Nnewi and organised by Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, stated that Anambra has been politically dislocated from the South East by remaining in APGA.

But in a reply, Ejimofor blasted Ganduje, saying that his activities in Kano as governor were some of the reasons the state chose a governor from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP).

Ejimofor said: “First, I wonder the level of progress Kano State made under Ganduje’s APC that resulted in a revolutionary and historic rejection of the party by the people in 2023 as the people opted instead to vote for the NNPP and were ready to stake their lives to defend their votes.

“Ganduje should understand that the Southeast and Ndi Anambra in particular are more interested in why Kano State, after him, decided to disconnect from the APC-controlled centre.

"Well, the APC is nonexistent in Anambra; I am sure Ganduje himself knows this for a fact. Again, the continued existence of APGA in Anambra is performance-based.

“Anambra, and indeed, the Southeast, is APGA land. There is no doubt about this, and even where the region decides to negotiate a handshake with the Centre, the APC has proven not to be such a viable alternative. I sincerely hope that Mr Ganduje will seek to really see that which is not hidden rather than opting for deliberate ignorance.

"From Peter Obi to Willie Obiano and now Professor Soludo, Anambra has remained on a trajectory of progressive growth, and it is for this reason that even a political neophyte would state without double checking that Ganduje was either speaking to impress his host or he is sincerely ignorant of the facts.

“Anambra under APGA has remained a state of many firsts, and in recent times, the state under the Soludo government has won many awards.

"Recall that Anambra has won the award as the state with the best deployed ICT, and Anambra State ICT Agency under Mr. Chukwuemeka Fred Agbata won that award. Anambra has also been named as the state with the lowest out-of-school child record.

“If all these awards are what it takes to be disconnected from the centre, then Anambra will gladly remain disconnected.”

Opara added that it is appalling that a political party that proposed a colloquium turned it into a political rally and ended up conducting a primary election, where the host senator, Ifeanyi Ubah, was unashamedly declared the candidate of the party in the next election.

Crime / Kaduna Police Arrest Kidnappers’ Gang Leader Linked To Catholic Church Attack by Good01: 10:01pm On Mar 23
By Godwin Isenyo

Operatives of the Kaduna State Police Command on Saturday apprehended a suspected notorious kidnappers’ gang leader, Saidu Yakubu, also known as “Ismail.”
The gang was said to be behind the September 7, 2023 attack at St. Raphael Catholic Church, Fadan Kamanta, Kafanchan Diocese, in Jema’ah Local Government Area of Kaduna State, razing the parish house together with a seminarian, Na’aman Danladi, to death.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Mansir Hassan, in a statement, on Saturday said the arrest was made in collaboration with the military personnel.

Hassan said the suspect has confessed to his involvement in the crime.

He said, “In a commendable display of swift action and dedication to public safety, the Kaduna State Police Command, under the leadership of Commissioner, Ali Dabigi, has successfully apprehended a notorious kidnapper, Yakubu Saidu, also known as Ismail ‘M’ who was involved in banditry, culpable homicide and mischief by fire.

"On September 7, 2023, at approximately 2030hrs, the Officer in Charge of Fadan Kamanta, Zonkwa, alerted authorities of a distressing situation at St. Raphael Catholic Church, Kamantan, where suspected kidnappers had launched an attack. Despite the urgency of the situation, police operatives, in collaboration with military personnel, swiftly mobilised to the scene.

Regrettably, the suspects had already set ablaze the priest’s residence before the arrival of the security personnel. Foreign Affairs / Terror Attack: Putin Fingers Ukraine, Vows Punishment by Good01: 6:34pm On Mar 23
Russian President, Vladimir Putin, has vowed that all perpetrators of the deadly attack at Crocus City Hall in northern Krasnogorsk, Moscow, where more than 100 people were killed on Friday evening will be punished.

Putin said this during his address to Russians on the concert hall attack where about 140 people were critically injured.

While Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the assault, the Russian leader said the attackers were captured trying to cross the border to Ukraine.

“I am addressing to you in connection with the bloody, barbaric terrorist act, the victims of which were dozens of peaceful, innocent people – our compatriots, including children, teenagers, and women,” he said.

Putin who just won the recent presidential election to spend another six years of a tenure in office lauded the medical practitioners, special forces and citizens for helping at this time.

He stated, “Doctors are now fighting for the lives of the victims, those who are in serious condition. I am sure they will do everything possible and even impossible to save the lives and health of all the wounded.

Special thanks to the ambulance and air ambulance crews, special forces soldiers, firefighters, rescuers who did everything to save people’s lives, get them out from under fire, from the epicenter of fire and smoke, and avoid even greater losses.

“I cannot ignore the help of ordinary citizens, who in the first minutes after the tragedy did not remain indifferent and, along with doctors and special services, provided first aid and took the victims to hospitals…

"I express my deep, sincere condolences to all those who lost their loved ones. The whole country and our entire people are grieving with you. I declare March 24 a day of national mourning.”

