sapientia1: No! No!! No!!! bro, for the first time u made a wrong analysis, I'll take it as a mistake tho, ONE: 60% of pre degree students didn't chose Linguistics, cos like 60% actually went for Eng n Intl studies, almost 20% went for History and almost 20% went for Linguistics n comm studies. French was relatively low with less than 4% applicants. 2: About the subject combo, there's nothing wrong with it, if he can't gain admission with a: eng, lit, govt crs into Linguistics, then I don't think there's any other Arts n Humanity course he can gain admission into with the subject combos. All of my friends that gained admission followed that combination, but what I can just say is that his score is kinda low, cos there might still be like 200 applicants that fared better than him out there waiting for admission into the same course. He should just step up and work towards his admission! Bottomline is that, nothing is wrong with either his results nor combinations.Boomboom Thk u bro i always stand to be corrected. But if he had taken any language subjects he would have been considered. My course is history and Int'l studies, I was given admission aheead of ppl who scored more than I did, my score aggregate was 56.5% and two my friends who scored 61% ,and 65% respectively. My combination was Eng,govt,Econs and maths. But because of maths I was considered ahead of my peeps. They their combo as Eng,lit, crs and govt |

Boomboom Jonathan to meet ASUU November 4 *Universities may re-open next week REPORT BY SCAN NEWS PRESIDENT GOODLUCK JONATHAN Scan-News can authoritatively reveal that in a last ditch effort to resolve the ASUU strike, President Goodluck Jonathan will on Monday, November 4, meet with the leadership of ASUU at the Presidential Villa. This was part of the resolutions of the meeting between the ASUU leadership, Vice President Namadi Sambo and the Supervising Minister of Education on Tuesday as was first reported by this medium. An official of the Vice President’s office who pleaded anonymity told Scan News that all hands are now on deck to ensure that the universities resume next week. The official stated that the Vice President and the Supervising Minister of Education have made head-way in resolving the strike, but the final involvement of the President is to show ASUU that there is the commitment of the Federal Government at the highest level. It was learnt that the President has been fully briefed on steps taken by Vice President Namadi Sambo and the Supervising Minister of Education to get to this point. It was learnt that the President will at next Monday’s meeting present to the ASUU leadership the administration’s last concession for them to call off the prolonged strike. A source at the Presidential Villa noted that if ASUU fails to call off, the Federal Government will then resort to plan B, which will be to compulsorily open the universities, using the instrumentality of the governing councils and the school managements. Already, most of the governing councils of the universities have started meeting to work out modalities for the compulsory re-opening of the universities should ASUU fail to honour the personal request of President Jonathan. Scan News gathered that the Supervising Minister of Education, Barr. Nyesom Wike and the Vice Chancellors of Public Universities also discussed the re-opening of the schools last Monday. Most of the Vice Chancellors suggested the compulsory re-opening of the schools, should the last ditch efforts fail. It was gathered that security report available to the Presidency may have necessitated this line of action to salvage the universities system from the direction it is facing at present. |

