By Williams Anuku President Bola Tinubu is elated over the news of troops of Operation Hadarin Daji successfully neutralising a wanted bandit leader, Halilu Sububu. Sububu had been unleashing terror on citizens in Zamfara, Sokoto, and other parts of north-western Nigeria. Beyond Sububu, the troops also killed another terrorist, Sani Wala Burki in a joint operation in Katsina, and busted a terrorist enclave in Kaduna, where 13 abducted students were freed. Tinubu has pledged continuous support to the military, saying the success of the operation gives further assurance that Nigeria’s security operatives are up to the task of ensuring the peace and security of the nation. The successful operations followed the President’s directive to the service chiefs to relocate to the zone until normalcy is restored. “I commend the Military High Command, the intelligence agencies, and the troops for their valiant efforts, synergy and dedication, which have resulted in the recent laudable outcomes. “I also commend the entire security apparatus for the improved security in the nation and enjoins them to sustain their efforts until immediate and latent threats are permanently removed,” the President stated. He reassured the security agencies of his continued support towards achieving the priority objective of keeping the nation safe and secure. https://dailypost.ng/2024/09/14/tinubu-expresses-delight-over-killing-of-notorious-bandit-leader-halilu-sububu/

Pope Francis has denounced the “ugly” killing of Palestinian civilians, including children, by Israel in the Gaza Strip, expressing doubt that the regime wants to end its nearly one-year genocidal war on the besieged enclave. The Pope made the remarks in a press conference aboard his flight back to Rome from Singapore on Friday, after the Israeli military once again bombed a school affiliated with the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) in Gaza, alleging that members of the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas were there. “When you see the bodies of killed children when you see that, under the presumption that some guerrillas are there, a school is bombed, this is ugly,” he said. “It is ugly.” The 87-year-old pontiff also voiced skepticism over Israel’s desire to end its brutal war, saying neither Tel Aviv nor Hamas are taking steps “to make peace.” At least 18 people, including six UNRWA staff members, were killed on Wednesday when Israeli forces bombed al-Jaouni school in central Gaza. Witnesses said the attack on the school-turned-shelter tore women and children to pieces, while UNRWA said the casualties among its staff amounted to the “highest death toll” in a single incident in the 11-month war. The Israeli military claimed that the school had been used by members of the Hamas resistance group to “plan and execute” attacks against the occupation troops. The al-Jaouni school is home to some 12,000 displaced Palestinians, most of them women and children, according to the UN. It has been hit five times since the start of the war in Gaza. Schools in the Gaza Strip have been used to shelter nearly two million displaced Palestinians since Israel launched its campaign of death and destruction in Gaza in early October last year. On Sunday, the Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor said it has documented a dangerous escalation in Israel's systematic policy of targeting schools that have been turned into shelters for displaced civilians across Gaza. The human rights group said in a statement that since the beginning of August, Israel has bombed 16 schools used as shelters in the Gaza Strip, killing 217 Palestinians and injuring hundreds – many of them women and children. Israel unleashed its brutal war on Gaza on October 7 last year after Hamas carried out Operation Al-Aqsa Storm against the usurping entity in retaliation for its intensified atrocities against the Palestinian people. Since the start of the aggression, the Tel Aviv regime has killed 41,182 Palestinians and injured nearly 95,280 others, with most of the victims being women and children. https://www.presstv.ir/Detail/2024/09/14/733272/Palestine-Israel-Pope-Francis-condemn-targeting-Gaza-schools-killing-children-

The judge at the High Court in Nairobi, Kenya, on Friday sentenced Gilbert Masengeli, the acting Inspector-General of Police to six months in prison for defying court orders. It was learned that the police chief repeatedly defied orders to testify about the whereabouts of three men allegedly abducted by police officers. The presiding judge has also suspended the sentence for seven days to give Gilbert Masengeli, the acting inspector general of police, a final chance to appear in court before having to report to jail. The case stems from a lawsuit by the country's main bar association, the Law Society of Kenya, which is seeking a court order for the release of three men who it said were taken by the police in August and have not been heard from since. The three were outspoken on social media platforms in support of mass anti-government protests in June and July. Human rights activists say dozens of people involved in the protests were abducted by state agents and held incommunicado. Most were subsequently released. President William Ruto has promised to look into these accusations, although he has broadly defended the conduct of state security services during the protests. Judge Lawrence Mugambi had asked Masengeli to appear in court seven times to provide the whereabouts of the three, but Masengeli never did. "In the event that he does not submit himself to the Commissioner General (of prisons), the minister of interior must take all steps that are necessary and permissible in law to ensure that Gilbert Masengeli is committed to prison," Mugambi was quoted by Reuters. Police spokeswoman Resila Onyango did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Masengeli's lawyers, in a presentation dated Thursday, asked the judge to suspend his contempt verdict and said attempts to locate the three men were ongoing. https://saharareporters.com/2024/09/13/kenyan-inspector-general-police-bags-six-months-jail-term-defying-court-orders

