A man who whipped an Islamic convert 40 times under Sharia Law for drinking beer has been jailed for at least 16 months.

Magistrate Brian Maloney says three co-accused men were 'duped' by leader Wasim Fayed into thinking whipping a man was 'righteous'.

The three other men were given 18-month suspended sentences.

In sentencing, the magistrate said "You acted as a vigilante. The wider community should view your actions as yours alone and not representative of the Islamic faith".

He sentenced Fayed to a maximum of two years in jail.

In July 2011, Christian Martinez, 32, had recently converted to Islam but had gone out with friends and had consumed alcoholic drinks.

He woke up in the middle of the night to find four bearded men had broken into his Silverwater home.

Three men held him down while the fourth whipped him with an electric cord.

At the time, he told 7News that the attack was fundamental Wahhabist punishment for drinking alcohol, and that the welts he sustained were severe.

"I was screaming, absolutely screaming," Martinez said.

"I can't explain the pain. Horrific. I mean I don't wish it upon anybody."

Martinez's shoulders and abdomen were covered in welts and bruises after the forty lashes that were inflicted on him.

His religious mentor, Fayed, was charged with carrying out the whipping as punishment under sharia law.

Fayed was found guilty in February of charges of assault occasioning bodily harm in company and stealing.

In July 2011, Mr Martinez had called Fayed to confess taking illicit drugs and consuming alcohol. He said he consented to the punishment but then begged him to stop.

Fayed told him he was doing it because he loved him and and so he would remember the pain next time he thought about drinking alcohol.

After the punishment, the offenders discovered a hard drive used to store CCTV footage so removed it from the premises.

It's believed to be the first case in an Australian court relating to a punishment being carried out under Islamic law.

For the records, GEJ failed to attend the NN24 debates while other candidates attended. GEJ attended the debate by the Nigeria Election Debate Group while the other candidates failed to show up. So if you claim GEJ avoided the NN24 debate, the same can also be said of other candidates (Buhari, Ribadu) who avoided the debate by Nigeria Elections Debate Group.

Some mischief makers argue that one debate is bigger or better than the other. That is a lie from the pit of HELL. There's nothing to suggest such. The NN24 debate which the other candidates attended and so much noise was made about is now EXTINCT. While the Nigeria Election Debate Group is still very active. They organised high quality debates for the gubernatorial candidates in the last Edo and Ondo elections. Liars and propagandists should take their lies elsewhere.

By the way, of the campaign messages that went round in preparatory to the 2011 elections, it is the famous "I had no shoes" campaign message of GEJ that still stand out till date. Other messages of GEJ that still stand out till date include "I have no enemy to fight", "I am one of you", "if I could make it, you can make it",etc. Can someone remind us of any famous campaign message from Buhari, Ribadu,etc. Now we know the learners

Let me try to answer your point.

question 1, can you prove that PDP is planning to rig 2015 election? Why take medicine for a disease that is unknown?
Question 2, how does conducting primary election in PDP concern Buhari? If PDP decided that he wanted to choose another means of conducting its primary, how does that affect you? Are a member of PDP? At least we can attest to some primary conducted by PDP in the past, can you just mention one primary election conducted by ACN?
Question 3, PDP can decide whoever they want as their B.O.T. chairman, just as APC can decide to instal Boko Haram progenitor, Ali Modu Sherrif as its BOT chairman. How does that affect Buhari and you?
Question 4, in ACN before you are even given a form to fill, you will sign your resignation letter. You are bounded by their leaders to even think of going to court against their party. At least there are many cases in court against PDP by its member. Why are you so particular about internal workings of PDP?