Boomboom FG, ASUU agreed to end STRIKE; finetune grey areas of agreement Indication emerged on Tuesday that the Federal Government and Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) may have agreed to end their face-off. The meeting between the Supervising Minister of Education, Mr Nyesom Wike and ASUU, led by its president, Dr Nasir Isa Fagge, held behind closed-door, was said to be productive. Both parties came out from the meeting beaming with smiles, an indication that some compromises had been made, though they refused to speak with journalists. Nigerian Tribune, however, gathered that ASUU had presented its position on some of the grey areas in the agreement to the minister. While the minister was to convey this to President Goodluck Jonathan for approval, ASUU was to convene its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, where decision on suspension of the about four-month-old strike would be decided. Sources also told the Nigerian Tribune that the minister had already briefed the vice chancellors on the implementation of some of the issues agreed upon, as they held a closed-door meeting on Monday. Also, on Tuesday, Vice President Namadi Sambo, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, met with Wike and other stakeholders in the education sector, in a move to end the strike. In the brief meeting was the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Professor Julius Okojie; the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Professor Isaac Adewole, among others. It was not known however whether ASUU was represented at the meeting. It was not also known what was discussed at the meeting, as none of the participants was willing to speak with State House reporters at the end. |
Boomboom ASUU STRIKE : FG rejects Obasanjo, Shagari’s intervention Two former presidents, Gen. Olusegun Obasanjo and Alhaji Shehu Shangari’s decision to intervention in the rift between the Federal Government and the Academics Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, over the lingering strike in the nation’s universities was rejected by the Goodluck Jonathan-led Federal Government. The reasons for FG’s action is yet unknown as at the time of this report. The ASUU has shunned classes for almost four months. All initial efforts to end the strike has been futile. Details later |
Boomboom ASUU STRIKE: FG in crucial meeting with ASUU today •‘Talks with VCs fruitful REPORT ACCORDING TO NIGERIAN TRIBUNE Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) will meet today in a last ditch efforts to resolve the lingering crisis in the University System. As a prelude to the meeting scheduled for 10.00a.m today, the Federal Government was locked in a meeting with the Vice Chancellors of the federal universities for about two hours on Monday. Supervising Minister of Education, Mr Nyesom Wike, after the closed door meeting declined comment to newsmen, but told journalists that the government would be meeting with the leadership of ASUU today. Wike, who chaired the meeting held at the auditorium of the National Universities Commission (NUC), had said the meeting was a normal interaction with the vice chancellors. Before the commencement of the meeting, Wike excused journalists, personal assistants, his aides and all others, except the vice chancellors, ostensibly to prevent leakage of their deliberations. However, Nigerian Tribune gathered that the meeting was to see how the universities that have been shut for about four months now could be reopened to students as well as fine-tune discussion on the position of the government against the meeting with ASUU today. Wike had last week assured that the protracted strike would soon be called off based on the outcome of the last parley with ASUU leadership. Nigerian Tribune had reported that based on the fresh agreement between the Federal Government and ASUU, the leadership of ASUU was to go back to brief its members at a meeting after the Eid-el-kabir celebration. It was gathered, on Monday, that the meeting today would afford the ASUU to report to the government about the position of the union on the offers by the Federal Government so far. The fresh accord struck by the Vice-President Namadi Sambo with the union, government had agreed to increase the N30 billion already released for the payment of academic earned allowance to N40 billion. According to sources, the government also agreed that the N40 billion should be regarded only as first instalment, and not a once-and-for-all payment. The memorandum drafted at the of the meeting indicated that the government would top it up with further releases once universities are through with the disbursement of N40 million. Accordingly, vice chancellors were urged to expedite the disbursement within the shortest possible time using guiding templates that have been sent by the Committee of Vice Chancellors to them. On the implementation of the Needs Assessment to Nigerian Universities report, it was stated that the government was cognisant and mindful of the ability of universities to effectively and efficiently utilise the N100 billion fund immediately, hence that figure. “However, in addition to this N100 billion dedicated and already to be made available for 2013, N200 billion (increased from N150 billion previously agreed) will now be earmarked in the 2014 budget, as well as each of the following three-four years until the universities are brought to world-class standard. Also, on project prioritisation, universities would now be allowed to determine their priorities and not be “rail-roaded” into implementing a pre-determined set of projects with respect to the NEEDS assessment. Decisions are not to be centralised. The government also assured that the operations of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) would not be impaired, and that the regular TETFund intervention disbursement to universities woul continue, unaffected. “So, the NEEDS assessment capital outlays are in addition to regular TETFund intervention.” Although, the President of ASUU, Dr Nasir Isa Fagge, could not confirm the willingness of ASUU to attend today’s meeting, but the Nigerian Tribune gathered that zonal meetings of ASUU in their various universities were held last week to collate opinion of the members of the government offers. |

Boomboom ASUU STRIKE: We‘re yet to receive Suswam C’ttee’s N100bn – VCs The University Vice Chancellor has cried out that the much poblicised N100bn has not been received after 7 weeks the FG committee head by Benue Governor, Gabriel Suswam claimed that the money has been disbursed to Universities. From the repor below according to Vanguard Newspaper, Vice Chancellors of Universities claimed such money is still a mirage. Read report below according to Vanguard Seven weeks after the Federal Government announced that it has commenced implementation of the agreement signed with the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, by disbursing N100 billion to 59 public universities, the affected tertiary institutions have raised alarm that they are yet to receive the fund. The Governor Gabriel Suswan-led Presidential Implementation Committee on Needs of Nigerian Universities was said to have sourced the fund within 16 days of its inauguration from the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, and other government agencies. The committee thereafter adopted a sharing formula for each of the university based on student population and the depth of infrastructural decay. The money was meant for the refurbishment/renovation and provision of new facilities such as hostels, lecture theatres and lecture rooms, laboratories and libraries in the universities. Reacting to report that the money has been released to the universities, Vice Chancellor of one of the universities in the South East said “the Federal Government has only sent us a memo through the Ministry of Education that we are getting N650 million from the funds. Until we get alert into the university’s account, we will know how sincere the government is but presently we are yet to receive the money.” Similarly, the Vice Chancellor of another university in the South West disclosed that the N1.2 billion earmarked for his university has not been paid either as cheque or cash into the university’s account. It was gathered from the committee that 13 Federal universities have been left out of the initial disbursement. They are Federal University, Gashua; Federal University, Dutse, Jigawa State; Federal University, Dutsin-ma, Katsina; Federal University, Kashere, Gombe State; Federal University, Lafia, Nasarawa State; Federal University, Lokoja, Kogi State; Federal University, Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi State; and Federal University, Otuoke, Bayelsa State. Others are FederalUniversity, Wukari, TarabaState; FederalUniversity, Birnin-Kebbi, KebbiState; FederalUniversity, Gusau, ZamfaraState; FederalUniversity, Oye-Ekiti, EkitiState; and PoliceAcademy, Wudil. Vanguard learnt that these universities were left out because they have just been established by the present administration between 2011 and 2013 which committed trillions of naira in their establishment and that there was no need for additional funding. Five state universities that were also unlucky are: BukarAbbaIbrahimUniversity, Damaturu, YobeState; North-WestUniversity, KanoState; SokotoStateUniversity; Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijebu-Ode; OgunState; TechnicalUniversity, Ibadan, OyoState. Top five Federal universities that got the lion’s share of the money were: University of Ibadan, UI, with students population of 33,481 which got N3.250 billion; University of Benin, UNIBEN, with students population of 56,501 got N3.200 billion; Ahmadu Bello University, ABU, with students population of 49,436 got N3.200 billion; University of Port-Harcourt, UNIPORT, with students population of 53,288 got N3.050 billion; while University of Lagos, UNILAG, with students population of 49,179 also got N3.050 billion, Also, the state universities that benefitted are: Ebonyi State University, EBSU, with students population of 23,437 got N3.050 billion; Niger Delta University, NDU, Wilberforce Island with 12,793 students population received N2.800 billion; Umaru Musa Yar’Adua University, Katsina with students population of 4,753 received N2.450 billion; Gombe State University, GSU, with students population of 4,383 got N2.450 billion, whereas the Lagos State University, LASU, Ojo with the highest students population of 90,885 among all the considered universities got N1.300 billion |