Putin also said the Kremlin is working out measures to prevent further attacks after confirming that the capital and its environs.

“Additional anti-terrorist and anti-sabotage measures have been introduced in Moscow and the Moscow region, in all regions of the country. The main thing now is to prevent those who are behind this bloodbath from committing a new crime,'” Putin said.

"As for the investigation of this crime and the results of operational investigative actions, the following can currently be said.

“All four direct perpetrators of the terrorist attack, all those who shot and killed people, were found and detained. They tried to hide and moved towards Ukraine, where, according to preliminary data, a window was prepared for them from the Ukrainian side to cross the state border. A total of 11 people were detained.

"The Federal Security Service of Russia and other law enforcement agencies are working to identify and uncover the entire terrorist support base: those who provided them with transport, planned escape routes from the crime scene, prepared caches, caches of weapons and ammunition…

“It is already obvious that we are faced not just with a carefully and cynically planned terrorist attack, but with the organised mass murder of peaceful defenceless people. The criminals were cold-blooded and purposefully going to kill, shoot our citizens at point-blank range – our children.

"Like the Nazis who once carried out massacres in the occupied territories, they planned to arrange a demonstrative execution, a bloody act of intimidation. All the perpetrators, organisers and those who ordered this crime will be justly and inevitably punished.

“Whoever they are, whoever is guiding them. I repeat, we will identify and punish everyone who stands behind the terrorists, who prepared this atrocity, this strike against Russia, against our people.

"We know what the threat of terrorism is. Here we count on cooperation with all states that sincerely share our pain and are ready to really join forces in the fight against a common enemy – international terrorism – in all its manifestations. Terrorists, murderers… who do not and cannot have a nationality, face one unenviable fate – retribution and oblivion. They have no future.

"Our common duty now, our comrades–in-arms at the front, all citizens of the country, is to be together in one formation. I believe it will be so, because no one and nothing can shake our unity and will, our determination and courage, the strength of the united people of Russia.

“No one will be able to sow the poisonous seeds of discord, panic and discord in our multinational society. Russia has been through the hardest, sometimes unbearable trials more than once, but it has become even stronger. So it will be now.”

Religion / Why I Demanded Return Of Tithe From My Former Church – Abuja Man by Good01: 7:35am On Mar 17
Abuja-based furniture maker, Chukwudiaso Onyema, who went viral after demanding a refund of the tithe paid to a church, speaks to VICTORIA EDEME on his transition from Christianity to traditional religion

What kind of background do you have?

I am Mazi Chukwudiaso Onyema from the Oru East Local Government Area of Imo State. I am based in Abuja. I am a furniture maker, and I am 39 years old. I have five brothers and two sisters. I grew up in Imo State. My uncle took me to Abuja in 2000. I attended Junior Secondary School, Karo, but I later had an issue with my uncle, and I returned to Imo State to complete my secondary school education. I took the Senior School Certificate Examination at Mgbidi Secondary School, Imo State, after which I returned to Abuja to learn furniture making.

Are you married?

I got married in 2019 and I have two kids.

Were you born into a Christian family?

Yes, I was.

What was your experience growing up in a Christian home?

It was okay. I had no problems with my parents. They trained us well. The only issue I have is that there are things that my parents were not telling us. Even when I decided toq pull out from Christianity, some of my elders supported me.

What church were your parents attending?

My parents attended the Catholic Church.

Your video, in which you demanded a refund of your tithe and offerings from Dunamis Church, went viral last year. At what point did you move from the Catholic Church to Dunamis?

I first moved from the Catholic Church to Living Faith Church in 2004. In 2008, I moved to Dunamis Church.

Why did you move from the Catholic Church to the Living Faith Church?

The reason I moved from the Catholic Church to the Living Faith Church was because I frequently saw the miracles being performed in Living Faith. I pulled out of the Catholic Church to go and confirm if those miracles were real.

How did you go about confirming the authenticity of the miracles?

I wanted to be in their midst so that I would be seeing things live and direct, and not on the television. I later found out that they were not real. They were all packaged.

How did you know that the miracles were not real?

I was in Living Faith for about four to five years before leaving for Dunamis. then I moved to Dunamis because I used to see some drastic miracles on Dunamis Television. So I decided to move to Dunamis.

Why were you interested in miracles and not other aspects of Christianity?

I was not so concerned about the miracles. If I were so concerned about the miracle, I wouldn’t go into Bible training to know more about God. I was not moving around because of the miracles per se. I wanted to confirm if there was power in the name of Jesus. That’s what they show on TV; miracles about Jesus, and what Jesus did. So I wanted to know if it was true. That was why I switched churches.

Did you attend any Bible training session at Living Faith?

I didn’t attend any Bible training sessions and I was not a worker. I was just a normal church member.

How was your membership in Dunamis?

At Dunamis, I joined several training sessions and got certificates. I paid my tithes, offerings, vows, and others. What I was concerned about was the tithe because I had evidence. I was not concerned about the vows and offerings.

When did you start paying tithe?

