Hello grafikii,
The focal length of a dish is very important if you want to get optimum performance from your dish.
In fact, with a wrong focal length you will not get any signal on your lnb and you will end spending countless hours
in the sun for nothing.
That said, if your dish diameter is 320cm and depth is 40cm then your calculation is correct. Your theoretical focal point
should be 160cm. Notice the emphasis on theoretical because in reality, it may not be exactly 160cm spot on.
You will have to do a little adjustment and finetuning in order to arrive at the actual focal point on the dish but I doubt if
it will be as low as 142cm.
Thank you very much

Good morning grafiki.
When you are tracking a Ku satellite on a parabolic dish, you should make sure that the lnbf is pointing at the center of the dish. You should check the curvature of that your dish including the focal point of the dish.
How do I get the focal point please, is it same as focal length?

Ameboperoo:
If your dish is okay, the lnb should point directly to the centre
Thanks

Hello grafikii,
You might need to check that dish to ensure it is not warped.
Take a straight plank (preferably 2 by 2 wood) and stretch it across the diameter of the dish.
Make sure you are measuring from the center. To get to the center, take another short straight wood
and locate the deepest part of the dish. From that point, align both the 2 by 2 wood that you stretched
across the diameter and the shorter wood that you have placed inside the dish. Both of them must be exactly
perpendicular (90 degrees). Since your dish is 3m, you should get exactly 3m or with some fractions across
two or more opposite ends of the dish. If not then your dish is warped (or bent on one side).

You can do this while the dish is hanging on the pole but you have to ensure it is facing sideways and not up.
But if you can drop the dish to the ground, the better for you. It will make your measurements easier.
Thank you very much, I will try later today.

Also I would like to find out how important focal length is to performance of a dish. Using the formula below I got focal length of 160cm but my dish focal length actually measures at 142 cm which is about 18cm short. Is this responsible for the poor performance of the the dish?

Here is the formula I used
Focal Length = f.

Depth = c = 40cm

Diameter = D = 320cm

f = ( D * D ) / ( 16 * c)

f = (320 *320) / (16 * 40)

f = 102,400 ÷ 640

f = 160cm

I want to know if I should go ahead an construct longer lnb arms or the focal length isn't really important. Looking forward to your response.

Hello guys, when tracking ku sat on a big dish (3m and above) should the lnb point to the center of the the dish or should it tilt slightly to the sides.
Cc GeorgeD1 odilibe blexxonmak and all

I'm tracking 9e on a 3m dish, when I point the lnb directly at the center of the dish, i am not able to hit signal unless I point the lnb slightly to side, i hit green but with poor results as a 1.8m dish would.

I had a surprise today. While walking through Onitsha town today. My eyes beheld a surprise. A 4.5m offset dish in a scrap yard. The type banks uses for their server. Just behind it too is a 2m offset dish too at the same scrap yard. I was hiding my excitement so that i wont tip them off on my excitement. The 4.5m is petalized while the 2m dish is not. But there was a problem. One of the petal arm of the dish is missing. I told them though non challatly to look for the missing parts that i might do them a favour to come and pick the scraps up. To me. It is no longer a scrap material. Coming days or weeks will surely reveal more.
Did you eventually get the 4.5m offset

Hello house, i did carry out a surgery work on my dish this past weekend with one of the best and very amiable, gentle gurus around Umassor, by name. i wasn't satisfied with my signal on hotbird especially with fox sport at 56%. So on that wet saturday ..just imagine Umassor his brother and i set out to work, it was very lively, fun watching him at work. We tried about 12 different LnBs jus to see the best of them, this are high end LnBs, just to mention a few, we had inverto utra, fuji star gold, digisat, old fuji, etc. we tried them one after the other. it was so much fun seeing what signal percentage each one of the LNBs gave us. After series of tape measurement, adjusting here and there, bolts, angle inclination, and so on and despite the drizzling rain we where able to add wait...8% gain on foxsport, from 56 to 64 on a 3meter dish. even on my hispasat that i was formally getting 56-57 jump to 64% too. On hotbird initially i had about 950 channels suddenly jumped to 1,049 channels, also i was getting about 84 channels on Hispasat suddenly jumped to 139 channels, even Nilesat dat i was having 134 stations suddenly became 254, i said wao!! this cant be true, this a good testimony to the fact that you can always achieve more when u put your best into somting you love and that 3 heads is better than one. which LNB did the job? its d oneway star gold LNB.. the old type ooo. most of the new ones are fake. My humble Appreciation goes to my brother, my friend UMASSOR Wilson the only guy i know that has tracked PTVSPORT in lagos with 4meter, who despite the rain came all the way to my base , to you brother too, to my sweet wife who provided entertainment for us i say thank you and God bless.
Hi olason, i know this an old post, can you tell me your location, i want to know if 3.2m dish can achieve this in lagos