BOOMBOOM ASUU Strike end looms; Lecturers await FG to sign new agreement reached to call-off strike A dramatic turn of event on the strike ongoing in universities may actually be the end to the over 100days strike embarked upon by the Academics Staff Union of Universities, ASUU. Report according to impeccable media sources has it the both ASUU and the Federal Government have sheathe their sword and an agreement has been reached and that the ASUU is awaiting the Federal Government to sign the new agreement reached to enable it call off the strike. Our Source disclosed that the Federal Government has agreed to be spending the sum of N200bn annually for the next four years in the quest to raise the standard of our varsity education to the world class standard. This is in addition to the N100 billion dedicated and already made available for 2013. The government has also increased to N40 billion as a first installment, funds for the payment of earned allowances to the striking lecturers, an improvement from the N30 billion previously released. This information is contained in an internal Federal University of Otuoke statement by Professor Bolaji Aluko, its Vice-Chancellor, seen on Wednesday night by SaharaReporters. On the earned allowances, he explained, “Government will top it up with further releases once universities are through with the disbursement of this new figure of N40 million, so Vice-Chancellors are urged to expedite this disbursement within the shortest possible time using guiding templates that have been sent by the CVC,” the circular said. Professor Aluko said the development followed meetings on September 19 and Oct 11 of representatives of the Association of Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities, led by CVC Chairman, Prof. Hamisu of ATBU and ASUU Representatives led by its President, Dr. N. Fagge with the Vice-President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Arc. Namadi. Sambo, Minister of Education Barr. N. Wike and others. Of great interest to stakeholders, Vice-President Sambo, appealing to ASUU to call off the strike, apologized for the “take-it-or-leave-it”; comments credited to the Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala at the onset of the strike. The Minister did not seem to have been involved in either meeting, perhaps as the government’s way of soothing the feelings of the university teachers. Among other agreement reached, Prof. Aluko further stated that a signed document will soon be issued to itemize the full issues on which the consensus he had outlined here, as brokered by AVCNU, was reached. With this level of agreement, it is expected that the Nigeria will soon sigh and sigh of relief as ASUU is expected to call-off its strike any moment from now. |

My point is that d guy made wrong combination, am not saying he won't get admission but he should be prayerful. There re still 2nd list on d way even d supplimentary list so calm down. Then OAU offered me another course but I turned it down, so for him hope is not lost |
BOOMBOOM It has happened to me before, I was seeking admission in OAU then. I choose OAU as my 1st and 2nd choice, course of study was International relation and Public Administration. My JAMB combination was English,Econs,Govt and CRS instead of (ENGLISH,ECONS,GOVT,&MATHS) I opted for CRS cos I am very gud in it. I had in my rst Eng=54,Econs=58,Govt=70,CRS=80 aggregate was 262. I went for the post UTME. Eng=80,Econs=44,GOVT=68 and CRS=78 and aggregate was 270. International Relation cut-off was 269 and Pub. Adm was 200. I was dead sure of admission! Ppl were given admission,I was still hoping and praying but the admission never come. We went to the sch to find out what the problem was. We went straight to d registrar's office, he too was surprised that with my score I should have been given adm. But while he was perusing my documents, that was when he spotted my UTME combination. That was how I lost admission that year. It is very important to opt for right combination |