I started paying tithe in 2008 when I joined Dunamis because of what was preached there. You cannot go to Pentecostal church without following their instructions or what the man of God is preaching.

You stated that you were once a preacher. When did you start preaching?

I started preaching when I was at Living Faith. I preached during morning cry and on the streets. I started preaching inside the bus, inside the market, and other places, even inside the church while at Dunamis.

What was the turning point for you that led to your viral video?

It was when I sowed a seed and in the end, I didn’t see the result. They kept on pushing me to continue sowing and I just realised that it was a scam. They preached that when I give to God, he would open the windows of heaven for me. I tried this from 2008 till my eyes opened. I realised that the owner of the whole universe didn’t need anything. He has everything so I don’t know the reason why they are giving to God to succeed and it’s not working. When I realised this, I wasn’t concerned about getting my money back. I wanted to open the eyes of many who still believed that they were giving to God. That was why I made the video.

When did you come to this realisation?

My eyes opened in 2018. I made the video on February 7, 2023.

What did you do after the realisation?

I decided not to follow any religion. I embraced humanity. When religion and spirituality are destroyed, we have humanity. So I embraced humanity to love my neighbour as myself so that the world would be better. For me, I believe in traditional religion because it was practised by my forefathers. Instead of me following foreign religions, I should follow traditional religions. If there is anything that is not good in traditional religion, we make it good rather than follow foreign religions. Foreign religions are not adding anything to Nigeria and that is why I quit. I’m not practicing traditional religion fully but I would rather claim it because it is better.

How do you practice your traditional religion?

It is a way of life for Africans. There is a way we marry and pray to the Almighty. The Almighty we are worshipping does not have any child but the foreign religion said that God has a son who came to wipe away the sins of the world. But today, sin continues. I’m not fully into traditional religion because some things are not right.

How do you pray?
I pray to the Almighty, the Creator. We call him ‘Chukwuokike’. We don’t communicate with our God through anybody. We communicate with Him directly, unlike other religions which say that we have to communicate with God through His son.

Did Dunamis respond to the viral video you made?

The secretary of the church called me from the headquarters. He said I should gather all my evidence because I had my tithe booklet, which they called the kingdom investment booklet. Whenever I paid my tithe, I used to write the amount and date. I told him that I was not coming to honour their invitation. I snapped the tithe booklets and forwarded them to him, with the total amount, which I don’t want to disclose as it’s between me and the church. Till now, he hasn’t responded to it.

How did the video impact you?

What I was fighting for was not money, because I’m blessed today. I have a car, company, house, and everything a man is supposed to have. I only made the video to open the eyes of many who are giving their hard-earned money to their fellow men, thinking that they are giving it to God. When I made the video, many people called me and said they wanted to help me or give me money but I refused.

Did you face any online criticism because of the video?

Yes, I did. When I first made that video, my Facebook followers were dropping me as a friend and speaking against me. But today, 90 per cent of those who spoke against me are now speaking in my favour. That’s why I didn’t retaliate. I just laughed off all the criticism. The video gave me more popularity.

How did your family react to it?

They were not expecting it. My mum called me and started crying. She said I abandoned my creator and was fighting God. I told her the reason for my action. In the end, she understood me; it was the same for my siblings.

What was your wife’s reaction to your realisation?

I came to this realisation even before getting married to her. I told her that I was not going to do any foreign wedding but would only do the traditional marriage. She disagreed because she wanted to wear a white wedding gown like other women. I begged her and talked sense to her and she understood me. When I made the video, she was angry. She called me from school as she was schooling at a university then. In the end, she also realised what I was saying.

Does your wife have a Christian background?

She was born into a Catholic family but we both met in Dunamis. When I left the church, she refused to leave the church but after we got married, she eventually left the church.

When did you become open to traditional religion?

That was in 2018 because I believe that there is nothing like spirituality.

Do you mean that traditional religion is not spiritual?

It is spiritual and that is why I have not embraced it fully. As I am, I don’t understand anything about spirituality and it is not working.

What is holding you back from embracing traditional religion fully?

There are some things they believe in that are not working. For example, people consult traditionalists to find out the culprit when there’s a case of stealing but it doesn’t work. There are instances where such traditionalists lose the items they use. If their divinations were working, they would have also used it to identify who stole their items.

What challenges did you face when you were transiting from Christianity?

It was not easy at all, as there were challenges from friends and family. They tried to change my mission but I held on to my conviction. There are many people with the same conviction as mine but they don’t want to come out now because of their families and friends.

So far, have you seen any specific change in your life?

I have seen so many changes. Now I sleep in peace. I don’t sleep with the mindset that somebody is after me or people want to kill me from the village. I now reason with my senses. The money I’m supposed to give to my fellow man as tithe, I am also investing it and it is yielding income to me. I’m enjoying my wealth here on earth. I’m not waiting for life after death. I’m benefitting a lot from embracing humanity.

How has your new lifestyle influenced your daily life?