By Adebayo Folorunsho-Francis The Obi-Datti fundraising team has refuted Monday’s claim by the National Chairman of the Labour Party, Julius Abure, that only Aisha Yesufu and Pastor Itua Ighodalo, were responsible for managing the campaign funds of LP presidential candidate, Peter Obi, at the 2023 election.https://punchng.com/abure-lied-didnt-remit-n1000-challenge-donations-aisha-yesufu/

The erstwhile national chairman of the crisis-ridden Labour Party, Mr Julius Abure has opened up on the allegations of financial mismanagement of the 2023 general election campaign funds levelled against him. SaharaReporters had reported that the stakeholders of the Labour Party during an extended meeting held in Umuahia, Abia State appointed a former minister of finance, Senator Nenadi Usman, to lead a 29-member Caretaker Committee of the party. The Caretaker Committee was charged to rescue the party from its current leadership crisis, and organise a convention where a new leadership of the party would emerge from the Ward to the national stage. However, Abure who was seen in a video where he addressed the allegations of mismanagement of the campaign funds, described those who are accusing him as being “mischievous” adding that the party had at no time participated in the management of the donations and campaign funds. He said, "The party was never involved in the distribution of those resources. Our interest was to see how we can produce a president for the party, however, it was done, we didn't bother ourselves about it; hence, we gave them free hands. Whoever they trusted, whoever they wanted to entrust their resources to, we didn't want to bother ourselves with it. "We followed them sheepishly, we followed them loyally and allowed them to administer the funds of the campaign of the election and so on and so forth. As for the donation the party was not involved in the collection of any donation - campaign donations. "Donations to the campaign were channelled to the following accounts Obi/Datti Ahmed Campaign accounts - Zenith Bank - 124 195 0451; Sterling Bank- 0091 657 896; Heritage Bank - 14 0023 4900; Globus Bank 1000128 194. The signatories to these accounts were Aisha Yesufu and Pastor Ituah Ighodalo. "They were equally responsible for the payment of the polling unit agents. The party did not even bother to pay its agents. We handed over the lists to the Campaign Council and to those who were administering these funds to pay polling unit agents that worked for the presidential election. "Consequently, it is mischievous for any person to accuse me and the party for mismanaging of these funds. At no time did the party engage in any financial transaction as relates to the election." https://saharareporters.com/2024/09/09/how-campaign-funds-were-controlled-peter-obi-aisha-yesufu-pastor-ituah-and-we-followed |

By Jacob Segun Olatunji The high command of the Nigerian Army, has granted approval to 196 soldiers to proceed on terminal leave with effect from November this year. A competent source at the Nigerian Army Headquarters Abuja told the Nigerian Tribune on Sunday that this followed the request made to that effect by the affected Soldiers through their resignation letters addressed to the Chief of Army Staff, COAS, Lt Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja. According to the source, the affected soldiers were drawn from various formations of the army across the country and were mostly all junior officers. The source further explained that the approval had been communicated to the affected Soldiers and their formations through an official memo dated August 23 which was signed by Brigadier General OH Musa and would take effect from November 30, 2024. The memo sighted by our correspondents reads, “In accordance with the provisions of References A and B, the COAS vide Reference C approved the voluntary discharge of the above-named soldier and 195 others listed in Annex A. The soldiers are to proceed on terminal leave with effect from 1 Nov 24 while their disengagement date takes effect from 30 Nov 24. "Accordingly, I am directed to respectfully request you to cause the affected soldiers’ units to ensure that the discharging soldiers complete the following forms as enclosed and forward the same to this Department no later than 6 Sep 24”. Though the Army Headquarters was yet to issue any official statement on this as at the Press time, a very senior officer confirmed the story under anonymity, saying that it was a normal routine procedure in the service globally. The source however dismissed the speculations in some quarters that the affected Soldiers were leaving to join foreign military services because of their poor welfare in the service of the Nigerian Army. "There is no iota of truth in that false narrative that the affected Soldiers are leaving to enlist in foreign military services because of poor welfare, their request and the consequent approval are the routine best practice in the service,” the source added. https://tribuneonlineng.com/army-approves-terminal-leave-for-196-soldiers/