BOOMBOOM Vice President Namadi Sambo led the Federal Government team in a renewed negotiation with ASUU to resolve the lingering strike that has crippled the universities. The meeting held at Aguda house, Presidential Villa on Friday. In attendance on the part of the Federal Government were the Supervising Minister of Education, Barr. Nyesom Wike, Executive Secretary of National Universities Commission, NUC, Prof. Julius Okojie and technical staff of the Federal Ministry of Education. Scan-News gathered that ASUU President, Dr Nasir Isa Fagge and his executives were accompanied to the meeting by Committee of Vice Chancellors leadership. It was learnt that an earlier meeting between Barr. Wike and ASUU leadership teased out areas of possible concession of both sides. Scan News gathered the Federal Government may concede to ASUU the right to participate as a major stakeholder in the execution of NEEDS Implementation Projects in the universities. ASUU had complained that the Suswam Committee excluded them from the implementation of projects in the universities. On the part of ASUU, the meeting agreed that they should suspend their strike, while the process of implementation continues. A Vice Chancellor of a northern university attending the meeting said that key issues will be ratified and the strike may be resolved in less than two weeks. According to him, the vigour and forthrightness introduced by the Supervising Minister of Education, Barr. Wike who opened diplomatic channels with ASUU leadership. “Our belief is that with the ground work already done, this strike should not last more than two weeks”, he said. If they strike a compromise, the Federal Government will release ASUU’s September Salary today and the lecturers will get their alert next week, it was gathered. The leaders after the two hours meeting that ended about 2pm on Friday did not issue a statement. News gathered that they will reconvene on Monday before Sallah. |

BOOMBOOM •Allege union inserted N87bn into 2009 agreement in February 2013 The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) and the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) have declared their opposition to the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), describing the action as self-serving and hypocritical. Both bodies alleged that the N87 billion being demanded as earned allowances was not a part of the 2009 agreement, but was calculated and handed to the government to insert into the agreement in February 2013. The National President of NANS, Mr. Yinka Gbadebo, speaking at a press briefing in Abuja yesterday, also warned ASUU against taking alleged steps to divide the students' body. This, he said, in response to some protests by some students in support of the ongoing action which was now in its 102th day. The Chairman of the Needs Assessment Report Implementation Committee and Benue State Governor, Gabriel Suswan, had already met with NANS and NYCN where he updated them on the efforts of the government at improving the infrastructure of the universities. The two bodies accused ASUU of deliberately frustrating efforts by the students and youth body to meet its leaders and discuss the union's grouses, saying that this suggested that the union has something to hide. Gbadebo, who spoke on behalf of two bodies, added that the causes being pursued by the union are not in the interest of Nigerians, as the union is propagating. He disclosed that NANS and NYCN had already obtained copies of the 2009 Agreement and were convinced that ASUU was being egocentric in its demands for its own gains and not in the interest of the Nigerian university system. "The N87billion being demanded by ASUU was not calculated and stated clearly as at the time the 2009 agreement was reached. The N87billion was generally calculated and presented to government to be inserted into the agreement by ASUU in February this year," he alleged. Gbadebo decried the concerns of ASUU as regards the Needs Assessment into Primary and Secondary demands. While NANS and NYCN backed ASUU's secondary demands, they doubted the sincerity of its primary demands. "The primary demands are the earned allowance totalling N87billion being demanded by ASUU for its members. ASUU is also demanding that all landed properties in public universities nationwide should be allocated to it by the government to be managed via a company called ASUU Holdings," he said. Gbadebo further said: "The secondary demands are those which encapsulate conducive environment for teaching and learning, total implementation of UNESCO recommendation on education, among others. A total of N400billion is being demanded by ASUU for these for 2013." The primary reasons, Gbadebo said have become the main reasons why ASUU had refused to call off the strike. "The N87billion being demanded by ASUU was not calculated and stated clearly as at the time the 2009 agreement was reached. The N87billion was generally calculated and presented to government to be inserted into the agreement by ASUU in February this year," he alleged. NANS and NYCN, however, appealed to ASUU to avoid politicising the strike, and call off the action in the interest of Nigerian students. They called for a National Education Stakeholders' Dialogue to come up with practical solutions to reverse the declining trend in the nation's education system. "We want to equally sound a clear note of warning to some ASUU members who are relentlessly trying to polarise our dear organisation, NANS through sponsorship of fallacious, slanderous and libelous publications by fictitious and to a great extent unauthorised persons in the name of NANS to desist from this act of shame, as any further sponsorship of such will be met with the full venom of the wrath of Nigerian students and youths," Gbadebo said. |
