The Supreme Court, this morning, affirmed the selection of Alhaji Mufutau Muhammed Oloyede Gbadamosi, Okikiola Esuwoye II of the Anilelerin Ruling House Offa as the 24th Olofa of Offa. Justice Walter Onnoghen delivered the unanimous judgment of the five justices, Olabode Rhodes-Vivour, Nwali Ngwuta, Mary Peter-Odili and Amiru Sanusi. In his lead judgment, Onnoghen held that the appointment by the Kwara Government was in line with the customs and tradition of the people of Offa. Onnoghen held that Anilelerin is the only authentic ruling house that could ascend the thrown of Olofa, adding that the Olugbense ruling house had no historical backing. “From the history, customs and tradition of the people of Offa, it is clear that Anilelerin ruling house, is the authentic and only ruling house backed by native law and authority that can ascend the thrown of Olofa. He also dismissed the principle of rotation of the kingship in Offa land. If there is rotation as claimed by the Olugbense family, the principle will have started before the ascension of the immediate past Olofa, Oba Mustapha Olanipekun. “This court also found, as a fact, that there is no rotational policy in existence as far as the stool of Olofa of Offa is concerned. The claim of the Olugbense family has no historical backing and therefore, the claim of the appellant, through a counter claim on the issue, succeed and is hereby affirmed.” The court also held that the ascension to the throne is by election and not by rotation as claimed by the Olugbense family. He also declared the state government Gazette of 1970, which recognised Olugbense ruling house was null and void because it was contrary to the customs and tradition of the people of Offa. The apex court also set aside the judgments secured by the plaintiffs at the state High Court and the Court of Appeal Division in Ilorin. The court, however, expressed the hope that the customs and traditions of the people being dynamic was subject to changes depending on the practices of people concern at the particular time. “It is hoped that in due course Offa people, particularly the ruling house will see need and reasons to effect necessary changes to enable Olugbense descendants ascend the stool ones again.” The court encouraged the people to talk things over and find a peaceful solution to the problem and advice the state government accordingly. Alhaji Saka Adeyemo, Abdulrauf Adegboyega Keji and Saka Keji of Olugbense family had challenged the appointment of Gbadamosi as Esuwoye II. They contended that the appointment contravened Section 3(3) of Kwara State Government Edict on appointment of and deposition Chiefs law of 1970. The claimants had said that the law made provision for rotation between their family and the Anilelerin family. In their originating summons argued on their behalf by Mr John Olusola Baiyashea (SAN), the plaintiffs claimed that it was their turn to produce the Olofa in line with the principle of rotation. Oba Gbadamosi was represented by a team of lawyers led by Mr Yusuf Olaolu Ali (SAN) Source: http://www.lagoslately.com/supreme-court-affirms-olofas-selection/

Senate President, Bukola Saraki has described the emergence of Senator Ike Ekweremadu as the deputy Senate president of the 8th Senate as painful and regrettable, saying no true party member would want to share his position with a member of other parties. Blaming the absence of some All Progressives Congress (APC) senators at the inauguration session on that fateful day for the election of Ekweremadu, he added that all through the period when he and his team were strategising for his election to the Senate president’s seat, not even for once did they anticipate that a Senator from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will emerge as his deputy. Speaking with some Senate correspondents yesterday, Saraki said it is not true that he entered into any pact with the PDP to sacrifice the deputy Senate slot for PDP’s support. “Never in our wildest imagination did we envisage that some senators would not be present on the day of the inauguration. “In my own view, and in the view of some of those who worked closely with me, I worked hard for my election, I had direct contact with every single senator, one on one. Weeks leading to the election I did not rely on anybody. I worked hard; both in our party, the APC and out of it. “I approached every senator, I talked to them…we built confidence, not only in the APC, but, also, in the PDP. I talked to them. That was why I laugh when people said I had a deal with Ekweremadu or I had a hand in the emergence of Ekweremadu. “I didn’t need any deal to win. I had penetrated…There was no deal; I didn’t need any deal in the first place. I had worked hard such that every body who was a senator, I campaigned hard and canvassed for their votes and won their confidence. “At one of the meetings held at Transcorp Hilton which Senator Godswill Akpabio co-chaired with Senator Ibrahim Gobir and a few others, which had both APC and PDP members, at that meeting, if you heard most of them there, the position they took was that ‘this is the Senate president they want.’ Across party lines, they believed in me that this is the Senate president that can lead us. There was no deal. “Sometimes, I wonder how some of our colleagues found themselves at the ICC. If it had been a case that the CNA (clerk of the National Assembly) had made an announcement that the event had been postponed or it was no longer holding, plus, the invitation, it would have been different. I’m sure some are asking now, what really happened,” Saraki said. Speaking further, he said “First of all, the PDP senators had announced to the public that they were supporting me without even meeting me because in their own meeting, the majority had decided to vote for me. In their own interest, strategically, they decided that, look, this is a fait accompli because 30 of their own senators were going to vote for this man anyway and the remaining felt it was better to join. It wasn’t until 2:00am that they called us to tell us their decision. With regards to the deputy, when they told us that they had a candidate, we, too, told them we had a candidate for deputy Senate president in the person of Senator Ali Ndume. After our own meeting, it was our thinking that it was after the election of the Senate president that the two groups in APC would meet and we would agree on a candidate. We never in our imagination thought they would not turn up. By the time we got there, we were only 24 while the PDP was more than 40. In an election, there’s no way they would not have defeated us and that was what happened. And now, when people say it was a deal, I say that if the CNA had started the procedure in the House of Representatives first, and moved to the Senate thereafter, today, we, the APC, would have had a deputy Senate president. “It is unfortunate that we have a PDP man as deputy Senate President. It is painful. It is painful for any APC member because when we went through the struggle, that was not what we signed for. But it has happened; but it is unfortunate and it is not fair to put the blame on one side because it is a combination of errors and miscalculations that led us to have, it that morning; some senators at another place instead of being here. So, to suggest that it was out of a desperate act to emerge is what I reject completely and those who followed the events would know that I didn’t have that deal to emerge, ” he said. The Senate president also disclosed that he never shunned the invitation of the party to a meeting on the inauguration day, contrary to reports. He explained that he got wind of plans to abduct him and keep him away from the National Assembly premises so that he will not be able to stand for election so he made plans to sneak into the complex early and was not with his phones till later that day. “First of all, as regards the meeting (at ICC), on the morning of the inauguration, I didn’t finish meeting until 4:00 of that day and I had got information that efforts would likely be made to make sure that I didn’t get access into the chambers. “So, as early as 4:00am and 5:00am, I had made contingency plans that I must get into the National Assembly because the plan before was that senators-elect should go to the Transcorp Hilton Hotel around 8:00 am and 9:00am to proceed to the National Assembly. “But I was advised that it would not be safe or secure for me to do that because some people made sure…if I didn’t get into the chambers, it would t be possible for me too be nominated, for the nomination to be seconded and for me to accept the nomination. “I can tell you today that I was in the National Assembly Complex as early as 6:00 in the morning and I stayed in a car in the car park, from 6:00 in the morning till quarter to 10:00am. This is the truth. I stayed there and I was there with no communication whatsoever. “So, anybody who said they spoke to me to go to ICC was not true because I didn’t even know what was going on. All I was monitoring was how people were arriving the complex. “It was at quarter to 10:00 that I got information that the clerk to the National Assembly had entered the chamber. So, I got out of the small car I was inside, stretched myself and put on my Babariga because I didn’t have it on before then. “I walked from the car park into the chambers…That was why some of you would have seen that I looked very tired on that morning,” Saraki said. http://www.lagoslately.com/i-regret-ekweremadus-emergence-saraki/

Good morning LL readers here is a mail I got from a reader who needs your honest opinion on an issue… Good day Mr Kunle, please I have an issue bothering my mind and I want you to please help me share this with LagosLately Readers. I am a proud muslim and a professional photographer who is presently observing the Ramadan fast as required of all muslims. My father who is also a muslim as been a medical doctor for over thirty six years and I know he still performs all kinds of surgeries which exposes him to the unclothedness of the opposite sex even while observing the Ramadan fast. I naturally assumed it’s not wrong since he is doing it (seeing women’s unclothedness) with a good motive. Being a professional photographer myself I have been working on a project since last week and part of the project involves taking Unclad photos of ladies and men alike. My question now is Is my Ramadan fast still acceptable? Source:http://www.lagoslately.com/am-i-still-fasting/