In ancient Igboland, we had four market days and there were no resting days. These days were Nkwo, Afor, Eke, and Orie, wherein people were productive, unlike these days where Sunday is for resting, Tuesday for healing and deliverance, Wednesday for Bible study, and Friday for welfare prayers. During those days, one is expected to close the shop and go and pray to God because they believe that He will supply their needs through His riches in glory. So my transition has changed my life in so many ways. On Sundays, if I am lucky, I take my family to Igbo traditional gatherings to learn more about my tradition. As time goes on, we are going to remove some things that are not working well in these traditions. In India and China, they follow their ancestral religions and things are working perfectly for them.

What are things that should be removed from traditional religion to make it right?

In so many villages today, they have polluted the rivers due to their sacrifices to ‘maami water’ and other gods. They leave those sacrifices in the rivers and the items get spoiled and start smelling. All in the name of giving to gods, they are just messing up our environment. These are some of the things to make right. If they want to sacrifice, they can do it at the side of their house and in the evening, gather the items and burn them, instead of polluting the air and the environment. Secondly, there are some marks given to people when they are sick. All of these do not work. Sick people should go to the hospital.

Do you think it is possible to change these beliefs that have shaped the traditions for ages?

It is possible. There is nothing impossible for man to do. If we are determined to change it, we will. The children we are giving birth to today are leaders of tomorrow. The right knowledge should be imparted to them. Let them know the right and the wrong. Don’t bring religion to them. When you have children today, you force religion on them and do not allow them to make their own decisions. Children are being forced into what they don’t understand.

What steps are you taking to ensure the change?

I am trying my best. I have started it in my house, in my workplace, and in my neighbourhood. Anywhere I go, I let them know that man is god and we are gods to our fellow men. The reason why we are still suffering is because we embrace religion and lack humanity. I will not force my belief on people but I will tell them where I stand.

From your experience, are there any similarities between Christianity and humanity?

There are no similarities at all. Humanity is based on reality, but spirituality and Christianity are based on illusions and stories that we are not sure of.

Politics / Court Order: Vacate National Secretariat Now, NURTW Warns MC Oluomo Group, Seeks by Good01: 5:43am On Mar 15
The National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) has called on President Bola Tinubu, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and the Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, to prevail on the former President of the union, Najeem Usman Yasin, to vacate the union's National Secretariat in line with the order of the court to avoid a breakdown of law and order.

The President of the union, Alhaji Tajudeen Ibikunle Baruwa, stated this on Thursday in Abuja at a press conference addressed by his lawyer, Tolu Babaleye on the judgment of the National Industrial Court delivered on March 11,2024 by Justice O.O Oyewumi which affirmed Baruwa as the validly elected President of the union for a second term.

He described the statement made by Najeem in a viral video as contemptuous and affront to the court where he made a derogatory statement in an attempt to downplay the authority of the court that "the judgment of the court amounted to nothing and that they have resolved to install one Musiliu Ayinde Akinsanya aka (MC Oluomo) as National President of the union and also install one Mustapha Adekunle as the Lagos State Chairman.

"We are aware of a video on social media where Alhaji Najeem Yasin gathered some people telling them that there is nothing the court can do.

“I want to sound a note of warning that Alh. Najeem Yasin should be aware there is a court order restraining him from interfering in the affairs of the union.

We are using this opportunity to call on the President of Federal Republic of Nigeria, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Federation, Minister of Labour and Employment, Inspector General of Police, AIG Zone 7, FCT Commissioner of Police to give effect to the judgement of National Industrial Court recognising Alhaji Tajudeen Ibikunle Baruwa as valid and substantive elected President of NURTW," the lawyer said.

He narrated how Najeem's illegal group executed a coup d'état to hijack the National Secretariat of the union with the help of the police who unjustly arrested Baruwa and other executed members and later charge them to court for the offence they never committed.

According to Babaleye “On 11th March, 2024 a judgment was delivered in which the election of Alh. Tajudeen Ibikunle Baruwa was confirmed as valid and that nothing should be to stop him from performing as democratically elected President of the union along with all other members of National Executive Council.

“The court granted all the reliefs sought by the claimants except in relief 1 in the Originating Summons. Relief 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7,8,9 and 10 were granted in favour of Baruwa and other others.

"Relief 9 succeeds only to the extent that the 1st defendant ( Alhaji Najeem Yasin ) as Chairman Board of Trustees has no right to interfere in the day to day running of the affairs the union. As the role of the board of trustees, is only limited to advisory role and does not include interfering with the running of activities of the Union.

Politics / Wike Gives Reason Nigeria Is ‘still Together’ by Good01: 3:12am On Mar 15
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, said that the country continues to remain one because of the prayers of the church and responsible religious organisations.

Wike stated this on Thursday when he received a delegation from the Abuja Archdiocese of the Methodist Church of Nigeria, led by the Archbishop, Most Reverend Michael O. Akinwale, on a courtesy visit.