From Desmond Mgboh, Kano Senator Musa’ud El-Jilbrin Doguwa was the Senator that represented Kano South between 1999 to 2003. He was also a former Kano State chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), among several positions he has occupied. He defected to the APC in 2019, just after the presidential elections. Recently, he ended his marriage to the APC and returned back to the PDP. In this interview, he gave reasons he returned back to the PDP and offerred insights into his relationship with Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the leader of the NNPP and Vice President Atiku Abubakar. He also commented on the crisis surrounding Nyesom Wike in the PDP. But most importantly, he outlined steps on how Atiku and the PDP can reclaim the Presidency of Nigeria come in 2027. Excerpts: You have just renounced your membership of the All Progressives Congress, decamping to your original party, the Peoples Democratic Party. What are the political issues that informed this move? My journey to the APC started after the party dissolved our leadership of the PDP in the state. I was the state chairman of the party as at then. In fact, I was the one who went to Kwankwaso’s house, out of respect, to re-register him back to the PDP . But immediately we registered him back to the PDP, the national secretariat of our party took a decision to appoint a caretaker committee and the majority of the caretaker committee were members of Kwankwaso’s faction of the party. What made matters worse was that during that time, nobody cared to call us – myself, my executive and a large population of my followers to explain to us the reason behind the decision to nullify our leadership of the party at that time. To us, it was obvious that the leadership of the PDP as at that time was less interested in us and just interested in receiving Kwankwaso at all costs. And so, we decided that the only option left was to move to the APC. When we decamped to the APC, we worked assiduously to make sure that the party wins the elections in 2019. With the boost of our coming to the APC, they had the confidence that they would win the elections that year and God’s willing that happened. Ganduje was returned to office for the second tenure. However, as time went by, we were confronted with a lot of challenges in APC. You see somebody like me with a lot of political experience and followership should be carried along by his own party. If you failed to manage him, if you refused to give him what is due to him, if you failed to assign him with political and party duties and responsibilities that can make him relevant, then there is no way he can be fulfilled in your party. That is what happened. That is why at some point in time; we said to ourselves, let us go back to where we belong, especially as Kwankwaso and his faction, who are responsible for our exit from the PDP have also parted ways with the PDP. In brief, that was what happened. From what you have recalled, can we agree that your stay in APC was wasted political years, without any fulfillment for you and your followers? Even if you had stayed in your house all those years and did nothing, you cannot say they were wasted years. They would not have been wasted. So, our stay in APC cannot be rightly termed as wasted years. They respected us to a certain level, but what I am saying is that they undervalued our political worth and contributions to the growth and success of the party. You see, like myself I was a Senator of the Federal Republic for Kano South, the first Senator of my area in this Republic and I have a lot followership in my Senatorial district up till date. But they did not accord me the political respect. I have a huge network of friendship and associates that cut across the country. For you to relegate me to a local political player, who plays at the state level, you are not being fair to me. The APC simply denied me the political visibility and recognition that was due to a former senator of my calibre. The sad truth is that we were in APC as a party by mere name, we were not there by action or activity. Let us honestly look at the PDP that you joined and its chances of fulfilling your political expectations today. The PDP in Kano State has been gravely devalued, almost to a zero level especially by the Kwankwaso-inspired Shagagi’s faction, which painted the party with several litigations, only to pull out to the NNPP at the last minute. Do you see PDP as a party that can make any impact in the politics of the state anymore? Yes! Absolutely yes!! Don’t forget, and I encourage you to go and take statistics of the membership of both the NNPP and APC in this state. Anybody that you can count to be worth in the Kano APC today was a member of the PDP. Anybody that you can count to be of worth in the NNPP today was a former member of PDP. They were all previous members of the PDP. It was the PDP that gave them the leverage to become what they are today in politics. So, I feel that all what the PDP needs in Kano State and in the nation in general is simply confidence building. The PDP simply have to build back confidence in the minds of the people and the people would return back home to their old party. People don’t throw away their roots. They actually leave because the roots is unable to cater for their momentary aspirations. But can easily comeback if the root is ready to accommodate their dreams. At the moment, do I need to tell you that APC has a lot of challenges with the Nigerian people? Saying this is stating the obvious. Even the blind can see that APC has already ruined their contract with Nigerians. You also know that NNPP administration in the state has a lot of challenges with the people of Kano already and … https://thesun.ng/2027-once-opposition-parties-merge-apc-is-gone-senator-el-jilbrin-doguwa/