Boxing’s all time greatest Muhammad Ali is dead. Ali died Friday evening at a Phoenix hospital, according to a press release from family spokesperson Bob Gunnell. He was 74 years old. The release did not specify the cause of death. Ali was rushed to the hospital and hospitalized yesterday with a respiratory issue, and his family released a short statement earlier this afternoon , acknowledging the hospitalization and stating that his condition at the time was “fair.” Born Cassius Clay on Jan. 17, 1942, Ali was the first man to win the heavyweight world championship three times. He was banned for three years in the late 1960s for refusing to enter the armed forces , but he returned to the sport and won the Rumble in the Jungle and the Thrilla in Manila. Widely regarded as the greatest boxers of all time, Ali ended up as famous for his anti-war speeches and anti-establishment politics as as for his boxing achievements. www.lagoslately.com/boxing-legend-mohammed-ali-dies-at-74/

This peice was meant to be in a “Count Down Form” but what I feel for Vector wouldn’t give me that time to start writing on the others like Simi, Adol, and so on…Olanrewaju Ogunmefun a.k.a VECTOR has been widely celebrated as one of the best rappers in Africa. Vector is not a green horn in Nigerian Music Industry as he been very popular in Mainland (Lagos) since mid-2000s and became known nationwide in 2010. As good and famous as he is, Vector is by far the most underrated musician from this part of the world. Lets do a simple analyses here; Talent wise, very few African artists are better. Lyrically He is a beast and his delivery is among the very best around. When you talk about punchlines and wordplays Vector is second to non (he’s even ahead of the great MI). One of the organizers of the just concluded Unilorin Faculty of Engineering Awards Night and Gig revealed to me how much they paid the two main artists who came for the event (Reekado Banks and Vector the Viper) the “combo” is ok but i got “vexed” when he told me they were paid same amount (ofcourse after serious negotiations). I was like how on earth would Vector and Reekado Banks charge or be paid thesame amount (N400k). I am not saying Reekado Banks doesn’t deserve to be paid that amount but I expect Vector to have left that level and at thesame time “MAVINS Factor played out for Banks. Untill recently I used to see Donjazzy as one overrated individual (though I still dont think He’s good at singing though he keeps improving in this area. -I believe anybody can learn how to sing and one naturally gets better when you do thesame thing overtime) but after critical analysis of his imput in terms of restructuring and developing artists I changed my mind and doffed my hat. Frankly, without the MAVINS FACTOR (Donjazzy’s imput) no OAU student would pay a kobo more than N100 to watch any MAVIN ARTIST except Tiwa Savage #fact. Maybe N120 for Korede Bello because he is one of the raves of the moment. -Further illustration Without Donjazzy, someone like D’Prince would never have dreamt of being a musician. The whole world knows that there is no basis for comparism between Vector and D’prince but D’prince would cost Events Organizers more (thats packaging and Vector lacks this). I don’t know much about how this Record Label things work but I think Vector should really consider joining not just a good label but MAVINS, a developement I know would excite Don Jazzzy. Now we have been able to establish the fact that Vector’s major problem is “Packaging” and I think only MAVINS can upgrade him to the level he deserve to be by now. I know the N400k would shock many but most of our musicians charge around that amount. I know Eva, Sheyi Shey, Sean Tizzle, Faze, Dj Zeez, Harrysong, Emma Nyra etc does. Don’t mind the millions you see in paper and online (all na packaging). Even Wizkid’s nanagement once agreed on N800k when he was “publishing” N1.5m as his asking price. I learnt he charges between N3.5 and N4.5 now (good for him) Don Mikel SOURCE: www.lagoslately.com/most-underrated-nigerian-musicians/

Can you remember the last time you saw Bright Okpocha (Basketmouth) and Ayo Makun (AY) in eachother’s shows? well there have been rumours that there is a silent rivalry between top comedians, Basketmouth and AY. As both humour merchants are big brands in the industry, many believe that the rivalry is based on ego issues. Last Easter Sunday, Basketmouth, looking very casual, was spotted at the lobby of the hotel where AY’s annual Easter show was held. So many people had thought Basketmouth came for the show and most of his fans who also came for the AY show, stopped by him to take pictures with him. But just after he exchanged banters with his fans and took pictures with them, the comedian got into his SUV and zoomed off! He didn’t come back. And of course, it made so many people believe indeed, there is a certain ‘beef’ between the comedians. But in an exclusive chat with Saturday Beats, Basketmouth denied the rumour saying he had no problems with AY or his show. However, when he was asked why he had to leave the venue even without entering the hall, Basketmouth said that he could not be at the show because he was not billed to perform and that he had another gig on that day. “I was not booked to appear at AY’s show. My name was not publicised as part of the people to be at the show. It is not about comedians being united; AY did his show and never mentioned that Basketmouth would perform, so why would people expect me to be there? It doesn’t make sense.” When Saturday Beats asked Basketmouth why he had to be at the venue if he knew he wasn’t going to enter the hall, he said: “It was just a coincidence that I was at the venue of the show while it was ongoing. I could not even be a guest at AY’s show because I had another gig on that day I was rushing off to. The way we think in this country is very funny. You go to the market to buy a Mercedes and hope to get a Rolls Royce engine, it is not possible. They sold a product and said that some people would perform, so why should people expect that I would be there? There is no beef between AY and I. I am an easy going person and I’m very cordial with everybody,” he said. source http://www.lagoslately.com/i-cant-even-be-a-guest-at-ay-live-basketmouth/ |