“The role the church is playing is very important. So, the government will always partner with the church and other religious groups because the government cannot do it alone. Just like the President said the other day, the country requires prayers for peace; we require prayers for stability; we require prayers for the country to move forward,” he said.

"It takes the church and other religious groups that have been responsible and praying for this nation to remain together. And therefore, whatever we can do to support, we will always do that. And that is why, as FCTA, we take responsibility for maintaining the Christian Centre and the National Mosque. These are two national assets for which the FCTA is responsible for their maintenance because we all believe we serve one God.”

He assured his guests of the willingness of the FCTA to render any form of support to the Methodist Church while also assuring them that he would welcome a visit from the head of the Methodist Church in Nigeria, the Most Reverend Oliver Aba.

Politics / APC ‘ll Record Overwhelming Victory In Edo Governorship Election – Ganduje by Good01: 6:55pm On Feb 24
Dr Abdullahi Ganduje, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) says it is almost certain that the party will win the Sept. 21 Edo governorship election, going by the qualities of its candidate Sen. Monday Okpebholo.
Ganduje said this on Saturday in Abuja when he presented the certificate of return to Okpebholo, saying that there was a need for other aspirants to work with him to ensure the party’s victory in the state.

He said that direct primaries were held in 192 wards in the state with records and video evidence, adding that Okpebholo was declared winner because he got the highest votes.

“The full cooperation, harmony and unity of all aspirants and members of our party is all we need now to win Edo in the coming election now that the primary is over.

"The party has a product that is refined, well packaged and sellable to the electorate in the person of Okpebholo and is therefore ready to win Edo,” Ganduje said.

He said that other aspirants had since congratulated Okpebholo as the party’s candidate.

Mr Nze Duru, the party’s Deputy National Organising Secretary while presenting the committee’s report to Ganduje, said the primaries was adjudge nationally and internationally to the the most peaceful, fairest and transparent in the state.

Okpebholo in his remarks, called on other aspirants who contested the party’s ticket with him to join forces with him to ensure that the APC win the Sept. 21 governorship election.

Also speaking, Sen. Lucky Imasuen one of the aspirants who contested the party’s ticket with Okpebholo said the National Working Committee (NWC)was hard working, sincere and fair in the handling of the Edo primarily election.

He commended the APC Edo Governorship Primary Election Committee for a job well done, assuring that the other aspirants would work hand in hand with Okpebholo to ensure APC’s victory at the poll.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Dennis Idahosa was initially declared the winner of the Edo Governorship Primary Election on Feb. 17, by the Gov. Hope Uzodinma-led Governorship Primary Election Committee.

The APC NWC however, upturned Idahosa’s election and declared the election as inconclusive.

The committee slated Feb.21 for a supplementary election and replaced Uzodinma with Gov. Bassey Otu of Cross River as chairman.

Otu while declaring Okpebholo as winner of the supplementary primaries, said he got 12,433 votes to defeat 11 other aspirants in the contest.

Okpebholo currently represents Edo Central at the National Assembly.

Politics / Hardship: Borno Introduces Tax Relief Mechanism To Ease Doing Business by Good01: 6:46pm On Feb 24
By Ndahi Marama, Maiduguri

The Borno State Internal Revenue Service (BoIRS) said it introduced tax relief for payers to reduce hardship and ease of doing business in the state.

This is even as the service was able to block leakages and generated N2.8 billion Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) between January 1st and February 15th, this year 2024.

This was disclosed at the weekend by the Executive Chairman of the service, Prof Bello Ibrahim, during a press briefing which took place at the conference room of the BoIRS in Maiduguri.

Ibrahim explained that the signing of Executive Order (5) by Governor Babagana Zulum has led to the establishment of the Grievance Redress Mechanism (GRM), which allows the service to listen to all complaints from taxpayers and give Redress.

” I am happy to inform you that the signing of Executive Order (5) by His Excellency, Governor Babagana Zulum has led to the establishment of the Grievance Redress Mechanism (GRM).

This allows the service to attend to and listen to all complaints from the general public on the issues of taxation.

“Even today, we received complaints and reviewed them. An individual can walk into our office and say this tax behaviour is huge on me, I can’t pay.

“We then look at the complaints and see where we can panel beat. We will ask him for his explanation to figure out how we can provide him with tax relief,” he said.

Professor of Economics said that in all states of the federation taxpayers must comply with the 67-day statutory period otherwise it becomes an act of enforcement.

“Remember I said, if you have N2,000 in Borno State, you can pay in three instalments, isn’t it a relief?

“On average, a roadside vulcaniser pays N6,000 no matter how big the business is, provision shops pay N9,500, and they can pay 9 times. Is it not a relief?

“This is not practised anywhere. It’s part of the relief we are giving to taxpayers. We need tax in order to survive as a state, we don’t have anything” he said.

He noted that all governments around the world rely on tax for revenue to engage in meaningful development projects.

“We have people and we want to rely on them, and in doing that, we have been very lenient and considerate on the situation on the ground” he said.

He said the tax model adopted by the commission is teaching people to accept taxation.