No fewer than 196 soldiers in the North-East and other theatres of operation have applied to the Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Taoreed Lagbaja, for voluntary retirement. The action comes amid worsening security challenges the military is currently combating in most parts of the country. Sources had told SaharaReporters that most of the soldiers resigning had indicated interest to join the military forces of other countries, including the British Army, Ukrainian Army, and other Commonwealth nations. The soldiers, drawn from various formations of the army across the country according to the list obtained on Saturday, are all junior cadres. The Chief of Army Staff has since approved their formal disengagement. The list of the exiting soldiers did not distinguish between those embarking on voluntary retirement and those leaving the army on medical grounds. However, none of them had neither attained retirement age nor the mandatory years of service. The approval of their voluntary disengagement dated August 23 was signed by Brigadier OH Musa. There have been allegations of corruption in the Nigerian Army which some of the soldiers have blamed on the issue – soldiers overstaying in the North-East. According to some soldiers, the army is the epitome of deep-seated corruption. They noted that the corruption is affecting the prosecution of the anti-terrorism war in the North-East. They complained that they were being forced to confront Boko Haram militants, adding that their low morale and lack of willingness to continue to fight made it possible for terrorists to dislodge some military camps recently. They complained of abandonment and accused the military authorities of keeping them on the war front beyond their approved period of stay. SaharaReporters recently reported moves by many soldiers to resign over poor welfare, inadequate equipment, and lack of motivation within the Nigerian Army. Multiple sources who spoke to the newspaper had expressed frustration with the Nigerian government's failure to provide them with decent living conditions, modern weapons, and adequate compensation to combat a series of non-state actors ravaging the country. “A set of 27 personnel are leaving and this set is only medical corps. Infantry corps and armoured corps are still coming. So many more will leave. “Soldiers are leaving because the work is no longer sustainable. People are running every day to join British Army, Ukraine, Russia, Commonwealth army and the likes. That's what is happening now,” one of the sources in the Nigerian military had informed SaharaReporters. “Even the planned protest, many soldiers are praying it should happen,” another source added. https://saharareporters.com/2024/09/07/breaking-another-196-nigerian-soldiers-tender-resignation-letters-army-chief-lagbaja |
By Ifreke Inyang The presidency has denied that a yacht spotted in St. Tropez, a coastal town in France, belongs to President Bola Tinubu. This follows several reports and speculation on social media. They claimed that a “presidential yacht belonging to the Nigerian government is being used for vacation at St. Tropez.” However, one of President Tinubu’s media aides, Otega Ogra, took to his verified X page to debunk the reports. Ogra insisted that “the yacht belongs to a private individual and not President Tinubu or the Nigerian Navy.” According to him, flags used by the president or armed forces do not contain a coat of arms like the one on the yacht. He added: “It is not uncommon for luxury yachts to fly the flag of the owner’s country as well as the flag of the country in which they are registered. “The official Nigerian flag is Green-White-Green without a coat of arms in the middle. Flags representing the Nigerian President or the Armed Forces do not contain a coat of arms in the centre. Placing anything in the centre of the flag is a clear deviation.” https://dailypost.ng/2024/09/07/yacht-in-france-with-nigerian-flag-not-for-tinubu-presidency/