I have read so many congratulatory messages to the President-elect of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, General Mohammadu Buhari but am yet to officially convey my heartfealt feciliation to the Peoples' General and the Kingdom Comrade Pastor Yemi Osinbanjo (This man is certainly one of the most intelligent and articulate Africans today. Haven't congratulated you and your party sir, I would be going straight to the highlite of this note which is showing real gratitudes to the Nigerian youths who against all odds made sure the change didn't elude us as a Nation. Nigerian Youths must be appreciated for their tenacity and perservarance (though you have shown this more yourself over the years by not given up on Nigeria). While this outgoing government have done "a lot" empowering the youths through YOUwin and other programmes it is safe to say the YOUwin money did not really circulate well. I think one of the ways to show real gratitude to the youths is by increasing theit NYSC monthly allowance to something substancial. After a year of servicing one's father land an outgoing youth corper who has completed is or her one year mandatory service should be able to boast of N380,000 which is enough to start some small scale bussiness but with what corpers earn presently earning it almost impossible for any outgoing youth copper to save up to half of that which is not up to the price of an average apple laptop. I remember vividly what you (Prof Osinbajo) said on blocking leakeages and spending our resources in the most prudent ways. If you keep to all the promises you made to Nigerians at your various town hall meeting (with the statistics with which you backed your points and claims increasing the monthly "NYSC allowee" should not be a big deal at all. N50,000 is not too much for graduates who are serving there father land. I also have some recommendation how how to cut or reduce unnecessary "monies" spent on governance. *Constituency allowance should be completely scrabed. -this money should go directly to the Local Government Areas. * I think one of the House of Assembies should go. A senator should not be earning a kobo more than N800,000 per month without any allowance. (Senators should earn the official salary of an average Professor and Senate President the salary of Vice Chancellors of federal yniversities. We do not need a bi-parliamentary setting This platform (Nairaland.com) contributed greatly to the to emergence of the#CHANGEagents #buhariosinbajo and over 80 percent of Nairalanders are youths so lets keep sharing this till SAI BABA get to see this and we'll love to hear him talk on this issues. When one considers ratio and statistics Chelsea Football Club manager Jose Mourinho is the most successful club manager in world football. He has won the league titles in each of the four countries where he has managed – his native Portugal, Italy, Spain and England. He has won the Champions League twice. You would think he talks to God every time before his wins, however, in a new interview, Jose says the reverse is the case – he talks to God every day, but never about football and never discusses the game with his wife. Speaking to the Daily Telegraph , Mourinho admitted that he has a strong faith in God and he tries his best to separate his professional and his family life. The 52-year-old football manager and father-of-two said: ‘I believe totally, clearly. Every day I pray; every day I speak with Him. I don’t go to the church every day, not even every week. I go when I feel I need to. And when I’m in Portugal, I always go.’ What does he pray for? “For my family! For my kids, for my wife, for my parents, for happiness and a good family life. But I can say the reality is I never go to the church to speak with Him about football. Never!”’ Despite his intensely arrogant persona on the sideline, Mourinho also claims that he is a good person. ‘I think so. I try to be. And I think I am. I don’t have problems with family or friends. I am a good family person; I am a good friend. I try to support people that I don’t even know. Do I make mistakes? Yes. My professional area is not only very competitive – it iscompetitive and emotional and [you must] push people for a certain kind of behaviour – absolutely, yes. But the professional life is only part of a person; a person is much more than that.’ Chelsea are currently top of the league and are playing struggling QPR this weekend. Mourinho and his wife, Matilde, were teenage sweethearts, growing up a street away from each other in coastal town of Setúbal. They have been married for 26 years, and have two teenage children, also named Matilde and Jose source:www.lagoslately.com/mourinho-god-doesnt-care-who-wins-i-dont-pray-for-chelsea/ |
