The Senate on Wednesday passed a resolution reducing the registration fee of Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) to N2, 500 from N5,650 that was paid this year by students.
The resolution was taken following the adoption of the report of the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFund on the inquiry into the new admission policy of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB).
The Senators also recommended for the extension of the validity period of the UTME to three academic year.
They also resolved to amend the Act establishing JAMB to reflect the extension of the validity period which is at the moment a year.

Switzerland on Wednesday said it had not given any funding to military operations against Nigeria’s Boko Haram Islamist insurgents, after a senior African Union official said it was among donors to an international intervention force.
Boko Haram, facing the heat of a military onslaught in Nigeria, has in the past year stepped up cross-border attacks in Niger, Chad and Cameroon, while continuing shooting and suicide assaults on markets, mosques and other mostly civilian targets within Nigeria itself.
At a donor conference in Addis Ababa on Monday, AU Peace and Security Council chief Smail Chergui said Switzerland had contributed to funding for the force battling Boko Haram in the Lake Chad basin.

The Kaduna State Police Command, on Thursday confirmed the kidnap of three housewives at Dorayi village in Zaria Local Government Area of the state.
The command’s spokesman, DSP Zubairu Abubakar, said the women were kidnapped on Sunday. Abubakar said that the police were on the trail of the kidnappers and had intensified surveillance in the area. He urged the family members to cooperate with the police to ensure the safe release of the women.
The police spokesman said that kidnappers were yet to make any demand for ransom contrary to rumours that they had demanded for N10 million.
A source in the village had earlier said that the armed kidnappers numbering about 10 took away the women on Sunday at about 12.15 am. The source gave the names of the abducted women as: Maimuna Abubakar, 25, Mairo Hussaini, 20, and Hauwa Ibrahim, 20.
“The following night the same suspects went back to the village and took away two cows and a motorcycle,” he said. Another source in the family said on Thursday that the abductors had called to assure the family that the women were safe “but made no other demand”. (NAN)

At least 45 of 81 whales have died after stranding on a beach in the Indian southern state of Tamil Nadu. The short-finned pilot whales washed ashore on the beach of Tiruchendur, a small port city in Tamil Nadu's Tuticorin district on Tuesday.
Deepak Bilgi, wildlife warden of the Gulf of Munnar Marine National Park, in charge of the stranded whales, said that the remaining whales were pushed back to the sea with a few returning back. "The older ones that succumbed to injures returned but the younger ones responded well," Bilgi said. "Scientists investigating say it is disorientation. However we have sent one of the whales for autopsy".
M. Ravi Kumar, the top official of the Tuticorin district, also inspected the beach where the whales were stranded. "This is the first time since 1973, when 120 whales were stranded, that such an incident has happened here," Kumar told DPA news agency.

Iran detained 10 US sailors after two small patrol boats reportedly drifted into Iranian waters in the Gulf, US officials say.
They say the Riverine boats apparently developed mechanical problems and were taken to Iran's Farsi Island.
Tehran says the crew and the boats "will be returned promptly", Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook told the Associated Press news agency.

The abductors of the former Speaker of the Ondo State House Assembly, Victor Olabimtan, has reduced their ransom demand to N5 million after a "serious and tough" negotiation with his family members.
This according to an aide who spoke under the condition of anonymity , the abductors spoke "extensively, using different mobile lines" late on Monday night to negotiate with the family for the quick release of the former speaker.
According to the aide, the kidnappers had initially demanded the ransom of N20 million naira but later reduced the price to N5 million after the family had pleaded for leniency considering the economic hardship in the country.
"These boys [the kidnappers] gave us a tough time. It was a serious of negotiation. We had to start begging them to release Mr. Olabimtan, pricing the freedom of a fellow man like pricing food stuff.
"Right now, the family is reaching out to political associates and friends in order to raise the fund. But, I know by the grace of God, our leader would return very unhurt", he said.

A holiday jet was forced to divert to Mallorca after the pilot alerted traffic controllers to a terror threat on board.
The pilot of the Aegean Airlines flight from Athens to Madrid made the urgent request due to concerns over a passenger.
A bomb squad met the flight when it arrived at Mallorca's Son Sant Joan airport where passengers and their bags were searched for several hours.