By Rilwan Muhammad Reactions are trailing the announcement of the Special Adviser to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Media & Publicity, Chief Ajuri Ngelale, to embark on an indefinite leave of absence. Daily Trust had reported how Ajuri, in a statement on his Facebook page on Saturday, said he had informed the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, of his intention to proceed on an indefinite leave of absence, citing health matters involving his nuclear family. The statement read, “On Friday, I submitted a memo to the Chief of Staff to the President informing my office that I am proceeding on an indefinite leave of absence to frontally deal with medical matters presently affecting my immediate, nuclear family. "While I fully appreciate that the ship of state waits for no man, this agonizing decision — entailing a pause of my functions as the Special Adviser to the President on Media & Publicity and Official Spokesperson of the President; Special Presidential Envoy on Climate Action, and Chairman, Presidential Steering Committee on Project Evergreen — was taken after significant consultations with my family over the past several days as a vexatious medical situation has worsened at home. "I look forward to returning to full-time national service when time, healing, and fate permit. I respectfully ask for some privacy for my family and I during this time.” he said. Following the development, some Nigerians have taken to the social media platforms to share their thoughts. On X, formerly Twitter, Senator Shehu Sani @ShehuSani wrote: “Ajuri can now rest well, sleep well, eat well, switch off his phone and even add some weight.” Jaafar Jaafar @JaafarSJaafar: “Ajuri Ngelale is the first presidential spokesman whose television face and Oyibo accent — not PR or media expertise — earned him the plum job. Tinubu’s family brought him for cosmetic effect to smarten the president’s geriatric outlook and gutteral voice. But soon afterwards, his inflated sense of importance and domineering attitude put him at odds with other powers around the president.” Queen Bee @QueenBee_: “Maybe he wasn’t lying enough as required and he was asked to step aside for Onanuga to assume full lying responsibilities.” Safety Cabal @gabriel_bolatit: “We are not going to miss him maybe for appointment announcement sha.” FEJIRO @realFejiro: “It’s no surprise to hear that Ajuri Ngelale has resigned. Do you realize how difficult it is to defend someone like Tinubu? You would have to abandon all sense of integrity and logic to do so. You’d end up calling black white and white black. Best of luck to Ajuri Ngelale!” Ifeanyi Ejechi @ifeanyi_ej53035: “What kind of semantics is “indefinite leave of absence*’? Okay! I can now understand. It means Ajuri Ngelale was gently shown the door, without necessarily being pushed out.” Adamu Ibrahim Aliyu @hrh_aia: “I have a lot of respect for Ajuri, because he has proven to be one of the spokespersons that have regards for the citizens. Very careful with his choice of words when addressing the citizens. I wish him the best in his future endeavours.” Dr Croc @MgajiInnocent: “Ajuri Ngelale is just 37 year old, but he has accomplished a lot. At first, it’s music to listen to him, but as you listen the more, his voice becomes boring and the lies becomes apparent. This is coming from me (as an APC card carrying member).” Emma ik Umeh (Tcee) @emmaikumeh: “Ajuri Ngelale is tired of telling Nigerians lies. It’s not easy defending this government” Shafi’i Hamidu @shafiihamidu: “Tinubu government must have frustrated Ajuri. He is the best spokesman in this government and he speaks with facts 💯. It is unfortunate he left Baba,” Meanwhile, Facebook users have also expressed different views. Mazi Ifeanyi Nweze said: “His conscience no allow him to continue defending obvious failure of a president. He wants to exonerate himself from the mess they call governance in Nigeria. Good of him, he can still regain his image and dignity.” Hamma S. Idi: “I salute the courage of this young man despite the benefits that he has been enjoying and he has decided to leave. Bravo” Okpueze Emerueh: “Kudos to him. He has a conscience. It’s very difficult to defend a clueless government. Let the Lagos boys take over as usual.” Muhammad Gaddafi Rabiu: “The biggest PR has resigned. He may be tired too for incompetencies. May his former principal be next to resign.” https://dailytrust.com/its-difficult-to-defend-tinubus-govt-netizens-react-to-ajuris-leave-of-absence/

