Listing and ranking richness of countries is always a challenge. Between social-economic status, commerce, economics shifts, natural disasters, many years of colonialism, poverty and inequality, and government corruption – there are most definitely many challenges in economic growth and maintaining a healthy, wealthy and productive society. There are 1.3 billion people living across Africa, in 54 different countries, that produces $2.2 trillion in nominal GDP thanks to trade, agriculture and harvesting various sources of energy (oil being the dominant one in certain countries). Not too long ago, in 2013, Africa was the world’s fastest-growing continent at 5.6% a year. Nowadays, the African Development Bank predicts an increase of 4.3% in yearly growth across the continent. World Bank expects most of the African countries to reach a GDP per capita of at least $1,000 (ranking those as “middle income”) by 2025. All nominal data in this article are based on World Bank latest reports. How would Nigeria’s oil export affect its ranking? Does the government domination on the economy of Kenya helps its rank? How would countries like Ghana and Zimbabwe rank in comparison to Zambia and Uganda? How does South Africa’s complex social history affect its economic growth? Which other countries occupy the top and bottom of this list? https://www.leadingreporters.com/business/top-25-richest-and-poorest-countries-of-africa/ |

How AEDC Defrauds Electricity Consumers With Outrageous, Irregular And Illegal Charges Residents of Abuja, Nasarawa, Kogi and Niger States are currently groaning under illegal and unsubstantiated electricity charges foisted on them by Abuja Electricity Distribution Company, AEDC. An investigation carried out by LeadingReporters has unveiled the fact that what AEDC charges consumers is far what is approved by NERC. President Muhammadu Buhari APC-led government is not a government for all Nigerians. Do never be swayed by his claim he belonged to nobody. He belongs to APC. He sees his party, instead of Nigeria as his first constituency. President Muhammdu Buhari APC-led government lacks knowledge of cohesion, sound management of a complex economy like Nigeria’s. Today, under President Buhari, government patronage is limited to people and companies associated with APC and the only Nigerians regarded as true Nigerians are those who support APC or sing the praises of President Buhari. https://www.leadingreporters.com/investigation/revealed-how-fg-frustrates-companies-believed-to-have-links-with-pdp/ |

Negligence of Duty: AEPB Neglects Escalation of Air Pollution at Wuse, Abuja Most Popular Market For what many will call an eye-sour, the environment of the most popular market in Abuja, Wuse Market, has now become a hub filled with dirt and foul smell renting the air. Nigeria political elites lack morality in leadership. They see the public fund as a veritable source of livelihood. This is because the greater number of those who hold elective positions lack the creative wit to survive outside the public purse. The Nigeria Senate has become the retirement place for many State Governors. This seems so going by the number of one-time governors who have flooded the Senate. Many more are still coming, raising the question of credibility and morality amount these folks. Interestingly, it is funny to see a Governor whose only achievement is bleeding the treasury of his state making his way to the Senate. To perform what magic? You may ask. They are not there for what they can give, but for what they can continue to take away from the system. Nigeria system has been dotted with the same recycled failures. Since independence, these unpatriotic elements and opportunists have dominated the political landscape. Do you wonder why the fortune of the nation keeps plunging? The answer is not far-fetched. These men have simply tested failures who can never be trusted with leadership in saner climes. https://www.leadingreporters.com/news/lead-news/list-of-current-governors-who-may-retire-into-the-senate-come-2019/ |
The Chief of Staff to President Muhammadu Buhari has jetted out of Nigeria to the United Kingdom on medical grounds. Information obtained by LeadingReporter revealed that Aba Kyari who recently celebrated his 80th birthday will upon return have a good time with friends and family. It would be recalled that Abba Kyari’s previous overseas treatment bill was allegedly paid from the purse of Nigeria High Commission in the United Kingdom. 1. The President’s Perceived Nepotistic Tendencies: Holding a position as high as Nigeria presidency entails striking a balance to ensure greater inclusiveness and social cohesion. This is because Nigeria is a multi-religious and multi-ethnic nation. Since the advent of this democracy, all former Presidents have tried to ensure that all ethnic groups are accommodated with one strategic position or the other. From former President Olusegun Obasanjo to former President Goodluck Jonathan, most of the strategic appointments followed merits and Federal Character principle. But that does not seem the case under President Muhammadu Buhari. Buhari’s critics call him a despotic ruler who do not understand the virtue of tolerance for other ethnic groups or religious beliefs. https://www.leadingreporters.com/news/4-major-factors-that-will-adversely-affect-president-buharis-reelection-bid/ |