“It would interest you to know that the service under my leadership was able to block leakages and generate N2.8 billion IGR between January 1st and February 15th this year, this is unprecedented in the history of the BoIRS.

“The Service collected N1.7 billion in revenues in January, while N1.1 billion had been generated from February 1 to February 15th, 2024.

“We also generated N19.4 billion from Ministries, Departments and Agencies as well as the 27 local government areas in last year, 2023.

” We achieved these through our sustainable introduction of four alternative means of payments, which include; commercial banks, Point of Service (POS), Android phones and tax payment agents at no cost.

“The state has recorded this remarkable increase in revenue due to blockage of leakages, dedication and improved welfare of staff as well as application of modern technology in the tax collection payment systems”. He stated

Politics / Atiku’s Solution Will Return Nigeria To Emefiele Era – Presidency by Good01: 5:56am On Feb 19
Stephen Angbulu

The Presidency says a controlled floatation of the naira to prevent further devaluation would only return Nigeria to the economic regime of the embattled former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele.

It said the policy, which saw about $1.5bn spent monthly to shore up the naira, fuelled financial malpractices, such as arbitrage which hurt the economy.

The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr Bayo Onanuga, made this assertion in a statement he signed Sunday titled, ‘Once again, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar got it wrong.’

Onanuga was responding to a former Vice President and presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party at the 2023 polls, Atiku Abubakar, who argued that Tinubu’s economic policies, especially the unification of the exchange rate, were implemented hastily without adequate planning and proper consultations with stakeholders.

President Tinubu’s economic reforms of the past nine months have sparked collateral instability in the value of the naira, heaping hardship on Nigerians as food prices continue to soar.

Atiku criticised the government, saying, “The wrong policies of the Tinubu administration continue to cause untold pain and distress on the economy and the rest of us cannot keep quiet when the government has demonstrated sufficient poverty of ideas to redeem the situation.”

He argued that “Given Nigeria’s underlying economic conditions, adopting a floating exchange rate system would be an overkill. We would have encouraged the Central Bank of Nigeria to adopt a gradualist approach to FX management. A managed-floating system would have been a preferred option.”

Atiku observed that the naira might fluctuate daily in such a system, but the CBN would step in to control and stabilise its value.

“Such control will be exercised judiciously and responsibly, especially to curb speculative activities,” he noted.

But the Presidency disagreed, saying, “Atiku’s alternative of a controlled floatation of the naira is similar to the policy of Godwin Emefiele when an estimated $1.5bn was spent monthly to shore up the naira, while arbitrage or round-tripping went on unhindered. Sadly, it was perpetrated by people close to the corridors of power.”

Onanuga noted that last Thursday’s meeting between the President, his vice, and state governors was not to discuss currency fluctuation as Atiku claimed but food supply and how to drastically reduce the fluctuation in food prices.

Citing Tinubu’s plea to governors to allow the CBN to work and his stance not to establish a commodity board, he said, “We expected Alhaji Atiku to praise President Tinubu for maintaining this stance and for not interfering with the business of Central Bank.

"It is false and preposterous for Atiku to claim that CBN’s FX management policy was hurriedly put together without proper plans and consultations with stakeholders and that the apex bank is hamstrung by Tinubu’s government in implementing a sound FX Management Policy’ that would have dealt with such issues as increasing liquidity, curtailing/regulating demand, dealing with FX backlogs and rate convergence.’

Politics / Quit If You Can’t Solve Nigeria’s Problems, PDP Govs Tell APC by Good01: 4:03pm On Feb 17
Governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party have asked the All Progressives Congress-led Federal Government to throw in the towel if it cannot mobilise all organs and tiers of government for sustainable solutions to the economic challenges confronting Nigerians.

There has been a recent rise in food prices and economic difficulties, which has made it challenging for Nigerians to buy necessary items.

The PDP governors, under the leadership of the Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, on Monday, said Nigeria under Tinubu was almost on the path to becoming like Venezuela.

In response, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, stated in a release that drawing parallels between Nigeria and Venezuela was mischievous, emphasizing that many of the PDP governors have failed to fulfill obligations such as paying minimum wage, gratuities, and pensions.

He stated, “It is far-fetched when the PDP governors, who are supposed to be major players in driving economic growth and prosperity for our citizens in their respective states, mischievously and falsely compare our current economic challenges to Venezuela.”

Reacting in a statement on Saturday, the PDP Governors Forum’s Director General, Cyril Maduabum, explained that the governors of the party patriotically offered advice to the Federal Government, suggesting initiatives that involve both the Federal and State Governments to address the security and economic challenges confronting the nation.

He said the suggestions and advice were provided as contributions from a group of patriotic governors who actively participate in governance.

The Forum praised Tinubu for organising a special meeting to address some of the raised issues and urged that the resolutions of the meeting should be implemented.

The statement read in part “It must be noted that even though Nigeria is a Federation, there is indeed only one economy.