By Kayode Oyero The Director General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has urged politicians in Nigeria to stop weaponising insecurity against their opposition in office. She spoke before a room filled with lawyers at the Eko Hotel & Suites in Lagos during the opening ceremony of the 2024 Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) on Sunday. The former Nigerian finance minister delivered a keynote address entitled, ‘A Social Contract For Nigeria’s Future’. “We cannot have socio-economic development without security. We certainly cannot have security without development,” the WTO chief said. “We all know that security has been weaponised in our country for political purposes by political actors, leading partly to the situation we have now. "We have politicians who believe that the best way to make their opponents look bad is to instigate insecurity making it look like they can’t govern, regardless of whether this leads to loss of lives and property of innocent Nigerians. This has to stop.” 'Oil Theft Intolerable’ The WTO boss said there are enough technological innovations to track crude oil theft and bring those behind the act to justice in Nigeria. She said those responsible for stopping the “intolerable” action of crude oil theft no longer have excuses. Okonjo-Iweala said, “A second aspect of security relates to the security of national assets. Nigerians have seen for years how organised crude oil theft on a massive scale seriously undermines the economic and financial health of the country. "All Nigerians must agree that stealing of our national assets of any type is intolerable and must be stopped.” She said oil theft has hampered the strengthening of the foreign reserves. “There is so much technology available now to track such theft and there must be no more excuses for inaction.” The event with the theme, ‘Pressing Forward; A National Posture to Rebuilding Nigeria’, featured stellar personalities at home and abroad. Former President of Ghana John Mahama and the President of the Court of Appeal of Nigeria, Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem, were physically at the event while President Bola Tinubu was represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima. Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun; Senate President Godswill Akpabio and his counterpart in the lower chamber Tajudeen Abbas were also represented at the event. https://www.channelstv.com/2024/08/25/this-has-to-stop-okonjo-iweala-asks-politicians-to-stop-weaponising-insecurity/

NPC disclosed that the most significant call was related to the 25% threshold for Abuja as the Federal Capital Territory. The National Peace Committee (NPC) has stated that it was pressured to get the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to either halt collation of results or cancel the 2023 Presidential Election which brought President Bola Tinubu. NPC disclosed that the most significant call was related to the 25% threshold for Abuja as the Federal Capital Territory. deficit is widespread, the culture of impunity and lack of compliance with laws. The mandate is founded on the need to promote peace, prevent widespread violence and encourage parties and candidates to uphold the rule of law. “The NPC has no mandate to arrest violators of process or interfere with the constitutional duties of INEC. It is set up to provide moral intervention, defined by mediation and moral persuasion to ensure that there is peace. It is also expected to, on behalf of public interest, speak truth to power when things are going terribly wrong. "After the presidential elections, the NPC has continued with its engagements with political parties, youth and women led groups, persons with disabilities, the security agencies, traditional rulers and religious leaders, including the Independent State-based Peace Architectures. “Most people are not aware that the NPC provides only a moral intervention, and it has no constitutional duty to arrest, punish or prosecute any citizen for any wrongdoing. Rather, the Committee has the moral obligation to encourage, persuade and appeal to political actors, community leaders and other stakeholders on the importance of peace. "This limited awareness has forced some Nigerians to question the significance of engaging with the NPC if only what the committee brings to the table is moral persuasion. This is a challenge for the work of the Committee” the report added. https://saharareporters.com/2024/08/17/we-were-under-pressure-ask-inec-cancel-2023-polls-which-brought-tinubu-gen-abdulsalamis

By Baba Martins The Federal Government has told those seeking regime change to wait till the next election in 2027. Dele Alake, Minister of Solid Minerals, said this after the inaugural Council of State meeting under President Bola Tinubu. Among those who attended the meeting at the Presidential Villa were former Presidents Muhammadu Buhari and Goodluck Jonathan. Former presidents Yakubu Gowon and Abdulsalami Abubakar also joined the meeting virtually, while former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Ibrahim Babangida were absent. The meeting of the National Council of State holds to advise the President on policy decisions and other matters that the sitting president might put before them. Members of the Council include the President, Vice President, former Presidents and Heads of State, the Senate President, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, state governors, the Speaker of the House of Representatives and the Attorney-General of the Federation. Addressing State House Correspondents after the meeting that lasted for over three hours, Alake said, “Matters of State were discussed in a robust manner and the National Security Adviser was on hand to present the security situation of the country and he did inform the Council of State about the Pre, during and post events of the last protest which I do not call a protest. "I call it a movement to effect a change of regime by force which was also resisted. The council thanked Nigerians at large for resisting an unconstitutional move to change government. If anybody is not satisfied with the government, the current administration, there is always an election coming, so you wait for election and cast your vote. .The NSA brief the council on the security situation and laid bare… So after the NSA briefing, he allayed everybody’s fears and spoke on the tightness of the security around the country and also re assured all that nobody will be allowed to truncate our hard earned democracy. Any change of government has to be through the ballot and not through the barrel of the gun, or through insurrection or through any other unconstitutional means, only through the ballot box can any government be changed and re assured on the security readiness of all security agencies in the country to secure our territorial integrity and to protect Nigerians democracy.” Alake added that the presentations by seven ministers was to let the Council of State know the progress being made in each sector of the economy. He said, the “Agenda, is on economic diversification. And that’s why I was there. That’s why Agric was there. That’s why all the other ministers you know that constitute, or the ministries that constitutes the plank of the Renewed Hope Agendas, economic diversification and transformation.” Council pass vote of confidence on Tinubu On his part, The Chairman of the Governor’s Forum and Governor of Kwara State Abdulrahman AbdulRazaq said the Council also passed a vote of Confidence on President Bola Tinubu.