Contrary to the expectation of Nigerians that they would have a more stable light at an affordable rate, investigation unveiled by LeadingReporters indicates that this may be a day-dreaming. Land and landed properties are one of the most valuable assets to possess. They are among the few assets with the probability to increase significantly in value with little time. The fact that Land appreciates faster in the cities is the main reason we have a steady increase in the number of landowners registering their land in Abuja. Abuja being the capital of Nigeria is a very strategic place to acquire landed property. The opportunities associated with it can’t be overestimated as properties appreciate quickly in this part of Nigeria. This fact alone is evident in the number of new buildings springing up in areas that were hitherto labeled as Abuja suburb. Evidently, lots of Nigerians are aware that owning a property in Abuja is one of the most certain ways to increase wealth. As a result, Abuja witnessed a surge in the purchase of lands both in the city and suburbs. https://www.leadingreporters.com/news/lead-news/5-main-reasons-land-allocations-was-suspended-in-abuja/ |

The power grid collapse comes on the same day the national team played Croatia in the first World Cup fixture NIGERIA suffered a major power cut on the first day of its World Cup campaign, according to local reports. The power grid meltdown came on the same day the national team played Croatia in its first fixture. The Super Eagles lost 2-0 on the day, but millions turned out to watch the game. An own goal from new Stoke recruit Oghenakaro Etobo, and a spot kick from Luka Modric was enough to break hearts in Africa. But many fans would have been spared the agonising loss – as the power went out across swathes of the nation. Local media reported a total collapse of “all the nation’s power plants.” The report said: “A top executive of one of the nation’s electricity distribution companies, told our correspondent on condition of anonymity that the national grid first collapsed on Friday. https://www.leadingreporters.com/news/nigeria-plunged-in-to-darkness-by-power-grid-meltdown-as-millions-watched-world-cup-build-up-on-tv/ |

Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) which instituted the court action also wants Fashola to explain if such spending came from budgetary allocations or other sources.” In the suit filed last week at the Federal High Court, Ikoyi, Lagos, SERAP is seeking “an order for leave to apply for judicial review and an order of mandamus directing or compelling Mr Fashola to provide specific details on the privatisation of the electricity sector, the names of all the companies and individuals involved; and to publish widely including on a dedicated website any such information.” https://www.leadingreporters.com/news/lead-news/fashola-sued-over-his-failure-to-account-for-the-spending-on-the-privatisation/ |

Earlier this week, I caught myself sympathising with Abubakar Bukola Saraki over his perceived persecution and trials in the hands of the executive and the Nigerian Police Force. As a matter of principle, I never sympathise with anybody in Nigeria’s top one percent — no matter the situation, and I have no plans to start now. So I snapped out, reminding myself of all the sins of Saraki. Over the past few weeks or months now, Saraki and his prime Senate supporter, Dino Melaye, have been the subject of one investigation or the other. First, Melaye was arrested at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport and was told he was on some no-fly list and was wanted by INTERPOL. He was later arrested and charged with criminal conspiracy and the unlawful possession of arms. The drama that came with that is fresh in our nation’s memory, so I need not go over that. Summary, Melaye is back in the chambers while the cold war continues. https://www.leadingreporters.com/opinion/the-cold-war-in-aso-rock-and-the-new-heroes-in-town/ |

Last weekend, Nigerian Pop Star, Wizkid ticked another box off his bucket list, by filling the O2 Arena in London, a 20,000 capacity venue in London, England for the Afrorepublik festival. He didn’t do this alone; Wizkid had the best of Nigeria’s talents for support. There was, of course, the “Amuludun of Odo-Aje” – if you don’t know you better ask somebody – Skepta, Not3s, Tekno, Mr Eazi… and Tiwa Savage. For many reasons, fans were eager to see her; but not long after, Miss Savage performed, the conversation surround Afrorepublik changed from music to what a 38-year old mother of one wore during her performance.