“Hardship and suffering being faced by Nigerians have no tribal, religious or party colouration. A hungry man is an angry man.

“While all tiers of government have a role to play, the APC-led Federal Government has a disproportionate role to play in mobilising Nigerians and all organs and tiers of government for sustainable solutions. If it can not do so or is unable to do so, it should graciously throw in the towel.

"Attempts by the Honourable Minister of Information, APC Governors’ Forum, and other officials of the Federal Government who criticised the PDP Governors’ Forum for their patriotic intervention should be guided by the fact that the APC sought power to solve the problems of Nigeria not to compound them or shift blame, or grandstand or use propaganda to obfuscate or confuse issues.

"PDP-governed states are comparatively the best in Nigeria in terms of developmental policies, programmes, and projects that benefit their states positively, regular payment of salaries, pensions, gratuities, and minimum wage to their workforce. State governments that are delinquent on these issues are not of PDP extraction. It is false to say so. Even the food crises are exacerbated by insecurity and high exchange rate issues, among others, which are largely federal subjects.

"The PDP Governors as stakeholders in governance would continue to work collaboratively with Mr. President to find lasting solutions to a very difficult situation created or exacerbated by the APC since 2015. We believe in cooperative federalism.

"The buck ultimately stops at Mr. President’s table as the Chief Executive Officer of Nigeria, the President and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federation, the Chief Salesman and leader of Nigeria. We are not in doubt that he is trying his best. We only hope and pray that his best is good enough to take Nigeria out of the woods in the shortest possible time.”

Politics / Food Crisis: No Plan To Establish Price Control Board - Tinubu by Good01: 9:03pm On Feb 15
President Bola Tinubu says he will not set up any board to regulate prices of food commodities in the country.

What I will not do is to set a price control board. I will not also approve the importation of food,”

Tinubu said at a meeting with 36 state governors, attended by the Vice-President, the National Security Adviser, the Inspector-General of Police, the Director-General of the DSS, and some ministers at the State House in Abuja on Thursday.

His comments come days after Vice President Kashim Shettima hinted at plans to establish a National Commodity Board to curtail the escalating food inflation in Nigeria.

The President’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, revealed the details of Tinubu’s discussion in a statement titled ‘President Tinubu to 36 state governors: there must be zero tolerance for incompetence; support local farmers to boost food production and remove rent seekers.’

While declaring open a two-day high-level strategic meeting on climate change, food systems and resource mobilisation at Presidential Villa, the VP said the FG will tackle price volatility by “establishing a National Commodity Board.”

The board will be empowered to “continually assess and regulate food prices, maintaining a strategic food reserve for stabilising prices of crucial grains and other food items,” he explained.

But Tinubu affirmed that his administration would not set up any such board.

Rather, it is evolving home-grown solutions to address the nation’s food security challenges by setting up schemes to support local production and discourage all forms of rent-seeking associated with food importation.

On security, Tinubu approved the establishment of a committee comprising state governors and Federal Government representatives to, among other things, explore the modalities for establishing state police.

He stated, “My position at this meeting is that we must move aggressively and establish a committee to look critically at the issues raised, including the possibility of establishing state police.

"From Kano, we have read reports about large-scale hoarding of food in some warehouses. The National Security Adviser, the Inspector-General of Police, and the Director-General of the Department of State Services should coordinate very closely and ensure that security agencies in the states inspect such warehouses with follow-up action.

"We must ensure that speculators, hoarders, and rent seekers are not allowed to sabotage our efforts in ensuring the wide availability of food to all Nigerians. What I will not do is to set a price control board. I will not also approve the importation of food.”

Tinubu reasoned that his administration could get Nigerians out of the dire food crisis “because importation will allow rent seekers to perpetrate fraud and mismanagement at our collective expense."

Instead, the FG would support farmers with schemes enabling them to farm and grow more food for everyone in the country.

"We must also look at the rapid but thoughtful implementation of our livestock development and management plans, including dairy farming and others,” the President added.

He also endorsed the training and equipping of forest rangers by sub-national governments to safeguard human and natural resources in local communities.

Tinubu urged the governors to trust the Central Bank of Nigeria with the management of the country’s monetary policy, emphasising the importance of allowing designated institutions to fulfill their mandate effectively.

He said the “Cacophony of postulations” on the fluctuation of foreign exchange rates was unduly affecting the market negatively.

Every one of us cannot be an expert. If we have given someone an assignment, let us allow them to do it. If they cannot do it, then we find a way to quickly get them out of the system.”

The President asked the governors to always make the welfare and prosperity of the people a priority of their development programmes, assuring them that the Federal Government would continue to work diligently to improve the nation’s revenue profile.

At the meeting, Tinubu and the governors also emphasised the importance of working together to address issues of insecurity, food security, and out-of-school children.

Politics / Economic Hardship: Nigeria Needs Urgent Spiritual Help – Adeboye by Good01: 10:02pm On Feb 11
By Ibrahim Hassan-Wuyo

The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adejere Adeboye, said Nigeria needs urgent spiritual help to overcome the challenges confronting the nation.