The commission gave the breakdown of the salary and allowances of each senator as: Basic Salary – ₦168,866:70; Motor Vehicle Fuelling and Maintenance Allowance – ₦126,650:00; Personal Assistant – ₦42,216:66; Domestic Staff -₦126,650:00; Entertainment – ₦50,660:00; Utilities – ₦50,660:00; Newspapers/Periodicals – ₦25,330:00; Wardrobe – ₦42,216,66:00; House Maintenance – ₦8,443.33:00 and Constituency Allowance – ₦422,166:66; respectively. RMAFC chair M. B. Shehu, in a statement on Tuesday, made the clarification “in view of the recent statement made by Mr. Shehu Sani, a former Senator of the Federal Republic who was reported to have disclosed to the public that each Senator collects monthly running cost of ₦13.5 M in addition to the monthly ₦750, 000.00 prescribed by the Commission”. Shehu said RMAFC does not have the constitutional powers to enforce compliance with the proper implementation of the remuneration package of lawmakers. “This lacuna is, however, being addressed by the National Assembly,” he said. The RMAFC chief said some allowances are regular while others are non-regular. “Regular allowances are paid regularly with basic salary while non-regular allowances are paid as when due. “For instance, Furniture allowance (₦6,079,200:00) and Severance Gratuity (₦6,079,200:00) are paid once in every tenure and Vehicle allowance (₦8,105,600:00) which is optional is a loan which the beneficiary has to pay before leaving office,” he added. Shehu said that aside from the president, vice president, senate president, and speaker of the House of Representatives, all public and legislative officers are no longer provided with housing, as was the case in the past. On Sunday, the Senate tackled former President Olusegun Obasanjo over his comment that lawmakers in both chambers of the National Assembly (NASS) fix their salaries. Senate spokesman Yemi Adaramodu challenged anyone with credible evidence to present contrary facts, describing any suggestion that the National Assembly fixes its salaries as “uncharitable and satanic.” Adaramodu said the red chamber only receives the salary allocated to it by the RMAFC in line with the constitution. On Friday, Obasanjo, Nigeria’s democratically elected President from May 1999 to May 2007, said it was “immoral” for federal lawmakers to determine their salaries and allowances. Instead, he said, the RMAFC should be saddled with this responsibility. https://www.channelstv.com/2024/08/13/each-senator-earns-%e2%82%a61m-per-month-says-revenue-commission/

The Take It Back movement — one of the organisers of the just concluded 10-day nationwide #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protests against hardship on Saturday vowed to return to the streets with a 10-million-person march if President Bola Tinubu fails to address their demands. For the past 10 days, protesters have taken to the streets of Abuja and other major Nigerian cities, demanding the reinstatement of fuel subsidies and reduced electricity tariffs, among other grievances. They have expressed frustration with President Tinubu's apparent disregard for their concerns, despite their persistent demonstrations. Abiodun Sanusi, an activist, said the movement would pause protests temporarily, but vowed to return with a bigger and more determined crowd if demands are not met. He said, “Earlier on, we declared 10 days of rage to end bad governance in Nigeria. However, it is now clear that President Bola Tinubu is not ready to listen to the demands of Nigerians. “Today is the final day of the 10 days of rage, but we are promising the Nigerian government and President Tinubu that we will come back until he accedes to our demands." “We will return to the streets, and this time, we will be more than this. We will be declaring a 10-million-person march across the 36 states of Nigeria and the FCT,” Sanusi added. Thousands of protesters flooded the major streets of Yola on Saturday, passionately calling for President Bola Tinubu's swift intervention to address the socio-economic crisis gripping the nation. A group of concerned Nigerian women under the aegis of Women Against Hunger had also held a massive rally against the current economic crisis in Nigeria. The women who were singing in front of the National Stadium in Abuja called the attention of the President Bola Tinubu's government to the hunger which Nigerians are currently facing due to his failed policies. https://saharareporters.com/2024/08/10/take-it-back-movement-vows-return-10million-man-march-if-tinubu-fails-address-demands