The pastor spoke in Kaduna on Sunday while on a visit to the state’s governor, Uba Sani.

According to Adeboye, the challenges facing the country were more than political, but problems that required spiritual solutions.

“We don’t want a situation where people begin to think of taking their own lives,” he said.

He said that political leaders appeared to have tried their humanly possible best, yet the problems persisted. “Nigeria needs the help of God and it needs the help urgently,” he added.

"I’m in Kaduna to pray for the people and give them hope,” he said.

Adeboye, however, expressed confidence that although the problems confronting Nigeria seemed to have persisted and in some areas getting worse, he trusted God that, the problems would not last forever and they would even be over sooner than later.

According to him, his tour of Nigeria, which brought him to Kaduna, was not just to organise crusades and pray for the people and Nigeria, but an opportunity to gather people together to let them know that, tomorrow is going to be alright if Nigerians can be a little more patient with God.

"I am delighted to be here again. I was here about two or so years ago with the former governor; at that time, I came to pray for some of my members who were kidnapped and they were miraculously rescued. I came to encourage their families to let them know that all will be well.”

"I have come again this time around because it has become more and more clearer to us that, the problem our nation is facing is more than political. Our problems will require a bit of spiritual solution.

“We as a country are blessed; we are blessed with people with great intelligence, we are blessed with all manners of resources and yet we have so many problems.

“And it is not as if people in authority are not trying their best; they are doing as much as humanly possible. And then we found out that when you have problems that are beyond human ability to solve, you call on the Almighty. The reason we call Him Almighty is because He has the power to solve all problems.

“So, we have been going around in our little way to support the efforts of all the various governments and parastatals to call on the Almighty to come to our aid, because we need help. We need help and we need it urgently.

Because, as much as our leaders are doing their very best to help us solve our problems, the problems seem to have persisted, and in some areas, the problems seem to be getting worse. But we trust in Almighty God that, this problems will not last forever. We trust God that the problem will even be over sooner than later.”

"That is why we have been going round holding crusade and the crusade are just a means of gathering people together to let them know tomorrow is going to be alright if we can be a little more patient with God. We believe very strongly that people need this kind of encouragement so that they don’t lose hope.

"Because when they lose hope they do all kinds of strange things; many of our youths for example, are running out of the country, forgetting that those countries they are running to, also have their own problems and then those who cannot run anywhere, we don’t want a situation where people begin to think of taking their own lives.”

"We have had quiet a few examples of people driving in Lagos to the long bridge and jumping into the lagoons. Those of them that were rescued before they drowned said they couldn’t see a future, but we keep on assuring them God is on His throne and he is not going to forsake our nation,” he said.

Governor Uba Sani told the visiting clergy that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s government “needs prayers and support of clerics like you to succeed.”

"You have at critical times in our country, led interventions aimed at directing the political leadership to the path of justice and fairness. Your modern authority is a huge asset and we deeply appreciate you, sir.

“We also believe Sir, that from the remarks you made just now, that our country at this critical time requires intervention from people like you who are tested and who have in the past intervened and helped us to find solutions to our problems. We believe you won’t be tired, we also need an intervention at this critical time.”

“Like you said, many Nigerians are loosing hope and they have been very cautious about the future but like I said, we are going through difficulties because of what happened in the past and right now we have a President who is determined and focused and ready to take the country to a greater height and I have no doubt, with your intervention and prayers, our President will certainly get it right."

“So far, Mr President has taken some very important steps towards moving our country forward but most of these steps are things that might be difficult at this critical time because they are major reforms we need; both economic reforms, as well as social reforms and looking at some of the things that happened in the past hoping to correct them;

“We need some reforms that might be painful at this critical time but I have no doubt that in the nearest future, Nigeria will be better for all of us by the grace of God.”

The governor said, “We will continue to seek for your advice, for your wisdom, for your support and most importantly, for your prayers. We thank you for coming to Kaduna and we will continue to consult you for advice and wisdom.”

Crime / BREAKING: Abducted Ekiti Schoolchildren Finally Regain Freedom by Good01: 8:30am On Feb 04
By Raphael Ogbonnaiye

The kidnapped schoolchildren of Apostolic Faith Group of Schools, Emure-Ekiti, Ekiti State and their teachers have been released.

Daily Trust learnt that the victims regained their freedom around 2.00 a.m on Sunday.

The children and their teachers had been with the kidnappers for about seven days.

In a short video clip obtained by our correspondent, the freed pupils and their teachers sat on the floor, looking tired as a mother lamented the condition of her child in the background.

Daily Trust reported that the abductors had demanded N100 million for the release of the victims, but it was not immediately clear if a ransom was eventually paid or not.

A school bus conveying pupils and some staff members of the school to their respective houses was ambused by gunmen Monday evening.

About 10 occupants of the bus — five schoolchildren, three teachers and the driver — were abducted and whisked away.

There were rumours on Saturday that the victims had been released, which the police debunked.