By Seun Adeuyi Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mele Kyari, has dismissed allegations that staff of the company are behind substandard importation of petroleum products into the country. Speaking Wednesday when he appeared before a Senate Ad-hoc Committee over alleged economic sabotage in the petroleum industry, Kyari said he as the CEO, as well as the NNPCL had faced undue media attacks from persons doing everything to create the impression that the company is sabotaging the nation’s economy. "NNPCL is faithful and will not lie to the country. We are not criminals and we are not thieves. We will protect our dignity so we can serve this country,” he said. Speaking further, he revealed that the oil and gas industry is bleeding, adding that there were things they knew but could not talk about in public until “the time comes”. This comes following recent controversies trailing the company and its operations. Speaking at the house of representatives in July, President of the Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, reportedly said some personnel of NNPCL, oil traders and terminals have opened a blending plant in Malta. The billionaire said the areas of the blending plants are known. "Some of the terminals, some of the NNPCL people and some traders have opened a blending plant somewhere off Malta. We all know these areas. We know what they are doing,” the billionaire reportedly said. Reacting to the allegation, Kyari, in a post via X, said he was not aware of any employee of the NNPCL that owns or operates a blending plant in Malta or anywhere else in the world. He, however, said blending plants in Malta or any part of the world has no influence over NNPC’s business operations and strategic actions.

By Adekunle Sulaimon, Dennis Naku Tensions escalated in Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital, on Tuesday as the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protests entered the sixth day. Protesters besieged a mansion in Ada George, Ohio/Akpor Local Government Area of the state owned by a former governor of the state and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. The mansion was targeted by over 50 protesters. The group marched from Agip Junction and gathered in front of Wike’s house, singing the old national anthem, “Arise, O Compatriots.” Armed policemen formed a barrier to keep the protesters at a distance and prevented them from approaching the mansion. The protesters were blocked from getting close to the property by an Armoured Personnel Carrier stationed nearby. After about 49 minutes, the protesters dispersed and continued their march. They also caused a stir when they passed Hyper City Mall, which belongs to Wike, but were met with a heavy police presence. The spokesperson for the state police command, Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed that no property belonging to Wike was attacked. She stated, “The protesters only marched past the building. The police ensured they remained on the other side of the road and did not confront them.” https://punchng.com/endbadgovernanceinnigeria-protesters-storm-wikes-residence-in-rivers/?amp

By Timi Owolabi Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed has expressed his disappointment over President Bola Tinubu’s recent nationwide broadcast, stating that no consultation was made with state governors prior to the address. According to him, the President’s speech did not reflect the reality on ground, adding that there is a huge gap between the government and the governed in the country. The governor spoke while addressing journalists at the end of an emergency security council meeting held at the Government House, Bauchi, on Monday. DAILY POST reports that the state government declared a 24-hour curfew in Katagum LGA on Monday following the escalation of crisis in Azare, headquarters of Katagum, where hoodlums took advantage of the protest to vandalise the Government House Annex and the house of a former deputy governor of the state, broke shops, and looted properties. Mohammed, when asked what he has to say about the President ‘s address, said, “I’m not a spokesperson of the Presidency but I certainly know that the speech of the President was very empty. “It has rather escalated the whole situation because he would have listened to the governors who are his first line of charge, first line of commanders at the sub-national level so that we can give him what is going on because we also listen to our local government chairmen. "All the President’s commanders, the Police commissioners, Brigade commanders, we are working together with all of them. “However, they went and spoke in a manner that has not shown empathy or sympathy to the youth.” Addressing the destruction of government properties in Katagum LGA, Mohammed said the state government had an extended emergency security council meeting that brought all the stakeholders, including security agencies, traditional institutions and religious groups to address the situation. He assured the people of the state that his administration will not allow the ongoing nationwide protest against bad governance, tagged #EndBadGovernmentinNigeria, to escalate. This is as he urged citizens of the state to remain law-abiding and exercise restraint by ensuring sustainable peace and stability in the state. According to him, the peaceful protest is a clear demonstration that government at all levels has failed in the discharge of constitutional and statutory responsibilities. https://dailypost.ng/2024/08/06/tinubu-did-not-consult-govs-before-broadcast-bala-mohammed-criticizes-presidents-address/
